News & notes

 Broadalbin-Perth & Siena graduate Matt Gage is looking at playing closer to home this season.

Gage, who finished last season in the Houston Astros' chain, signed a minor league deal with the Yankees, likely with an invitation to spring training next month. The Yanks could use the bullpen help, so, aside from the predictable shuttle from the Bronx to Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, where the Yankees' top farm team is, I'd expect Gage to get a long look this season.

Averill Park grad Amelia Wood lost her starting job with Sacred Heart, but the move has actually been a benefit, according to Bill Arsenault of the Albany Times-Union.

Arsenault reports today that Wood, a sophomore, has been a big contributor off the bench for the Lady Pioneers, who've won three straight with Wood as a reserve. She had 23 points in 27 minutes in Saturday's win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

News & notes

 Not only was Siena missing sophomore star Michael Eley (hamstring) yet again on Sunday, but Sean Durogordon was also out. That, going into a Sunday matinee vs. St. Peter's, was a recipe for disaster.

After being tied at 33-33 at halftime, the Saints were outscored, 30-19, in the 2nd half, as St. Peter's pulled away to a 63-52 win. Zek Tekin led Siena with 22 points. Mason Courtney (Shenendehowa) had 5 points in 33 minutes.

Siena heads to New Jersey Friday night to play Ruder before returning to MVP Arena to play Mount St. Mary's next Sunday in another matinee at 2 pm.
=========================================================
The only high school action on Sunday was outside of Section II, as Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa wrapped a weekend road trip in Western NY with a loss to Oswego, 5-3. If the season were to end now, the Spartan Scotties would be the #7 seed in the Section II tournament, as they trail front-running Shenendehowa by 12 points.
==========================================================
Sunday's snow didn't have much of an effect on today's high school schedule. As of now, only one event has been postponed, that being a men's volleyball match between independent Loudonville Christian and Cobleskill-Richmondville, currently representing the Colonial Council, but will be headed for the Western Athletic Conference next season.

News & notes

 Two months ago, Union reclaimed the Dutchmen's Shoes. On Saturday, they held on to the Mayor's Cup, and clinched the season series vs. RPI.

The Garnet Chargers won their 8th game in 11 Mayor's Cup contests, downing the Engineers, 5-3, in front of nearly 5700 fans at MVP Arena. RPI & Union split two games in November, setting this up as the rubber game of the series.

On the up side for RPI, the women defeated Union, 1-0. In contrast to the men, RPI has won 5 of the 6 Women's Mayor's Cup games. Amanda Rampado had 14 saves to lead RPI, including stoning Union's Emma Fulawaka with 4 1/2 seconds left in regulation to clinch it.
===================================================
UAlbany's women's basketball team continues to roll, hiking their record overall to 18-2 with a 54-48 win over New Hampshire at Broadview Center Saturday afternoon. However, the win came with a price in the form of ankle injuries to Meghan Huerter & Lilly Phillips. The two Section II alumni (Shenendehowa & Cambridge, respectively) finished with a collective 17 points (9 & 8, respectively). Coach Colleen Mullen is hoping to get one or both of them back for Thursday's home game vs. Vermont. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 13 points, and Helene Haegerstrand added 12.
====================================================
The UAlbany men snapped a 3 game losing streak in beating New Hampshire, 86-79. Amare Marshall led Albany with 29 points. Sebastian Thomas added 25, and Jonathan Beagle (Hudson Falls) contributed 14. The road trip continues at the Danes' personal house of horrors in Vermont on Thursday.

Callan Drake, Shaker (84 pounds).
Ragan Retell, Tamarac (126 pounds)
Mia Collins, Ballston Spa (132 pounds)
Elle Hutton, Columbia (185 pounds).

Drake & Retell are seniors. Collins & Hutton are juniors who could return to defend their titles next year. Congratulations to all four.
=================================================
Without Michael Eley, still nursing a hamstring injury, Siena fell again Friday at MVP Arena. Iona used a suffocating full court pressure defense to shut down the Saints, and pick up a 70-51 win.

Siena (3-16 overall) stays home to play St. Peter's tomorrow.at 2 pm (JAMZ 96.3, WNYA). They have a couple of promotions, including Coaches vs. Cancer Suits & Sneakers Day and Spirit Squad Alumni Day, meaning former pep squad members will be returning for the day.

News & notes

 For the 2nd straight year, Bethlehem marked Senior Night for their women's basketball team by hosting Troy High.

The Eagles have owned Troy since the 2014-15 season, when Troy was an independent, transitioning from the Big 10 to the Suburban Council. Hence, Thursday was more of the same, as Troy dropped its 4th straight, 73-35. No stats have been made available as of press time, and we'll have them tomorrow. Same goes for the men's game at Zotto Gym, as Bethlehem completed the sweep, 72-49. The Troy men have lost three in a row, and will play Niskayuna on Tuesday.
====================================================
Jonathan Beagle (Hudson Falls) didn't start, but came off the bench to score 14 points. However, a late UAlbany rally was snuffed, and the Great Danes fell to Maine, 81-73. Sebastian Thomas led Albany with 20 points, and Amare Marshall added 15. Marcus Jackson (Albany Academy) chipped in with 5 points. The New England road trip continues at New Hampshire Saturday.

Meanwhile, at Broadview Center, Colleen Mullen and the Lady Danes welcomed back Deja Evans, who scored 17 points to lead Albany past Maine, 54-47. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) had 8 points, Meghan Huerter (Shenendehowa/Providence) had just 2 points in 23 minutes, and Abby Ray (Saratoga) was held scoreless in 11 minutes. New Hampshire will be in town for National Girls & Women in Sports Day Saturday at 2 pm.

It's just too bad the Lady Danes don't have a radio deal like the men do.
=====================================================
There are rumors circulating in both local college and high school basketball.

College first. I'm hearing that if Siena cuts loose coach Carmen Maciariello after the season, they may be looking at bringing in Will Brown, who will be looking for something to do after the College of St. Rose closes in May. I would not be at all surprised if "Coach Carm" is shown the door after a season plagued by constant injuries plaguing sophomore star Michael Eley, whom the Saints are hoping to get back in the lineup tonight vs. Iona.

On the high school side, a reliable source says they've heard talk about Troy High possibly leaving the Suburban Council after 9 seasons, and heading to the Colonial Council.

Now, this does have some meat to it if it's true.

As was discussed the other day, Troy AD Paul Reinisch had a choice to make in 2015, and opted for the Suburban Council, the toughest league in Section II, swapping out hometown traditional rivalries with LaSalle & Catholic Central for new challenges, including a territorial rivalry with Averill Park.

We know Troy's had success in men's basketball, as well as softball & baseball, over the course of its time in the league. Football is in a classification format, not part of either league. By moving to the Colonial, Troy revives its rivalries with LaSalle & Catholic Central, and would start a crosstown, regular season rivalry with Lansingburgh. The fact that Troy will play a home & home series in softball vs. Cohoes, while baseball games vs. Schalmont & LaSalle are on the docket as well, lends credence to the rumors.

In effect, Troy would be ending long standing rivalries with Schenectady, CBA, & Albany, if the rumors become fact. Stay tuned.

The NY Racing Association has announced that Saratoga will host 23 stakes races in the 4 day Belmont Stakes Racing Festival, taking place June 6-9.

Some races, including the Belmont, will be run at shorter than normal distances because of the smaller oval at the Old Spa. The Belmont is one of five races reconfigured to 1 1/4 miles. The others are the Acorn, the Critical Eye, the Ogden Phipps, named for the owner-breeder, and the Commentator.

The spring-summer meet will be run at Aqueduct until June 5, then return a week later to finish out before Saratoga begins its annual meet July 11.

Troy High 2024 baseball & softball schedules

 It's only late January, but Troy High has released its 2024 baseball & softball schedules. Lacrosse & tennis schedules are also out, and we'll have those later in the week.

While the flag football schedule for the women isn't out yet, Troy is adding junior varsity lacrosse for the women this season. We'll have that soon, too.

This is the schedule for baseball & softball as of right now. Certain opponents are not yet scheduled, and Sean Geisel's softball team, beginning the post-Olivia DeCitise era, are playing a good number of non-league games as well.

Varsity baseball & softball travels together, with the JV's at the opposite venue in most cases.

March 29: Softball vs. Cohoes. 1st pitch is scheduled for 11 am, as it will be Easter week.

April 3: Baseball & softball vs. Ballston Spa. Baseball goes first in their home opener (as of now) at 11 am. The women go on the field at 4:45 pm.

April 5: Baseball & softball vs. Shenendehowa. Same schedule. Men at 11. Women at 4:45.

May 11: Baseball senior day vs. Schalmont (12 noon).

Schedule subject to change due to weather or other complications.

News & notes

 The Sacramento Kings sit in 3rd place in the NBA's Pacific Division. So why are there rumors circulating that Shenendehowa grad Kevin Huerter could be traded?

It's not just for the sake of talk, it seems, but the fact that Huerter isn't starting regularly, instead coming off the bench. Either way, WNYT's Rodger Wyland, writing in today's Albany Times-Union dismissed the notion of Huerter being dealt, noting that Huerter still has value as a bench player. Huerter scored 31 points in nearly 39 minutes in a loss to Indiana on Thursday night. Sacramento has dropped three in a row, and needs to turn things around. Keeping Huerter around, Wyland reasons, will help in that direction.
==================================================
Staying out west, Schenectady native Tara VanDerveer became the winningest coach in college basketball history, period, surpassing Duke icon Mike Krzyewski after Stanford beat Oregon State, 65-56, on Sunday. With 17 national titles, an Olympic gold medal, and now, the wins record, in 30 seasons at Stanford, VanDerveer, if she isn't there already, is surely a first ballot Hall of Famer.
================================================
Siena lost Michael Eley to injury----again----in Friday's loss Quinnipiac. The Saints had a 20-4 lead in the first half Sunday at Marist, and couldn't hold it.

Matt "Cool" McCool scored the winning basket with 4.2 seconds left to give the Red Foxes a 50-48 victory over the Saints, who can't seem to put together a winning streak. Instead, they've lost two straight since beating Niagara a week ago.

The Saints return to MVP Arena Friday to host Iona at 7 pm (WNYA-Spectrum channel 1215/JAMZ 96.3 FM). They're hoping to get Eley, out with a hamstring issue on Sunday, back for that game.

News & notes

 Siena got senior Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) back after a case of the flu for Saturday's Alumni Day matinee vs. Iona. Jackson hit a 3 pointer to start the 2nd half, and that was it. Anajah Brown led Siena 19 points and 10 rebounds, powering the Saints past the Gaels, 77-56. Siena (8-8 overall, 5-3 MAAC) will get a few days' rest before playing Quinnipiac next Saturday.
==============================================
Important stats from Friday's Averill Park-Troy games:

In the men's game, Stetson Merritt was held to 12 points, while older brother Legend led Troy with 14 points. Jacob Phelps, who has hurt Troy on the gridiron, had a game high 16 points for Averill Park.

The women's game, you know, was a massacre. Sanaya Adams led Troy with just 7 points as no Troy player reached double figures. Sean Organ's club shut down Amaya Harris, who only managed a free throw for 1 point. AP led, 23-3, after the 1st quarter, 38-5 at halftime, and 56-9 after three quarters before Organ pulled his starters. The next time he comes to Troy, he's going to be lustily booed out of the building. Trust me.
===============================================
Hudson Valley Community College hosted a men's & women's basketball doubleheader between Shaker & Shenendehowa. Understandably, the frigid temperatures kept a lot of fans away, but those that did brave the elements were treated to a thriller in the men's game, won by Shaker. Shen won the women's game in a blowout, 62-29.

The Albany FireWolves are undefeated no more.

The San Diego Seals saw to that Saturday at MVP Arena, upsetting the NLL leaders, 14-7. I wonder, though, if some wise guys will try to claim the arena was not cleansed of Siena's losing mojo after the Saints lost on Friday night in the same building. Just sayin'.

News & notes

 One of the reasons why Troy High chose to go to the Suburban Council in 2015 wasn't so much the higher level of competition in the league, but just as importantly, the development of a territorial rivalry with Averill Park.

When it comes to basketball, there are two distinctly different storylines that played out entering play on Friday.

On the men's side, Dave Pugilese had only won 1 game vs. Troy, and that was during the 2019-20 season. Averill Park has been hot & cold this season, but upset Bethlehem earlier this week, and Pugilese wanted to get a road win at Troy, which has been a house of horrors for the Warriors over the years.

Mission accomplished. While we won't have the stats until tomorrow, AP took down Troy, 50-44, to win their 2nd straight. Troy, coming off a win over Burnt Hills, goes back on the road Monday at Saratoga, before returning home to play Bethlehem on Thursday.

As for the women, Sean Organ's Averill Park squad has owned Troy since the 2015 Class A finals. It used to be that these games could be competitive, but they have not been so the last couple of seasons. Troy just does not have the talent presently to compete with AP, and it showed in a 65-22 loss on the road. Averill Park had the game won at halftime, leading, 38-5. I would imagine Organ called off the hounds around the 4th quarter or late in the 3rd to give Troy a fighting chance. Troy has now dropped 11 straight to AP dating back to 2015, and is clearly in rebuilding mode. Assuming 1st year coach Will Harris sticks around (along with his daughters) beyond this season, it'll take at least another year or two for the Lady Horses to catch up to the elite in the Suburban Council.

But the problem Troy's women have has nothing to do with Harris. You'd think the former UAlbany star would teach his players how to utilize the same full court pressure defense almost everyone else uses against them, but this writer suspects that he can't, because Athletic Director Paul Reinisch, or someone higher up the food chain, if you will, doesn't want that. Sticking to the half-court defense is hurting the Lady Horses for the 3rd straight season, and they need to catch up, preferably yesterday.

Amare Marshall led 4 Great Danes in double figures with 30 points, but it was not nearly enough to beat Lowell, as the River Hawks handed Albany their first loss at Broadview Arena this season, 97-76. Siena took down Rider in MAAC women's action, 79-58. Anajah Brown led Siena with 21 points. Ahniysha "Baby" Jackson (Albany) didn't play, and while we're not sure of this, it may be because of injury. We'll know for certain in Siena's next game.

News & notes

 If you were planning on seeing UAlbany play UMass-Lowell in softball this spring, you'll have to travel to Massachusetts to see the 3 game series between the Lady Danes and the River Hawks.

Lowell, with freshman Olivia DeCitise (Troy), will host Albany March 22-24 (weather permitting, of course), meaning that the only way the River Hawks come to Albany is if the Danes host the America East tournament at the end of the season.

Full schedule will be posted tomorrow.
=================================================

Can Troy High save their season(s)?

 Counting this week, there are 4 weeks left in the regular season in basketball for Troy High. No one expected the men, coming off a sectional title last season, to be below .500 this late in the season. 1st year coach Josh Pelletier has played the hand he was dealt, but, aside from the Merritt brothers, Legend (a senior) and Stetson (a freshman in his 2nd varsity season), offensive depth has been lacking, as Troy sits at 2-10 overall heading into tonight's game at Burnt Hills, rescheduled from last night due to weather.

Former UAlbany star Will Harris was brought in to try to clean up the mess that was the women's basketball program after a school-worst 1-20 campaign under Steve Lombard, who was shown the door rather quietly last spring. Harris has already exceeded last year's win total, with 3 on the plus side and a month to go. Like the men's team, Troy only has 1 league win, and that was in their last game, at Schenectady. However, it isn't going to be easy the rest of the way.

The remaining schedule. The women play at the opposite venue of the men. Men's games will be listed.

Tonight: @ Burnt Hills.

Friday: Averill Park.

Monday: @ Saratoga (rescheduled from January 9).

January 25: Bethlehem (rescheduled from January 26).

January 30: @ Niskayuna.

February 2: @ Columbia.

February 6: Colonie.

February 12: Senior Night vs. Guilderland.

The women have these extra games:

February 8: @ Greenville.

February 9: @ Hudson Falls.

Senior night for the women will be vs. Columbia on February 2.

Are there any winnable games left? For the guys, the best chance is against Averill Park on Friday. Dave Pugilese's club has won exactly 1 game vs. Troy since the Flying Horses entered the Suburban Council in 2015. Troy will be looking to avenge losses to Columbia & Guilderland otherwise. Former coach Greg Davis brings his currently unbeaten Colonie club to town, returning to Zotto Gym for the first time since he left for LaSalle.

The women? Not really sure.

Should they go to sectionals? I shouldn't bother asking this anymore, because they'll go regardless of record.

What do you think?

News & notes

 Siena College's men's basketball team snapped an 8 game losing streak Monday in beating Niagara, 93-88. Sean Durogordon led the way with a career high 36 points, his 2nd straight 30+ game. Michael Eley added 18 for Siena (3-13, 2-3 MAAC). The Saints return home to play Quinnipiac Friday night at MVP Arena.
========================================
As several schools in Section II are already closed or planning to close early today due to the weather, check with your schools to see if tonight's games are still on.

For example, Tamarac was to visit Emma Willard last night, but that game was pushed back to tonight, and likely gets moved again as Tamarac has cancelled all evening activities for tonight.

Sunday's high school scoreboard, 1/14

 LaSalle Institute hosted a 2 day tournament to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but, aside from a game report on Sunday's match between Our Lady of Lourdes & Catholic Central, the tournament got little or no play before today.

We don't know how the Cadets fared Saturday due to that lack of information. What we do know is that the Crusaders, who sit in 1st place in their division in the Colonial Council, ran their winning streak to 10 in a row by beating Bishop Ludden, 73-52, on Saturday, and taking down Our Lady of Lourdes, 85-50, on Sunday. Guy DiBacco's club hasn't lost since losing to Colonie in the season opener last month at Siena.

Similarly, a doubleheader at Troy High didn't get much play, either. We're waiting on the result of Sunday's rematch between Shaker & Bethlehem, with the Bison looking to avenge their loss on January 9.

In the nightcap, Troy dropped its 4th straight, 82-71, to Albany Academy. Cyrus Matia led 5 Cadets in double figures with 18 points. The Legend brothers, Stetson (12) & Legend (17) led Troy (2-10 overall), which is set to travel to Burnt Hills tomorrow before returning home to entertain Averill Park on Friday. Weather permitting in both cases, per early forecasts.

Back to LaSalle. The Troy Cadets took down Bishop Ludden, 72-52. Robert (Baron) Sicluna led LaSalle with 21 points, Tra'dell Faison added 20, and Emmanuel Karakari-Mensah chipped in with 14.

On the women's side......

Bethlehem 75, Cicero-North Syracuse 67. Paige Davenport & Kaitlyn Robbins returned after missing Tuesday's loss to Shaker. Davenport led the Eagles with 23 points. Robbins added 14. In all, Bethlehem hit 13 3-pointers, led by Davenport's 5 treys.

Catholic Central 63, Bishop Kearney 60.

Averill Park 53, Binghamton 33.

Shenendehowa 59, Pearl River 33.

News & notes

 The Binghamton Bearcats had identified Jonathan Beagle (Hudson Falls) as the biggest threat in the UAlbany lineup prior to Saturday's twilight game at Broadview Center. So Beagle got into foul trouble, and fouled out late in the 2nd half, held to just 1 point, a season low.

Still, Albany placed 5 players in double figures, led by Sebastian Thomas' 30 points, and defeated Binghamton, 95-75. Marcus Jackson (Albany Academy) added 15 points, and Aaron Reddish tallied 11.

Meanwhile, in Binghamton, the UAlbany women took down Binghamton, 60-58. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 23 points. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) added 16, Meghan Huerter (Shenendehowa/Providence) chipped in 11, and Abby Ray (Saratoga), in limited minutes, had 2 points.
================================================
Siena's women let an early lead slip away from them, as they fell to Fairfield, 78-73, in Connecticut. Theresa Seppala led the Saints with 22 points. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany High) had her 4th straight game in double figures with 16 points.
==============================================
The Albany FireWolves gained a measure of revenge on the Georgia Swarm after they were swept last season.

The 'Wolves improved to 6-0, tops in the National Lacrosse League, with a 12-8 verdict. Check the video:

========================================
Troy High earned its first win in Suburban Council women's basketball on Friday, taking down Schenectady, 55-37. 7th grader Amaya Harris, daughter of coach Will Harris, led the way with 22 points. Sanaya Adams backed up Harris with 12 points. Troy has won 2 of its last 3 overall ahead of a matchup with Burnt Hills on Tuesday. Troy has lost three in a row to the Spartans dating back to 2021.
=========================================
We noted yesterday that the Schenectady men completed a season sweep of Troy on Friday, 82-78. The final stats tell us that the Merritt brothers, Stetson & Legend, combined for 41 points (27 & 14, respectively) to lead Troy.
=========================================
RPI dropped a 4-2 decision in men's ECAC hockey to Clarkson on Saturday night at Houston Field House. It was not a good day for the Engineers, as the women were shut out by St. Lawrence, 3-0.

Saturday's high school hockey scoreboard:

CBA 5, Albany Academy 3.
Saratoga 8, Mohawks 4.
Queensbury 6, Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 4.
CD Jets 3, LaSalle 2.

Congressman Pat Ryan raised a stink over Saturday's Chiefs-Dolphins playoff, which was streaming exclusively on Peacock (and won by Kansas City, 26-7). Seems that Ryan was a little late to the party, because the NFL began an agreement with Amazon Prime prior to the 2022 season to stream Thursday Night Football, and Saturday's game was billed as an "experiment", albeit played in conditions worse than in Western NY, where, as noted yesterday, today's Steelers-Bills game was moved to Monday at 4:30 due to a snowstorm in the area, and a travel ban issued by Governor Hochul. The NY Democrat, it would appear, was concerned about loss of revenue from local sports bars in his district unable to show the game to their customers.

Saturday, January 13, 2024

Governor Hochul issues a travel ban. Two games affected

 Earlier today, ahead of a winter storm heading into New York tonight, Governor Kathy Hochul announced a travel ban in Erie County through tomorrow.

This ban adversely affects a pair of games that were scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

Siena's men's basketball team, which was to play Niagara tomorrow at 2, now will play Monday at Noon.

The Saints, who've dropped eight in a row, could use the extra time off.

Nationally, the AFC Wild Card game between Pittsburgh & Buffalo has also been moved to Monday afternoon at 4:30 pm. The game will be seen on CBS, and streaming on Paramount+.

As of right now, we don't know if there are similar issues for the 518.

News & notes

 We're waiting on the result of Friday's women's basketball game between Troy & Schenectady at the Riley Center. We can't assume anything, given these are the bottom two teams in the Suburban Council Grey division, so hopefully, scores & stats tomorrow.
================================================
RPI tallied 3 unanswered goals in the 3rd period to defeat St. Lawrence, 6-3, in front of 1600 fans at Houston Field House. John Evans had 2 goals and an assist, and finished the scoring with an empty net goal with under 3 minutes left. Sutter Muzatti had a goal and 2 assists. RPI hosts Clarkson tonight at 7.

Meanwhile, the RPI women fell to Clarkson, 3-1, and will play St. Lawrence this afternoon.

Over in Schenectady, Union downed Clarkson, 5-1, and will host St. Lawrence tonight at 7. The Lady Saints shut out the Lady Garnet Chargers, 4-0.
==================================================
Siena has now dropped 8 in a row in men's basketball after losing, 67-63, to Canisius. We can't pin the losing streak solely on injuries any longer. The team is just underachieving. Mason Courtney (Shenendehowa) was given a start, and finished with 12 points. Michael Eley was held to 7. Siena travels to Niagara tomorrow.
===================================================
The rest of Friday's college action:

Men's basketball:

News & notes

 We're still waiting on the result, if any, of Wednesday's Emma Willard-Troy basketball game. An e-mail to Troy AD Paul Reinisch went unanswered Thursday, which suggests that the game might have been cancelled at the last minute.

Meantime, the Jesters dropped a 65-51 decision to Mechanicville in Wasaren League play on Thursday.

Update, 7:34 pm: Emma Willard defeated Troy, 56-51, on Wednesday.
================================================
It was Kids' Day at Siena College Thursday vs. Niagara. As radio announcer Joe Mixie noted, most of the kids were leaving at the start of the 4th quarter due to time limitations, so they missed an exciting finish.

Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) had 17 points as one of 4 Saints in double figures, as Siena won, 66-64.
==================================================
There are no swimming results in today's paper due to space restrictions, but this much we know. Guilderville, after having their meet pushed back two days due to weather, defeated Troy/CBA/Columbia, 96-80. The Flying Devil Brothers will be back in the pool on Tuesday.
