518 alumni update: The Albany Times-Union has brought fans up to speed on some 518 alumni in pro ball, mostly in the minors.

We previously reported that Atlanta has sent Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) to their Triple A farm in Gwinnett to start the season, but depending on the severity of a hamstring injury opening day starter Max Fried suffered Thursday in a win over Washington, the Braves may be forced to bring Anderson up sooner than they'd like. We'll just have to wait & see.

Meanwhile:

Pitcher Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) was cut by Toronto during the preseason, then signed by Houston, and will open the season in Triple A at Sugar Land. He may get to see some familiar faces in the minors.

Infielder Kevin Smith (Columbia) was sent to Las Vegas by Oakland, and catcher Brian O'Keefe (Colonie) will open the season at Tacoma, Seattle's top farm team.

Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro (Bethlehem) lost his debut Thursday, as Minnesota shut out the Royals, 2-0.

Pitcher Jake Fishman, a recent graduate of Union College, left Miami as a free agent during the off-season, and signed a minor-league deal with Oakland. He could end up in Las Vegas with Smith, according to the article in today's paper.

George Washington pitcher Anthony Germinerio (Averill Park/UAlbany) has appeared in 2 games this season with a 3.38 ERA over a total of 5 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and 4 walks with 6 strikeouts. He could see action today at Dayton. The game can be streamed on ESPN+, beginning at 3 pm.

News & notes

 When the Albany Patroons take the court tomorrow for a non-league exhibition, an old friend with ties to Section II will be in the lineup.

Shadell Millinghaus spent part of his high school career with Schenectady and Troy before moving on to a prep school. He was part of the 2019 Patroons team that won the championship in The Basketball League, and now he's reunited with coach Derrick Rowland, Sr., just in time for Friday's game vs. the London Lightning from Canada.

Albany has won 8 in a row since losing their opener. Millinghaus is an example of the rich getting richer, and that's bad news for the rest of the TBL.
===============================================
Albany Academy grad Andre Jackson and UConn will headline Saturday's Final Four double-dip, as the Huskies will face Miami on TBS. The game will air in primetime, and likely end somewhere in the neighborhood of 11:30-midnight.

News & notes

 The season opener in women's lacrosse between Niskayuna and Guilderland, played at Schenectady because the turf field at Niskayuna is being renovated, was delayed for several minutes in the 1st half Tuesday when Schenectady went into lockdown due to an armed man in the area, whom police later apprehended.

Niskayuna won the game, 10-7.
===========================================
There will be no Federation title in Section II this year.

Albany Academy lost the Class A final Sunday to Monsignor Farrell, 55-51, at Guilderland. You tend to forget that while the Academy women play in the Colonial Council, the men play more of an independent schedule in basketball.
===========================================
Due to a scheduling conflict, Troy High's non-league varsity softball game vs. Glens Falls, set for tomorrow, has been delayed four weeks to April 27. We have to assume it's a scheduling conflict, because the weather calls for rain late Friday, and no precipitation is in the forecast for Thursday.

In other Troy High news, the school has cancelled its entire junior varsity lacrosse schedule, as they don't have enough players to fill a JV roster. We've noted previously that the Flying Horses are taking on more of an independent schedule, with some Suburban Council games mixed in, a la soccer in the fall, in the hope of improving their record. They are forging ahead, however, with a modified schedule for middle school players (grades 7 & 8) as of now.

News & notes

 The Albany Firewolves would probably be satisfied if the season ended in the next month.

The 'Wolves dropped their 9th straight, 11-9, to Toronto on Saturday at MVP Arena. After arriving in the league with so much promise, the 'Wolves have turned into a league doormat. The last indoor lacrosse team in town, the Attack, lasted three seasons before folding. Let's hope the same does not happen to the 'Wolves.
============================================
LaSalle graduate Zach Remillard may be a step closer to the big leagues with the Chicago White Sox.

Remillard, who played in Double-A at Birmingham last year, hit two homers to lead the ChiSox past Cincinnati, 9-2, Saturday night in a preseason game in Goodyear, Arizoa. You might get to see the game on MLB Network this morning before live coverage begins.

Anyway, check the video:

I think Remillard starts in Triple A this year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the call sometime this season to Chicago.
===========================================
As bad as the Firewolves have played, the Albany Patroons are trending in the opposite direction.

The Pats won their 7th straight, blowing out Academie Alma, 120-80. Montreal is in town today for a 3 pm matinee, and, like Academie Alma, looking for revenge after the Pats beat them in Canada two weeks ago.
===========================================
UConn has reached the final four after knocking out Gonzage, 82-54, on Saturday night. Andre Jackson (Albany Academy) had 8 points in 31 minutes for the Huskies. The Huskies will learn who their opponent is after play today.
============================================
Speaking of Albany Academy, the Cadets play a mostly independent schedule in Section II, unlike the women's team, which won their first sectional title earlier this month. The men have reached the Class A finals of the Federation tournament, which this year is being contested at various Section II schools, including Guilderland and Shaker. Final round match is today.

News & notes

 UAlbany was supposed to play UMBC at Joe Bruno Stadium on Friday. However, the forecast for today called for what was originally a post-season winter mix of rain & snow, so the game was moved across the river to UAlbany's campus field, as part of a doubleheader, with today's game being played on Friday as well.

The Retrievers said, thank you very much, and swept the Great Danes, 10-8 and 14-7. UAlbany should have the tarp on the field today with the rain (no snow) for tomorrow's series finale.

Similarly, RPI moved today's game vs. Skidmore to Friday as well, and the Engineers ended up getting swept by the Thoroughbreds, 11-4 & 13-7.

Siena was blanked by Fairfield, 11-0, and will play a doubleheader tomorrow.
===========================================
Troy High opened its 2023 softball season in grand style Friday, blowing out Catholic Central, 12-0, in 5 innings, as the mercy rule took effect.

Senior ace Olivia DeCitise twirled a no-hitter, fanning 9. The Lady Horses will be right back at home Thursday---weather permitting, naturally----in another non-league game, this time vs. Glens Falls, scheduled for a 5 pm start.
=========================================
We're finding out what may be the root cause of Brett Young's struggles at George Washington.

Turns out that Brett has been dealing with a back injury, and that is why he was back on the bench this week after playing a couple of games last week. The Colonials are currently playing Manhattan as we write, with a doubleheader set for tomorrow after Friday's game was rained out. Once he's cleared to play, maybe Brett can finally end the slump he's been in.

Other 518 alumni news: The basketball season is over at Rhode Island, as they were eliminated from the Women's NIT Thursday in a loss to Harvard. Sophie Phillips (Cambridge) led all scorers with 20 points. Dolly Cairns (Saratoga) was held scoreless in 15 minutes.

Andre Jackson and UConn will be on the court tonight vs. Gonzaga, vying for a spot in next week's Final Four after crushing Arkansas on Thursday. However, the team bus was broken into, and a number of items were stolen. Now, what kind of pathetic losers would raid a college basketball team's bus? People looking for something to sell for quick cash. The best catharsis for the Huskies, of course, is winning it all come April 3.

Thursday, March 23, 2023

News & notes

 With rain in the forecast today, any early season softball games in Section II will likely be postponed today and/or tomorrow. Check with your schools.
======================================
The struggles of George Washington University's baseball team continued on Wednesday, dropping a 9-6 decision to Maryland out of the Big 10. Neither Brett Young nor Anthony Germinerio played in the game. Young found himself back on the bench after a 0-4 over the weekend as his struggles continue.
======================================
CBA graduate Jordan King may be looking to return to Siena, this time as a graduate transfer.

King, who's spent the last two seasons at East Tennessee State, is looking to return home to finish his college eligibility, according to the Albany Times-Union. He'll likely need a waiver from the NCAA to make the move as a graduate transfer, but it's all but assured he'll have a happy homecoming this winter.
========================================
Sad news to report from the boxing world in relation to the 518.

Dave "Ziggy" Zyglewicz, who once fought the legendary Joe Frazier for the world title, passed away Sunday at 79, one day before his hometown of Watervliet was to rename a street in his honor.

Photo courtesy Albany Times-Union.

After hanging up the gloves, Zyglewicz remained a fixture in Watervliet, where he owned a tavern, Ziggy's Corner. In recent times, Zyglewicz had suffered from stomach cancer & dementia.

Rest in peace.

Wednesday's local college scoreboard:

Baseball:

Army 5, Siena 4 (16 innings).
St. Lawrence swept a doubleheader from Union, 2-1 & 8-5.
RPI 10, MCLA 8.

Men's lacrosse:

College of St. Rose 15, Dominican 6.
SUNY-Cortland 18, Skidmore 10.

Women's lacrosse:

Connecticut 20, UAlbany 12.
Union 19, Smith College 0.

Softball:

UAlbany swept a doubleheader from Siena, 4-1 & 8-4. Curiously, even though the games were on UAlbany's campus, Siena was designated as the home team in both games. Could be that the Saints' own field wasn't available.

Men's tennis:

Oberlin 5, Union 4.

Women's tennis:

Carleton 9, Union 0.

News & notes

 Based on what transpired at MVP Arena Friday & Sunday, arena officials would love to bring the NCAA men's basketball tournament back to Albany within 4 years time.

After Sunday's play, Connecticut and Miami advanced to the Sweet 16. Connecticut opened the action on Sunday night, dispatching St. Mary's, 70-55. The Huskies now will travel to Las Vegas to play Arkansas on Thursday night.

Andre Jackson (Albany Academy), with all the pre-game hype surrounding his return to the 518 on Friday, finished the weekend with just 12 points (10 on Friday, 2 on Sunday). While he is a starter, he is not a featured star for UConn.

Photo courtesy Albany Times-Union.

In the nightcap, Miami took down Indiana, 85-69, to advance to the Sweet 16 Friday vs. Houston.
==================================================
While UAlbany was knocked out of the women's NIT tournament on Friday, another team with ties to the 518 advanced.

Rhode Island downed Boston University, and will play Richmond this afternoon. Dolly Cairns (Saratoga) had 7 points, and Sophie Phillips (Cambridge) had 6 in support of the Lady Rams' leading scorer, Tenin Magassa, who had 12. Today's game will be streaming on ESPN3 at 3 pm.
====================================================
Chalk up another win for the Albany Patroons.

Derrick Rowland, Sr.'s club has now won 6 straight after a season opening loss, dispatching Jamestown, 90-86. Josue Salaam led the Pats with 20 points. On Saturday, Academie Alma, who were swept by the Pats last weekend in Quebec, come to town looking for revenge.
====================================================
Anthony Germinerio (Averill Park/UAlbany) made his season debut for George Washington on Sunday. That was the good news. The bad news, of course, was that the Colonials lost again, as Niagara won the series with a 4-2 victory. Germinerio pitched 2 2/3 innings, giving up a run on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strikeeouts. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena/Virginia Commonwealth) didn't play, as he's still struggling at the plate, though he had a good outing earlier in the series. The Colonials visit Maryland on Tuesday.

March Sadness in the 518

 Only one team remains in the state basketball tournament, representing Section II.

Class B champion Catholic Central will get an early wake-up call tomorrow after advancing to the state finals with a 62-52 win over Southamption earlier today at Cool Insuring Arena. The finals tip off at 1 pm Sunday, with the Crusaders taking on Westhill.

Men's Class D champion North Warren was eliminated later in the day, losing to Chapel Field, 47-46. North Warren, because they play in the Adirondack League, don't get the same kind of coverage as most of the other teams in Section II, but they have built a solid program the last few years.

As for the women, all four remaining Section II teams were knocked out in the space of a little more than 24 hours between Friday morning and this afternoon.

In a shocker, defending Class A champion Averill Park got off to a slower than normal start against Walter Panas, which advanced to the title game with a 47-42 upset. As reported yesterday, Class B champion Albany Academy saw their historic rise stop at the hands of Putnam Valley, 70-50. The Bears, though, do have a nucleus for next season, and Averill Park always reloads.

Today, Oxford Academy, using the same kind of trapping, pressure defense that Section II teams have embraced in the last couple of years, eliminated women's Class D titlist Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 75-54, pulling away in the 4th quarter after the Golden Knights had gotten within 4 at one point. Nate Lull, who has been posting results on Twitter, repeatedly referred to Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons as the Crimson Knights before someone finally corrected him in the 4th quarter. Apparently, the Knights' road colors confused Lull.

Finally, Class C champion Greenwich fell to Millbrook, 70-52. I'd make a reference to bread, but they stopped making Millbrook bread years ago.

The ill fortune followed UAlbany along the Massachusetts Turnpike, as the Lady Danes went 1 & done in the women's NIT, losing to homestanding UMass-Lowell, 73-48. Kayla Cooper was the lone Lady Dane in double figures with 18 points.

Of course, there's always next year.

News & notes

 The superlative season of Albany Academy For Girls came to an end this morning at Hudson Valley Community College with a 70-50 loss to Putnam Valley. Congratulations to the Bears on a fantastic season at 24-2.

Women's Class A champion Averill Park is due on court in about a half hour vs. Walter Panas.
=============================================
After winning Rookie of The Year honors in the America East Conference, Jonathan Beagle has entered the transfer portal at UAlbany. Beagle issued the following statement:

=============================================
It used to be that when the Muscular Dystrophy Association held their annual Labor Day telethons, viewers were urged to stay up with Jerry Lewis and "watch the stars come out".

In 2023, that applies to the NCAA men's tournament at MVP Arena. Check out who's in the house today....

Photo courtesy Pete Dougherty, Albany Times-Union.

Everyone knows Bill Murray is a big time sports fan, having been seen at a zillion Chicago Cubs games, even singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" at least once. We'll be hearing about this all day, I'm sure.
===================================================
When the Atlanta Braves open their season in 2 weeks, Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson will be suiting up for their Triple A team in Gwinnett.

Anderson was optioned to Gwinnett earlier this week after finishing the season there last year. The Braves are hoping Anderson can correct whatever it was that was causing him so much trouble in 2022 after beginning his major league career in 2020, and being a part of the team's World Series run in 2021. We're all rooting for you, Ian.

Mitchell 9, Cobleskill 2.

Southeastern 18, Hudson Valley 1 (5 innings).

Women's lacrosse:

UAlbany 17, UCalifornia-Davis 15. Shonly Wallace led the Lady Danes with 5 goals, including the game winner. UAlbany improves to 4-4.

Army 18, Siena 14. Brigid Duffy (Queensbury) had 5 goals to lead the Black Knights, who are undefeated at 7-0. Siena falls to 4-4.

News & notes

 Troy High's Michael DiNardo will stay close to home for college.

The Daily Gazette is reporting that DiNardo will play college football at Union starting in September, coming off a successful senior season at Troy. With this year's Dutchmen's Shoes game set for Frank Bailey Field at Union in November, the earliest homecoming for DiNardo will be in 2024, when the annual rivalry game vs. RPI returns to Troy.
=================================================
UAlbany's baseball team was to play Army today at West Point, but that game was postponed in advance due to Tuesday's storm.

The two schools are working on rescheduling the game at a later date.

In other UAlbany news, the women's basketball team will play UMass-Amherst in the first round of the Women's NIT on Friday at the Mullins Center. However, there is no TV or radio coverage scheduled, and that stinks. The women's games do not air on the school radio station, WCDB, for whatever reason, but should.
================================================
518 Alumni watch:

Former Troy star David Judge is tearing it up for Lynn College in Florida. Judge leads the team in average at .386, and has 4 homers and 20 RBI, which also leads the team. The Lynn Fighting Knights, whom no one had heard of until now, are 10-8-1 this season.

George Washington University continues to struggle on the field. The Colonials got smacked, 20-5, at the hands of Virginia on Tuesday, in a game that aired on the ACC Network (part of ESPN). Brett Young (Albany Academy/Virginia Commonwealth/Siena) was, in fact, benched over the weekend, as he's batting .167, and while his coaches had a chance to put him in the field late in a blowout, they opted not to do so. The Colonials return home today to play Maine (America East) before playing Niagara (MAAC), also at home, this weekend. Friday's game, at least, will stream on ESPN+.

UAlbany baseball comes to The Joe

 I suppose this was inevitable.

A few years ago, Hudson Valley Community College became part of the network of colleges of the State University of New York (SUNY). With SEFCU Arena undergoing renovations this winter, UAlbany's men's & women's basketball teams moved their home games to the Joseph McDonough Field House at HVCC.

Now, a handful of UAlbany baseball games will be played at Bruno Stadium on the HVCC campus.

While some media outlets are saying six games will be played, all on Fridays as the opening game of a weekend series, the school's website confirms that it's just five games. To wit:

Friday, March 24 – vs. UMBC @ 3:00 p.m.

Friday, April 14 – vs. UMass Lowell @ 6:00 p.m.

Friday, April 28 – vs. Wagner @ 6:00 p.m.

Friday, May 5 – vs. Binghamton @ 6:00 p.m.

Thursday, May 18 – vs. NJIT @ 6:00 p.m.

Weather permitting, of course. In the event the game is postponed and can't be played at Bruno Stadium, it'll be moved to UAlbany's campus field. The only thing missing is an exhibition with HVCC's team. Remember, UAlbany played every other college in the 518 except HVCC during basketball season, and it would be a disservice to snub the baseball team, too.

Stay tuned.

Monday, March 13, 2023

March Madness comes to Albany. Again.

 It has been 10 years since the NCAA men's basketball tournament has been in Albany. Oh, sure, we've had hockey and women's basketball, but now, it's the men's turn.

What is odd, though, is that the selection committee has assigned two 1st round games each in the Midwest & West Regionals in MVP Arena, instead of the East Regional, which would make more sense. The teams that win and advance to the 3rd round after play on Sunday will be headed across country.

So here's what to look forward to in Friday's quadruple-header. Make sure you've got snow tires in case there's still some sloppy road conditions.

West Regional, 1st round:

2 pm: St. Mary's (not to be confused with Mount St. Mary's) vs. Virginia Commonwealth.

4:30 pm: UConn vs. Iona. Albany Academy grad Marcus Jackson returns to the 518 to face MAAC champion Iona and coach Rick Pitino. According to WNYT's Rodger Wyland, Pitino apparently will leave Iona for St. John's after the Gaels are eliminated.

Midwest Regional, 1st round:

7:25 pm: Miami (Florida) vs. Drake.

9:55 pm: Indiana vs. Kent State.

Had they scheduled the East Regional at MVP Arena, there's no guarantee America East champion Vermont would be booked for Albany. Had Siena not flopped in the MAAC tournament, going one and done, they could've gotten one more game on their home court, what we would call a de-facto home game.

What isn't clear is what channel(s) the games will be on. We'll know for sure later this week. You know WRGB is angling to get all four games, but cable seems more likely. Check your listings for stations, and, if you're going to the games, set your DVR's.

Update, 5:31 pm: All four Friday games will air on TBS (Spectrum digital channel 104).

News & notes

=========================================
Siena College has had a bad week.

First, baseball coach Tony Rossi stepped down ahead of his planned retirement date of March 20.

Then, the basketball teams were eliminated within 24 hours of each other in the MAAC tournament in Atlantic City.

The baseball team has lost the first two games of their series at Florida, 3-2 on Friday, 11-0 in a 7 inning game on Saturday, extending the current losing streak to 3 games. Today's getaway day game will be seen on the SEC Network+. which may or may be airing on cable, at 1 pm.

Luckily, the softball team is idle until Friday, March 18.
==========================================
The rest of Saturday's college scoreboard:

Baseball:

RPI split a doubleheader with Colby.

1st game: Colby 9, RPI 8.
2nd game: RPI 3, Colby 0.

St. John's 11, UAlbany 2.
Russell Sage 12, SUNY Polytechnic 2.
Hudson Valley 11, Camden County 1.

Men's lacrosse:

Maryland 16, UAlbany 9.
Roberts Wesleyan 17, St. Rose 8.
Siena 11, Sacred Heart 8. Well, at least there is some gold at the end of the week's rainbow for the Saints.

MIT 14, RPI 10.
Union 21, Emerson 8
SUNY-Cobleskill 23, Eastern Nazarene 7.

Women's lacrosse:

Men's volleyball:

Russell Sage lost a pair of matches, shut out by Nichols and Emerson in straight sets each.
=======================================
The Albany Patroons are enjoying their first trip to Canada this season.

The team finishes a 3 game weekend sojourn north of the border today at Academie Alma. The TBL is streaming the game for free at 3 pm. Albany has won 3 in a row.
========================================
However, the Great White North wasn't too kind to the Albany Firewolves, as they dropped a 11-6 decision to Toronto. The 'Wolves return home for Star Wars night on March 25.

Saturday, March 11, 2023

News & notes

 We've seen so many low-scoring games in high school play the last couple of years, you wouldn't think that it would also happen at the college level.

But, it did.

In the America East women's final on Friday, defense was key. UAlbany & Vermont were tied at 4 after the first period. The Lady Catamounts led, 17-10, at halftime, as if this was a football game, en route to capturing the title, 38-36.

Kayla Cooper led Albany with 12 points. Coach Colleen Mullen has already said that the Lady Danes will accept a bid for the Women's NIT.

It might be in Siena's best interest if they did the same.

Less than 24 hours after beating Fairfield for the 3rd time this season, and after the men's season ended, the Lady Saints fell to Iona for the 3rd time, 67-66. Anaja Brown led Siena with 20 points. Ahniysha Jackson added 18. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson was held to one free throw.
======================================
Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson started Friday's pre-season game between Atlanta & Tampa Bay. Anderson went 3 2/3 innings, giving up just a run and a hit, walking three, and striking out two. Nick Anderson (no relation), acquired from Miami (I think) in a trade, picked up the win, as Atlanta won, 3-2.
======================================
State regional play is underway as I write, with 2 women's games already in the books, and a men's game near the finish.

In Women's Class D, Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons defeated Seton Catholic, 37-30, and will return to Hudson Valley Community College one week from today.

However, Onondaga Community College has proven to be kryptonite to Section II's Class AA champions.

Liverpool defeated Albany in women's play, 56-51. As this is being written, the Liverpool men are on the verge of eliminating Green Tech. Full results tomorrow.
======================================
The rest of Friday's college scores:

Trending in opposite directions

 The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament began in earnest on Thursday in Atlantic City, but by the time the final buzzer sounded, somewhere in the neighborhood close to midnight, knowing how the men's games tend to slow down with all the time outs, Siena College's chances of sweeping this year's events were cut down.

The Siena men were hoping to snap a five game losing streak entering play Thursday as the #4 seed. However, Niagara had other ideas, and held off a late second half rally by the Saints to advance, 71-65. The early exit means Siena will begin the 2023-4 season on a 6 game losing streak.

Javian McCollum led the Saints with 24 points. Andrew Platek (Guilderland/North Carolina) added 5 in what likely is his final game in a Siena uniform.

Earlier Thursday, the women advanced by defeating Fairfield for the 3rd time this season, 59-53. Angel Jones and Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) led Siena with 10 points each, while Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) added 9, as Siena used more of a balanced scoring offense. They'll play Iona in the semi-finals next. Iona swept Siena in the regular season, so Siena has that to contend with.

Even if the Lady Saints don't win, there's always the prospect of being invited to a secondary tournament, like the women's NIT. As for the men?  Possible, but not probable.

News & notes

 UAlbany picked up its 1st win in baseball this season on Wednesday, blowing out Central Connecticut State, 16-3. Matt Mariano (Shenendehowa) went 3 innings to pick up the win, striking out two and allowing only a walk and a hit. Ty Santabarbara (Guilderland) began the parade of relievers, giving up an unearned run on an error he committed and a hit, with one strikeout. The Great Danes will visit St. John's this weekend, then Army & Maryland, before the home opener vs. UMBC on March 24.
==============================================
As the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament begins today in Atlantic City, the Siena women are still not getting any respect, as some radio stations are only promoting the men's team.

This might be because, in the case of Albany Broadcasting, they have the rights to Siena men's games (ALT 104.9), and can't be bothered to talk up the women as well just because the women's games are on the school's own station. UAlbany's women have had the same problem, and they're playing for the America East title on Friday.

News & notes

 Just five weeks ago, the Tri-City Valleycats welcomed back the reigning home run champion in the Frontier League, Denis Phipps.

On Monday, they said good-bye.

Seeing a need to go younger heading into the 2023 season, the 'Cats shipped Phipps off to Charleston of the Atlantic League for a player to be named later. At the same time, Tri-City shipped first baseman Brad Zunica off to Chicago of the American Association in exchange for pitcher Elijah Gill, and welcomed back third baseman Pavin Parks, shortstop Cito Culver, and outfielder Carson McCusker. First baseman-outfielder Zach Biermann was reacquired from Evansville to fill the voids created by Zunica & Phipps' departures. The 'Cats had earlier lost Frontier League batting champion Brantley Bell, who signed a free agent deal with San Diego.

GM Matt Callahan said that there are more moves coming with the season two months away. Stay tuned.
=====================================
Siena College's baseball team is off to a very slow start. Things have gotten so bad (how bad is it?), such that coach Tony Rossi announced Monday he is stepping down, effective immediately, although he was going to step down on March 20 originally. Joe Sheridan was named interim coach, effective March 20. Siena is 2-10 on the young season, and the combination of transfers leaving the school before the season and the inability to reload after graduation last year may have weighed heavily on Rossi, 79.
====================================
Siena basketball fans were hoping the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference would move their post-season tournament back to Albany after this year's event. Nope.

The MAAC voted on Monday to keep the tournament in Atlantic City, which ensures that none of the teams would have a home court advantage, unlike at MVP Arena in Albany, where Siena plays their home games, and won 4 MAAC titles since the arena opened as Knickerbocker Arena in 1990.
======================================
To update the state regional basketball schedule for this week, we now have dates and venues for the Class C & D champions in men's play.

Chatham will be at Clinton Community College, outside of Syracuse, tomorrow to play Moriah. Tip time there is 7:35 pm as the 2nd half of a men's & women's double-header, with Greenwich's women's team facing Northeastern Clinton at 5 pm.

North Warren will be at Hudson Valley Community College to play Schroon Lake, Friday at 6:45 pm in Class D play.

Monday, March 6, 2023

News & notes

In an interview with Troy High's Terrance Clark, appearing in today's Albany Times-Union, James Allen noted that Daniel Covington had been "released" from the team, meaning Covington was cut by coach John Killian, likely for disciplinary issues. At least now that case is closed.
=========================================
UAlbany's women's basketball team will head to Vermont to play for the America East title on Friday after closing out their home schedule with a 72-64 win over Maine Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College. Kayla Cooper led the Lady Danes with 23 points. Grace Heeps and Lilly Phillips chipped in with 2 points each. Friday's game will air on ESPNU (Spectrum Cable channel 370) at 5 pm.

=====================================

News & notes

 Aside from the Adirondack Thunder of the East Coast Hockey League, hockey season is over in the 518.

Local high school & college teams went 0-4 on Saturday, seeing their seasons end in miserable fashion.

In the 1st round of the ECAC playoffs, Princeton avenged a loss last weekend by shutting out Union, 3-0. Yale continued its mastery of RPI with a 4-1 win at the Houston Field House.

On the high school side, Queensbury, in division 2, was shut out by Saranac, 3-1, hours after Bethlehem saw its season end in a 4-0 loss to Suffern. Another year, another Section II champion going out in the 1st round of state play. Not even hosting the game could change Section II's fortunes.

Of course, there's always next year.
=========================================
Championship weekend ends today at Cohoes High with the Class CC/C unification game between Duanesburg and Chatham. The Eagles & Panthers have a very tough act to follow after four rocket buster games on Saturday in Glens Falls.

That quadruple-header had the game times moved back due to weather, but the action was hot nonetheless.

North Warren won the Class D title, downing Northville, 46-33, pulling away in the 2nd half.

In the opener on Saturday, Catholic Central, which hadn't won a sectional title since 1981, when the legendary Don Bassett was still the coach, beat homestanding Glens Falls, 73-59. Darien Moore led the Crusaders with 27 points. Catholic Central, while their campus is now in Latham, still plays their home games at Monsignor Burns Gym on 114th Street & 7th Avenue, and was a member of the now-defunct Big 10 when they last won a sectional crown.

Troy High won its 3rd Class A title since entering the Suburban Council in 2015, going to double overtime before putting away top-seeded Amsterdam, 72-68. Three titles with three different coaches (Richard Hurley, Greg Davis, John Killian), and, counting a Class AA title 10 years ago, it's 4 titles in 10 years. Troy, in fact, didn't win the Grey division this time, unlike in 2016 & 2019, when they parlayed the division title into a sectional title.

8th grade phenom Stetson Merritt led the way with 23 points. Terrance Clark added 22, and Steven Foust had 10. Caesar Thompson led Amsterdam with 17 points, while Jhai Vellani added 14.

Green Tech repeated as Class AA champions, beating CBA for the 2nd straight season, 72-36. The Brothers had avenged last year's loss two months ago, but were blown right off the court. Green Tech led, 41-19, at halftime, and were never threatened in the second half to claim their 3rd title.
===============================================
Siena College's men's basketball team will limp into the MAAC tournament in Atlantic City on a 5 game losing streak after dropping a 73-72 overtime decision to St. Peter's on Saturday. Their first tournament game is Thursday night vs. Niagara.

In contrast, the Lady Saints enter the post-season with momentum after blowing out Canisius, 76-58. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) had 15 points in support of leading scorer Emina Selimovic, who had 22. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) chipped in with 7 points. Siena's first tournament game will be against Fairfield Thursday afternoon.

News & notes

 The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Albany & Averill Park finished 1-2 in the Suburban Council Grey division in women's basketball this season, and the division title has always come down to these two teams since the Falcons entered the league, along with Troy & Schenectady, in 2015.

On Friday, both teams were holding up title trophies.

Averill Park won its 9th straight Class A title, outlasting Catholic Central, another former Big 10 school now in the Colonial Council, 62-49. Taylor Holohan was named tournament MVP.

In the nightcap, Albany avenged a regular season loss to Blue division champion Bethlehem, downing the Eagles, 57-49. Kim Wise's Eagles have enough talent to return to the finals next year, but the Falcons, motivated by not only the revenge factor, but the hunger to repeat as Class AA champs, led from the start, and never looked back.

The day began at Hudson Valley Community College with Greenwich unifying the Class C/CC titles in beating Duanesburg, 51-43.

State play starts next week.

In Glens Falls, Duanesburg won its first Class C men's title, outlasting Hoosic Valley, 58-49. They'll play Class CC champion Chatham, which beat Stillwater, 58-56, tomorrow at Cohoes High.

The Cool Insuring Arena will host a quadruple-header of title games starting at 11 am this morning, weather permitting. The lineup:

Class D: North Warren vs. Northville.

Class B: Catholic Central vs. Glens Falls.

Class A: Troy vs. Amsterdam.

Class AA: Green Tech vs. CBA.
================================================
Speaking of Green Tech, two of their alumni returned to the Washington Avenue Armory as members of the Albany Patroons Friday night. You know that Derrick Rowland, Jr. is playing for his father, Derrick, Sr., and has been reunited with Jamil Hood, Jr., whose father coached the Soaring Eagles to the 2014 Class AA title.

Unfortunately, the reunion tour got off to a bad start, as Albany lost to Syracuse, 115-108.
================================================
518 Alumni Watch:

It has not been a good start to the season for Brett Young (Siena/Albany Academy/Virginia Commonwealth) at George Washington. The Colonials are 2-7 after a 2-0 loss to McNeese State on Friday. Young went 0-4, dropping his season average to .182 through nine games.

Anthony Germinerio (Averill Park/UAlbany) has not yet seen the field to pitch for GWU, which says he may be injured.

Siena's softball team is spending the weekend in Northern California, and swept a doubleheader on Friday, beating Alabama State, 6-3, and host UC Davis, 1-0. Ava Fitzmaurice (Greenville/New Haven) went 2-7 at the plate on the day, and has a .391 batting average heading into today's action. McKenzie Swinson, who transferred from UAlbany, was 2-4 on the day, and has a .438 average. The Averill Park grad is the Saints' leadoff hitter. Angelina Stile (Ballston Spa) was 1-5 for the day, batting .294.
===============================================
WWE will make its 1st trip to Albany on Memorial Day, May 29, for Monday Night Raw and the online-only Main Event. Tickets will be on sale at MVP Arena, if not already, within a week.

News & notes

 10 years ago, Green Tech spoiled Christian Brothers Academy's bid for a 2nd straight Section II Class AA title, upsetting the Brothers in the semi-finals before falling to Troy High in the finals. The Eagles would then win the title themselves the next year.

Two months ago, CBA gained a measure of revenge, beating Green Tech, 47-43. That win helped spur the Brothers toward reaching the AA finals again this season. However, the Eagles will be waiting for them Saturday at Cool Insuring Arena.

This was made possible as Green Tech notched another upset, beating Suburban Council Grey division champion Ballston Spa, 59-56, on Thursday. Haisi Mayben led the Eagles with 18 points. Nick Verdile had a game high 28 points for the Scotties, whose fourth quarter comeback came up short this time.

Meanwhile, CBA advanced by dispatching Saratoga, 56-43. The Brothers had previously defeated the Blue Streaks, and you have to believe they were hoping to avenge a January loss to Ballston Spa, but it was not to be.

The only thing that could prevent the game from happening Saturday is, of course, weather, as another storm system is headed into the 518 later today.
===============================================
The women's Class D title was decided Thursday at Hudson Valley Community College, as Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons defeated Hartford, 58-48. The Class B title went to Albany Academy, as the top seeded Bears downed Catskill, 64-36.

The other men's game on Thursday saw North Warren advance to the Class D title game with a 61-38 win over Argyle in a battle of Adirondack League clubs. North Warren will play Northville, another Adirondack League rival, for the title, weather permitting, of course, on Saturday.
===============================================
Once again, El Cheapo Media (The Record/Saratogian) let a good sportswriter get away.

Kyle Adams, a reporter-photographer for El Cheapo the last few years, has followed Stan Hudy over to the Daily Gazette. Adams let his Twitter followers in on the news once he gave his two week notice to El Cheapo.

For those who have wondered about disgraced ex-El Cheapo reporter Sam Blum, who was run out of town six years ago after a failed expose on Troy High's women's basketball program led to the school freezing out El Cheapo reporters for about 3-4 years, Blum has resurfaced with the website, The Athletic. Let's see how long he lasts there.
==================================================
Manhattan spoiled Senior Night for Siena at MVP Arena Thursday night, 67-66. Javion McCollum led Siena with a game high 30 points. Andrew Platek (Guilderland/North Carolina) didn't score.
=================================================
Following up on yesterday's bombshell news regarding the Albany Empire, Eddie Brown has been named a team Vice President. Son Antonio was also at the presser Thursday at MVP Arena, and said he wants to do some work in the community, just like his dad did with the Firebirds back in the day. Eddie has said that returning to Albany, where Antonio spent his formative years, might give the former All-Pro receiver a fresh start. Let's hope so.

News & notes

 UAlbany's women's basketball team is one step closer to repeating as America East champions after disposing of UMass-Lowell, 59-51, in front of less that 600 fans at Hudson Valley Community College. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) came off the injured list, and contributed six points. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 13 points. Grace Heeps (Columbia/UMass) added six. Abby Ray (Saratoga) didn't play.

The Lady Danes will get three days off before their next game, Sunday at HVCC, vs. Maine.
===========================================
Section II hockey champ Bethlehem has earned another home game, as they'll start state regional play Saturday at home vs. Suffern. This might be the key to ending the state regional jinx that has plagued Section II teams for years. Queensbury, playing in Division II, is waiting to find out who their opponent will be on Saturday.
==========================================
Get ready for some tabloid drama with the Albany Empire.

The team announced Wednesday that 2nd generation star Antonio Brown, who was in grade school when father Eddie starred for the Firebirds in the 90's, has joined the ownership group, and that Eddie also has a stake in the team. However, media efforts to contact Eddie Brown in Florida have been in vain to this point.

What strikes me as odd is WNYT anchor Rodger Wyland, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, actually endorsing this move, despite the baggage Antonio is bringing with him due to his diva behavior and legal troubles the last few years. Maybe he thinks being back in the 518 for business purposes only might change Antonio Brown's attitude. The 34 year old receiver will not suit up for the Empire, perhaps knowing what kind of scrutiny that would bring.
========================================
Troy High has one more Foothills Council pelt to collect before claiming another Section II Class A title.

The Flying Horses (12-10) got balanced scoring from Terrance Clark (18 points) and Stetson Merritt (17) to offset Hudson Falls' Peyton Smith and his game high 26 points, as Troy advances to Saturday's title game, 53-50.

Up next will be Amsterdam, which spoiled the dreams of Troy residents by beating Lansingburgh, 75-63. I know there were more than a few people who wanted to see a rematch of the 2016 title game between the Knights & Horses, but it was not to be. Tip time Saturday is approximately 2:30 pm. Considering Wednesday's opening game between Glens Falls & Tamarac, ran long, delaying Troy-Hudson Falls by about half an hour, now you know why I have to use "approximately".

In the Class B semi, Glens Falls, in front of the home fans, eliminated Tamarac, 59-57. They'll play Saturday against Catholic Central at 12:45.

In Class D, Northville defeated Loudonville Christian, 39-30, in a low scoring affair. Northville advances to the finals, where they'll play the winner of today's North Warren-Argyle game.

News & notes

 While the America East tournament gets underway tonight for UAlbany's women's basketball team, the season is over for the men after a 79-61 loss to Vermont Tuesday night.

The Great Danes finish 8-23, a product of inconsistent play, injuries, and off-court distractions involving coach Dwayne Killings, who, for all intents & purposes, may have coached his last game in Albany. There had been a call not too long ago from fans for Killings to dismissed, and that could still happen, but the sticking point might be what to do about Killings' contract, which still has some time left. Stay tuned.
==============================================
Bethlehem reclaimed the Section II hockey title Tuesday at Union College with a 4-1 victory over the upstart Captial District Jets. Rory Cairns stopped 28 shots in leading the Eagles to the title.

What isn't known is who Bethlehem will play in the state tournament this weekend. With one sectional title in the trophy case, Bethlehem will be hoping to add a 2nd one when the women's basketball team plays Albany for the Class AA title Friday at Hudson Valley Community College.
