Sunday's college & high school scoreboard, 1/30

 Yes, there was some high school basketball on Sunday, but the scores were not reported to certain media outlets, such as the Albany Times-Union. You can, though, access the scores at Section2basketball.com.

Non-league:

Voorheesville 73, Waterford 35.
Niskayuna 76, Amsterdam 43. The Silver Warriors remain undefeated in Section 2.
==============================================
While Siena got all the attention on Sunday, the College of St. Rose had men's & women's games as well.

Shane O'Dell (Schalmont) had 22 points, and Adam Anderson (Saratoga) added 16, as the Golden Knights won their 3rd in a row, beating Stonehill, 75-71. Earlier, the Stonehill women defeated St. Rose, 72-63. Nina Fedullo (Amsterdam) had 5 points for the Golden Knights

The teams will move on to Syracuse to play LeMoyne on Tuesday.
==============================================
In front of an announced crowd of 5,527, Siena defeated Quinnipiac, 85-76, at MVP Arena on Sunday. Colby Rogers led the way for Siena with 27 points. The Saints will continue their homestand Tuesday vs. Canisius.
==============================================
We've been notified that tonight's hockey game between Bethlehem and Albany Academy has been postponed. No make-up date set. Academy's men's basketball team was to play Rome Free Academy on Sunday, but it appears that game was cancelled.

News & notes

 By the time Siena is done at MVP Arena this afternoon, sometime around 4 pm, arena workers are likely going to be exhausted after 2 hockey games and a FireWolves lacrosse game yesterday, followed by Siena hosting Quinnipiac.

RPI & Union split the Mayor's Cup hockey doubleheader, with RPI's women picking up the win to complete a season sweep, 2-0. Union's men, however, avoided the same fate, and beat RPI by the same 2-0 score.

In the "nightcap", the 'Wolves ran their winning streak to 3 in a row, beating Halifax, 8-6. The game was delayed 15 minutes because workers had difficulty laying down the artificial turf for the game over the ice.
===========================================
RPI split its basketball games with Ithaca as well. The men defeated the Bombers, 73-71, but Ithaca won the women's game, blowing out the Lady Engineers, 79-36. RPI was held to just 3 points in the 2nd quarter.
===========================================
Meanwhile, UAlbany had no trouble with NJIT. The women kept their record at SEFCU Arena perfect with a 57-53 win. Abby Ray (Saratoga) did not play. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) had 5 points for UAlbany. The men had an easier time, pulling away to take 64-53 decision.

Siena's women, on the other hand, dropped a close one to Canisius, 81-78.Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) had 10 points for the Lady Saints.
===========================================

By all that is Holy (Holy Names @ Troy, women's basketball, 1/29/22)

 It's clear the frigid temperatures, coupled with a lack of promotion of today's game, kept people away from Zotto Memorial Gym at Troy High. Had the snowstorm that hit the 518 been any worse than it was, chances are the game would've been cancelled.

But, play they did. Troy hosted the Academy of Holy Names, representing the Colonial Council, this afternoon before a sparse crowd, but followed a familiar script. Take an early lead, but watch the defense waste it away.

It didn't help that Troy dressed just 8 players this afternoon, and likely also last night in a blowout loss to Shenendehowa. Senior Makya Chapman was among those scratched, and you can guess what that could be about, be it injury or illness. Unlike in wins over other Suburban Council also-rans such as Schenectady and Ballston Spa, being short-handed wasn't going to carry Troy to victory.

After taking an 8-6 lead in the 1st quarter, Troy was outscored, 11-3, to trail by six at the break, 17-11. Holy Names led by as many as 13 points in the second half, and fended off a late Troy rally to win, 44-37. Solaris Nunez led Troy with 13 points, but also got in foul trouble late, and was left on the bench for the final 2 1/2 minutes.

Check the video:

Troy has now dropped three in a row, and will finish the short, two-game homestand Tuesday vs. Columbia. Holy Names has now won four straight to go to 10-3 overall on the season.

News & notes

 The other shoe dropped for Union College's men's hockey team Friday when coach Rick Bennett resigned, ending an 11 year run at the Schenectady school, which included a national title in 2014.

Seems someone sent an anonymous phone tip to Union administration with concerns about Bennett's approach to coaching. Bennett told the press he was not threatened with being fired, but tendering his resignation was the best move for all concerned.

Union is playing RPI this afternoon in the Mayor's Cup at MVP Arena.
=======================================
Troy High's sports information department is getting lazy.

Once again, there is no box score from last night's narrow loss to Shenendehowa, but there is one for the women's game at Shen, which we'll address shortly. Troy has a tough road to climb in the final two weeks of the regular season, needing to catch Albany in order to repeat at Gray division champions.
========================================
Hard to believe Siena hasn't played a home basketball game at MVP Arena in nearly 3 weeks, but the schedule is what it is. The Saints beat Niagara, 60-56, on Friday. Sunday's home game vs. Quinnipiac will air on WNYA at 2 pm.

High School Fridays: Shenendehowa @ Troy (men's basketball), 1/28/22

 Last season, Shenendehowa dominated everyone in the Suburban Council-----except Troy High. The Plainsmen defeated Troy by a cumulative total of six points in two meetings, the last of which was a league championship game, since there were no sectionals last year due to COVID.

However, Shen has not been the dominant force on the men's side this season in the Blue division. They've been shown to be vulnerable. Troy is vying with Albany for first in the Gray division, so something surely had to give at Zotto Gym.

Shen led for most of the game, up until the 3rd quarter, when Troy took its first lead. Up to that point, the Plainsmen led by as many as 7 points. Troy built up a 11 point lead in the 4th quarter, but back came the Plainsmen. With under a minute remaining, Mason Courtney tied the game at 58. With 3 seconds left, Carter Seeberger won it for Shen, as a desperation heave for 3 from midcourt by Troy fell short. The Plainsmen escape with a 60-58 victory, sending Troy to its 2nd straight loss.

Troy will hit the road to visit old friend Curtis Sankey and Columbia on Tuesday before returning home, where they'll play three of their final five games, starting with Niskayuna next Friday.

 Meanwhile, in Clifton Park, Shen's women's team blew out Troy, 63-20. We'll have the stats tomorrow.

Enjoy the video.

News & notes

 While Troy High won't catch the leaders in the Suburban Council's Gray division in bowling this season, a strong 3rd place finish isn't anything to sneeze at.

The Flying Horses closed the regular season by running their winning streak to 9 matches in a row, blowing out Columbia, 20-12. Troy had 4 bowlers, led by Olivia DeCitise (695) with 600 series.

The only downside is that Troy now has to wait 12 days before the Suburban Council championships at Boulevard Bowl take place February 9. You'll recall that the league pushed back the championships a week to give teams a chance to make up dates postponed due to COVID.
============================================
518 Alumni watch: Speaking of Troy, Jenalyse Alarcon is the leading scorer for the College of Staten Island, averaging nearly 11 points a game, while averaging 9.2 rebounds a game. Unfortunately, CSI is 3-12.

News & notes

 Condolences to the family of Shenendehowa JV men's soccer coach Cassidy Jones, who passed away Tuesday after a lengthy battle with lymphoma. We don't read or hear as much about junior varsity teams in high school as we used to, but, by accounts, Jones was one of the good guys in Section II, and he will be missed.

News & notes

 A small fire only delayed the inevitable, if you believe Siena supporters.

A 2 pm matinee vs. Fairfield at UHY Center on the Loudonville campus was pushed back 2 hours because of the fire, but the suddenly hot Lady Saints prevailed anyway, beating MAAC leader Fairfield, 69-56, for their 5th straight win. Graduate transfer Selena Philoxy (Seton Hall) led the Saints with 16 points.

Coach Jim Jabir came out for his post-game presser sopping wet from being doused with bottles of water after the game.
===========================================
It's rare that UAlbany gets to be on TV. Most Great Danes games, for men & women, and this applies to the Siena women, too, turn up on ESPN3 or ESPN+, which are online entities.

On Saturday, the Great Danes' men's game vs. Stony Brook aired on SNY, which had no effect on attendance at SEFCU Arena. However, the Seawolves continued to be a thorn in the side of the Danes, ending Albany's four game winning streak, 86-75.

Meanwhile, down on Long Island, Stony Brook defeated the Albany women, 58-47. Colleen Mullen's club has now lost 2 of their last three after a 7 game winning streak. Grace Heeps (Columbia) had 6 points in support of Kayla Cooper, who led Albany with 15. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) returned, but came off the bench and scored 2 points.
==================================================
Troy High & Kingston began playing each other during Rich Hurley's 1st go-round as men's head coach. The Tigers have owned Troy, but on the women's side, it has been the other way around. Until Saturday.

While box scores have not been submitted, Kingston swept the Flying Horses. The women's latest 2 game winning streak was snapped in a 51-29 loss to drop Ryan Meikle's club to 5-10 on the season (3-7 Suburban Council). Have to believe, since the Tigers' YouTube channel is not active presently, that the hosts used the same full court press that has bedeviled Troy this season.

In the nightcap, the men ran their winning streak over Troy, dating back to 2016, to six in a row in a dominating 75-47 victory, the worst defeat of the season for coach John Killian. Troy falls to 8-5 (6-2 Suburban Council).
==================================================
You've probably seen commercials touting Southern New Hampshire University on television. SNHU swept the College of St. Rose on Saturday , and it wasn't even close.

Adam Anderson (Saratoga) & Shane O'Dell (Schalmont) each tallied 15 points for the Golden Knights in a losing effort as SNHU defeated St. Rose, 83-65. The women fell, 57-41. Nina Fedullo (Amsterdam) had 10 points for the Lady Knights.
==================================================
Ivy League rivals Yale & Brown completed a weekend visit to the 518 on Saturday, with both teams winning.

Yale needed overtime to beat Union, 3-2. Brown came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat RPI, 3-2. The Engineers were done in by a suddenly punchless offense in the 2nd & 3rd periods.
==================================================
The rest of Saturday's high school scoreboard:

Hockey:

Shenendehowa 3, Massena 2.
Mohawks 3, LaSalle 1. The Cadets have gone a calendar year since their last win (17 straight losses). They'll need more contributions from their seniors if they're going to win this season.

Guilderville 5, Saratoga 3.
Albany Academy 2, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa 1.

Men's basketball:

Patroon Conference:

Taconic Hills 62, Cairo-Durham 41.
Greenville 55, Maple Hill 53.

 Union College's men's hockey team was without coach Rick Bennett on Friday, and will be without him until further notice due to Bennett being on paid administrative leave regarding unspecified allegations that were brought to the school's attention on Wednesday.

No problem. Union beat Brown, 3-1. The Dutchmen host Yale tonight after the Bulldogs downed RPI, 5-3, at the Houston Field House. Brown will be in Troy to face the Engineers.

Tonight's UAlbany-Stony Brook men's game can be seen on SNY (Spectrum Cable channel 320), with the cameras at SEFCU Arena. That's the good news. The bad? Most folks here will likely be tuned to the Bengals-Titans game on CBS.

High School Fridays: Troy @ Guilderland (women's basketball), 1/21/22

 There was a time when the Lady Dutch of Guilderland owned Troy High. Not so this season.

It's stunning to see Guilderland near the bottom of the Blue division in the Suburban Council, but there they are, as Troy came in tonight, looking to build momentum off Tuesday's win over Schenectady before heading to Kingston tomorrow.

It took the Lady Dutch until the 2nd quarter to finally realize that a full court trap press has been Troy's weakness this season. Troy uses a half court press in opposition. However, it seems coach Ryan Meikle has finally figured out how to beat the press. Troy led virtually all the way in this one. Makya Chapman tallied 10 points for the 2nd straight game, and this time was the only Troy player in double figures. Solaris Nunez added 8, as Troy has now won four of six with a 31-22 verdict.

Check the video. Guilderland actually has a broadcast team.

Troy, now 5-9 overall (3-7 Suburban Council) is 2-0 on the current road trip, which takes them to Kingston tomorrow, and then to their usual house of horrors at Shenendehowa next Friday.

Other scores:

Burnt Hills 63, Schenectady 25.
Bethlehem 72, Ballston Spa 22.

Full stats tomorrow.

Troy High sports update, 1/21

 Thursday was Senior Day at Uncle Sam Lanes as Troy High closed out the home portion of their schedule, with Christian Brothers Academy providing the opposition.

Olvia DeCitise carded her 2nd straight 700 series, finishing with a 737 triple, with a high single of 278, as Troy ran their winning streak to 7 in a row, beating the Brothers, 24 1/2 to 7 1/2.

Colin Shepard backed up DeCitise with a 644 triple, and Anthony Mainello just missed another 600, finishing with 599. Troy closes the home schedule with a 6-1 ledger (2-3 on the road), and will return to Del Lanes, where they've already beaten Albany, on Tuesday to face Bethlehem. The Flying Horses, sitting in 3rd place in the Suburban Council's Gray division behind Burnt Hills & Averill Park, will be looking for their first league title in the championships on February 9 at Boulevard Bowl.

It was not a good day for CBA, as their men's swim team, combined with Troy, is still looking for its first win of the season after dropping a 97-55 decision to Guilderville (Guilderland-Voorheesville) to fall to 0-5 on the season with three meets left.

Tonight, Troy's basketball teams are in the spotlight, as the men host Guilderland, while the women visit the Lady Dutch. Both teams will be heading to Kingston tomorrow.

News & notes

 After losing to previously winless Hartford on Monday, snapping a 7 game winning streak, UAlbany's women's team started what they hope is a new streak Wednesday, routing University of Maryland-Baltimore County, 69-40, in a businessman's lunch special at SEFCU Arena. The Lady Danes (4-1 America East, 12-5 overall) were without freshman Lilly Phillips (Cambridge), who sat out with an ankle injury. Kayla Cooper & Helene Haegerstrand led Albany with 14 points apiece. The game was also a homecoming for UMBC freshman Antonia May (Amsterdam), who didn't score during the game.

Grace Heeps (Columbia) had 3 points for the Lady Danes.

Later in the day, the men completed the sweep, dispatching the Retrievers, 66-54. Matt Cerutti led Albany with 20 points.
========================================
Olivia DeCitise made history a couple of years ago at Troy High as the first female player on the school's bowling team. The Flying Horses are hoping she isn't the last.

DeCitise led all scorers with a 715 triple as Troy ran their winning streak to 5 in a row, beating Shenendehowa, 22 1/2-9 1/2, at Uncle Sam Lanes on Wednesday afternoon. Troy hosts CBA this afternoon on Senior Day, as they'll close the regular season with a 2 match road trip to Bethlehem & Columbia next week.
==========================================
Siena College will have one less opponent---maybe---come next season.

Monmouth, out of New Jersey, is leaving the MAAC after this season, and will move to the Colonial Athletic Association, where UAlbany is a football-only member. Must be about the money. MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor is hoping to lure in 2 teams to fill the void and expand the league to 12 teams for 2022-3.

News & notes

 It might've been cold outside, but the scoring was hot at Uncle Sam Lanes on Tuesday afternoon, as Troy High ran its bowling winning streak to 4 matches in a row, decimating Niskayuna, 23-9.

Eric Balough was high scorer for Troy, scorching the maples for a school record 287 single game and 797 series. Colin Shepard, Olivia DeCitise, & Anthony Mainello all cracked the 600 barrier in support. The Troy keglers will host Shenendehowa today in a make-up match from last week, then CBA on Thursday.

Troy's sports information department, however, hasn't been too keen to submit game results of recent men's basketball games. To that end, there is no box score for last night's 78-77 nail biter over Schenectady, as John Killian's club (7-4) completed a season sweep of the Patriots, as the women did at the Riley Center earlier in the evening.

Speaking of which, Troy's scorekeeper, per the school's website, credited Ava Mamone with 15 points to lead the team, followed by Addie Borowsky with 14, and Makya Chapman with a season high 10. The box score shows Mamone with 13.

Early birds (Troy @ Schenectady, women's basketball, 1/18/22)

 When it was announced earlier in the day that the JV game between the Troy High & Schenectady women's basketball teams was postponed, likely due to COVID, it was agreed that the varsity game would move up to a 5 pm tip-off.

Ryan Meikle and the Lady Horses said, thank you very much, and proceeded to complete a season sweep of the Lady Patriots, 60-42. The only reason the score was that close was because coach Meikle lifted his starters late in the 3rd quarter, but that opened the door for the hosts to mount a minor comeback, outscoring Troy, 17-9, in the final frame.

Check the video:

Troy goes to 4-9 on the season (2-7 Suburban Council), and will continue their road trip in Guilderland on Friday, then at Kingston on Saturday as part of a men's & women's doubleheader. Schenectady is locked in the basement of the Suburban Council's Grey division.
