News & notes

Will Richardson had transferred from Fordham to UAlbany in the hope of playing for coach Dwayne Killings this season.

It's not going to happen.

An NCAA investigation into Richardson's eligibility kept him off the court as the season started, and, on Tuesday, Richardson was released from the program. Seems there were things that came up before he came to Albany that raised red flags.

All that does is continue a season of misery at UAlbany.

Killings' squad dropped a 96-67 decision to South Carolina Tuesday. Amir Lindsey led Albany with 18 points. America East play starts for the moribund Great Danes (4-11) Saturday at UMass-Lowell.

In other local college action, Skidmore defeated Coast Guard, 83-71.

News & notes

The players in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have gone on strike, and that takes the Adirondack Thunder off the ice for an indefinite period.

The players union voted to strike, citing the usual reasons for labor unrest. If you are familiar with work stoppages in the NFL, NHL, NBA, and Major League Baseball, you already have a working knowledge of why they took this step. The teams and their communities will lose trust in each other if the strike is prolonged over an extended period.

A cold winter in the north country just got colder.

Nearly two months after his passing, former Saratoga track coach Art Kranick, and his widow, Linda, have been banned by USA Track & Field amid allegations of emotional & physical abuse toward competitors. Like, couldn't they have handed down that decision before Kranick died in November?

I've heard of kicking a man when he's down, but this is morbidly ridiculous.

In more positive Saratoga news, the women's basketball program underwent a quiet transition during the offseason.

Robin Chudy stepped down in June after 11 seasons, and seeing her children graduate. Kevin Himmelwright was brought in to succeed Chudy, then hired one of her former star players, Catherine "Dolly" Cairns, as an assistant. With the Lady Streaks off to a dismal start, I'd suspect Cairns, a beloved fan favorite, may be a coach-in-waiting in case Himmelwright can't get things in the right direction. Just sayin'.

In Niskayuna, the women's basketball team is on its 3rd different coach in as many years, with George Monxhwedey as the new man in charge. All he has to do is see how Troy's Will Harris has progressed since he took over in 2023, and use that as a template. Unfortunately, Nisky is also off to a rough start in the Suburban Council.

Best wishes to both Monxhwedey and Himmelwright (and Cairns, too), as the calendar turns to 2026.

Friday's high school scores:

Men's basketball:

Poultney (VT) 71, Whitehall 46.

Men's hockey:

Plattsburgh & Guilderville played to a 3-3 tie.

LaSalle 4, CBA 3. Good bounce back for the Cadets after losing to Bishop Timon last week.

Northeastern Clinton vs. Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa was postponed due to weather. No make-up date has been set.

The Hudson Holiday tournament in women's basketball was postponed as well. Lansingburgh vs. Ravena has been rescheduled for this morning at 11:30 am, per Hudl, and host Hudson will play Hoosick Falls around 1 pm or so.

News & notes

UAlbany has hired Tom Perkovich as their next football coach.

Perkovich just finished his 11th season at Susquehanna, where he had some modest success. The future of Jared Ambrose, who never had the interim label taken off this season, is uncertain.

We're getting conflicting information regarding Monday's bowling match between Troy & Lansingburgh at Uncle Sam Lanes. A Google search suggests that the match was postponed again. We will reach out to USL to find out more.

Tuesday's high school scores:

Men's hockey:

Queensbury 9, Guilderville 1. The Spartans, playing their 2nd game in three nights, rebounded after the loss to Saratoga on Sunday.

Women's basketball:

Saratoga 66, Niskayuna 48.

Mayfield 40, Whitehall 35.

Taconic Hills/Hawthorne Valley 52, Germantown 35.

Johnstown 50, Gloversville 36.

Men's basketball:

Colonie 58, Watervliet-Heatly 47. Greg Davis' club picks up its first win of the season.

Catskill 83, Greenville 46.

Rensselaer-Doane Stuart 54, Chatham 40.

Ravena 89, Hoosic Valley 49. The Ravens took out their frustrations after getting blown out by Troy last weekend on Hoosic Valley in a non-league rout.

Gloversville 49, Schuylerville 42.

Queensbury 70, Broadalbin-Perth 43.

Fort Plain 63, Waterford 22.

Merry Christmas, everyone. We'll be back on Saturday.

News & notes

The Albany Times-Union unveiled its' women's volleyball all-stars today, and, well, the bias in favor of the Suburban Council couldn't be more obvious. Troy's Addison Harkin is the only player from outside the league to be named, and she made the 2nd team. We sympathize with teams like Queensbury, Mohonasen, South Glens Falls, et al, who got the el snubbino.

Shenendehowa's Hadley Ennist was named Athlete of The Year, and leads the 1st team for her coach, Lori Kessler. Joining Ennist are:

Avery Bush (Bethlehem).

Dyllan Thomas (Saratoga).

Alex Wemyss (Burnt Hills).

Jessica Macken (Shen).

Audri Chamberlain (Burnt Hills).

Harkin is joined on the 2nd team by:

Emma Codden (Guilderland).

Caroline Merolle (Shaker).

Brynn Sollien (Bethlehem).

Leah Vaughan (Burnt Hills).

Jacey Bitter (Shen).

It is a slap in the face of the women in Section 2 that the Suburban Council, which everyone knows has favored nation status in the press, had a monopoly on the all star teams.

Monday's high school scores:

Women's basketball:

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 27, Argyle 14.

Saratoga Catholic 62, Hartford 52.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo 52, Northville 27.

Stillwater 65, Guilderland 43.

LaSalle 63, Coxsackie-Athens 58.

Glens Falls 69, Scotia-Glenville 54.

Amsterdam 60, Hudson Falls 43.

Schuylerville 64, Gloversville 21.

Men's basketball:

Fort Plain 78, OESJ 42.

Northville 78, Hadley-Luzerne 41.

Cooperstown 82, Saratoga Catholic 58.

CBA 62, Holy Trinity (LI) 56.

Indiana shut down Justice Shoats (0 points in 19 minutes), and while outscored, 40-35 in the 2nd half, held on to beat Siena, 81-60, Monday in a game aired on the Big 10 network. Francis Folefac led Siena with 19 points, as the Saints dropped their 2nd straight. Gerry McNamara's club is now idle until January 2 when they visit Iona.

News & notes

While Section 2 is settling their issues with hockey refs, Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello is raising a stink with the folks heading up the board of directors for Knickerbacker ice arena in North Troy. According to Adam Toftegaard, per the Albany Times-Union, city corporation council Richard Morrissey claimed the proposed terms of an amended agreement were "unworkable".

Seems to me that the mayor is taking her cues from the national Republican party, headed by a bloviating, immature senior citizen in Washington.

Stay tuned.

Time to catch up on weekend action.

Troy High sports review, through December 19

Troy High is on holiday break until January 5, although sports resumes December 29. Time to take a look at this week's action.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 4-0 (2-0 Colonial Council).

After beating Marcellus last Saturday at HVCC, Jamil Hood's squad had a few days to practice, and otherwise rest, before blowing away Ravena on Friday at Zotto Gym. If the Ravens came in with revenge on their minds, they were sadly disappointed.

Next: The Horses are off until January 2, when Watervliet-Heatly makes its first visit.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 5-1 (4-0 Colonial Council).

After upsetting defending champion Catholic Central on Tuesday (Hudl has it backwards), Will Harris' group crushed Ravena. The 30 point margin of victory matched their demolition of Guilderland 2 weeks earlier.

Next: The Glens Falls holiday tournament, December 29-30. Can Troy repeat last year's shockers?

Men's swimming & diving (merged with CBA & Columbia):

Current record: 4-1.

The 1 blemish came in a 4 team meet Friday, as the Flying Devil Brothers fell to Schenectady-Colonie in a meet that also included LaSalle & Hoosic Valley. LaSalle, for what it's worth, finished last. The loss was the 1st for the men's team since 2023.

Next: The pool is closed until January 6, when Bethlehem visits.

Bowling:

Current record: 4-2.

Don Poutre's club has hit the skids going into the holiday break, first losing at home to Mohonasen, then on the road at Cohoes, as the Tigers gained a split of the season series.

Next: The lone event on the schedule is a make-up date with Lansingburgh on Monday. Then, the keglers will be on vacation.

The sports review returns in two weeks.

High School Fridays: A stampede in the winds of winter (Albany at Shaker, 12/19/25)

The women are in the spotlight tonight, as Shaker hosts Albany in a Suburban Council meeting of teams who've been past division champions.

Decky Lawson's Falcons are younger, less experienced than in past years, as Lawson is looking to find a successor to Azera Gates (now at Siena). Not only that, but Albany has spent the last few years chasing Averill Park for the Grey division title. Shaker is always in the thick of it in the Blue division, and opens the season undefeated.

The difference in this game was Shaker outscoring Albany, 18-4, in the 3rd quarter. Albany never recovered. The WNYA game of the week returns in 3 weeks with a Wasaren League match, with Tamarac visiting Saratoga Catholic.

Also:

11 months after demolishing Ravena, Troy continued their hot start in both men's & women's action. The guys remain undefeated under Jamil Hood, blowing out the Ravens, 79-49. The women, now 5-1, similarly crushed the Lady Ravens, 64-34. The women are idle until the Glens Falls Holiday tournament on December 29. The boys are off for 2 weeks before Watervliet-Heatly comes in.

In hockey, LaSalle has now won 4 in a row after beating Mohawk Valley, 3-1. Mohawk Valley comes from Section 3.

News & notes

Saratoga Race Course, as we already know, will host the Belmont Stakes for the 3rd straight year come June. Overall the 2026 meet, split into two parts, will run a total of 51 days, with the majority of the meet, as per tradition, from July-September. They're expecting Belmont to reopen in the fall of 2026.

If you were like me, thinking the UAlbany-Vanderbilt women's basketball game would appear on the SEC Network proper on Thursday, you were disappointed. ESPN, which operates the channel, chose to put the game online. Just as well, as the Lady Commodores snapped the Lady Danes' 7 game winning streak, 64-35. Call it a reality check for Albany (9-3).

The dispute between Section 2 and officials that work their hockey games, per WTEN, is nearing an end. Parents across the region are breathing a sigh of relief. The agreement, to be ratified and signed on Monday, would be a great Christmas present for Section 2.

On the ice, Queensbury crushed the CD Jets, 9-1. The Jets have yet to win a game this season (0-6, 0-3 CDHSHL), while the Spartans sit atop the standings, tied points-wise with Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa, though Queensbury has played one fewer game. Meanwhile, CBA has cancelled tomorrow's scheduled non-league game vs. Waterton-Immaculate Heart, due likely to weather concerns.

In Puerto Rico, Susquehanna defeated Union in women's basketball, 63-44.

The rest of Thursday's high school action:

Men's swimming & diving:

Bethlehem 102, Albany 49.

Guilderville 92, Shaker 76.

Queensbury 88, Glens Falls 82.

Gloversville/Mayfield/Fonda 79, Hudson Falls-South Glens Falls 42.

Women's basketball:

LaSalle 71, Voorheesville 55.

Amsterdam 55, Queensbury 31.

South Glens Falls 49, Schuylerville 21.

Stillwater 67, Hoosic Valley 20.

Tamarac 64, Hoosick Falls 28.

Men's basketball:

Fort Ann 60, Crown Point 28.

LaSalle 65, Voorheesville 59.

Niskayuna 66, Guilderland 32.

A quick reminder that tonight's WNYA game of the week sees Albany vs. Shaker in women's action (7 pm).

News & notes

Now, it's the women's turn to be on TV.

Tonight, UAlbany's women will face Vanderbilt in a non-league game airing on the SEC Network (Spectrum channel 384) at 7:30 pm. The Lady Danes, remember, don't have any sort of broadcast contract, unlike the men, so this is a rare treat. The Albany Times-Union incorrectly listed the game as being at 6:30 pm.

Speaking of the Albany men, they took down Stony Brook, 71-55, on Wednesday night. Amir Lindsey had 24 points to help the Danes snap a stretch where they'd lost 3 straight and 6 of 7. The Danes return home Sunday afternoon to face Cornell (WTMM, 3 pm).

Siena, on the other hand, found out how tough Vermont is.

The Catamounts, who've been Albany's nemesis for years, defeated the Saints, 83-69, on Wednesday night. Gavin Doty led 4 Saints in double figures with 18 points, as Siena saw its 7 game winning streak come to an end. Riley Mulvey (Albany Academy) had 4 points in 12 minutes. Up next for Siena is a trip to Big 10 country to play Indiana (WJMZ, Big 10 Network, 6 pm) on Monday. The Big 10 Network is a premium channel on Spectrum.

Weeks after learning that their new regional rival, the NY Phoenix, moved to the revived United States Basketball League, the Albany Patroons announced they'll sit out the 2026 season, with plans to return in 2027. The team will retain a presence in the Albany community during the hiatus. Something tells me that there's more to this than team management, led by president Michael Corts, is letting on......!

The only other college basketball game of local interest on Wednesday saw Union defeat Johnson & Wales, 65-60, in women's action. The Garnet Chargers are in Puerto Rico, where they'll next play Susquehanna later this afternoon.

Wednesday's high school action:

Men's hockey:

Hawks 9, Guilderville 2.

Shenendehowa 3, Queensbury 1.

Adirondack 2, Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 0.

The Section 2 hockey website has confirmed that the Hawks tournament, taking place Friday & Saturday, will be at the M & T Bank Center, not at Union College.

Men's swimming:

Troy High sports review, through December 13

The schedule gets lighter as we approach the holiday break. After yesterday, there's time to regroup.

Bowling:

Current record: 4-0.

I can't recall if Troy has gotten out to this fast a start before. No, seriously. A mid-week road trip to Voorheesville was postponed (no make-up date set), sandwiched around home wins over Schalmont & LaSalle. And if coach Don Poutre says they're 4-0, take it as gospel.

Next: The current homestand ends Monday vs. Mohonasen. Troy will be the road team vs. Lansingburgh on Tuesday, and, after that, a return match with Joshua Yando & Cohoes at Cohoes Arena on Thursday before a 2 week break for the holidays.

Men's swimming & diving (united with CBA & Columbia):

Current record: 1-0.

The season finally began Tuesday with a win over Shaker.

Next: The Flying Devil Brothers hit the road for meets at Albany on Tuesday, and at Schenectady-Colonie on Friday, the latter a make-up date from December 2.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 3-1 (2-0 Colonial Council):

Reality set in for Will Harris' club on Saturday in a loss to Columbia, 65-39. The Lady Horses hung with the Lady Devils until late in the 2nd quarter, when Columbia went to a full court press, which has been Troy's Achilles' heel.

Next: Catholic Central, coming off a loss themselves on Friday, makes its first visit to Zotto Gym in at least 11 years on Tuesday. Then, it's a road trip to Ravena on Friday.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 3-0 (1-0 Colonial Council):

The weird scheduling to start the season just got weirder for Jamil Hood and the Flying Horses. We'll get to that in a bit.

Troy defeated Colonie, then blew Schalmont out of Zotto Gym, before going to HVCC and the Coaches vs. Cancer event, then beating Marcellus, 49-46.

Edit, 12/16: We had the incorrect information in the original report, and have corrected it.

Now, here's where it gets weird:

Next: The Horses are idle until Friday, when Ravena comes looking for payback after getting blown out of their own gym last season. After that, due to a non-league game having been cancelled for December 30 (they couldn't find an opponent), Troy will have 2 weeks off from game action before hosting resurgent Watervliet-Heatly on January 2. This is also the by-product of Catholic Central not fielding a men's team this year, else Troy would be playing at the Riverside Center on Tuesday.

Saturday, December 13, 2025

The rest of Friday's high school scoreboard, 12/12

 Hockey:

LaSalle 8, Clinton 6. Danny Wiese had a night. A hat trick and 3 assists, as the Cadets picked up their first win of the season.

High School Fridays: Good to the last drop (Shen @ Shaker, 12/12/25)

Given how cold it is outside this evening, you can bet the concession stand at Shaker was filled with customers asking for hot chocolate or coffee. Some will say the action on the court was even hotter, as Suburban Council rivals Shenendehowa & Shaker met to kick off season 2 of WNYA's Game of The Week.......

As Rodger Wyland stressed, once Melvin Brown comes off the injured list, Shaker, the defending Class AAA state champs, will be that much tougher.

The cameras will be right back at Shaker next week, as the women take center stage to challenge Grey division contender Albany.

Thursday's high school scoreboard, 12/11

Throughout football season the last couple of years, Chris Watson has made mention on the air that Section II needs game officials. Rodger Wyland will almost certainly make the same pitch during tonight's basketball broadcast between Shenendehowa & Shaker (WNYA, 7 pm), as they definitely need some younger officials on the court this winter.

This would explain why Schalmont & Troy moved their basketball games from tonight to last night, absent another scheduling conflict, say, at Schalmont, since Troy had no conflicts, because had they not done so, they would've been stuck for officials tonight, or so it'd seem.

Be that as it may, Troy's women ran their record to 3-0 (2-0 Colonial Council) with a 60-53 win over the Lady Sabres. Over in Troy, the men plastered Schalmont, 69-49, powered by Kayne Behan with 21 points, and Jordan Hood, the coach's son, with 20. Jamil Hood's club is now 2-0 (1-0 Colonial Council) heading into tomorrow's matinee vs. Marcellus at HVCC. Will Harris' Lady Horses will pay a call on Sarah Rainville and Columbia tomorrow afternoon as well.

Apparently, Troy's road trip to Voorheesville for bowling was a non-starter earlier this week due to unforeseen circumstances. The match was originally slated for Tuesday, then switched to Wednesday, then postponed. No make-up date has been set.

The two days off gave Don Poutre's squad the incentive to return home to Uncle Sam Lanes to blow out LaSalle, 29-3. Troy goes to 4-0 with the win.

The rest of Thursday's scoreboard:

Women's basketball:

Queensbury 55, Gloversville 30.

Galway 51, Cobleskill-Richmondville 37.

Glens Falls 58, Schuylerville 25.

Amsterdam 59, Broadalbin-Perth 52.

Saratoga Catholic 50, Hoosic Valley 39.

Tamarac 60, Emma Willard 20. The Jesters are 0-3, and the talent disparity between this year's team and the one that went to the sectionals in 2019-20 couldn't be more distinct.

Men's basketball:

Watervliet-Heatly 65, Catskill 53.

Whitehall 50, Lake George 41.

Argyle 55, Salem 52.

Thursday, December 11, 2025

Wednesday's college & high school scoreboard, 12/10

Colleges:

Not even the bright lights of being on cable television can reverse UAlbany's fortunes in men's basketball.

The Great Danes are now 0-2 vs. the Ivy League after Columbia took down Albany, 93-82, on Wednesday night, in a game broadcast on ESPNU as part of the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts. Albany (3-8) fell behind late in the first half, and never recovered.

High schools:

Hockey:

CBA 4, Hawks 3. The game was played at the RPI-Houston Field House.

Women's basketball:

Watervliet-Heatly 55, Hudson 21.

Maple Hill 44, Schenectady 13. How bad are the Lady Patriots if they're losing to a Patroon Conference team? Mind-boggling.

Coxsackie-Athens 72, Guilderland 69. At least the Lady Dutch put up a challenge after getting blown off the court by Troy last week.

Men's basketball:

Bethlehem 88, Greenville 41.

Germantown 56, Hawthorne Valley 31.

News & notes

To borrow from Agatha Christie, and, then, there were none.

Saratoga's bid to bring home a state football championship fell short on Saturday, as CBA-Syracuse 3-peated as Class AA champions in a 41-12 rout.

Of course, there's always next year.

Let's take a look at Sunday's high school action (yes, there was some):

Men's basketball:

Loudonville Christian 43, South Kortright 40.

Johnstown 42, Cairo-Durham 39.

Mayfield 58, Hadley-Luzerne 22.

Duanesburg 53, Maple Hill 51.

Tamarac 64, Gloversville 52.

Mohonasen 49, Fonda-Fultonville 42.

Men's hockey:

Hawks 2, Plattsburgh 1

Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 4, CD Jets 0.

Looking ahead to tonight, Warrensburg has cancelled its road game at King's School, with no reason given. They'll play Crown Point instead at home. Also, two women's games have been cancelled. Canajoharie-Fort Plain will not play Edmeston tonight, and Middleburgh, already off to an 0-2 start, has cancelled their game with Stamford-Jefferson.

Make it 7 in a row for Siena's men's basketball.

Antonio Chandler led 4 Saints in double figures with 16 points. Siena (9-2) is now idle until December 17 when they play Vermont.

Not a good night for UAlbany Saturday, as they were blown out by Columbia, 93-65. Ouch! Up next for Albany (3-7) is a game vs. Yale at the Hall of Fame Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts on Wednesday (4:30 pm, ESPNU, WTMM).

News & notes

After spending the summer with the Brockton Rox of the Frontier League, Derek Bender (Albany Academy/Coastal Carolina) is now free to sign with a major league team.

Bender, a catcher, was banished by MLB while in the Minnesota chain for blatantly tipping pitches. What are the chances he catches on (pun intended) with the Yankees, Boston, Toronto, or the Mets?

Stay tuned.
=====================================================
WNYA has confirmed that their high school basketball game of the week returns on December 12. Shaker & Shenendehowa will meet in the season opener, with a tip-off just after 7 pm. Rodger Wyland will be at the mic to call the game.

Troy High sports review, through December 5

"If we make it through December, we'll be fine."-Merle Haggard.

If this week is any indication, Troy High shouldn't have too much trouble.

Men's swimming & diving (united team with CBA & Columbia):

The season opening meet at Schenectady was cancelled, and, as of now, it won't be made up, as it hasn't been rescheduled as of press time.

Next: The season now starts Tuesday at home vs. Shaker.

Bowling:

Current record: 2-0.

Don Poutre's club opened by collecting a receipt from Cohoes, 21-11, in the home opener on Monday. Then, the Flying Horses crushed Ravena, 28-4, on Thursday.

Next: Troy returns home to face Schalmont on Monday, and LaSalle on Thursday.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 1-0.

Coach Will Harris couldn't have asked for a better start, and, it seems, a better opponent, as Troy routed Guilderland on the road. Needless to say, it was a happy bus ride home on a frigid Friday.

Next: Holy Names provides the opposition in the home opener on Tuesday, and then, it's back on the road vs. Schalmont on Thursday, and Columbia next Saturday.

Men's basketball:

The season starts Tuesday at Colonie, before Jamil Hood's club has their home opener vs. Schalmont on Thursday. After that, Troy will be at Hudson Valley Community College next Saturday for a lunch hour matinee vs. Marcellus.

High School Fridays: Dutch Frost (Troy @ Guilderland, 12/5/25)

Winter is still officially 2 weeks away, although for weather forecasters, it's already here, as of Monday.

With the temperature well below freezing for their season opener, Troy High & Guilderland opened their seasons tonight with different levels of expectations. Troy, in its 2nd season in the Colonial Council, conceivably could be a player if they can get past the league's elite (i.e. Catholic Central, Holy Names).

The tone was set earlier, as Troy's JV's crushed Guilderland's JV's, 54-24. Would the varsity game be more of the same?

Troy trailed briefly in the first quarter, but once they took the lead for good, it was over. The Troy varsity completed the sweep, romping to a 68-38 victory to open the season.

Next up for the Lady Horses will be the home opener Tuesday vs. Holy Names.

News & notes

Siena men's lacrosse coach Liam Gleason is currently in the hospital after a spill at his home on Sunday.

A GoFundMe page was created on Monday by a Clifton Park resident, and as of Tuesday night, more than $350,000 had been raised to pay for Gleason's hospital bills.

Donations included ordinary folks, as well as colleagues from Siena and UAlbany, where Gleason was a player for current Danes coach Scott Marr.

Update, 10:06 pm: Gleason has passed away as a result of his injuries. A memorial service will be held at the UHY Center Saturday morning.

The Capital Region golf community is mourning the passing of 7-time Northeastern Women's Golf champion Nancy Kroll, who passed away a week ago at 62. The Cooperstown native had been teaching in the East Greenbush district. A celebration of Kroll's life will take place in the spring.

The football all-stars have been announced by Section II. We're focusing on Class A:

Troy sophomore Kyair Carr was named Offensive Player of The Year. The Flying Horses also placed WR Kayne Behan, TE Aiden McBride, RB Vulonn Forde, and OL's Deon Holloway & Dayvon Holland-Sostre on the first team. Ben Mergill & LaSalle's Mark A. Galuski were named as All-Purpose players. Julian Monk, Darell Murray, & Kieonte Green were named All-Purpose players on the 2nd team. News & notes

Siena University has postponed tonight's women's basketball game vs. New Haven due to weather. The game will now be played tomorrow at UHY Center on the Siena campus (WVCR, 6 pm).

UAlbany's women went to overtime to put away Bucknell on Monday, 65-62.

Amaya Stewart led Albany with 20 points. Shen alumnus Bella Stuart contributed 4 points in 12 minutes of game time. The road trip continues tomorrow morning at Sacred Heart (11 am, ESPN+).

In other college action on Monday.....

Women's basketball:

Russell Sage 71, Cobleskill 68.

RPI 53, Utica 42. Good bounce back for the Lady Engineers after being used as tomato cans vs. UAlbany last week.

Siena's Francis Folefac was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week last week, while teammate Justice Shoats was named MAAC Player of the Week. Congratulations to both.

With apologies to wrestler-actor Cody Rhodes, bowling in the 518 has more than one royal family.

There's the Scaccias, and, then, there's the Yandos.

Joshua Yando is a 4th generation bowler, making his debut with Cohoes on Monday at Uncle Sam Lanes in the Colonial Council opener vs. Troy. While Yando had the high single for the day at 258, finishing with a 638 triple, the Tigers fell to the Flying Horses, 21-11. Jamari Flowers had the high series for the day with a 682, as Troy avenged being swept by the Tigers last season. Troy (1-0) will visit Cohoes next month.

We have to stress this again. With the forecast calling for the snow to intensify as the day progresses, check with your schools to see if any after school activities are still on. Ichabod Crane has postponed both of its varsity events for today, for example.

The bowling home opener vs. Taconic Hills has yet to be rescheduled. Likewise, a non-league men's basketball opener vs. Columbia has yet to be made up. We'll remind that Ichabod Crane is merged with Chatham in the Patroon Conference, which is why you won't see them in the Colonial Council's standings once that is posted later this month.

News & notes

UAlbany salvaged the final game of their weekend trip to Canada by routing SUNY Oneonta, 90-62, on Sunday afternoon at Place Bell.

Okechukwu Okeke led 4 Great Danes in double figures with 17 points. UAlbany is idle until Saturday, when they play Columbia (WTMM, 5:30 pm.).

Siena completed a 3 game sweep in Washington on Sunday, as the men ran their winning streak to 5 in a row with a 64-60 victory over Maine. Gavin Doty led the way with 17 points, while Brendan Coyle finished with 6 points, and Marcus Jackson had 2. The Saints return to MVP Arena Friday vs. Niagara (WJMZ, 7 pm).

In their first game back from Thanksgiving break, RPI's men fell to Middlebury, 81-75. Kellen Driscoll (Glens Falls) came off the bench to score 9 points in 28 minutes. The Engineers return home Friday to play Clarkson.

RPI's ECAC men's hockey team swept a weekend series from Niagara, 4-1 on Friday, & 3-2 on Saturday. RPI returns to Houston Field House Friday at 7 vs. Quinnipiac for Teddy Bear Toss night. Conversely, the RPI women were swept by Syracuse, dropping a 3-0 decision at home on Saturday.

Turning to high school action, Saratoga is Section II's last hope for a state football title, but to get there, the Blue Streaks will have to unseat defending champion CBA of Syracuse, who fittingly have the home field at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday night at 6 pm. Glens Falls & Schuylerville shockingly went down to defeat Saturday before Saratoga took down Mamaroneck.

With reports of a snowstorm bent on dropping as much as 8 or 9 inches, depending on what you read or hear, Tuesday morning, check with your schools to see if after-school activities previously scheduled are still on.
