News & notes

 Will the 3rd time be the charm for the Tri-City Valleycats in a doubleheader at Sussex County?

The 'Cats and the Miners have been rained out three consecutive days. Doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday & Sunday were among the postponements. They'll play 2 today----weather permitting---, but the two teams will see each other in New Jersey again later this season to make up the other games.
=======================================
The Atlanta Hawks are a game away from advancing to the second round of the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs after beating the Knicks, 113-96, on Sunday afternoon. Kevin Huerter (Shen/Maryland) contributed 11 points off the bench in the win. A win on Wednesday wraps up the series, and, assuming top seeded Philadelphia advances, they'll be next up for the Hawks.
========================================
Mother Nature wasn't kind to the Mets & Atlanta Braves, either, as Sunday's game was postponed due to rain. That game will be made up on Monday, July 26, as part of a single admission doubleheader. The rainout on Friday will be made up three weeks from tonight as part of another single admission double-dip, with each game going seven innings. The Mets then travel to Atlanta the following week. Shen grad Ian Anderson will get more chances to avenge himself on the unlikely NL Least leaders, after getting knocked out in the 5th inning on Saturday night, only to watch the bullpen take a siesta, as the Mets scored nine runs off the Braves' pen.

News & notes

 It hasn't taken Tom Gostowski long to find another broadcasting gig.

Formerly one half of Levack & Goz on WTMM, Goslowski now is the color analyst for the National Arena League, partnered with another 518 veteran in Andrew Santillo, who has done some sportscasting in addition to a stint with The Record/Saratogian some years back. The two got their trial by fire on Saturday night, calling the Albany Empire's home opener against Columbus on YouTube:

Albany, predictably, starts 1-0 after the 65-60 win. Next home game is in two weeks, as they'll be in New Jersey next week.
====================================
Meanwhile, the Tri-City Valleycats and Sussex County Miners were rained out for a 2nd straight day, so they'll try the double-header again today, with the first game at 2 pm. The rains finally let up in the tri-state area in the early evening, but too late for the 'Cats & Miners.
=====================================
Ian Anderson's second visit to Citi Field was worse than his first.

The 2nd year Atlanta Braves pitcher lasted just four innings-plus Saturday night in a 13-2 loss to the Mets. Keep in mind this is not the same front-line Mets team that beat Anderson 8 months ago, but a team cobbled together because of injuries. After Anderson left in the fifth inning, the Mets abused the Atlanta bullpen, scoring seven runs in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, to put the game away.

Anderson's final line: Four innings-plus, four runs, seven hits, six strikeouts, a hit batsman, and a walk.

They'll meet again later this summer. For the Braves, though, it only gets worse. They have 2-time Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom waiting for them tonight.
========================================
With three games remaining, Troy High's lacrosse team has the feel of a team tanking the season.

In the mud in Averill Park on Saturday, Troy (0-10, 0-8 Suburban Council) was shut out yet again, 19-0, by the Warriors. I'm not so sure they've actually scored a goal this season. Troy will have Senior Day Tuesday vs. CBA before back-to-back road games Thursday & Friday at Saratoga & Shenendehowa. A home game vs. Colonie, suspended due to equipment issues, may or may not be made up, as it is not listed on Schedule Galaxy. I can only guess the problem. No cohesion on either offense or defense, and, at this point, it seems the team is there physically, but mentally, not so much.

News & notes

 The Tri-City Valleycats were among several teams, including high school and other pro squads, to have a game rained out on Friday. Now, weather permitting, of course, the 'Cats will play a double-header at Sussex County (New Jersey) this afternoon, with the first game at 2 pm.

====================================
Kevin Huerter came off the bench to contribute 10 points, as Atlanta defeated the Knicks, 105-94, to take a 2-1 lead in games in their best of 7 1st round series.

Game 4 is Sunday.
====================================
Rain also washed out softball & baseball games between territorial rivals Troy & Averill Park on Friday. They'll try again today at 1 pm. That forces Troy to cancel a non-league softball game vs. Cohoes, which was set for 10 am, as league schedule takes priority.

Update, 9:44 am.: Averill Park has announced that the baseball & softball games have been postponed again. The boys will try again on Tuesday, and the women on Thursday. The lacrosse game between AP & Troy is still on for 11 am. The tennis match between the two schools was moved up and played on Thursday, with AP posting an 8-0 shutout.

However, not everyone was rained out.

LaSalle's Liam Manlon nearly had a triple hat trick, as he scored 8 goals to the lead the Cadets to a 24-0 drubbing of Schenectady-Mohonasen in a non-league lacrosse match on Friday.

In other lacrosse action:

On the men's side, Saratoga routed Colonie, 10-1, in a Suburban Council game. In women's action, Schuylerville clipped Scotia-Glenville, 14-12, in the Foothills Council.

In baseball:

Saratoga Catholic swept a doubleheader from Cambridge, taking the first game, 10-4, then blew out Cambridge in the nightcap, 21-4. That game was called after 5 innings due to the mercy rule. The Saints scored 11 runs in the 1st, and 10 in the 4th.

The Academy of Holy Names had two games. On Thursday, they blew out Cobleskill-Richmondville, 13-3, then smacked down Albany Academy, 10-5, on Friday. Cobleskill-Richmondville then fell victim to the mercy rule on Friday, absorbing a 19-1 pounding in 5 innings against Cohoes. The Tigers also won over Cobleskill-Richmondville in baseball, 10-1.
==============================================
UAlbany's baseball season is over, as the Great Danes were eliminated by Stony Brook, 3-2. The Seawolves have 30 wins on the season, while Jon Mueller's club finishes 22-25.
==============================================
Rain also wiped out Albany Twilight League action on Friday. Hate to break it to y'all, but the wet stuff is going to be sticking around for a while, making it difficult for Section II to finish its regular seasons in baseball, softball, & tennis.

News & notes

 Albany Academy thought they'd run the table in the Colonial Council this season.

LaSalle had other ideas.

The spring edition of the Battle of The Cadets was not the high scoring affair one might've expected of the top two teams in the league, as Academy suffered its first loss of the season, 7-1. LaSalle (9-2) is building momentum heading into the sectionals, which begin in about a week and a half.
===================================
The Tri-City Valleycats' 1st regular season game in the Frontier League followed a familiar script Thursday night in New Jersey.

Down 1-0 to Sussex County in the top of the 9th, the 'Cats plated two runs, then shut down the Miners in the bottom half to pick up a 2-1 win.

Trust me, the joint will be jumpin' next Friday night for the home opener at Bruno Stadium against the New Jersey Jackals.
========================================
Troy High snapped a 3 game losing streak in baseball, toppling Bethlehem by a 2-1 score. Chris Strack's club (7-4) visits Averill Park today---weather permitting, of course-----before returning home for Senior Day Wednesday vs. CBA. They'll close at Saratoga one week from tonight. Yep, it's a 7 pm game which will have trouble drawing even parents, since it's running opposite the Valleycats' home opener. As noted, the sectionals begin the week of June 7. Troy will be part of a star studded Class A field that also includes LaSalle, Averill Park, & Burnt Hills.

Bethlehem, on the other hand, dismantled Troy's hapless lacrosse squad, 20-0. Not all of the games have been reported to the press, as we've stressed, but Troy (0-9, 0-7 Suburban Council) could set a record for futility this season. Not so much the won-loss record, that's a given, but the fact that they haven't scored a goal this season. At all. And four games remain.

I wonder if they're handing out paper bags for anyone showing up at Picken Field.
====================================
Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson (4-1) will be on the mound for Atlanta vs. the Mets tonight. The game will be shown locally on WRGB, with a 7:10 first pitch. Anderson lost his only other start against New York last September, also at Citi Field.

Update, 5:02 pm.: Tonight's Mets-Braves game has been postponed due to rain in Flushing. No make-up date has been set as yet. Today's Troy-Avertill Park baseball & softball games have also been postponed, and will be played tomorrow at 1 pm. That forces Troy to postpone a non-league softball game vs. Cohoes, as league schedule takes precedence. With Troy traveling to Cohoes on Wednesday, a double-header now seems likely on the road.

Thursday, May 27, 2021

News & notes

 Congratulations to UAlbany baseball coach Jon Mueller, named America East Coach of The Year ahead of the league's tournament, which begins today at Stony Brook.

Mueller, a high school star at Stillwater, led the Great Danes to a division title this season.

The Danes, however, may be without Averill Park grad Anthony Germinerio, who was injured and removed after throwing just one pitch vs. Maine on May 21. Time will tell.
======================================
The Knicks evened their best of 7 NBA 1st round series vs. Atlanta on Wednesday with a 101-92 win. Atlanta's Kevin Huerter (Shenendehowa) came off the bench to score 10 points in a losing effort for the Hawks.

Games 3-4 will be in Atlanta, so Huerter will likely miss seeing his pal Ian Anderson pitch for the Braves on Friday vs. the Mets.
========================================
The other day, the question was asked if Troy High's baseball team had peaked.

The same might now be said of the softball team.

Sean Geisel's club has been shut out in 2 straight games, the latest a 12-0, 5 inning shellacking at the hands of Bethlehem on Wednesday. Troy falls to 6-5 in the Suburban Council (7-5 overall), and need to regroup quickly before visiting Averill Park on Friday (weather permitting) before coming home to start what is now a home & home series with Cohoes. They'll play Saturday morning at 10, with the return match now set for Cohoes next Wednesday. Otherwise, the Lady Horses will close the season at Saratoga on June 4.

Bethlehem also defeated Troy in tennis (9-0, naturally). The baseball game was postponed to today due to inclement weather, and the two schools will also meet in lacrosse tonight.

News & notes

 Despite the lifting of mask mandates in much of the country, COVID-19 remains a problem, such that the Albany Empire will not be facing Ontario (California) on Saturday. The Ontario franchise has opted out of the 2021 season

Instead, Albany will host the Columbus Lions. Game time remains 7 pm. Tickets start at $15.

However, there are concerns about whether or not the Empire will be able to continue beyond this season. Stay tuned.
=======================================
Kevin Huerter came off the bench and scored 8 points, while Trae Young, the Atlanta Hawks' new superstar, led all scorers with 32 points, as the Hawks clipped the Knicks, 107-105, on Sunday in the first game of their NBA Eastern Conference playoff series.

Game 2 will be Wednesday night.
=======================================
Those of us who are long time sports fans know that it's never a good idea to take a weaker team lightly.

Troy High's softball team found that out the hard way on Monday, as their three game winning streak came to an end in a 2-0 loss to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Troy (7-4 overall, 6-4 Suburban Council) has to regroup quickly, since they'll play Bethlehem, one of the leaders in the Suburban Council Blue division, on Wednesday. The linescores for both the softball & baseball games were not submitted to the press. We obtained the result from the Spartans' Twitter page.

Burnt Hills also beat Troy in tennis (9-0), keeping the Flying Horses winless on the court, and extended Troy's baseball losing streak to three in a row and four of the last five with a 5-4 win, walking off the visitors in the bottom of the 7th. Troy baseball's record is now 6-4, while the tennis team is at 0-9.

The two schools meet in lacrosse tonight.

News & notes

 The Albany Empire announced on Friday that the team will host a vaccination pod at Times-Union Center prior to next week's home opener. Fans who are given the 1-dose Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine will receive free tickets for the team's next home game two weeks later (June 12). Now, if that isn't an incentive, I don't know what is.
====================================
Has Troy High's baseball team peaked?

Chris Strack's club has lost three of their last four, and the last two in a row, after a 4-2 home loss to Columbia on Saturday. Austin Francis was undone by his defense, which gave up two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Francis went five, gave up one earned run, and struck out six for Troy (6-3).

In sharp contrast, the softball team has won three straight, riding the arm of Olivia DeCitise, who pitched another complete game Saturday, beating Columbia, 5-1. DeCitise scattered four hits while striking out eight in hurling another gem.

Predictably, the lacrosse & tennis results were not reported, or not included in today's newspapers due to space limitations.

This week's Troy schedule sees the baseball & softball teams on a three game road trip:

Monday: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
Wednesday: @ Bethlehem.
Friday: @ Averill Park.

The softball team returns home for a 10 am matinee Saturday vs. Cohoes, now a single game instead of a double-header. The JV's will play their game on the adjoining diamond, a rare case of the varsity & JV's playing at home on the same day.

The tennis team will also have that same three meet road trip, hoping to finally win a set, if not a match. The lacrosse team's road trip will be a day behind. In other words, their games are Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday.
======================================
Watching Mets-Marlins on CW15 on Saturday, we noted that unlike in 2019, WCWN is not airing the Mets' WPIX-produced pre-game show, sponsored by Spectrum Cable, preferring instead to run infomercials in order to make some extra money for the station. I wonder how many Mets fans have complained to station management.

News & notes

 The other shoe has dropped at WTMM (104.5-The Team).

Afternoon co-host Jeff Levack is leaving after the May 28 broadcast to take a job in another venue, but he will remain with WTMM for special projects. Former UAlbany AD Charlie Voelker will take over on June 1, partnered with another new arrival, Dan Dahl. Voelker is currently working Sundays for WTMM.

Levack had been going it mostly alone after former on-air partner Tom Gostowski was fired in January.
=================================
Shenendehowa grad Kevin Huerter made his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks at Madison Square Garden. On Sunday, he plays his first playoff game at the Mecca of Sports & Entertainment, when the Hawks visit the Knicks. who swept the season series between the two clubs, 3-0.

Just don't be too surprised to see some fans in Shen green and/or Atlanta red on Sunday.
=================================
Shen's other gift to Atlanta, Braves pitcher Ian Anderson, got the start vs. Pittsburgh on Friday, and there was no shortage of run support for Anderson (4-1), as the Braves steamrolled the Pirates, 20-1. Ian's been on the plus side of a few blowouts with Shen, so he knows the feeling.

Anderson went six innings of shutout ball, scattering six hits while striking out six. Check the highlight reel:

Anderson's next start is projected to be next weekend at Citi Field vs. the Mets.
=================================
It's only been three weeks since Section II's "Fall II" football season ended, but now they're rolling out the Fall 2021 schedule. Classes AA, A, & B will play 8 game schedules this season, and in the case of Class A, the top four teams, top two in each division, will advance to the playoffs.

Courtesy of the Daily Gazette, we were able to obtain the schedules for LaSalle & Troy High, and, yes, they'll meet again for the Collar City Cup.

LaSalle:

Week 1: @ Schenectady (non-conference).
Week 2: Home opener vs. Ballston Spa.
Week 3: @ Albany.
Week 4: @ Columbia.
Week 5: Queensbury.
Week 6: Averill Park.
Week 7: Senior Night vs. Amsterdam.
Week 8: Collar City Cup @ Troy.

Troy High:

Week 1: Home opener vs. Guilderland (non-conference).
Week 2: @ Burnt Hills. Matt Shell's club will be looking for revenge after the 50-3 beatdown Troy administered three weeks ago.

Week 3: @ Averill Park.
Week 4: Albany.
Week 5: Homecoming vs. South Glens Falls.
Week 6: @Amsterdam.
Week 7: @ Columbia.
Week 8: Senior Night vs. LaSalle.
====================================
Troy might want to plumb the alumni archives to find a tennis coach.

The Flying Horses are now 0-7 on the court after a shutout loss to Niskayuna Friday afternoon, but they have to get right back out there this morning vs. Columbia for a Saturday brunch special. Troy tennis hasn't won a set in men's action so far this season, a far, far cry from the halcyon days of their dominating the Big 10.

Niskayuna also defeated Troy in baseball, 7-4. Tanner Wood picked up the win in relief for Nisky, pitching the final four innings, allowing only 2 unearned runs, giving the Silver Warriors a chance to catch up, and they would, plating 4 runs in the 6th inning to win the game. Troy drops to 6-2.

However, Nisky didn't have any answers for softball ace Olivia DeCitise, who pitched her second straight complete game, scattering four hits while striking out nine, as Sean Geisel's club (6-3) defeated the Lady Warriors, 4-0.

Troy will have both diamonds, the tennis court, and Picken Field (lacrosse) running this morning vs. Columbia.

News & notes

 Congratulations to Fort Plain baseball coach Craig Phillips, who won his 800th career game Tuesday as Fort Plain defeated Mayfield. The 800 wins include post-season victories, unlike in the pros, for example, where post-season wins are counted separately.
=========================================
When the Albany Empire open their season on May 29 at Times-Union Center, loosened restrictions will allow up to 4,000 vaccinated fans to attend. Tickets start at $15, but they're requiring you to buy a two-seat pod for social distancing purposes. Pods can be from 2-6 seats. In contrast, the Tri-City Valleycats, knowing a lot of fans travel as singles, will sell their pods in increments of 1-6 seats. That will avoid a lot of unnecessary drama at the box office, especially with the 'Cats' home opener on June 4.
========================================
The Albany Twilight League has begun its 2021 season. The Albany Athletics, who won a hybrid summer league title in a loop that merged the ATL with the Perfect Game Collegiate League last year, are 2-0 to start the season after blowing out Twin Town, 14-2, on Wednesday. There are only 7 teams in the league this season, but because the league usually has a 1-game-per-night schedule, it isn't as bad as you'd think.
========================================
Troy High's baseball & softball teams rebounded from losses to Ballston Spa on Monday by dispatching Shaker on the road on Wednesday.

For the baseball team (6-1), Mike Kennedy went the distance, struck out 14, and helped his own cause with a homer as Troy shut out the Bison, 2-0.

Similarly, Olivia DeCitise pitched a complete game for the softball team (5.-3, 4-3 Suburban Council). She went 4-5 at the plate with a double and 3 RBI as the Lady Horses blew away Shaker, 13-5.

Shaker, though, swept a tennis meet vs. Troy, 9-0. Troy has not won a set on the court yet this season, and are now 0-6. Troy's home lacrosse match vs. Niskayuna was not reported, and we're thinking space considerations with the local papers may be the reason it isn't showing up on their scoreboards.
======================================
LaSalle's baseball team suffered its first Colonial Council loss Wednesday, 15-9, to Voorheesville, dropping the Cadets to 7-1 on the season. Meanwhile, Albany Academy remains undefeated, and needed only 6 innings in a 19-0 drubbing of Cohoes.

Lacrosse's Bad News Bears of 2021

 We've noted previously that lacrosse wasn't added to Troy High's athletic program until sometime in the mid-to-late 1980's. They don't offer the sport for women, since their interests in the spring usually mean softball and track & field.

So far in 2021, Troy lacrosse is a team in search of a goal. That is, scoring.

With four games completed, and heading into a road match vs. Shaker today, the Troy laxmen have been shut out in all four. A home game vs. Colonie last week was suspended due to equipment issues, according to AD Paul Reinisch. We told you how Amsterdam outscored Troy, 27-0 in a 2 game sweep on May 7 & 10, but it's gotten worse since then. Guilderland touched up the Flying Horses for three touchdowns, three extra points, and a safety in a 23-0 drubbing one week ago. Last night, under the lights at Picken Field, Ballston Spa rang up 25 goals.

Troy has been outscored 75-0 in those four games, and it figures to be even worse---maybe---vs. the Blue Bison today. On average, Troy has given up 18.3 goals per game. For as much as the Class A football champs put up some ridiculous numbers this spring, the lacrosse team is their diametric opposite. Lacrosse's answer to the Bad News Bears.

I wonder what it would take to bring in actor Brandon Routh (ex-Legends of Tomorrow), who starred in and produced the 2011 movie, "Broken Arrows", to give these kids some words of wisdom and encouragement. Will Troy actually score a goal this season? I think they may be starting a betting pool.

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

News & notes

 Ever since leaving Troy High to take the baseball coach's job at Ballston Spa, Curtis Nobles has had the Flying Horses' number.

That was apparent again Monday, as the Scotties rallied from behind to end Troy's season opening five game winning streak, 7-6. However, if you're looking for a box or line score on the game, it won't be in the Albany Times-Union. The game result was not submitted to the paper.

Ballston Spa also defeated Troy in tennis, 9-0 (Troy remains winless at 0-5), and in softball, 6-5. Olivia DeCitise started for Troy, going six innings, striking out six while giving up three runs, but the bullpen blew the game, as the Lady Scotties, like the guys, rallied late with three runs in the seventh inning.

Troy (3-3) will play Shaker tomorrow.

Troy football/track coach Bob "The Builder" Burns has garnered some unexpected attention from Christian Brothers Academy, according to James Allen of the Times-Union. Burns was mentioned after CBA parted company with Joe Burke after 11 seasons. What did Burke in, like a lot of college and/or pro coaches, was a lack of success in the post-season. The Brothers have won just one playoff game since 2015.

Burns just finished his sixth season as Troy football coach, and has the highest winning percentage of active coaches in Section II, compiling a ridiculous 58-4 ledger from 2015-spring 2021.

I honestly think Burns isn't going anywhere.
===============================
The Tri-City Valleycats have some work to do after losing a pre-season game Monday, 8-6. Sunday's game was not reported, as the Times-Union's method is to do profile pieces on players & coaches rather than do full game reports. The season opens in nine days.
================================
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert won't be at Saratoga when the meet starts in July, as of right now.

Baffert has been banned from NY Racing Association tracks in the wake of a doping scandal that could still cost Medina Spirit the Kentucky Derby. Medina Spirit won't be running at Saratoga, either, a decision NYRA made for the sake of the industry.

Meanwhile, Linda Rice has had her license revoked for three years after committing what amounts to insider trading in horse racing, obtaining information that would help her decide which of her horses would run in certain races. This will last up to about 2024.
=================================
Shenendehowa alumni will descend upon New York again next week, and there's every reason to believe, depending on scheduling, that their two most famous (for now) alums will be playing on the same night.

Braves pitcher Ian Anderson is likely to see the mound at Citi Field vs. the Mets, while Kevin Huerter and the Atlanta Hawks will play the Knicks in the first round of the NBA's Eastern Conference playoffs. Last month, Anderson beat the Yankees in the Bronx, but the Knicks completed a season sweep of the Hawks.

Dates for the Knicks-Hawks series have not yet been announced, nor which network will carry the games. Stay tuned.

Sunday, May 16, 2021

News & notes

 Ian Anderson might not have been as dominant as usual, but the Shen grad picked up his 3rd win of the season for Atlanta Saturday night, allowing a run on two hits, while striking out four and walking four over six innings, as the Braves beat Milwaukee, 5-1. Anderson lowered his season ERA to 3.20 in the win. Unfortunately for Mets & Shen fans, Anderson as of now will not face the Mets this week in Atlanta, as his turn would come up again after the series ends on Wednesday.

The return match at Citi Field, though, may be another story, as I think he'll be pitching in Flushing. Stay tuned.
========================================
Troy High was scheduled to compete in a multi-school track meet at Guilderland on Saturday, but there's no record of any Troy runners having competed. It was a mini-invitational, and it seems there might've been a communication issue leading to Troy either pulling out, or they were not invited after all.

A men's tennis meet at Albany was postponed to June 1 at the last minute. Also, the softball doubleheader vs. Cohoes has been rescheduled for Saturday, May 29, with the first game set for 10 am. After what happened at the College of St. Rose on Saturday vs. Albany, if I'm on the Cohoes coaching staff, I'd have reason to worry.

That would be because Sean Geisel's club blew away the Lady Falcons, 14-2. Jody Rogers pitched a complete game and struck out six. Olivia DeCitise went 3-5, all three hits for extra bases (2 doubles and a triple), good for 3 RBI's for Troy (3-2, 2-2 Suburban Council).

Chris Strack's Troy baseball team remains unbeaten, as they also routed the Falcons, 15-3. Due to some editing errors at the Albany Times-Union, the linescores of the two games look almost exactly the same, as it looks like the T-U transposed the softball linescore on the baseball one in error. Troy (5-0) sits atop the Gray division of the Suburban Council.

This week's baseball/softball schedule:

Monday: Ballston Spa.
Wednesday: @ Shaker.
Friday: Niskayuna.
Saturday: Columbia.
================================
As I write these words, the Tri-City Valleycats are playing the first of two exhibition games at Bruno Stadium vs. Equipe Quebec. The 2nd game of the series will be tomorrow night at 6 pm. With the Frontier League season to start in a week and a half, the 'Cats are using this to introduce themselves to the fan base, but for the fact there was no advance notice until this morning.

We should have results of today's game tomorrow.

News & notes

 I've heard of keeping it in the family, but this gets the grand prize.

Weeks after welcoming back Jim Jabir as their new women's head basketball coach, Siena College decided to bring Jabir's wife, Angie, as senior associate athletic director & senior women's administrator. She'll work under long time AD John D'Argenio, who stressed at a Friday presser that Angie will not be her husband's supervisor.

Meanwhile, the men's team is getting some help, with Michael Tertsea transferring from Division II Gannon to join the Saints next season.
==================================
Mechanicville native Chad Brown has two horses entered in tonight's Preakness Stakes. Post time is at 6:50 pm (NBC, OTB-TV). Brown was denied the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, but everyone would be happy if Derby winner Medina Spirit was denied this time. Trainer Bob Baffert is not in Baltimore, in order to avoid unnecessary distractions after being suspended from Churchill Downs in the wake of his horse's failed drug test following the Derby.
===================================
Troy High's Alex Wolfe was named Class A football Player of the Year, while teammates Xavier Leigh & Jaylen Riggins were named offensive & defensive players of the year, respectively, as Section II announced its all-star teams on Friday.

Speaking of the all-stars:

1st team:

Offensive line:

Tyler Spink & Nick Marchese (Averill Park), Deandre Butler & Robert Gapp (Troy), Alex Simon (Amsterdam).
Tight End: Angelo Cioffi (Columbia).
Wide Receiver: Nasir Dawud-Soto (Troy), Brady Fenton (LaSalle), David Romer (Columbia), Josiah Newborn (Amsterdam).
Running Back: Dan McShane (Averill Park), Bo Catherwood (LaSalle), Michael Bennett (Columbia).
Quarterback: Eddie Yamin (LaSalle).
Punter: Aiden Laurange (Columbia).
Kicker: Phil "Pip" Ryan (Troy).

Defensive line:

Blessing Jackson (LaSalle), Jaeshon Brown (Troy), Christian Roberson (Amsterdam).
Defensive End: Nick Clementi (Averill Park), Dan Amasha (LaSalle).
Inside Linebacker: Tyrell Penalba (Troy), Olin Wagner (Averill Park), Ed McDonough (LaSalle).
Outside Linebacker: Avvon Smith & Ryan Lefebvre (Troy).
Defensive Back: Ben Ferlito (Averill Park), Elias Daniels (Troy), Nassir Young & Damani Canty (LaSalle), Xavier Acevedo (Amsterdam).
All-Purpose: Gavin Giordano (Averill Park).
=================================
Troy continues to roll merrily along in baseball & softball.

Chris Strack's baseball squad remains undefeated headed into today's brunch matinee at the College of St. Rose vs. Albany, trimming Guilderland, 1-0. Unfortunately, in part due to space considerations, the result was not published in today's newspapers. Sean Geisel's softball team got back to .500 with a 7-2 win over the Lady Dutch (2-2). Alyssa Sano went 3-3, including a 2 run homer, to lead the Lady Horses.

Guilderland salvaged the day by keeping Troy's men's tennis team winless with a 9-0 shutout. Troy is 0-4 on the court.

News & notes

 The women's revolution, if you will, in high school golf, has produced some major dividends for Section II.

The Albany Times-Union's Pete Dougherty reports today that the 2022 state championships will be held at MacGregor Country Club in Saratoga, while the 2023 & 2024 events will be a ways down the road at Edison Country Club in Rexford, meaning in both cases that the Suburban Council would host the events.

All well & good, but the Saratoga County clubs shouldn't be the only ones. What about Troy Country Club? Shaker Ridge? Wolfert's Roost? Normanside?

I think you're seeing a theme here. Seems as though Section II suits think Saratoga County is the hub of high school sports in their district. Just sayin'.

===========================================
Not a good night for Shaker grad Jeff Hoffman Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. The Reds pitcher lasted just 4 innings in a 7-2 loss to the Pirates, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, walking 2, and striking out 4. He's not doing too badly at the plate, either, this season, though he went 0-1 in the game to drop his average to .250 for the season.

His season record, however, falls, to 2-3.

News & notes

 Shenendehowa grad Ian Anderson took the hill Saturday night for Atlanta against the Philadelphia Phillies. This was the 3rd time already this season Anderson has pitched against the Phils, and so Joe Girardi's club was ready for him. Jean Segura, fresh off the injured list, opened the game with a solo home run, and Philadelphia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.

Anderson went six innings, giving up all three runs while striking out seven and walking three. His season ERA is now at nearly 3 1/2 runs a game (3.46). Luckily for him, Atlanta came storming back, and it took 12 innings before the Braves defeated Philadelphia, 7-4.
========================================
Due to early deadlines or general disinterest by certain schools, not all of yesterday's scores were published in today's newspapers, or reported to local television outlets and websites.

Case in point, Troy High's road tennis meet at Saratoga and a home baseball game, the latter the nightcap of a Saturday matinee doubleheader vs. Schenectady, were not reported. We can pretty much guess how things turned out, but we'd rather have that information to pass it along to our readers.

That said, let's get to the Saturday scoreboard:

Baseball:

Foothills Council:

South Glens Falls 2, Glens Falls 1.
Broadalbin-Perth 10, Queensbury 2.
South Glens Falls 10, Gloversville 3.

We are not sure which SGFHS game took place Saturday, and which one was on Friday.

Suburban Council:

Shenendehowa 17, Albany 0. The Plainsmen bounce back from a Friday loss to Troy to go to 1-1 on the season.

Columbia swept a doubleheader from Averill Park, 17-2 & 16-0. Ouch!
Guilderland 4, Saratoga 1.
CBA swept a doubleheader from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 7-1 & 4-1.
Edit, 5/10/21: Per Troy AD Paul Reinisch, Troy goes to 2-0, beating Schenectady, 8-4.

Western Athletic Conference:

Galway 24, Northville 0 (5 innings).
Canajoharie 10, Middleburgh 0 (6).

Wasaren:

Mechanicville 11, Stillwater 0.
Greenwich 23, Stillwater 8. We're assuming Stillwater played on Friday & Saturday.

Men's lacrosse:

Foothills Council:

Glens Falls 16, Scotia-Glenville 5.

Suburban Council:

Columbia 19, Averill Park 2.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 17, CBA 4.
Ballston Spa 23, Colonie 2.
Guilderland 13, Saratoga 7.

Non-league:

Niskayuna 24, LaSalle 2.
Albany Academy 13, Princeton Day 0.
Edit, 5/10/21: Amsterdam 12, Troy 0.

Colonie 21, Ballston Spa 8.
Bethlehem 18, Shaker 3.
Saratoga 18, Guilderland 8.

Softball:

Suburban Council:

Shen 12, Albany 0 (5).
Shaker 1, Bethlehem 0.
Colonie 11, Ballston Spa 8.
Averill Park & Columbia split doubleheader. The Warriors, in Kevin Earl's 1st season as coach, won the 1st game, 7-2. The Lady Devils salvaged the nightcap, 6-5.

Troy 22, Schenectady 0 (5).

Wasaren:

Greenwich 5, Stillwater 4.

Men's tennis:

Suburban Council:

Shen 9, Albany 0.
Bethlehem 5, Shaker 4.
Edit, 5/10/21: Saratoga 9, Troy 0.
==========================================
UAlbany failed in both bids to capture lacrosse titles in the America East Conference. The women fell to in-state nemesis Stony Brook, 16-9, while Vermont bested the men, 15-10.

UAlbany's softball team swept a doubleheader from Maine, 8-3 & 2-0. The Great Danes' baseball team split a doubleheader with Hartford. Albany won the opener 3-2, then lost the 2nd game, 4-0. Similarly, Siena split a double-dip with Rider, winning the opener, 3-0, before the Broncs salvaged the second game, 1-0.

High school Fridays: Friday's scoreboard, 5/7

 Anytime a Troy High team beats Shenendehowa in anything, it's news.

So imagine the surprise washing over ye scribe upon seeing that Troy's baseball team opened their season with a 4-1 upset of the Plainsmen. Some websites, such as GameChanger, have not yet been updated for 2021, which will cause some confusion.

On the other hand, Shen shut out Troy in men's tennis, 9-0. Nothing new for Troy (0-1), which is finding meet wins hard to come by in the Suburban Council, and have since entering the league in 2015-16. Shen also defeated Troy in softball, 3-2, which leaves Sean Geisel's club at 1-1 after 2 games.

Today, the Lady Horses are right back at it vs. Schenectady. However, a Mother's Day double-dip vs. Cohoes has been cancelled, wiped off the Troy page at Schedule Galaxy. The only explanation ye scribe can think of is anticipation of rain on Sunday. Doesn't look like they'll reschedule.

Troy's home opener in lacrosse vs. Amsterdam was not reported as of press time.

News & notes

 The National Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga has announced the headliners of its 2021 induction class.

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and trainer Todd Pletcher are being inducted this year, the latter while still active, which unlike other sports Halls, doesn't preclude induction.
=======================================
Wednesday's rain played havoc with the high school sports schedule, as several events were postponed, or outright cancelled.

In Troy High's case, the men's tennis team had to postpone their season opener at Saratoga, no make up date set as yet. The women's outdoor track team was to open their season at Picken Field against Ballston Spa, but that was pushed back to today.

Speaking of track & field, the men's track team lost a dual meet against B-Spa & CBA on Tuesday, finishing last. Not a good start for coach Bob Burns, four days after his football team won the Class A title.

The lacrosse team will not be at Albany on May 15, as that game has been cancelled. Sounds to me like Albany can't field a team this year for lacrosse due to lack of available players.

As for why the Albany Times-Union still lists today's road lacrosse match vs. Shenendehowa, they have not received updated information. As we've previously noted, the game at Shen has been pushed back to June 4.

Monday's high school scoreboard, 5/3

 Since joining Troy High's bowling team a couple of years back, Olivia DeCitise has proven she can throw strikes.

So it makes sense that she's throwing strikes of a different kind as a pitcher for Troy's softball team, which opened the 2021 season Monday with a 1-0 win over city rival Catholic Central in a non-league game. Olivia had 15 K's on the day as she threw a complete game shutout. Catholic High's Skyler Wessels also went the distance, giving up a walk-off single by Emma Thompson in the home 7th.

Troy's season opening homestand resumes tomorrow, weather permitting, of course, with another non-league game against a former Big 10 opponent, this time Amsterdam, now in the Foothills Council.

For what it's worth, Monday's game was not listed on the Catholic Central page of the Colonial Council website. The JV game, as we've noted, was postponed, with no make-up date set. Troy will be home all week, playing five games in seven days overall, including yesterday.
