News & notes

Queensbury has taken its first step toward a state title in hockey after shutting out Saranac, 7-0, on Friday. The Spartans now await the winner of today's game between Rye & Ogdensburg Free Academy, with Queensbury returning to action next Saturday.

Shenendehowa will play Canton later this afternoon.
===============================================
RPI's hockey season is over, as the Engineers were eliminated by Harvard in the 1st round of the ECAC playoffs, 5-2. RPI's women were dismissed two weeks ago in similar fashion.

There's always next year, of course.
=================================================
The last of the Section II basketball finals are now set after Friday's women's semi-finals in Class AAA.

Colonie defeated Albany 56-41, and will play Shaker, which needed overtime to dismiss Shenendehowa, 59-56.
=================================================
Now, on to the finals. 12 games over 3 days. Hudson Valley Community College will be rocking. Ladies first, then the men.

Women's Class D: Northville vs. Saratoga Catholic, 11 am.

Jim Zullo may be building another dynasty, after he'd developed one at Shen for so many years. Saratoga Catholic was one of the top teams in the Wasaren League this year, but Northville, at 19-2, may be too much to overcome.

Pick: Northville.

Women's Class A: Albany Academy vs. Broadalbin-Perth, 12:45 pm (approximate).

Broadalbin-Perth emerged as a surprise contender in the Foothills Council this season, but that 20-1 record is nothing to sneeze at. Academy (18-4) plays in the Colonial Council, and was jockeying for position with Holy Names & Catholic Central all season. That could help or hinder the Bears, depending on how the game starts.

Pick: Albany Academy.

Women's Class C: Stillwater vs. Greenwich, 2:30 pm (approximate).

Two Wasaren League rivals collide, as the Witches look to complete an undefeated season. Greenwich swept the season series between these two teams, who last met on January 23. The outcome will be the same today.

Pick: Greenwich.

Women's Class B: Voorheesville vs. Mechanicville, 4:15 pm (approximate).

Colonial Council vs. Wasaren League.

The Blackbirds landed the #1 seed in this bracket, despite the fact that they had lost to a couple of AA teams in Catholic Central and Troy, for starters. If there was ever a need for an upset today, this is it.

Pick: Mechanicville.

Women's Class AA: Columbia vs. Catholic Central, Monday at 6 pm.

The Lady Devils did everyone a favor and ended the Organ Dynasty at Averill Park on Thursday night. Catholic Central, which won the A title last year, looks to follow AP's lead, and win the AA title. This could go down to the wire, unless the Crusaders race out to a big lead early, forcing Columbia to change strategy. CCHS not only has to keep an eye on Alivia Landy, but Sarah Rainville as well. Shut them both down, and their goal is accomplished.

Pick: Catholic Central.

Women's Class AAA: Shaker vs. Colonie, Monday at 7:45 pm (approximate).

Rematch of last year's final. Section II really needs to bolster Class AAA, which has just 7 teams, all in the Suburban Council (Schenectady declined to participate), otherwise this will get boring in a hurry.

Pick: Colonie.

Men's Class B: Greenville vs. Mechanicville, 6:30 pm (approximate).

Wasaren League vs. Patroon Conference. They would be dancing all night in Greene County if Greeenville pulls it off, and upsets second seeded Mechanicville. It ain't happening.

Pick: Mechanicville.

Men's Class A: Glens Falls vs. Catholic Central, 8:15 pm (approximate).

After dropping 100+ on Hudson earlier this week, the Black Bears are looking hungry to dethrone the Crusaders. Kellen Driscoll could be the next Joe Girard III in the eyes of North Country fans, but he could also end up another Jimmer Fredette. The Roberson brothers power the offense for Guy DiBacco and the Crusaders, but it won't be enough this time.

Pick: Glens Falls.

Men's Class D: Germantown vs. Loudonville Christian, Sunday at 11 am.

The Eagles are the defending Class D champions, and an independent, not tied to any league, which works for them immensely. Until this season, Germantown had largely been a doormat in the Patroon Conference. The difference is clear.

Pick: Loudonville Christian.

Men's Class C: Duanesburg vs. Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Sunday at 12:45 pm (approximate).

Jeff Mulhern is the only superstar player left at Duanesburg, and he'll need to have his supporting cast ready to fend off an upset bid from BKW.

Pick: Duanesburg.

Men's Class AA: Troy vs. Niskayuna, Sunday at 2:30 pm (approximate).

Consider this. Over the last 13 years, Troy has won 4 sectional titles. Class AA in 2013 and 2016 under Rich Hurley, Class A in 2019 (Greg Davis) and 2023 (John Killian). To give Jamil Hood the title, Troy has to neutralize Nisky's Daniel Smalls. Easier said than done, but, then again, consider, too, Troy's record vs. the Suburban Council this year. Troy swept Columbia & Schenectady while losing in turn to Bethlehem & Shen, the latter twice. If Nisky can't contain Stetson Merritt, they're in trouble, and this being a de facto home game for Troy, with the Purple Army in the house, loud & boisterous, it's going to be a long day for Nisky.

Pick: Troy.

Men's Class AAA: Green Tech vs. Shaker, Sunday at 4:15 (approximate).

The Soaring Eagles are the defending champions, looking for their 4th straight title, 2nd in AAA. With their original mentor, Hood, in atttendance, that may be extra motivation. Like Loudonville Christian, Green Tech is an independent. We won't be surprised if at least a couple of their alumni, particularly Jamil Hood, Jr. and Derrick Rowland, Jr., may be on hand, too. GT in AAA keeps this from being the Suburban Invitational, like it is on the women's side, and we need more teams in the division here, too.

Pick: Green Tech.

Of course, I could be wrong.

Thursday's college & high school scoreboard, 3/6

There will be a new champion in women's Class AA this year in basketball.

Columbia saw to that in ending Averill Park's string of sectional titles Thursday at Hudson Valley Community College by beating Sean Organ's club, 65-43. The future Golden Knights (AP will adopt the nickname officially in September) had proven to be vulnerable this season, and injuries to key players during the regular season proved costly at the end. Pretty sure we're going to be reading about the AP ladies crying after the loss, but they have nothing to be ashamed of.

The Lady Devils won't get a rematch of last year's semi-final vs. Bethlehem, however, after Colonial Council champion Catholic Central took down the Eagles, 62-47. Audra DiBacco's squad moved up from Class A, where they were the champions last year, and Monday's final at HVCC should be a good one.

On the men's side, it will also be Colonial Council vs. Suburban Council in Class AA, after Troy avenged a January loss to LaSalle by eliminating the Cadets, 62-60. Following are post-game comments from Troy stars Stetson Merritt and Kayne Behan.....

It will be a de-facto home game for Troy on Sunday, as they'll play Niskayuna for the title. HVCC will be rocking again, you can count on it.

Also Thursday:

Class AAA semi-finals:

Green Tech 53, CBA 52.

Shaker 55, Colonie 36.

The Eagles & Bison will meet Sunday at 4:15 pm at HVCC, but they may have a tough act to follow if Troy-Nisky (2:30 pm) is as we think it'll be.

Colleges:

Women's basketball:

America East quarter-finals:

UAlbany 66, New Hampshire 44. Lilly Phillips led 4 Lady Danes in double figures with 15 points. Meghan Huerter added 14, AE Player of The Year Kayla Cooper contributed 12, and Kaci Donovan had 11. Albany is idle until the semi-finals on Monday vs. Maine.

Fairfield 62, Siena 49. Ahniysha Jackson led Siena with 20 points in the loss. The Lady Saints will celebrate Senior Day Saturday vs. Manhattan (2 pm WVCR).

Men's basketball:

Meanwhile, the Siena men had Senior Night at MVP Arena, and celebrated at Fairfield's expense, 68-64. Siena visits Manhattan tomorrow (2 pm, JAMZ 96.3).

News & notes

Colonie High is mourning the passing of junior John Verbo, 16, who was on the Wolfpack's men's volleyball team.

Verbo was in Boston with a travel team, the Capital Sliders, based in Clifton Park, for a tournament last month when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Four days later, Verbo passed away at Tufts Medical Center.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by a parent of one of Verbo's Capital Sliders teammates to help defray funeral costs. The funeral is set for Saturday in Colonie.

News & notes

Albany Broadcasting, at least via WROW, has launched a contest where listeners can get in on the "March Madness" of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Registration has already started, with John Tesh's "Roundball Rock" playing in the background during radio ads. Sounds like Bill Williams or Chad O'Hara may be doing the promo.

The tournament starts in 2 weeks.

Section II championship week preview

Championship week in Section II actually started last night with Shenendehowa repeating as hockey champions in clipping Saratoga, 4-3.

The focus now is on basketball, as the focus will be on Hudson Valley Community College (women) and Cool Insuring Arena (men) over the next 8 days, starting tonight. As ye scribe found out last year, they won't take cash for tickets at these venues. 21st century technology, yo'.

Women's basketball:

Tonight:

Class A semi-finals:

6 pm: Broadalbin-Perth vs. Scotia-Glenville.

Two Foothills Council schools have at it. The Lady Patriots have had a sensational season, and it continues tonight against the Tartans. I can't see them losing here.

7:30 pm: Academy of Holy Names vs. Albany Academy.

Next, it's two of the Colonial Council's best. The two teams jockeyed for position behind eventual league champion Catholic Central all season, and this will go to the wire.

The picks: Going with Albany Academy and Broadalbin-Perth to advance to Saturday's final.

Tuesday:

Class C semi-finals:

6 pm: Stillwater vs. Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

Western Athletic Conference vs. Wasaren League in the Tuesday opener. Whichever team jumps out to an early lead will punch their ticket back to HVCC for Saturday's final.

7:30 pm: Greenwich vs. Maple Hill.

Wasaren League vs. Patroon Conference this time. Maple Hill has had an up-&-down year, but the same cannot be said for Greenwich.

The picks: An all Wasaren League final with Greenwich vs. Stillwater.

Wednesday:

Class B semi-finals:

6 pm: Tamarac vs. Mechanicville.

Two more Wasaren teams meet to fill a spot for Saturday. Unfortunately, I've a feeling this one's going to be over early.

7:30 pm: Voorheesville vs. Coxsackie-Athens.

Colonial Council vs. Patroon Conference. One big blemish on the Blackbirds' ledger is a February loss to Troy, where a win would've vaulted them up in the standings. Should be an entertaining game.

The picks: Mechanicville & Voorheesville to meet Saturday.

Thursday:

Class AA semi-finals:

6 pm: Bethlehem vs. Catholic Central.

The Lady Crusaders won the A title last year, and moved up in class. Bethlehem was a finalist last year. Job 1 for Bethlehem is to slow down the Crusaders' offense, then pick apart the defense to free Kaitlyn Robbins to work inside. Not as easy as it seems.

7:30: Columbia vs. Averill Park.

Sean Organ's club has not dominated like they have in past years, and the free ride comes to an end here. Columbia reminded everyone that they're not a 1-woman team vs. Troy. Alivia Landy was held to 7 points on Friday, and Sarah Rainville picked up the slack, leading all scorers with 28 points. She won't have it so easy this time, as it'll be Landy's night to shine.

The picks: Columbia & Bethlehem (in an upset) set up a rematch of last year's semi-final.

Friday:

Class AAA semi-finals:

6 pm: Colonie vs. Albany.

Like Averill Park, Albany was not its usual self for much of the season, but they've rounded into form. Colonie, likewise, is peaking at the right time. If there was a game destined for overtime, this is it.

7:30 pm: Shaker vs. Shenendehowa.

These old rivals meet again, but the Lady Bison are the top seeds, suggesting a possible changing of the guard in the Suburban Council. And there is one.

The picks: Looking at Colonie vs. Shaker next Monday.

Saturday:

Class D final:

11 am: Northville vs. Saratoga Catholic.

Jim Zullo came out of retirement to lead Northville to a Section II title last year. The Lady Saints have had a solid year in the Wasaren League. Should be a hot opener.

Pick: Northville.

The rest of the finals will be previewed on Saturday.

Men's basketball:

Tonight:

Class B semi-finals:

Hoosick Falls vs. Greenville.

Wasaren vs. Patroon. Both teams having a solid year, but only one punches their ticket to HVCC for next Sunday's final.

Mechanicville vs. Voorheesville (Tuesday, 8 pm).

Wasaren vs. Colonial in the nightcap. Voorheesville shocked some folks upsetting Troy last month, but that only galvanized the Flying Horses, whom we'll get to shortly. Tbat win was the peak of the Blackbirds' season.

The picks: Greenville vs. Mechanicville in the finals.

Class C semi-finals:

Berne-Knox-Westerlo vs. North Warren.

North Warren represents the Adirondack League, and they've been on a tear of late. That's all that needs be said.

Duanesburg vs. Saratoga Catholic.

Jeffrey Mulhern is Duanesburg's leading scorer, and could end up taking home sectional gold. I don't like the Saints' chances here.

The picks: Duanesburg vs. North Warren in the final on Sunday.

Tuesday:

Class D semi-finals:

Loudonville Christian vs. Hartford.

The Eagles are the defending champions, and an independent. I don't see Hartford doing anything to merit an upset.

Hawthorne Valley vs. Germantown.

So little is written up about Class D schools to start with, so I shan't be surprised if there's too many empty seats as the game starts.

The picks: Loudonville Christian vs. Hawthorne Valley in the finals.

Wednesday:

Class AA semi-final:

Niskayuna vs. Bethlehem.

Daniel Smalls has been the featured star for Nisky this season. I've seen him on TV twice this season (thanks, WNYA), and he is the real deal. Bethlehem will put up a fight, but there won't be another upset here.

Class A semi-finals:

Catholic Central vs. Hudson Falls.

The defending champions will have a rough road once they get through this game. Hudson Falls has surprised some folks this year in the Foothills Council.

Glens Falls vs. Hudson.

RPI-bound Kellen Driscoll leads the Black Bears in a quest to repeat, although Glens Falls won the B title last year.

The picks: Glens Falls vs. Catholic Central in Sunday's final.

Thursday:

Class AA semi-final:

Troy vs. LaSalle.

The Cadets escaped Zotto Gym with a 4 point win in January. Troy has won 5 in a row, and this one should be more of the same, maybe even going to overtime. Whomever comes out of this gets a de facto home game in the finals.

AA picks: Niskayuna vs. Troy in Sunday's final.

Class AAA semi-finals:

CBA vs. Green Tech.

12 years ago, the Eagles, then coached by current Troy coach Jamil Hood, upset CBA, spoiling the Brothers' chance for a repeat, then beat CBA for the AA title the next year. Green Tech is looking for their 4th straight sectional title.

Shaker vs. Colonie.

Greg Davis' Wolfpack were finalists last year, losing to Green Tech, but may have some momentum after upsetting Shen on Sunday. Unfortunately, Shaker may in fact be the better team.

The picks: Green Tech vs. Shaker on Sunday.

We'll preview the finals on Saturday.

Of course, I could be wrong.
