News & notes

 Women's hockey in Section II isn't just women on boys' teams (i.e. LaSalle). There is a women's league that isn't getting the attention it deserves.

That being said, Adirondack United won its 2nd straight regional title Saturday, downing Beekmantown, 1-0. Aside from the Glens Falls Post-Star, there is very little written about the United, and zilch about teams in their league. Sure, there's feature pieces in the Daily Gazette & Albany Times-Union today, but what about during the rest of the season?

Oh, yeah, not enough reporters.

The CDHSHL has decided that both semi-finals will be Wednesday night after Saratoga shut out Bethlehem, 4-0, on Saturday. The Saratoga-Albany Academy game will start at 7, with LaSalle-Shenendehowa dropping the puck 40 minutes later in Clifton Park. The winners meet next Sunday in what might be the last high school game at Union College's Messa Rink.
======================================================
Last year, the Colonie men's basketball team reached the Class AAA finals, only to lose to Green Tech. This year, Greg Davis' club is under .500, and picked up just their 6th win of the season Saturday, closing their regular season schedule with a 64-38 win over Middletown. At this time last year, the Wolfpack were undefeated. This year? 6-14 going into sectional play. Colonie will next play Shen on Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College.

Team USA defeated Columbia, 2-0, in game 1 of the SheBelieves Cup on Thursday. It doesn't appear, though, that Clare Hutton (Bethlehem) was a factor in the win. Next game is Sunday.
=========================================
Thursday's high school scoreboard:

Women's basketball:

Stillwater 63, Coxsackie-Athens 37.

Shaker 63, Pine Bush 54.

Cambridge 46, Waterford 35.
==========================================
UAlbany swept Maine in Thursday's games.

In Maine, the women dominated the Black Bears, 56-40. Jessica Tomasetti led Albany with 17 points. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) added 7, and Meghan Huerter came off the bench with just 2 points in 9 minutes.

At Broadview Center, Justin Neely scored 29 points to lead Albany past Maine, 79-68. Amare Marshall added 18 for Albany.

News & notes

 The SheBelieves Cup women's soccer tournament begins tonight with Team USA, featuring Bethlehem's Clare Hutton, taking on Colombia in Houston. The game will air at 8 pm on TBS and, for Spanish viewers, Universo. Max & Peacock share streaming rights.

The downside, of course, is that the game will opposite the conclusion of the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off between USA & Canada (ESPN, 8 pm), and will finish before the hockey does.
=================================================
Albany Academy's men's basketball team plays an independent schedule, and does not compete in the Section II tournament. They had the lone game on the schedule Wednesday, routing Lawrence Woodmere, 77-50.
===================================================
The field is now set for the CDHSHL quarterfinals, which will begin Friday.

On Wednesday, Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa defeated Guilderville, 5-1, and CBA clipped the hapless CD Jets, 3-2. The Jets finished the season on a 9 game losing streak, locked in the CDHSHL basement.

Looking ahead to the quarters:

Friday:

Burnt Hills @ Shenendehowa, 2:45 pm. The defending champions are the opening act, taking on a Spartan Scotties team that has won their last two, both against the Storm. Conversely, Shen has dropped their last two, leading some to think maybe an upset is nigh. Nope. Shen will be well rested after nearly a week off.

Pick: Shen.

CBA @ LaSalle, 7:15 pm. As of press time, the site still has not been confirmed, due likely to venue availability that would allow the Cadets to play at Knickerbacker Arena in Lansingburgh, where they're 2-0-2. The teams split the season series, so anything is possible. CBA has won its last 2, while LaSalle is on a 4 game winning streak.

Pick: LaSalle.

Albany Academy @ Adirondack, 7:40 pm. The "other" Cadets have dropped their last 2, while the Rivermen won their finale. It was not so long ago that Adirondack had won the league title. In fact, it was about 2-3 years ago. They may be peaking at the right time.

Pick: Adirondack.

Saturday:

Bethlehem @ Saratoga, 7 pm. When was the last time the Blue Streaks were the champs until this year? I can't recall. Anyway, this should be a good game. The Eagles have the momentum after beating the Hawks on Tuesday, while Saratoga has been licking its collective wounds after losing their regular season finale. Bethlehem, of the teams in the field, seems likely to pull an upset.

Pick: Bethlehem.

Of course, I could be wrong.
=================================================
While we don't report on it, esports has become a thing in high schools. Troy High, for example, has an esports program, and now, neighboring RPI and the ECAC are joining the fray at the college level.

Here's a quickie from WNYT.

Competitive video game leagues? What next?

Speaking of Troy, sophomore superstar Stetson Merritt warmed up for the sectionals by torching Schenectady for 47 points in their win on Tuesday.

2025 men's basketball sectional pairings revealed

 By delaying the women's sectional pairings to Friday, Section II suits wasted little time in putting together this year's men's basketball tournaments. One big change this year is that the championship games will be at Hudson Valley Community College March 8-9, likely due to the Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls being booked for the Adirondack Thunder and/or other events.

This year's field:

March 2:

Saratoga vs. Shaker, approximately 2:30 pm.

The finals are also at HVCC, on March 9.

Class AA:

Tuesday:

Ballston Spa @ Queensbury. Winner to play Niskayuna @ HVCC March 1.

Columbia @ Bethlehem. Winner plays Amsterdam.

Mohonasen @ South Glens Falls. Winner to play LaSalle in what amounts to a home game for the Cadets @ HVCC.

The semi-finals will be at Cool Insuring March 5-6, with the title game right back at HVCC on March 9.

Schalmont @ Watervliet.

Scotia-Glenville @ Hudson.

Cohoes @ Gloversville. Winner to play Hudson Falls.

The quarterfinals will be at Guilderland March 2. Semis at Cool Insuring March 5. Title game at HVCC March 8.

Class B:

Friday:

Cambridge-Salem @ Coxsackie-Athens. Winner to play Hoosick Falls.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons @ Schuylerville. Winner plays Mechanicville.

Rensselaer @ Cairo-Durham. Winner to play Voorheesville.

Tuesday:

Tamarac @ Corinth.

Taconic Hills @ Greenville.

Catskill @ Fonda-Fultonville.

Doane Stuart @ Hawthorne Valley.

Germantown @ Fort Ann.

News & notes

 Joseph Girard III had his high school number retired prior to Glens Falls' home game on Friday. Unlike when Shenendehowa retired Kevin Huerter's number a couple of weeks ago, the Black Bears won. I don't think Girard has any regrets about not getting drafted last summer.
==================================================
When the seedings for the basketball sectionals are revealed later this week, some teams will, understandably, sit out due to poor performance.

For example, Schenectady, winless in women's action, will not participate, leaving a 6 team field for Class AAA.

In Class A, Gloversville, Hudson Falls, Hudson, & Emma Willard are opting out, although Colonial Council doormats Cohoes, Ravena, & Lansingburgh, will play. The Lady Knights, like Schenectady, have not won a game this season.

In Class B, Taconic Hills, Cairo-Durham, Canajoharie-Fort Plain, & Fonda-Fultonville will not play. In fact, I suspect Fonda-Fultonville didn't field a women's team this season. In Class C, North Warren, Granville, Middleburgh, Schoharie, Berlin-New Lebanon, & Hadley-Luzerne will pass.

Class D will have 6 teams after Fort Ann and Fort Edward chose to sit out.

On the men's side, Chatham will skip the Class B tournament. Hadley-Luzerne, Warrensburg, Mayfield, Berlin-New Lebanon, OESJ, Galway, & Argyle will skip the Class C tournament, leaving a 15 team field. Everyone else remains intact.
====================================================
Justice Shoats led 5 players in double figures with 20 points as Siena dismissed Sacred Heart, 93-75, on Sunday. The Saints return to MVP Arena on Friday.
====================================================
Monday's high school scoreboard:

Men's basketball:

Corinth 66, Cambridge-Salem 63.

Lake George 45, Fort Edward 39.

Whitehall 77, Ticonderoga 47.

Hawthorne Valley 54, Schalmont 42.

Green Tech 76, Success Academy 31.

Women's basketball:

Ticonderoga 39, Whitehall 33.

Hockey:

Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 5, Guilderville 1.
====================================================
As a result of the above game, the playoffs are now set.

Today: #9 Bethlehem @ #8 Hawks, 4 pm, Union College.

Wednesday: #10 Guilderville @ #7 Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa, 3:30 pm.

#11 CD Jets @ #6 CBA, 6:15 pm.

Friday: #5 Albany Academy @ #4 Adirondack, 7:40 pm.
Guilderville-Burnt Hills winner @ Shenendehowa, 2:45 pm.
CD Jets-CBA winner @ LaSalle, 7:15 pm. While a venue isn't listed as of press time, assume it'll be Knickerbacker Arena.

Saturday: Queensbury @ Ithaca, 11:45 am.
==================================================
Speaking of LaSalle, Frear Park is closing the Park Pub, which serves as an entrance to the ice arena, so that might've been an underlying factor in the Cadets moving to Knickerbacker Arena, a move that has worked so far for LaSalle, as they've gone 2-0-2 in 4 games. The pub is being remodeled, and will reopen later this year. We think.

News & notes

 Later tonight, weather permitting, the coaches of the Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) will hold their annual meeting to finalize the pairings for the playoffs, which begin Tuesday night with play-in games. Keep in mind that Queensbury is in Division 2, and is not in Division 1 tournament, leaving 11 teams.

Before we get anywhere else, let's take a look at Saturday's scores.

LaSalle 4, Albany Academy 3 (OT). Tim Flanigan's club will be the 3rd seed, finishing 4th overall in the standings. Academy finishes 6th, and will be the #5 seed.

Ithaca 6, Saratoga 4. The Blue Streaks won the regular season title, and thus will be the #1 seed.

Burnt Hills-Ballstan Spa @ Guilderville was postponed, and will be played Monday.

The play-in pairings, with games set for Tuesday & Wednesday. Dates will be decided tonight.

#11 CD Jets @ #6 CBA. Winner plays LaSalle.

#10 Guilderville @ #7 Hawks. Winner plays Shenendehowa.

#9 Bethlehem @ #8 Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa. Winner plays Saratoga.

Albany Academy will play #4 Adirondack in the quarterfinals.

Update, 2/17: Today's game between Burnt Hills & Guilderville could change the seedings for the playoffs. We'll know for sure on Tuesday.

Moving on to basketball:

Women:

Albany Academy 78, LaSalle 38. This game was moved from Friday to Saturday without any real explanation.

Corinth 43, Lake George 32.

Greenwich 72, Mechanicville 34.

Glens Falls 59, Schuylerville 27.

Men:

Hoosick Falls 53, Saratoga Catholic 45.

Albany Academy 76, University Prep (Rochester) 44.
====================================================
The Albany FireWolves can't seem to catch a break in going from the penthouse to the outhouse this season.

Mired in the NLL basement, the 'Wolves were blown out by Ottawa, 18-9, Saturday night. Doesn't look like they're bound for the post-season this year.
======================================================
Siena marked Mental Health Awareness night at UHY Center by beating Sacred Heart, 66-51. Anajah Brown led the Saints with 23 points. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany), after hitting her 200th career 3 pointer in a win on Thursday, was held to 4 points.

The game marked a homecoming for Amelia Wood (Averill Park), who finished with 8 points.
======================================================
Meanwhile, Siena's women's lacrosse team went across the river to Troy to play Binghamton on Saturday, and dropped an 8-6 decision to the Bearcats. I believe Renwyck Field is on the RPI campus.

Troy High sports review through February 15

 Let's just jump right into it.

Bowling:

Troy finished 13th in the Class A sectionals at Boulevard Bowl, which would be normal, regardless of what league they play in. Congratulations to coach Don Poutre and his team on an outstanding 1st season in the Colonial Council.

Men's swimming:

Troy/CBA/Columbia finished 2nd behind Shenendehowa in the 3 day tournament that ended earlier today. Now, let's hope Troy's Rocco Jabour has some company in the form of other Troy swimmers next season.

Women's basketball:

Final regular season record: 14-6 (9-5 Colonial Council).

Troy has a week at least to prep for sectionals, as seedings will be announced on Friday. Will Harris' club is on a tear, having won 4 in a row, and 10 of 11, heading into the post-season, after beating Mohonasen on Friday.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 14-5 (10-2 Colonial Council).

After sweeping Cohoes & Mohonasen this week, Jamil Hood's squad will host Schenectady on Tuesday to close the regular season. Men's sectional pairings will be announced on Wednesday.

The sports review will return in April to cover lacrosse, baseball, and softball.

News & notes

 I can't stress this enough to start. Please check with your schools to see if their games will still go on tonight, with a winter storm arriving the tri-cities beginning around 1 pm. I realize that we're near the end of the regular season in hockey & basketball, and any games cancelled today might not be made up.
=========================================================
Friday's high school scoreboard:

Women's basketball:

Ichabod Crane 61, Ravena 50.

===============================================
Maybe Siena should've done a Valentine's Day promotion for Friday's game vs. Marist at MVP Arena.

Less than 5,000 fans filled the arena, only to go home disappointed, as Marist toppled the Saints, 65-64. Gavin Doty led Siena with 20 points, while Justice Shoats & Major Freeman added 16 each. Weather permitting, the Saints will head to Connecticut to play Sacred Heart on Sunday before returning to MVP Arena next Friday to play Niagara.

CBA 60, Shenendehowa 44. The season finale of WNYA's game of the week was a doozy.

Thursday, February 13, 2025

News & notes

 RPI grad Matt Patricia is following his former boss, Bill Belichick, into the college coaching ranks, but not at North Carolina.

Patricia is signing on as a defensive assistant at Ohio State, which won the national championship last month.

Best of luck to Matt as he takes the next step in his career.
===============================================
A gentle reminder that the season finale of WNYA's basketball game of the week is tonight instead of tomorrow because of Siena basketball. CBA meets Shenendehowa, with a tip time of approximately 7:05 pm.

For what it's worth, LaSalle principal Steve Sgambelluri, who has been off the last two weeks from television, may have other issues to deal with on campus.

According to the Albany Times-Union, LaSalle has had to restrict attendance at McCormick Hall due to recent outbreaks of violence in the stands and in the parking lot. Only the families of players & coaches will be admitted for remaining games this season. The Cadets won the men's Colonial Council title last week with a sweep of Catholic Central.
===============================================
CBA football standout Jake Marra will play his college ball at UAlbany, starting next season. Marra had met with defensive coordinator Bill Nesselt, who might be the next head coach after Greg Gattuso departed last week for Penn State.
================================================
Bethlehem grad Clare Hutton will be on the US Women's National Soccer Team for the SheBelieves Cup, which starts next week in Houston vs. Colombia. Hutton, 19, had recently finished her rookie season with the Kansas City Current of the National Women's Soccer League.
==================================================
The Basketball League's 2025 season doesn't start for another month, but the expansion NY Phoenix are already building a rivalry with the Albany Patroons.

First, the Phoenix signed Trevis Wyche away from Albany to be their first head coach. Recently, the team signed Shadell Millinghaus away from the Pats. Millinghaus split his high school days between Schenectady & Troy.

Now, let's see how the rest of the media plays it up......

News & notes

 The next time Darius Prince sets foot on the arena football field at MVP Arena, it'll be as a visiting player.

Prince, a free agent, signed with Corpus Christi, and there are some issues as to what broke down between Prince and the Albany Firebirds. Seems the negotiations between the team and Prince got a little too personal for Prince's liking.
==========================================
Lansingburgh won the Class B men's bowling title on Tuesday at Boulevard Bowl. LaSalle finished 13th, but will send Zach Bombard & Raffaele Lombardi to state competition. Bombard finsihed second in individual competition behind 'Burgh's John Lynch.

Troy High sports review, through February 8

 This is the final full week of regular season action in basketball. Sectionals in swimming & bowling come later this week.

Bowling:

Troy finished 4th in the Colonial Council championships one week ago at Boulevard Bowl. We haven't heard if any Troy kegler has qualified for sectionals which will be right back at Boulevard today (men) & Wednesday (women).

Women's basketball:

Current record: 12-6 (7-5 Colonial Council).

Will Harris' squad dusted themselves off after the loss to Albany Academy to beat Voorheesville & Cohoes last week. The Lady Horses have won 8 of 9, and are building momentum heading toward the sectionals next week.

Up next: Senior night vs. Lansingburgh on Tuesday, then the season finale at Mohonasen on Friday.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 12-5 (8-2 Colonial Council).

The Horses came out anxious, if not also flat, vs. Voorheesville, but righted the ship in completing a season sweep of Lansingburgh on Saturday night.

Up next: Cohoes comes in Wednesday to kick off a season ending 3 game homestand. Then, it's Mohonasen on Friday, with Senior night on February 18 vs. Schenectady.

High School Fridays: Working overtime (Bethlehem @ Shenendehowa, 2/7/25)

 This week's My4 game of the week has Bethlehem, winners of 4 in a row, facing Shenendehowa. Leah Bowers joins Rodger Wyland at the desk this week.

I wonder if that non-call, late in the 4th quarter, gets called if the game was at Bethlehem. It gave Shen the momentum to take the game into overtime, and, eventually win in double overtime.

Meanwhile, Troy completed a season sweep of Cohoes on the road, 59-46, their 8th win in their last 9 games.

News & notes

 Beginning next year, the NYSPHSAA wrestling championships will return to MVP Arena in Albany. The venue was awarded the state tournament for a 3 year period beginning in 2026.

The last time the state championships were at the-then Times Union Center, some of the competition aired on local television. Hmmmmm.
===============================================
Former UAlbany defensive lineman Jared Verse, who was drafted out of Florida State last spring, was named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year at Thursday's NFL Honors event, broadcast on NFL Network.
===============================================
Seeing how flag football for women has been a success at the high school level, Russell Sage College is adding the sport to their lineup, beginning next year. The Gators will be one of 5 Empire 8 teams taking part in the sport. However, given how poorly high school flag football's been covered the last two years, this will run into the same problems of media coverage.

Stay tuned.
================================================

At MVP Arena, Siena's men downed St. Peter's, 77-63. Major Freeman had a career & game high 28 points to pace the Saints.

News & notes

 UAlbany is looking for a new head football coach.

Greg Gattuso is leaving Albany after 11 seasons to return to his alma mater, Penn State, as a defensive assistant under head coach James Franklin. This was a big enough deal to merit front page headlines in the morning papers today.

After reaching the FCS semifinals 14 months ago, the Great Danes tumbled out of the penthouse and almost back to rock bottom in 2024. Gattuso succeeded the legendary Bob Ford, for whom the field at Casey Stadium is named, in 2014.

Most schools in the 518, if not all of them, are closed today due to weather. We should be seeing some games being postponed or outright cancelled before the day is over. Check with your schools via e-mail to see if your school's games will be played.

News & notes

 It's been a week since Kevin Huerter had his high school number retired by Shenendehowa.

Today, Kevin is preparing for his first game as a member of the Chicago Bulls after being traded by Sacramento over the weekend in a deal that saw DeAron Fox sent to San Antonio. Maybe now, just in time for the NBA's stretch run, Huerter can get some quality minutes. Maybe.

Due to Siena basketball on February 14, the season finale of the WNYA high school game of the week shifts to Thursday on February 13, as Shen & CBA will meet.

If you're like me, and you watch the Albany Firebirds online during the season, the team has signed with Evergreen Now as their new online provider. The games could still air on YouTube starting next month, but we'll see.

Troy High sports review, through February 1

 Two weeks remain in the regular season for basketball. Sectionals are right around the corner.

Men's swimming & diving:

Final regular season record: 8-0.

All that's left, after defeating Shaker on Thursday, is if the lone Troy swimmer, Rocco Jabour, qualifies for sectionals later this month.

Bowling:

Final regular season record: 8-6 (8-5 Colonial Council).

Troy completed season sweeps of Voorheesville and Ravena this past week, ending a 3 match losing streak.

Next: Boulevard Bowl hosts the Colonial Council championships on Monday.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 10-6 (5-5 Colonial Council).

We discussed the Lady Horses' loss to Albany Academy previously, ending a 6 game winning streak.

Next: Voorheesville makes its first visit to Zotto Gym on Tuesday, and, then, it's a return match with Cohoes on Friday.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 11-4 (7-1 Colonial Council).

Jamil Hood's club has come down to earth with 2 straight losses. Shenendehowa swept the Horses on Saturday, 61-50, but the losing will soon end.

Next: 1st trip to Voorheesville on Tuesday. Then, Cohoes comes in on Thursday, and a rematch with Lansingburgh at MVP Arena on Saturday.
