Mohonasen 3, Troy 1.
Foothills Council:
Western Athletic Conference:
We're halfway through the fall sports season, and Troy High is enjoying its 1st season in the Colonial Council. This time, we're going to take a deep dive at football before moving on to other sports.
Current record: 2-2 (0-2 Capital Division).
Troy's offense has stalled the last two weeks, held to 20 total points vs. Bethlehem & Columbia. However, there is hope.
That's because LaSalle, their next opponent, and their last road opponent, has lost three in a row, and are also 0-2 in divisional play. The Collar City Cup will be on the line at LaSalle on Friday, with a chance for Troy to snap a 3 game losing streak against the Cadets. In all, Troy's 4 remaining opponents have a combined 6-10 record this season. No one saw that coming. After LaSalle, it's......
South Glens Falls: 1-3.
Amsterdam: 1-3 (1-1 division).
Averill Park: 2-2 (1-1 division).
Of the 4 remaining games, 2 are winnable, although if LaSalle can't shake its doldrums, Troy could take back the cup.
As for the rest:
Cross country track remains winless as a team, and the only winless squad at THS.
Volleyball:
Current record: 4-4 overall. After starting 0-4, Talia Valenti's group has rebounded to win 4 in a row.
This week: Troy hosts Mohonasen on Tuesday night, and a rematch vs. Albany on Thursday.
Men's soccer:
Current record: 2-5-2. Troy picked up its first league win over Lansingburgh, sandwiched in between losses to Cohoes and Ballston Spa.
This week: Troy visits Mohonasen on Monday, hosts Albany Academy on Wednesday, then goes back on the road to Voorheesville on Friday.
Women's soccer:
Current record: 4-3-1. Jarret Farrell's squad lost to Cohoes on Tuesday, and a Thursday game at Lansingburgh appears to have been rained out, as it has not been reported 3 days later. We're waiting for confirmation.
Update, 10/3: Troy did defeat Lansingburgh. It took nearly a week for it to be posted to the Colonial Council website.
This week: What was to have been 4 games in 5 days is now 3 in 4, as Troy will host Mohonasen on Monday, visit Albany Academy on Wednesday, and host Ichabod Crane on Thursday.
Golf:
Current record: 5-4 after beating Ravena on September 23.
This week: Schalmont returns to Frear Park to play Troy on Monday. Troy also hosts Mohonasen on Wednesday (weather permitting), and Voorheesville on Friday.
Swimming:
Current record: 2-2 after beating Bethlehem on Wednesday, then losing to Niskayuna on Friday.
This week: A road match vs. Schenectady-Colonie, then, the Shenendehowa Invitational on Saturday.
Tennis:
The Lady Horses finally broke into the win column with an upset of Schalmont on September 23.
This week: A road match at Voorheesville is the only one on the schedule, ending a 1 1/2 week layoff.

Albany Academy won the Colonial Council men's golf title Friday, holding off Ichabod Crane by 7 shots. LaSalle & Troy finished 3rd & 4th, respectively. The Riders' Tanner La Torre won the individual competition, with Troy's Joey Degnan finishing 2nd.
Since taking over as varsity football coach at CBA, Bob "The Builder" Burns has gone 5-1 vs. Shenendehowa. If you extend that to his time at Troy High, when Troy was in Class AA, Burns is 7-1 head-to-head vs. Shen coach Brian Clawson. That lone loss came 11 months ago, which CBA avenged in the Class AA Super Bowl.
Tonight's Friday Night Matchup was the latest chapter in this growing rivalry between the two Suburban Council powers. Shen won the toss, and promptly went down the field, culminating when Jake Clawson, the coach's son, hit James Pepper, Jr. for a 32 yard touchdown. With the extra point, Shen took an early 7-0 lead.
CBA promptly answered a couple of minutes later, as Lucius Anderson ran it in from 12 yards out to tie the game. Shen, however, took the lead back, as Dillon May banged it in from the 1 with a shade over a minute left in the quarter. 14-7 Shen after 1.
CBA promptly tied the game as the 2nd quarter began, with Amare Coghill catching a 19 yard touchdown from Archie Jones. After Shen was forced to turn the ball over on downs, Jones found Anderson for a 43 yard TD. The Brothers led, 21-14, at halftime.
On the first play of the 4th quarter, Ihsaan Aloize took a pass from Jake Clawson, and sprinted 55 yards to the house. Unfortunately for Shen, the point after was blocked. Tom Toure added a 9 yard TD run late, and CBA goes to 3-0 with a 40-20 win. Shen falls to 2-2.
CBA will be on Friday Night Matchup again in 2 weeks. Next week, Columbia makes its 2nd appearance, as they'll face Averill Park.

Yep, this is a regular feature for the season.
Volleyball:
Current record, not including tournaments, 2-4 (2-2 Colonial Council). Troy picked up its first wins of the season, defeating Ravena & LaSalle, then defeated Canajoharie-Fort Plain in the Averill Park tournament before falling to Columbia.
This week: Talia Valenti's squad hosts Cohoes on Tuesday, and visits Lansingburgh on Thursday.
Women's swimming & diving:
Current record: 1-1. Troy/Averill Park/Tamarac fell to Saratoga, and will take on Bethlehem this Wednesday, then travel to Niskayuna on Friday.
Women's soccer:
Current record: 4-2-1 overall (2-2-1 Colonial Council). Troy fell to Ravena on Tuesday, but came back to tie LaSalle, then take down Schenectady in a non-league clash on Saturday.
This week: Jarret Farrell's club hosts Cohoes on Tuesday night, then visits Lansingburgh Thursday afternoon.
Men's soccer:
Current record: 1-3-2 overall (0-2-1 Colonial Council). Russ Hines' crew is having the same problems as last year, specifically scoring goals. All three losses (Amsterdam, Schalmont, Averill Park) were via shutout, and the Horses have only tallied 3 goals this season.
This week: Troy is at Coboes on Tuesday night, then hosts Lansingburgh under the lights on Thursday, and a non-league game vs. Ballston Spa on Saturday afternoon.
Golf:
Current record: 4-4. Jack O'Keefe's team saw their 4 match win streak disappear in a loss to LaSalle one week ago, then dropped a match to Ichabod Crane.
This week: Troy visits Sycamore Country Club today for a match vs. Ravena. Even though there are still some league matches remaining, the Colonial Council championships take place Friday at Eagle Creek Country Club.
Football:
Current record: 2-1 after losing to Bethlehem on Friday. Undefeated Columbia will look to spoil Homecoming on Friday night. If everything breaks in Troy's favor, however, they could make the playoffs, as their last road game will be for the Collar City Cup against a suddenly struggling LaSalle (1-2).
Tennis: Devin Robinson's group still is searching for their first win of the season.
This week: The ladies are at Schalmont on Tuesday for their lone match of the week.

We do not have the results of the Averill Park volleyball tournament. We do know Troy defeated Canajoharie-Fort Plain in 3 sets, and lost to Columbia in 2.
If there was any journalistic sense, Spectrum News 1 would've had Troy at Bethlehem as this week's Friday Night Matchup. in the wake of the swatting hoax a week ago, which wiped out the Eagles' original home opener vs. CBA.
Instead, Spectrum decided to send its camera crew to Guilderland, as the Dutchmen hosted undefeated Shaker. The furor over the swatting at Bethlehem had died down, making their game less important.
To the game, then. Shaker won the toss, and elected to take the opening kickoff. The Blue Bison marched down the field, culminating with Marcus Snipes, Jr. scoring his first rushing touchdown of the season. However, the PAT failed, and Shaker led, 6-0, after the first quarter.
The quarter ended with Guilderland driving, and Travis Berschwinger matched Snipes with a 1 yard run of his own. However, an improvised 2 point conversion attempt failed, and the score was tied just under 3 minutes into the 2nd quarter.
It was all Shaker after that. Mark Royce scored his 1st touchdown of the season from 7 yards out. Jake Smith added the extra point, and, for all intents & purposes, that was the game winner. A little more than a minute later, after a Dutchmen turnover, Smith ran it in from 20 yards out. Guilderland's next possession ended with a 3 & out. However, the subsequent punt was fielded by Smith just before midfield, and the sprinted down the sideline, 51 yards in all, to extend Shaker's lead. The Bison went into the break up 27-6.
Next week's Friday Night Matchup sees Shenendehowa vs. CBA.
Other action: Bethlehem earned a cathartic, emotional 27-8 win over Troy, squaring their record at 1-1. Troy falls to 2-1, and will have Homecoming next week. That's the good news. The bad is that undefeated Columbia comes to town after beating LaSalle, 28-12. The Cadets drop to 1-2, while Columbia, like Shaker, is 3-0.

The 518 has always had prospects developing in boxing, from Mike Tyson to Abraham Nova.
The latest prospect, it seems, is Albany High sophomore Nya Almodovar, who was profiled today in the Albany Times-Union. The 16 year old won the 114 pound novice title at the USA Women's Boxing Championships in Louisiana last month. Next up for Almodovar is the Silver Gloves states in Rochester, coming up in December.
Former Siena women's lacrosse coach Abby Rehfuss was released by Syracuse Monday after 1 season as an assistant lacrosse coach under Niskayuna native Kayla Treanor. Rehfuss (Shaker) had been the head coach at Siena for 6 seasons before leaving for Syracuse.

With the exception of women's tennis and volleyball, Troy High's fall sports teams are moving in the right direction after 2 weeks.
The school relaunched its own weekly recap on their website, and the lack of listing for volleyball and tennis tells us neither team has picked up a win just yet.
Women's soccer:
Overall record: 3-1 (2-1 Colonial Council): 1st year coach Jarret Farrell may indeed be the savior of the program. Troy has won 2 in a row after defeating Catholic Central Thursday, and taking a non-league game over Hoosic Valley Saturday.
This week:
Tuesday: The Lady Horses will be under the lights at Picken Field vs. Ravena.
Thursday: The 1st ever women's soccer meeting vs. LaSalle.
Saturday: Non-league game vs. former foe Schenectady at 1 pm.
Men's soccer:
Overall record: 1-2 (0-1 Colonial Council): Russ Hines' club finally broke into the win column Thursday in beating South Glens Falls.
This week:
Tuesday: @ Ravena.
Thursday: LaSalle.
Saturday: Non-league game vs. Averill Park.
Golf:
Overall record: 4-2. Jack O'Keefe's duffers have won 4 straight after starting the season 0-2. Senior Joey Degnan may have set the record for the fastest qualifier for next month's sectionals.
This week:
Today: LaSalle.
Tuesday: @ Ichabod Crane.
Women's swimming & diving (unified team with Tamarac & Averill Park):
Record: 1-0. Coach Emily Caboot's team got off to a quick start, beating Shaker. Next up is a road trip to Saratoga. Swimming & diving is one of the few sports where Troy will see their old foes from the Suburban Council, as well as Colonial Council opponents.
Tennis:
Winless so far, the Lady Horses host city rival Emma Willard (Wasaren League) this afternoon, then travel to face Ichabod Crane on Wednesday, before Albany Academy makes its first appearance on the Troy court on Friday. We should note that tennis results have been very sparse in the local papers.
Volleyball:
Same thing. Not many scores have been reported. It's not confirmed, but it would appear as though Friday's non-league tilt vs. Averill Park might've been cancelled, as it was taken off AP's Aktivate schedule. The results of Saturday's Lansingburgh tournament were not reported.
This week:
Tuesday: Ravena.
Thursday: @ LaSalle. First ever meeting in volleyball.
Saturday: Another tournament, this time at Averill Park. This will stream on Hudl.
Football:
Seems the addition of former Watervliet coach Ryan Job has been a difference maker for Troy, which is 2-0. Next up is, possibly, Bethlehem, which has not yet announced if Friday's game will be played. Otherwise, Homecoming is coming sooner than I thought, as it'll be September 27 vs. red hot Columbia, also 2-0 after upsetting Ravena and Burnt Hills. Can Jordan Canzeri, along with Job, take Troy to the playoffs? Maybe. I'm looking at possibly a 5-3 ledger (4-3 if the Bethlehem game is cancelled), with the problem spots being Columbia, LaSalle, and Averill Park.
