High School Fridays: Shuffle the schedule and try again

 It's become official within the last hour or two that tonight's Class B tripleheader at Hudson Valley Community College has been postponed due to weather.

Section II issued the following:

HVCC's campus is closed today, which made the postponements inevitable.

Thursday's sectional scoreboard, 2/24

 This is not how Bethlehem wanted to end the winter season.

While the men's basketball team punched its ticket to Hudson Valley Community College for the Class AA quarter-finals, scheduled for tomorrow, the hockey team, seeking to regain the Devecchio Cup after losing to Adirondack last year, won't even get a rematch with the Rivermen in the CDHSHL playoffs.

The Skating Eagles instead fell to Albany Academy, 6-4, Thursday night, sending the Cadets to Union College on Sunday for a semi-final round date with Shenendehowa. The Guilderville Storm will play Adirondack after beating the Capital District Jets, 5-0.

Shen-Academy will kick things off at 4:45 pm on Sunday, with Storm-Rivermen at 7:15.

Bethlehem's women's basketball team started with so much promise, opening the season 7-0. Unfortunately, an injury to Ellie Cerf and a 5 game losing streak in the middle of the campaign cost the Lady Eagles the Suburban Council Blue Division, and, on Thursday, their hope for revenge against Albany was thwarted, as the Falcons advance, 46-34. Albany will next play Shaker, which beat Saratoga, 62-39, at HVCC next week. Bethlehem's women finish 11-9 on the season, and will have key players like Cerf returning next season.

The rest of Thursday's basketball:

Women's Class AA:

Colonie 59, Columbia 51.
Shenendehowa 63, Niskayuna 34.

Women's Class A:

Queensbury 63, Academy of Holy Names 47.
Averill Park 81, South Glens Falls 22. The Lady Bulldogs ended their season in the same place where it started, having lost to AP in a pre-season tournament in December.

Catholic Central 37, Amsterdam 28.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 52, Troy 32. The Spartans defeated Troy for the 3rd time this season, as Ryan Meikle's club (6-16) now must spend the off-season learning how to offset the full court pressure defense, or incorporate into their own program.

We must again stress that due to weather, check with your schools or Hudson Valley Community College to see if tonight's games will be played. Section II may have to scramble to reschedule if they have to postpone games tonight. The first game of the Class B men's triple-header at HVCC is scheduled for 5 pm.

Wednesday's sectional scoreboard, 2/23

 Given all the press surrounding her during the season, you'd think that Catskill's Janay Brantley would carry the Lady Cats to the Class B finals.

Fonda-Fultonville had other ideas.

Brantley led all scorers with 23 points. However, Fonda-Fultonville used a more balanced offensive attack, with four players in double figures, to upset Catskill, 68-47.

The Section II hockey tournament began quarter-final play on Wednesday, and, for now, form is holding.

Defending champion Adirondack, the #3 seed, defeated Saratoga, 6-2. The Rivermen await the winner of today's game between the Capital District Jets and the Guilderville Storm. Meanwhile, top-seeded Shenendehowa downed the Niskayna-Schenectady-Amsterdam Mohawks, 5-1. Up next for the Plainsmen will be either Bethlehem or Albany Academy. The semi-finals are Sunday at Union College.
===============================================

Mechanicville vs. Fonda-Fultonville.

Greenwich 78, Chatham 20.
Berne-Knox-Westerlo 55, Schoharie 42.

Heatly 60, Germantown 58.

Shenendehowa 68, Schenectady 44. Mason Courtney led the way for Shen with 24 points. Miles Peterson added 15, and Robby Hicks chipped in 11.

Albany 59, Guilderland 51. Isaiah Austin had 23 points to lead all scorers for the Falcons. Albany will play Shen Saturday at HVCC.

CBA 55, Columbia 39. The Brothers led, 15-7, after the first quarter, and were never threatened.

Saturday @ HVCC:

Shen vs. Albany, 1:30 pm.

Niskayuna vs. LaSalle, 5 pm.
Green Tech vs. Bethlehem, 6:30 pm (approximate).

Catholic Central 77, Cobleskill-Richmondville 38. The Crusaders, in their final season in Troy, have plunged from Class AA to Class B in recent times, due likely to declining enrollment.

Fonda-Fultonville 46, Broadalbin-Perth 37.
Schuylerville 79, Hudson 59.

Greenville 66, Mechanicville 62.
Glens Falls 60, Watervliet 57.

The first round concludes tonight with Schalmont and Tamarac squaring off at Averill Park. The quarter-finals are scheduled for Friday & Saturday at HVCC, but the weather could change all that.

CDHSHL playoff preview

 Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, the Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) can go about the business of deciding the 2022 champion, beginning Wednesday night.

The quarterfinal pairings:

Wednesday:

Mohawks @ Shenendehowa. With winter recess this week, some games will be played before dark, which will give parents of some of the schools time to find their way to basketball sectionals.

The Mohawks, perennial doormats until this season, upset Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa, 6-3, Monday afternoon, as the Spartan Scotties finish with a 6 game losing streak. Shen claimed the regular season title by just 1/2 a point, but coach Juan de la Rocha won't be satisfied until he has the Delvecchio Cup back in his hands after so long.

Saratoga @ Adirondack. The Rivermen begin defense of their championship, seeded third. Saratoga ended LaSalle's season on Sunday night, and could have an upset or two in them. The winner would play the winner of the CD Jets-Guilderville game when the scene shifts to Union College on Sunday.

Thursday:

Jets @ Guilderville: The Jets defeated CBA for the 2nd time in a week, 6-0, on Monday afternoon. Things were so bad, CBA's YouTube stream crashed multiple times out of frustration. CBA limps home on a 5 game losing streak. The Storm, like the Jets and Mohawks, have been non-contenders in recent times, but fortunes change every so often.

Bethlehem @ Albany Academy: The former champs need to take the first step to reclaim the cup after Adirondack won the title last year. Albany Academy has rebounded after some down years, even sweeping the Battle of The Cadets from LaSalle this season. This should be one to watch.

Predictions:

Shen over Mohawks.

Saratoga upsets Adirondack.

Jets over Guilderville.

Academy over Bethlehem.

Of course, I could be wrong.

News & notes

 Siena College's men's basketball team is peaking at the right time, and that's bad news for the rest of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

Javion McCollum & Anthony Gaines had 15 points each for the Saints, and Jackson Stormo added 15, as Siena downed St. Peter's, 84-70, at MVP Arena on Sunday afternoon. Siena heads out to New Jersey for a rematch with MAAC lame duck Monmouth Tuesday night.
=========================================
The Capital District High School Hockey League opened its playoffs on Sunday night with the first of their play-in games at Weibel Avenue Rink in Saratoga.

For LaSalle, what has to be the worst season in school history has mercifully come to an end, as the Cadets dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2, in double overtime, to the homestanding Blue Streaks. Unfortunately, no stats are available as of press time because the score was submitted so late. LaSalle finishes 1-20 overall for the season, and you might have to dig into the archives to find a worst season than this one.

Saratoga will face defending champion Adirondack on Wednesday night. Today, there are two games scheduled. CBA will seek revenge on the Capital District Jets, six days after the Jets blew out the Brothers, 7-2. Also, the Mohawks will visit Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa. The Spartan Scotties fell out of contention late in the regular season, and will look to try to get back in the hunt. The CBA-Jets winner, by the way, will face 2nd seeded Guilderville, while Shenendehowa awaits the Mohawks-Burnt Hills winner. Bethlehem & Albany Academy will meet on Wednesday.

News & notes

 The commercials will soon hit the air during WWE programming, but be prepared to pay through the nose for tickets to see Smackdown at MVP Arena on Friday, April 22, three weeks after Wrestlemania.

The lowest available ticket price as of press time is $50, as opposed to a more consumer-friendly $15-25. The factors in the increase likely include renovations to the 32 year old arena, though we should be well past that by now. It all goes to show once again how little WWE CEO-Chairman Vince McMahon, 76, actually cares about his audience.
=========================================
It was Senior Day at RPI for the women's hockey team. Unfortunately, Dartmouth decided to crash the party, posting a 3-1 win over the Lady Engineers in the season finale for RPI.

The RPI men didn't fare much better, falling to Yale, 5-2. The Bulldogs will come to Troy next Saturday for the season finale, with Dartmouth coming in on Friday.
=========================================
College baseball season has started, albeit quietly, with everything else going on. UAlbany & Siena are on the road this weekend, but the results aren't so good so far.

UAlbany opens with SEC power Georgia, and has lost the first two games, the latest a 7-6 walkoff on Saturday. Siena is wrapping up their series vs. Central Florida today, hoping to put some offense together after being outscored, 28-2, in two losses. Ben Seiler (Albany Academy) started and took the loss for Siena on Saturday, knocked out in the 3rd inning.

Meanwhile, the College of St. Rose was swept by West Chester, 8-0 and 18-4, continuing a miserable trend for the 518 in the first weekend of the season.
============================================
The Albany FireWolves may want to call National Grid for some help with their 4th quarter offense.

After blowing an 8-5 lead at Buffalo on Friday in a 12-8 loss, the 'Wolves returned home to MVP Arena, and, despite a first half hat trick from Andrew Kew, fell to Toronto, 13-9, to drop to 4-6 on the season. The top 4 teams advance to the playoffs, and time is running out on Albany.
===========================================
After it'd been reported that Bishop Maginn was closing its doors in June after 45 seasons, you have to wonder if this had an adverse effect on the school's basketball teams.

On Friday, the men were eliminated by Voorheesville, 59-56, in a very competitive game.

24 hours later, the Lady Griffins were blown out by Schalmont, 91-25. Karissa Antoine led all scorers with 24 points, one of four Lady Sabres in double figures.

Maginn's closure leaves the Central Hudson Valley League scrambling again to find another team, since Maginn had, in effect, replaced Emma Willard when the latter school went independent 3 years ago (and have since joined another league).
==============================================
It was also Senior Day for UAlbany's men's basketball team, and the Great Danes celebrated by beating New Hampshire, 70-65. Jamel Horton led the way for Albany with 24 points. The women made it a clean sweep, beating the Wildcats on the road, 55-46. Helene Haegerstrand led Albany with 18 points. Kayla Cooper & Grace Heeps added 10 points each.
==============================================
The rest of Saturday's sectional action:

Class B:

Ichabod Crane 69, Voorheesville 34. This one was over by halftime. Ashley Ames, the coach's daughter, led all scorers with 16 points.

Albany Academy 57, Glens Falls 56.
Broadalbin-Perth 39, Ravena 28.
Fonda-Fultonville 50, Schuylerville 40.
Catskill 54, Cohoes 28. Janay Brantley had 23 points to lead the Cats.
Mechanicville 81, Greenville 51.
Tamarac 61, Johnstown 50.

Wednesday's quarterfinal pairings:

Albany Academy @ Ichabod Crane.
Broadalbin-Perth @ Mechanicville.
Tamarac @ Schalmont.
Fonda-Fultonville @ Catskill.

Class C:

Cambridge 53, Mayfield 42.
Berne-Knox-Westerlo 52, Rensselaer 38.
Schoharie 48, Whitehall 40.
Maple Hill 54, Hoosick Falls 47.
Corinth 43, Hoosic Valley 27.
Chatham 48, Warrensburg 36.
Greenwich 89, Galway 24.
Duanesburg 72, Hadley-Luzerne 29.

Wednesday's quarterfinal pairings:

Schoharie @ Berne-Knox-Westerlo.
Chatham @ Greenwich.
Cambridge @ Duanesburg.
Corinth @ Maple Hill.

While the basketball tournament takes a break today & tomorrow, that allows the hockey sectionals to begin with play-in games today & tomorrow. LaSalle will look to play spoiler as they will meet Saratoga this afternoon.

Saturday, February 19, 2022

Friday's sectional scoreboard, 2/18

 Troy High snapped a six game losing streak Friday in thrashing Lansingburgh, 61-19. The Troy defense held the Lady Knights without a point in the 2nd & 4th quarters in a rare (for Troy) dominating performance. Ava Mamone led Troy with 19 points, and Makya Chapman added 10.

Check the video:

Unfortunately, Troy's reward is a 3rd meeting with Burnt Hills in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Emma Willard, which has lost to Troy in the 1st round in 2019-20, fell to South Glens Falls, 58-51. The Bulldogs will play Averill Park in the quarters, another rematch, this one from AP's preseason tournament back in December.

The rest of the scoreboard:

Men's class B play-in games:

Schalmont 65, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons 53.
Voorheesville 59, Bishop Maginn 56.
Greenville 72, Ravena 50.

Women's class AA 1st round:

Niskayuna 61, Guilderland 39.

Class A:

Amsterdam 66, Mohonasen 39.
Academy of Holy Names 57, Scotia-Glenville 43.

News & notes

 After earning his 800th career win last season, Craig Phillips has retired as baseball coach at Fort Plain. On Wednesday, the school announced that Dale Smith will succeed Phillips in the Fort Plain dugout when play begins (weather permitting, of course) in early April. Phillips began his run in 1975, and, with his school in the Adirondack League, didn't have the attention of larger schools such as CBA, Shenendehowa, or Saratoga. Congratulation, coach. You've earned it.
=========================================
UAlbany swept its games against Binghamton on Wednesday night.

The women remain undefeated at home (13-0) as they dunked the Bearcats, 61-48. Helene Haegerstrand led the Lady Danes with 15 points. Local products Grace Heeps & Lilly Phillips had just 2 points each. Abby Ray (Saratoga) didn't play.

Meanwhile, in Western NY, Albany clipped Binghamton, 68-67. Jarvis Doles led the way with 21 points for the Great Danes.
========================================
Bishop Maginn rose from the ashes of Vincentian Institute & Cardinal McCloskey's closings in 1977, and, in basketball in particular, was a powerhouse in the Big 10 in the 80's & 90's.

Declining enrollment, however, forced the school to move from its original campus on Slingerland Street in Albany to its current home on Park Avenue. Things, though, began to improve on the court in recent times, with the Griffins moving from the Big 10 to first the Western Athletic Conference, then, presently, the Central Hudson Valley League.

Come June, however, after 45 seasons, it ends. The Albany Catholic Diocese announced Wednesday that Maginn will close its doors after its annual commencement exercises in June. Current underclassmen (Grades 9-11) will end up transferring elsewhere, to either CBA or Albany or other schools.
============================================
Even though the coaches of the Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) will meet tonight, the seedings are starting to take shape for the 2022 playoffs in a more organic fashion.

Last place LaSalle, for example, travels to Saratoga for a play-in game on Sunday (puck drop 5 pm), this after the Blue Streaks were thumped by defending champion Adirondack, 9-2, on Wednesday.

Shenendehowa clinched the regular season title, beating Queensbury, 6-3, and will close the regular season vs. the Guilderville Storm tomorrow.
============================================
Wednesday's high school basketball scoreboard:

Men:

Fort Plain 62, Mount Anthony 27. The Patriots' winless tour of the 518 ends with another blowout loss. Fort Plain's Robert Jordan scored his 1,000th point in the game, finishing with 21.

Warrensburg 43, Schroon Lake 37.

Women:

Central Hudson Valley League:

Bishop Maginn 55, Germantown 44.

Western Athletic Conference:

Mekeel Christian 49, Middleburgh 30.

News & notes

 As proof that real injuries do happen in professional wrestling, Meghan Bayne, the current Immortal Championship Wrestling women's champion, is out until November at the latest after suffering a torn ACL in a recent match out of town. The Immortal troupe has or had an event scheduled in St. Johnsville this month, a fund raiser for their fire department. If they hit the home town again this year, maybe ye scribe can check into it.
==============================================
Meanwhile, Big Time Wrestling, not to be confused with the show built around the Sheik's promotion in Detroit a lifetime ago, hits the Washington Avenue Armory on Sunday, March 13 at 7:30 pm. Newly crowned NWA champion Matt Cardona (formerly Zack Ryder in WWE 2007-2019) and Brian Myers (formerly Curt Hawkins, currently with Impact Wrestling) will team to face the Hardy Boys, Matt & Jeff, who will pair up for the first time in 3 years. Cardona put the word out himself on Twitter on Monday. The current BTW champion, Richard Holliday, appears nationally for Major League Wrestling, and will defend his title vs. Rochester native Colin Delaney, whom some of you might remember from his days as a TV jobber for WWE's version of ECW. Bring your ear plugs, because the acoustics in the Armory probably haven't changed since the last NXT card there in 2019.
===============================================
Lansingburgh won the Class B men's bowling sectionals Tuesday at Boulevard Bowl, clipping Colonial Council rival Schalmont by a mere 26 pins. As an indicator of what kind of winter season it's been, outside of basketball, LaSalle finished dead last.
===============================================
Whatever good fortune RPI's women's hockey team had at the start of the season is long gone. The Lady Engineers were shutout, 4-0, by Quinnipiac in a twilight game at the Houston Field House on Tuesday. RPI falls to 9-21 overall (5-15 ECAC).

News & notes

==============================================
Siena's women's basketball team dropped another tough one on the road, this one vs. Manhattan, 69-61. Rayshel Brown had 18 points before fouling out with just a shade over 3 minutes left in the game. Again, no box score.
==============================================

Silver freezes over (Niskayuna @ Troy, 2/14/22)

 Niskayuna had clinched the Blue Division title in the Suburban Council by the time they came to Zotto Memorial Gym at Troy High tonight. Troy had conceded the Gray Division after losing to Albany five nights ago. It was Senior Night for the Flying Horses, but would the Silver Warriors ruin the night, as Bethlehem did to the women on Friday?

Nope. Once Troy took the lead in the 1st quarter, they never gave it up, although there were some anxious moments in the 4th quarter, especially after sophomore sensation Dan Covington picked up 2 offensive fouls, and after getting called for his 3rd on defense, was also hit with a technical foul.

However, Niskayuna couldn't capitalize. They knew their undefeated record in the Suburban Council was on the line, but while both teams had issues with free throw shooting, the Silver Warriors could not make up enough ground in time, even though Troy was giving them every opportunity to do so. In the end, the streak had ended, and Niskayuna (16-2 overall, 13-1 Suburban Council) fell, 60-54, as Troy goes into the sectionals on a 3 game winning streak, running their record to 12-8 (10-5 Suburban).

By this time Wednesday, both teams will know who and where they'll play as sectional play begins this weekend. Hearing talk that there might not be any home court advantage in the sectionals even before the quarter-finals. The Wasaren League tournament, for example, was played at a Suburban Council school (Saratoga) over the weekend.

Check the video:

In women's action, Nisky defeated Troy, 49-29, so Troy (5-15 overall, 3-12 Suburban) limps into the sectionals on a six game losing streak.

Also, Averill Park clipped Shenendehowa in a battle of division leaders in women's play, 51-50.

News & notes

 Apparently, whomever sends in the box scores for Troy High's home basketball games was among the missing Saturday, as there is no box score for the Flying Horses' 63-33 demolition of Mount Anthony Union. Dereliction of duty much?
=========================================
The Albany FireWolves had a chance to even the score with Rochester on the road Saturday night, but it didn't happen. Joe Resartitis' 4 goals weren't enough, as Albany fell, 15-13. With the game airing locally on WNYA, the real question was whether or not anyone would watch opposite the Olympics and college basketball on other channels.
=========================================
College lacrosse season started Saturday, and for Siena, the results were a mixed bag.

The women routed New Hampshire, 18-8, while the men fell to Long Island University, 14-7. The women travel to Plattsburgh on Friday.
=========================================
It was a men's & women's separate admission doubleheader at SEFCU Arena on Saturday, as UAlbany hosted Vermont.

The Catamounts have been a nemesis for the Albany men for years, and Saturday was no different, as Vermont downed Albany, 76-63, sending the Great Danes to their 4th loss in their last 5 games. Isaiah Powell (Colonie) had 8 points for the Catamounts.

Earlier in the day, the women defeated Vermont, 54-52, to remain undefeated at home. Grace Heeps (Columbia) contributed 8 points for the Lady Danes (17-7, 10-3 America East).
==========================================
LaSalle hockey coach Tim Flanigan might have to seriously consider declining a play-in game next weekend to spare his Cadets further mental torture.

LaSalle's regular season ended in a 7-1 loss to Bethlehem on Saturday on the road. The Eagles are using their YouTube stream on campus only, as their hockey games are off-site. No box score was supplied to the press. LaSalle is 1-13 in league play, 1-18 overall, and the goal disparity is, well, for a lack of a better term, embarrassing, outscored by 70 goals this season. The play-in games start next Sunday.
===========================================
RPI had its Big Red Freakout on Saturday night, but there wasn't much to cheer for, as Colgate defeated the Engineers, 3-2. There's likely a boycott on a certain brand of toothpaste and mouthwash for the day.

Colgate also defeated RPI in women's play, 3-0.

Meanwhile, Cornell defeated Union, 5-2, after getting upset by RPI on Friday. The Big Red also won the women's game, 5-3.
=============================================
Three weeks ago, Troy High's women's team lost to Kingston for the first time.

On Saturday, Bethlehem, coming off a blowout of Troy on the road, returned home, and drubbed the Lady Tigers, 68-47. Maren Louridas led all scorers with 26 points, while Ellie Cerf added 18, and Kaitlyn Robbins chipped in 8. The Lady Eagles will close with Schalmont (Colonial Council) on Monday.
==============================================
Section2basketball.com was down for most of Saturday, and as of press time, no results had been posted.
==============================================
LaSalle's basketball team, playing its 4th game this week, defeated Catholic Central, 72-67. 8th grader Darien Moore had 35 points to lead all scorers for Catholic Central, but Adam Myers led 3 Cadets in double figures with 26.

Saturday, February 12, 2022

All that was missing was the maple syrup (Mt. Anthony Union @ Troy, 2/12/22)

 After a tough win over Bethlehem less than 24 hours earlier, Troy High men's basketball coach John Killian wanted a showcase performance from his team before they close the regular season on Monday with a Senior Night game vs. undefeated Niskayuna.

Wish granted, with interest.

Mount Anthony Union, a Vermont school, was playing its 3rd game in the 518 zone this week, having lost earlier in the week to Hoosick Falls and Albany Academy. They hung with Troy in the first half, and led, 24-21, at the break.

And, then, the beatdown began.

Troy came out of the break re-establishing control, and held the Patriots to just 3 points in the 3rd quarter, and 6 in the 4th. Of Troy's starters, only Chase Peterson was still in the game late in the 4th quarter, leading the 2nd unit, as the Flying Horses cruised to a 63-33 victory. Mount Anthony falls to 2-10 overall on the season after their second straight blowout loss (Academy similarly routed them on Tuesday). Troy improves to 10-7 overall (8-4 Suburban Council), with Niskayuna looming on Monday.

News & notes`

 It is alumni weekend at RPI, with Cornell and Colgate in town, the latter for the annual Big Red Freakout game taking place tonight.

The Engineers started the party on Friday with a 6-2 upset win over Cornell, including two empty net goals in the final minute and change of the game.

Imagine what it's going to be like at Houston Field House tonight.
=================================================
Siena came from behind, in front of a national television audience watching on ESPN U, to beat Iona, 74-60, at MVP Arena on Friday. The game time was moved to after 9 pm to accommodate the network's schedule. For Iona coach Rick Pitino, it was his first visit to the 518 since the early 80's, when Siena played their home games on campus at what is now UHY Arena.
=================================================
It may be mid-February, but college lacrosse season starts today for Siena. The Saints' teams open on the road, with the men at Long Island University, and the women at New Hampshire. It's just a matter of time before the rest of the 518's college lacrosse teams begin play.
=================================================
The end of the season can't come soon enough for LaSalle's hockey team.

Tim Flanigan's club closes the regular season today at Bethlehem after getting shut out by Albany Academy, 2-0, on Senior Night. Apparently, LaSalle couldn't be bothered to do a YouTube stream of the game. On the plus side, Flanigan has found a new star in 8th grader Chase Rose, who leads the team in scoring (7 goals, 4 assists, for 11 points). Now, if only they can figure out how to get the offense & defense on the same page.
====================================================
The rest of Friday's high school hockey:

Mohawks 8, Burnt Hills 1.
Queensbury 5, Saratoga 0.
Shenendehowa 6, Adirondack 4. The Plainsmen are idle until Wednesday, when they travel to Queensbury. Adirondack hosts Burnt Hills on Monday, and Saratoga on Wednesday.
====================================================
We told you how Bethlehem routed Troy in women's basketball Friday, to end a 5 game losing streak. Maren Louridas led all scorers with 20 points. Paige Davenport added 10, while Ellie Cerf & Kaitlyn Robbins chipped in 9 apiece. Addie Borowsky led Troy with 8 points.

In sharp contrast, on the men's side, Dan Covington led all scorers with 22 points, as Troy's men broke a two game losing streak in beating the Eagles, 57-54. Ali Weatherly led Bethlehem with 21.

High School Fridays: Party Crashers (Bethlehem @ Troy, women's basketball, 2/11/22)

 It was Senior Night at Troy High for the women's basketball team. After seniors Makya Chapman, Gianna Carbonaro, & Solaris Nunez were honored in a pre-game ceremony, it was time to get down to business.

Unfortunately, the Lady Horses forgot that part of the memo.

Bethlehem, having lost five straight themselves, needed to get back on track in a major way in their final Suburban Council game of the season, hoping for a favorable seeding when pairings for the sectionals are announced on Wednesday.

Mission accomplished.

The Lady Eagles stopped the bleeding by holding Troy to 3 points in the 1st quarter, 2 in the 4th quarter, despite not consistently using the full court pressure that most teams have used against Troy. It got to the point where coach Kim Wise began pulling her starters in the 3rd quarter, as the Lady Eagles never felt threatened at all. Troy drops its 5th straight, 78-22.

Or, in the words of Keith Olbermann back in the day, guhhhh.

Bethlehem will finish with non-league games tomorrow vs. Kingston, which has also beaten Troy, and on Monday vs. Schalmont. Troy finishes on the road at Niskayuna on Monday.

Check the video.

Other women's scores as of press time:

Cohoes 55, Cobleskill-Richmondville 42.
Ichabod Crane 54, Ravena 44.
Catholic Central 59, Academy of Holy Names 53.
Waterford 33, Stillwater 29.

The men's game between Troy & Bethlehem is not available on YouTube at present, as Bethlehem cut off their stream as the varsity teams were warming up. Full stats tomorrow.

News & notes

 Columbia captured the Suburban Council women's bowling championship on Wednesday. Results did not make some media outlets in time for publication on Thursday.

And, on Thursday, Mohonasen added the Class A women's title to the Colonial Council title they won earlier in the week. Schalmont won the B title, outpointing Lansingburgh by nearly 70 total pins. Middleburgh won the C/D title.

The men's results have still not been published.

While we don't know how Troy High did in the men's tournament, they did cop some hardware on Thursday.

Olivia DeCitise was named to a composite all-star team that will take part in state competition. Eric Balogh & Colin Shepard were named as honorable mentions in the league. Congratulations to all three.
===========================================
Has Siena's women's team peaked in basketball?

The Lady Saints dropped a 70-59 decision to St. Peter's on Thursday night. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) had a season high 10 points in a losing effort.
===============================================
Hoosick Falls men's basketball coach Mike Lilac, Jr. won his 400th career game Thursday, as Hoosick Falls demolished hapless Berlin-New Lebanon, 70-24. No box score has been provided for the game. Lilac joins his father, Mike, Sr., in a very exclusive coaching fraternity with the milestone win.
==================================================
We've talked about how there have been shadows passing over the scoreboards at Troy High this season. It's been happening at Lansingburgh, too, and on at least one occasion during a LaSalle hockey game at HVCC.

At Ichabod Crane in Chatham, however, it's more of an electrical issue at Riders games. The scoreboard flickers throughout the game, which suggests that some work needs to be done after the season is over.

For evidence, we offer Thursday's Riders-LaSalle varsity game.

For the record, Brett Richards led all scorers for Ichabod Crane with 32 points, but LaSalle's Adam Myers & Jason Bradwell had 15 each, backed by JJ Thompson with 11, as LaSalle won the game, 74-64.

News & notes

 We were hoping to have the results of Wednesday's Suburban Council bowling championships, but the results were not submitted to the local press in time for publication at this time. We will be checking into it, though, and hope to have something soon.
==========================================
Of the four former Big 10 schools that had moved to the Suburban Council in 2015, Albany was the only one that hadn't won a men's division title. CBA won a Gray division title in 2018, then was moved to the Blue division. Troy has won 3. Schenectady won 1 outright in 2017, then was in a logjam 2 years ago with Averill Park & Columbia.

The Falcons' men's team may finally have found their winning formula.

Isaiah Austin has been an emerging star for the Falcons this season, and he led all scorers with 23 points to lead Albany past Troy, 76-66, Wednesday. Terrence Clark & Dan Covington led Troy with 19 points apiece as the Flying Horses dropped their 2nd straight and have now lost four of their last five. Three-point shooting, or a lack thereof, was what did in Troy, as they were just 2-13 from beyond the arc, with Covington hitting both treys.

Troy closes the road portion of their schedule Friday at Bethlehem.
=========================================
LaSalle saw its modest two game winning streak end Wednesday in a heartbreaking loss to Mohonasen, 44-43. JJ Thompson & Adam Myers led the Cadets with 10 points each. LaSalle has dropped five of their last seven.
==========================================
UAlbany was swept by Maine Wednesday night. The women were on the road, losing, 64-55. Grace Heeps (Columbia) & Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) were held to 2 points each.

Back at SEFCU Arena, Albany fell to Maine, 73-63. Matt Cerutti led the Great Danes with 14 points. The Danes will play Vermont on Saturday.
===========================================
Shenendehowa multi-sport star Mason Courtney is staying close to home to play college ball.

Courtney committed to Siena on Wednesday, and should give the Saints some help on the court next season.
===========================================
Former Union hockey players Spencer & Parker Foo are playing for Team USA at the Olympics, and should get some significant TV time as the men's competition gets underway. Professionally, the Foos play for a Beijing-based squad playing in Russia. Go figure.
===========================================
Wednesday's high school hockey slate was full of early-bird specials a couple of games were played before dark.

Wednesday's results:

Bethlehem 8, CBA 1.
Albany Academy 7, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa 4.
Queensbury 3, Adirondack 0.
Saratoga 4, Shenendehowa 3.

3 1/2 points separates the top five teams in the league as we enter the final weekend of regular season play. Shen leads Adirondack, the defending champions, by a half-point, and the two teams will meet on Friday. Bethlehem is idle until Saturday when they host LaSalle. The Cadets, in turn, host Albany Academy on Friday, hoping to spoil the party. Bethlehem is 2 points behind Shen. Academy is 2 1/2 back with games not only against LaSalle, but CBA on Saturday as well.

News & notes

 We all know the 518 is largely Yankee country. Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro grew up a Yankee fan, and, today, leads the Royals ...
