News & notes

 While there were a couple of tennis matches in Section II Tuesday, the diamond at Troy High was too frozen from two days of cold temperatures, such that Troy called off its softball game vs. Lansingburgh. No make-up date has been set, though the two teams are set to play at Lansingburgh next month. Troy is scheduled to host Mohonasen on Thursday, but rain, more specifically, thunderstorms are in the forecast, so we'll see.
==================================================
WNYT sports director Rodger Wyland revealed on his WTMM show on Tuesday that the unnamed player reportedly struck by UAlbany coach Dwayne Killings in November is guard Luke Fizulich, who has entered the transfer portal. The last thing Killings and/or UAlbany needs now is another turbulent off-season.

In other UAlbany news, the women's golf team placed 11th at the Georgia State Invitational on Tuesday. The lowest score for the Great Danes belonged to Amber Thornton, who finished 14th in individual competition.

News & notes

 Marcus Jackson is coming home.

The former Albany Academy star, who spent this past season at Cushing Academy, a prep school in Massachusetts, has committed to UAlbany for next season. The Great Danes could certainly use him, what with losing sophomore Luke Fizulich & senior Jamel Horton  to the transfer portal, while others, such as De'Vondre Perry, are graduating.

However, coach Dwayne Killings is being investigated for a November incident in which he had struck an unnamed player. The timing of the investigation being made public may seem a bit suspect four months after the incident took place, but at the time, UAlbany didn't want any distractions.

This bears watching.
=========================================
Monday's high school scoreboard:

Men's tennis:

Non-league:

Cobleskill-Richmondville 4, Schoharie 3.
Schalmont @ LaSalle was postponed. No reason given. No make-up date set.

A non-league lacrosse game between LaSalle & Valley Central was not reported.

Baseball (Saturday):

Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk 12, Peru 10.

News & notes

 The Albany Patroons will return to the scene of the crime next Sunday when they visit Lehigh Valley for the final time this season. All the Legends did in beating Albany two weeks ago in a high school gym that was not properly set for pro play was piss them off.

Since then, Albany has gotten back on the winning track, and, in the first game of a 2 game homestand, blew out the Pennsylvania Kings, 112-90, on Saturday. Anthony Moe didn't play (reason unknown), but A. J. Mosby led the Pats with 23 points, while Victor Nickerson added 22.

The Pats play London, Ontario at the Armory on Thursday before embarking on a road trip to Massachusetts & Lehigh Valley.
===================================
The Albany FireWolves led, 4-3, after the 1st period against the NY Riptide on Saturday, only to be outscored, 12-2, the rest of the way, as the Riptide defeated Albany, 15-6. Reilly O'Connor led Albany with 2 goals.

The 'Wolves head north of the border and to the west next Saturday when they visit Vancouver.
====================================
In football or even basketball, Notre Dame has name recognition and a global reputation. Their hockey team isn't quite as well known, even with frequent cable television appearances over the years.

And that name recognition wasn't enough to get people in the bleachers at MVP Arena on Saturday night. Between the Irish's game vs. Minnesota State airing on ESPNU and the Patroons at the Armory, you'd be hard pressed to justify going.

As it was, the Mavericks defeated Notre Dame, 1-0, to advance to the Frozen Four next week in Boston. Nathan Smith had the only goal, late in the 1st period, and the Mavericks' defense made it stand up.
=======================================
Saturday's local college scoreboard:

Men's lacrosse:

UAlbany 12, Stony Brook 10.
RPI 12, Skidmore 10.
Marist 11, Siena 10.

Union 14, Skidmore 12.
Siena 21, Iona 10.
UAlbany 15, Binghamton 11.
College of St. Rose 9, New Haven 8.
RPI 14, Utica 9.
Russell Sage 16, MCLA 1.

Softball:

Colgate & UAlbany split a pair, with the Red Raiders winning the opener, 2-1, and Albany taking the nightcap, 2-0.

George Mason 8, Siena 5.
Saint Rose swept a pair from Stonehill, 3-1 & 5-2.
RPI swept Castleton, 6-1 & 3-2.
Skidmore swept Utica, 9-8 & 13-2. The 2nd game ended after 5 innings (mercy rule).

Baseball:

New Jersey Institute of Technology 12, UAlbany 10.
Rochester swept RPI, 8-3 & 5-4.
Union swept Clarkson, 9-8 & 5-2.
Skidmore split with Ithaca. The Bombers won the opener, 5-3, but Skidmore took the nightcap, 3-2.
MCLA swept Russell Sage, 5-4 & 6-3.
College of St. Rose 7, Southern Connecticut State 6.

News & notes

 Tonight's NCAA hockey East Regional final between Notre Dame & Minnesota State, taking place at MVP Arena, has had its game time changed to 6:30 pm to accommodate ESPN, which has moved the game to ESPNU (Spectrum Cable channel 370). The actual puck drop probably won't be until about 6:35-6:40 (commercials, you know).

More than likely, however, local sports fans will head up the hill to the Washington Avenue Armory to see the Albany Patroons take on Pennsylvania after the Pats blew out Atlantic City, 114-85, in New Jersey on Friday. The Pats placed 7 players in double figures.

As for the Albany FireWolves, who are in New York City tonight to play the Riptide, their game will air on MSG (cable channel 318) at 7:30 pm.
===================================================
Catholic Central's final spring season as a Troy school got off to a less than stellar start on Friday.

The Crusaders, who will call Latham home next season, paid a visit to Troy High, and were bum-rushed by the Lady Horses, 14-4. Junior ace Olivia DeCitise pitched a complete game, giving up just 2 earned runs on five hits while striking out 13. DeCitise also went 3-5 at the plate to help her own cause. Olivia Ashline went 4-4 with a walk and a home run, scoring 3 times.

Troy hosts Lansingburgh on Tuesday, and Mohonasen on Thursday before league play begins.

The Colonial Council's tennis season has started in drips & drabs.

On Wednesday, LaSalle spanked Cobleskill-Richmondville, 7-1. A match against Voorheesville was postponed on Friday, with no make-up date set. No reason, other than the fact that the match was taken off LaSalle's page on the league's web site.

The only match reported on Friday saw Ichabod Crane defeat Schalmont, 5-2. The Sabres visit LaSalle on Monday.
============================================
Friday's local college scoreboard:

Baseball:

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) swept a doubleheader from UAlbany, winning the opener, 9-3, then the nightcap, 8-6.

Siena defeated St. Peter's, 8-1. The Saints are just 3-16, and have played the last few games without outfielder Brett Young (Albany Academy/Virginia Commonwealth), who may be out with an injury. Young got off to a fast start, despite Siena's overall struggles.

Men's lacrosse:

Union 13, St. Lawrence 10.
Hartwick 19, Russell Sage 9.
Cobleskill 12, Hudson 10.

Softball:

Siena swept a doubleheader from George Mason, 7-6 & 4-1, raising their record to 9-10 overall.

Women's tennis:

Skidmore 6, Bates College 3.

News & notes

 Space considerations are preventing the local papers from posting the schedule of today's high school sports events. After yesterday's rain, some games might not be played, so check with your schools to see if the games are being played after all.

Let me illustrate this another way. Troy High's softball team is scheduled to open the season with a 3 game non-league homestand, starting with Catholic Central, this afternoon. The game is listed on Schedule Galaxy, but not on the Crusaders' page on the Colonial Council website. In contrast, a game against Lansingburgh is on the Knights' page and on Schedule Galaxy.

Today's game, if it's played, coupled with a men's lacrosse game on April 2 at Picken Field, represent the final times we can say the Crusaders & Flying Horses would play for "bragging rights" to the city, as Catholic Central is relocating to Latham after the season.
============================================
MVP Arena is hosting the NCAA hockey regionals this week, with the semifinals having taken place last night. Games are airing on ESPN2 (Spectrum Cable channel 301).

Based on what's been reported, it seems local sports fans are more interested in the basketball tournament or pre-season baseball, as the crowd at the arena was rather small.

Notre Dame needed overtime to beat North Dakota, 2-1, while Minnesota State ousted Harvard, 4-3, which ends the ECAC's chances of winning a national title. The Mavericks & Fighting Irish will meet Saturday afternoon at 4 pm.
===============================================
Thursday's local college scoreboard:

Baseball:

Cobleskill 10, Wooster 3.
Hudson Valley 4, Ulster 3. The Vikings are 2-8 on the young season.

Softball:

Siena 23, Delaware State 2 (5 innings).
RPI 8, Oneonta 3 (1st game).
Oneonta 10, RPI 1 (2nd game-6 innings).

B'ing champions

 All that was missing from Sunday's state finals in Class B for the men & women were local stations committing to carrying the games.

CBS6 (WRGB)? Fuhgeddaboutit. They had the manufactured drama of the NCAA's. ABC10 (WTEN)? Nope. NBA and/or NHL on the schedule.

The point being, when you have some of the top teams in Section II playing for state titles, it wouldn't hurt to give them some love besides the usual highlight reels on the 6 & 11 pm news.

You had two teams, both from the Colonial Council, playing for state titles on Sunday, packing more drama than the NCAA could dream of.

Start with the women at Hudson Valley Community College. Less than 24 hours after Averill Park claimed the A title, Schalmont won their first-ever state title in Class B, holding off Waterloo, 56-54. Tournament MVP Payton Graber had 20 points, and Karissa Antoine added 17 to lead the Sabres. The box score appearing in today's papers is incorrect, giving some players more points than had actually earned. Editing errors, you know.

A few hours later in Glens Falls, Ichabod Crane completed the sweep for Section II and the Colonial Council in beating Friends Academy from Section VIII, 63-62. Brett Richards led the way for the Riders with 19 points, and was named tournament MVP. Again, the box score in the paper is incorrect.

Congratulations to both Ichabod Crane & Schalmont. Next season will be filed under "tough act to follow".

News & notes

 Maybe the Albany FireWolves should consider trading for Lyle Thompson before next season.

The former UAlbany star was a big reason the Georgia Swarm took the rubber match in the season series between the two teams, 15-12, Saturday night at MVP Arena. Thompson scored five goals, all in the second half, and had four assists to lead the Swarm, as the 'Wolves collapsed again late, falling to 5th place in the East division of the National Lacrosse League, with Georgia 1 1/2 games ahead of them.
==========================================
Section II has one state title, and will play for two more today.

Averill Park captured the Class A women's championship at Hudson Valley Community College, the site of so many sectional titles the last few years, by beating Tappan Zee, 54-48. Senior star Amelia Wood wrapped up her varsity career with a double-double, 20 points & 20 rebounds, and was named tournament MVP.

Today, Schalmont will play for the B title, as they'll take on Waterloo. Tip time at HVCC is 11:45 am. The Lady Sabres got 20 points from Payton Graber to lead them to a 52-42 victory over General Brown.

Meanwhile, Duanesburg was eliminated by Newark Valley, 68-40. Madison Meyer led the Lady Eagles with just 12 points, a shocking end to a dream season.

On the men's side, Ichabod Crane will look for a sweep of the B titles as they take on Friends Academy today at 3 pm at Cool Insuring Arena. The Riders got there by beating Alleghany-Limestone, 53-43. Brett Richards had 19 points, and Alex Schmidt added 17 to lead the way for Ichabod Crane.

Duanesburg's loss was a bad omen for the other Section II Eagles, the boys from Green Tech.

The Class AA champions let a 11 point halftime lead disappear, as Mount Vernon outscored them, 41-20, in the second half to take a 55-45 victory. Dayshaun Walton had 20 points, and Zaveon Little added 11, for the Eagles. All of Green Tech's losses this season have come outside the environs of Section II, which means next season's team has a tough act to follow.

Class C champion Stillwater ran out of gas as well, losing to Newfield, 87-52. The Warriors were held to just 8 points in the second quarter, leaving them trailing Newfield, 34-26, at the break. Jaxon Mueller, son of former Stillwater star and current UAlbany baseball coach Jon Mueller, had 18 points to lead the Warriors.
==============================================
In Jon Mueller's absence, UAlbany defeated UMBC for the 2nd straight day, 11-9. The Great Danes are 11-5 on the young season while the Greyhounds are at 7-11.

In other action:

College baseball:

Maryland swept Siena, 14-9 and 7-0. Ben Seiler (Albany Academy) was the hard luck loser in game 2. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Virginia Commonwealth) was given the day off.

Union College split a double header with Wisconsin-Superior, losing the opener, 4-3, then taking the nightcap, 6-3.

Skidmore split with Lasell, losing the opener, 8-1, then taking the nightcap, 15-3. Apparently, they only play 7 innings in the leagues like the Liberty League.

Men's lacrosse:

Binghamton 18, UAlbany 10.
RPI 22, Vassar 9.
Skidmore 24, Drew 4.
Bentley 18, College of St. Rose 5.
St. Joseph's 14, Russell Sage 8.

Women's lacrosse:

Siena 11, LaSalle 9.
Ithaca 22, RPI 10.
Skidmore 19, Bard 9.
Russell Sage 12, Castleton 10.
College of St. Rose 17, St. Thomas Aquinas 3.

Softball:

Union 8, Curry 0.
University of Chicago 7, Union 6.

News & notes

 Another night, another beatdown.

The Albany Patroons got back on the winning track Friday, blowing out Connecticut, 123-93. Anthony Moe led six Patroons in double figures with 26 points.

The Pats begin a 2 game road trip tomorrow, and will play their next home game one week from tonight. Oh, by the way, there will be a return trip to Lehigh Valley on April 3. For both teams' sake, the Legends should have the gym league-ready this time.
=================================================
UAlbany baseball coach Jon Mueller was not with the team when they defeated UMBC (University of Maryland-Baltimore County), 2-1, on Friday. Mueller chose to remain behind so he could see his son, Jaxon, played for his high school alma mater, Stillwater, in the state semi-finals. Mueller will likely rejoin the Great Danes on Sunday.
=================================================
Speaking of the state basketball tournaments, Section II is now down to six teams.

Class D women's champion Hartford dropped a 51-40 decision to Copenhagen, which plays for the state title in the nightcap of today's card at Hudson Valley Community College.

Men's Class D champion OESJ also fell, eliminated by Plattsburgh, 59-42. Owen Feagles led OESJ with 17 points.

The rest of Friday's basketball:

Men's Class C:

Stillwater 64, Salamanca 56. CJ McNeil led with 22 points, while Jaxon Mueller added 16. The Warriors will play Newfield later tonight.

Men's Class AA:

Green Tech 61, Jamestown 31. No box score was supplied to the press in time for publication. The Eagles will play Mount Vernon later tonight in the nightcap at Cool Insuring Arena.

Women's Class A:

Averill Park 56, West Babylon 36. Sean Organ's club hosts Tappan Zee this afternoon at HVCC. Taylor Holohan led the Warriors with 19 points.
===================================
Friday's college scoreboard:

NCAA Men's 1st round:

Purdue 76, Yale 56. August Mahoney (Albany Academy) had 8 points for the Bulldogs in a losing effort.

NCAA Women's 1st round:

Louisville 83, Albany 51. The Lady Danes, predictably, go one-&-done.

College baseball:

Stonehill 8, College of St. Rose 7 (game 1).
Stonehill 5, St. Rose 2 (game 2).
RPI 21, Russell Sage 1 (game 1).
RPI 14, Russell Sage 4 (game 2). Both games went 7 innings due to the mercy rule.

College softball:

Central 11, Skidmore 1 (1st game).
Skidmore 10, Central 0 (2nd game). Each game went 5 innings due to the mercy rule.

News & notes

 We told you that the Albany Patroons suffered their first loss of the season to Lehigh Valley on Sunday.

Four days later, coach-GM Will Brown wants that loss taken off the board. Not because the Legends themselves did anything wrong. Far from it. It has to do with the venue where the game was played.

A high school gym.

In an interview with Mark Singelais of the Albany Times-Union, appearing in today's editions after going online Thursday, Brown contends that the court was not properly configured according to The Basketball League's guidelines, shortening the 3 point arc, for example, and he intends to file a formal protest with the league.

What likely will kill the protest, in reality, is the simple fact that as we are in the middle of high school basketball's post-season here, so they are in Pennsylvania as well. A sectional or regional game might've been played within 24 hours of Sunday's game, and there might not have been enough time to properly prepare the gym for the game.

What Brown is looking for---and not likely to get---is for the result to be voided, making the game a no contest, to be rescheduled later in the season under proper conditions. With 44 teams in the league (!), these things are bound to happen.

The Patroons are back home to play Connecticut tonight. Pray for the Cobras.
==========================================
After yesterday's piece spotlighting various Section II alumni playing in the NCAA tournament, it was not a good day for four of them. Everyone knows by now, of course, that Iowa was upset by Richmond. Freshman Riley Mulvey (Albany Academy) did not play. Former teammate Kieran O'Hare didn't play, either, as Providence was also upset, by South Dakota State.

Andre Jackson had six points as Connecticut fell to New Mexico State. Isaiah Powell (Colonie) was held to just 2 points as Vermont lost to Arkansas in Powell's final college game.
=========================================
It's very discouraging to read that Siena's baseball team is off to a 2-12 start on the road. Home opener is not until right before Easter (weather permitting, of course). Have to believe the coaches are praying things will turn around before they come home.

518 Alumni watch

 Columbia High grad Kevin Smith got a searing dose of reality right before pre-season play begins.

Smith, called up by Toronto last season, was traded to Oakland earlier this week in exchange for veteran third baseman Matt Chapman as the A's are shedding salaries. WNYT's Rodger Wyland, writing in the Albany Times-Union today, thinks Smith could be starting at 3rd for Oakland as they open the season at Philadelphia.
======================================
Syracuse and Glens Falls grad Joseph Girard III are done for the season, but there's still plenty of 518 ties in the NCAA men's & women's tournaments.

As you know, UAlbany has a trio of Section II alums: Abby Ray (Saratoga), Grace Heeps (Columbia, by way of UMass), and Lilly Phillips (Cambridge).

The Lady Danes will play Louisville in Wichita, Kansas Friday at 6 pm, with the game to air on ESPNU (Spectrum channel 370).

Isaiah Powell (Colonie) is finishing his senior season at Vermont, and will be on the court as the Catamounts play Arkansas later tonight.

Andre Jackson (Albany Academy) could see Powell if the Catamounts win and UConn beats New Mexico State. as the Huskies would play Vermont on Saturday.

August Mahoney (Albany Academy) is a sophomore at Yale, which opens vs. Purdue on Friday.

Riley Mulvey (Albany Academy) is a freshman playing for former Siena coach Fran McCaffery at Iowa. The Hawkeyes play Richmond this afternoon.

Kieran O'Hare (Albany Academy), a freshman at Providence, should see some playing time when the Friars play South Dakota State today.

Sophie Phillips (Cambridge) is a freshman at Rhode Island, as the Lady Rams are playing in the Women's NIT.

News & notes

 Hockey season is over at RPI & Union College.

The Dutchmen were eliminated Saturday night, losing to Clarkson, 3-2, with the Knights sweeping the best of three series, 2-0.

Meanwhile, in Boston, RPI forced a 3rd game vs. Harvard with a 4-3 double overtime thriller on Saturday, but dropped the finale, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.
=====================================
The Albany Patroons suffered their first loss of the season Sunday, dropping a 97-89 decision to Lehigh Valley as the Legends gained a split of the weekend home & home series. Anthony Moe notched his 2nd straight double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds, leading four Pats in double figures.

Albany returns home on Friday to play Connecticut at the Armory.
=====================================
Sunday night, the UAlbany women's basketball team learned their seeding for the first round of the NCAA tournament. As usual, the championship committee did the Lady Danes no favors.

Colleen Mullen's club will travel to Wichita, Kansas on Friday to play the top seed in the region, Louisville. Yes, Albany's a #16 seed. Again. The bias against mid-major conferences within the committee, which gives too many spots to power 5 conferences to begin with, is so stale, bread mold wants to go on strike.

Pray for a miracle.
=====================================
When the weekend began, there were 10 Section II basketball teams vying for state titles.

This morning, that number is down to 8.

Section II did have some momentum after Averill Park routed Bishop Ludden on Saturday, but there were a couple of surprises.

Women's Class AA:

Cicero-North Syracuse went to overtime before ending Albany's season, 62-60. Shonyae Edmonds led three Falcons in double figures with 24 points in defeat.

Women's Class B:

Schalmont blew away Saranac, 54-30, to reach the state final four for the first time. No box score was submitted in time for publication this morning.

Women's Class C:

Duanesburg downed Northern Adirondack, 79-54. Duanesburg placed 4 players in double figures, led by Madison Meyer with 26 points.

Women's Class D:

Hartford tripped up Boquet Valley, 57-51. Karlee Nims led all scorers with 29 points.

Men's Class AA:

Green Tech needed overtime to defeat Liverpool for the 2nd time this season, 71-67. Dayshaun Walton led the Eagles with 22 points, while Victor Pharr had 17, and Zaveon Little added 16.

Men's Class A:

New Hartford got a lucky break on the last play of regulation to eliminate Mekeel Christian Academy, 49-47. A no-look hook shot by Connor Karowski found the basket at the buzzer to end the Lions' season.

Men's Class B:

Ichabod Crane blasted Plattsburgh, 75-31. Daniel Warner led the Riders with 23 points, and Brett Richards added 20.

Men's Class C:

Stillwater clipped Moriah, 55-52, in overtime.

Men's Class D:

OESJ defeated Seton Catholic, 57-47. Mason Snell shared game high honors with 18 points, matched by Seton Catholic's Alex Coupal.

Tappan Zee vs. Mendon, 10 am.
Averill Park vs. West Babylon, approximately 11:45 am.

Women's Class D:

Franklin Central vs. Sherman, 6:15 pm.
Hartford vs. Copenhagen, 8 pm.

Friday at Cool Insuring Arena:

Men's Class AA:

Mount Vernon vs. Baldwin, 6 pm.

Alleghany-Limstone vs. Ichabod Crane, 2:15 pm.

Men's Class D:

South Kortright vs. Heuvelton, 9:30 am.
OESJ vs. Prattsburgh, 11:15 am.

The password is......domination (Averill Park vs. Bishop Ludden at Cicero-Syracuse, 3/12/22)

 I misspoke when I said all 10 Section II basketball teams had to wait until Sunday.

Either that, or Averill Park, which was playing at Cicero-North Syracuse against Bishop Ludden, didn't get the memo.

In any case, with apologies to the late game show icon Allen Ludden, Bishop Ludden apparently didn't get their team password for the day, as the Warriors dominated en route to a 67-43 victory.

Check the video:

Yes, Amelia Wood was hot & cold from the free throw line in the 4th quarter, but why would you keep wasting fouls on her? What were the Ludden coaches thinking?

Digging the pro-style scoreboard at Cicero-North Syracuse. Wish they had more of those in Section II. Just sayin'.
============================================
Hockey season is over in Section II. Hours after Shenendehowa was eliminated by Suffern, Pelham routed Queensbury, 7-1. The two downstate teams meet for the state title tomorrow.

News & notes

 Once again, RPI has its collective back against the wall in the ECAC playoffs.

The Engineers squandered a 3-0 lead as Harvard scored three goals in the third period, and had the game winner in overtime to take a 1-0 lead in the series, 4-3. Unfortunately for local fans, the games are not airing on WRPI-FM (91.5), but are streaming on ESPN+ (subscription required).
================================================
The Albany FireWolves snapped their losing streak, and completed a season sweep of Halifax Friday night, posting an 8-7 win on the road to move into 4th place in the National Lacrosse League. Joe Resetaritis, the league's leading scorer, had 2 goals and 2 assists to lead Albany. The 'Wolves return home next Saturday to play Georgia in the rubber game of the season series between the two teams.
=================================================
Union College's hockey team, like RPI, faces elimination on the road tonight after losing in overtime to Clarkson, 3-2. Again, there is no radio coverage for tonight's game.
================================================
The UAlbany women's basketball team punched its ticket to the NCAA tournament on Friday, upsetting Maine, 56-47. The Black Bears had swept the regular season series, but couldn't complete the hat trick. Ellen Hahne was the only Great Dane in double figures with 13 points. Grace Heeps (Columbia) added 4 points. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) was held scoreless in 17 minutes.

Tomorrow, the Lady Danes will learn their fate, as they likely will be a low seed against a Power 5 conference team. It always happens because of the outdated attitudes of NCAA suits.
==============================================
The Albany Patroons welcomed back Anthony Moe Friday night, then proceeded to rout Lehigh Valley, 125-83. This one was over at halftime. Albany (3-0) placed 8 players in double figures, led by Isaiah Jackson with 19 points. Moe had 18 points and 11 rebounds. The two teams will meet again in Pennsylvania tomorrow, and then the Pats return home next Friday.
=============================================
It is now up to Queensbury to carry the flag for Section II in the state hockey championships. The Spartans, who represent division 2 (don't ask), will play Pelham later this afternoon. The winner will play Suffern, which ended Shenendehowa's season earlier this morning, 5-3.

News & notes

 Siena College would love it if the MAAC tournaments moved out of Atlantic City, and back to Albany or elsewhere.

Both Saints teams went one & done in this year's tournament. The women's elimination wasn't so surprising, but the men were expected to go further than they did.

The men were shocked, 77-71, by Quinnipiac on Thursday night. Earlier in the day, the women dropped a 60-59 heartbreaker to Niagara. In effect, the season is over, barring the men gaining an entry into a secondary tournament, such as the NIT.
==============================================
As of right now, Saturday's state semi-finals in high school hockey, set for the Harbor Center in Buffalo, are still on schedule, with Shenendehowa to play Suffern at 9 am, and Queensbury to face Pelham at 2 pm.

We can't say the same for the basketball regionals.

The NY State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced Thursday that all 10 games set for Saturday at either Clinton Community College or Hudson Valley Community College were being postponed to Sunday due to a incoming storm that is set to drop anywhere from 4 to 10 inches beginning after midnight tonight. The postponements, of course, give the teams an extra day to practice and prepare. The games will remain in the same order in terms of starting times on Sunday.

News & notes

 UAlbany is one win away from the America East championship in women's basketball.

Helene Haegerstrand led the Lady Danes with 18 points as Albany downed Vermont, 67-54, in what would be the final home game of the season for Albany at SEFCU Arena. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) & Grace Heeps (Columbia) were held scoreless. Abby Ray (Saratoga) didn't play.

Albany travels to Maine to play the top seeded Black Bears on Friday. Maine swept Albany during the regular season.

News & notes

 UAlbany's men's basketball team is one & done in the America East tournament.

The Great Danes endured cold streaks at the wrong times on Sunday, and were eliminated by Hartford, 61-49. Matt Cerutti led Albany with 13 points, and Jamel Horton added 12.

For coach Dwayne Killings, it's wait 'til next year.
=======================================
With their backs against the proverbial wall, down 3-1 going into the 3rd period, RPI rang up 4 goals, including an empty net goal on a power play, and defeated Dartmouth, 5-3, to advance to the ECAC quarter-finals.

Next stop for the Engineers is Harvard, which will host the quarter-final series starting on Friday. RPI's power play went 4 for 5 on the day, and the only other goal came on a penalty kill.
================================================
The Albany Patroons are 2-0 after beating Atlantic City, 86-81, on Sunday afternoon. Will Brown's club returns to the Armory on Friday to begin a home & home series with Lehigh Valley.

News & notes

 Siena had one simple mission. Win, and wait for help to secure the #2 seed in the MAAC tournament.

Instead, the Saints blew a 16 point 2nd half lead, and dropped a 65-62 decision to Canisius on Saturday afternoon. Jackson Stormo led the Saints with 18 points, while Colby Rogers added 17. Siena will now play either Marist or Quinnipiac on Thursday in Atlantic City.
=============================================
In sharp contrast, Siena's women's team closed the regular season with a 69-65 win over Monmouth Saturday afternoon at the UHY Center on the Siena campus. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) finished with 12 points, and had enough time to head across the river to Troy to see her former team in action in the Class AA women's finals (see below). Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) had just 6 points after a career night on Thursday.
=============================================
Tournament play has already begun for UAlbany's women in the America East tournament. The Lady Danes dismissed New Hampshire, 49-44, at SEFCU Arena. UAlbany hosts Vermont on Tuesday. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 14 points in a low scoring affair.
=============================================
Time is running out on the Albany FireWolves playoff chances.

The Buffalo Bandits, in first place in the National Lacrosse League, needed overtime to beat Albany, 12-11, on Saturday night. Joe Resetaritis had 4 goals for Albany in a losing effort. The 'Wolves travel to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Friday.
============================================
Union College advanced to the quarter-finals of the ECAC hockey tournament, completing a two game sweep of Princeton, 5-1. They'll now await the results of the rest of this weekend's series before returning to action on Friday.

RPI evened their series with Dartmouth, 3-2, setting up a 3rd & deciding game today at Houston Field House at 4 pm. While fans are being admitted, they have to wear masks, as RPI has not completely lifted COVID restrictions out of an abundance of caution.
==============================================
Siena's baseball team was swept by Jacksonville State, 8-4 & 7-1, on Saturday. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Virginia Commonwealth) homered in the opener, but Siena promptly coughed up the lead in the home 3rd.
==============================================
Section 2 hockey is shuffling off to Buffalo next week.

Shenendehowa, the Delvecchio Cup champions, blew away Monroe-Woodbury, 12-2. Queensbury, a Division 2 school (don't ask), clipped John Jay, 7-5.

Saturday's basketball sectionals:

Men's Class AA:

Green Tech thwarted CBA's attempt at avenging a early season loss, and captured their first sectional title in 8 years. Dayshaun Walton led all scorers with 23 points, and Zaveon Little added 18. David Clement led CBA with 16.

Green Tech now moves on to play the Section 3 champion, either Liverpool or West Genesee, next Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College, with the state semi-finals set for Cool Insuring Arena the following week.

Men's Class A:

Mekeel Christian, like Green Tech an independent, won its 2nd straight title, beating Gloversville, 64-30. The Dragons were shut down in the first quarter, held to just 2 points, and held to 4 in the 4th quarter. The Lions had 4 players in double figures, led by Joey Roddy with 15 points. No Dragons player reached double figures.

Men's Class B:

The Colonial Council was assured the title, and Ichabod Crane put away a pesky Catholic Central squad, 51-50. Brett Richards was the only Rider in double figures, leading all scorers with 27 points.

Men's Class D:

Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville defeated Northville, 52-45. Owen Feagles led three OESJ players in double figures with 15 points.

Women's Class AA:

The biggest shocker of the day belonged to Albany, as the Lady Falcons avenged an earlier loss to Shenendehowa, 58-52. Shonyae Edmonds, the tournament MVP, led all scorers with 21 points. Jillian Huerter had 19 to lead Shen.

Women's Class A:

Make it 8 sectional titles in a row for Averill Park, as they beat Burnt Hills for the 3rd time this season, 63-46. Amelia Wood & Taylor Holohan had 19 points each to lead the Warriors. Carlie Rzeszotarski, in her final basketball game (she'll play volleyball at Colgate in the fall) also had 19 to lead the Spartans.

Women's Class B:

Schalmont blew away Fonda-Fultonville, 73-35. Riley Burchardt led the Sabres with a game high 26 points. Payton Graber added 15, and Karlissa Antoine had 23.

Women's Class C:

Duanesburg, the top team in the Western Athletic Conference, defeated Greenwich, 64-47. Allison O'Hanlon led all scorers with 26 points for Duanesburg.

Women's Class D:

Hartford defeated Saratoga Catholic, 73-63. Gabrielle McFerran led Hartford with 21 points. Ashley Lipson had a game high 25 points for the Saints.

News & notes

 RPI's men's hockey team needs to win back-to-back games for the first time since December if they want to advance in the ECAC playoffs.

The Engineers dropped a 3-2 decision to Dartmouth Friday at Houston Field House, as the Big Green avenged a 6-3 loss in the same venue a week earlier. Puck drop tonight is at 7 pm, and if a 3rd game is needed, it'll be at 4 pm on Sunday.
===========================================
Meanwhile, in Schenectady, Union clipped Princeton by the same 3-2 score, and can close out the Tigers tonight. Game times today & tomorrow are the same as in Troy, 7 pm tonight, 4 pm tomorrow if needed.
===========================================
Sometimes teams can come together fairly quickly. We've seen it with the Tri-City Valleycats for years, and, despite not having a full 12 man roster, the Albany Patroons jelled in a hurry Friday at the Washington Avenue Armory.

AJ Mosby led five Patroons in double figures with 25 points as the Patroons crushed Massachusetts, 134-99. Albany travels to Atlantic City tomorrow before returning to the Armory next Friday to play Lehigh Valley.
===========================================
Friday's high school scoreboard:

Men's Class C finals:

Maple Hill 64, Fort Plain 60.

Men's Class CC finals:

Stillwater 73, Greenwich 61.

Stillwater & Maple Hill will meet on Monday at Cohoes High to determine who the champion is between the two classes.

Friday, March 4, 2022

News & notes

 Siena needed a win on Thursday to lock up the #2 seed in the MAAC tournament next week in Atlantic City. Instead, they dropped a 74-52 decision to Niagara, which puts them in jeopardy of losing out on that coveted seed if they lose again on Saturday.
=============================================
The Albany Patroons return to action tonight at the Washington Avenue Armory vs. Massachusetts, but the real question is if they can jell in a hurry, as coach-GM Will Brown is only getting to know his players this week.

We've seen this with the Tri-City Valleycats when they were affiliated with the Houston Astros (2002-20), but a work in progress might not be enough to satisfy the finicky fans in Albany. We'll see.
===============================================
Siena's women's basketball team closed the home portion of their schedule Thursday by beating St. Peter's, 69-58. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany High) had 14 points. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) had a season best 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Saints close at Monmouth tomorrow.
===============================================
Thursday's sectional scoreboard:

Men's Class A:

Gloversville continued its Cinderella run, beating Amsterdam, 60-50. James Collar & Anthony Gray led a balanced Dragons attack with 16 points each.

Mekeel Christian, technically the defending champions since they won in 2020, defeated Foothills Council champ Hudson Falls, 64-50. Zahid Fallen had 17 points to lead 4 Lions in double figures.

The title game is set for approximately 2 pm on Saturday.

Men's Class D:

Northville downed North Warren, 45-36, earning a date with OESJ in the final, which will be Saturday's opening act at 11 am.

When we say approximately in terms of game times, it's because Section II insists on blocking out 90 minutes per game, not accounting for overtime.

Women's Class AA:

Albany avenged a regular season loss to Shaker, eliminating the Lady Bison, 46-40. Azera Gates, just a freshman, led the Lady Falcons with 18 points. It's been 9 years since Albany last won the AA title (same year Troy won the A title, 2013), but to get there, they'll have to continue the revenge tour.

Shenendehowa downed Colonie, 53-39. Kaliegh Montanez led all scorers with 26 points. Jillian Huerter added 11.

Fittingly, the rematch between the Falcons & Plainswomen will be the nightcap, with a 6 pm tip on Saturday night.
==================================================
With RPI's hockey team in the playoffs, fans are finally being admitted to Houston Field House tonight for the opening game of a 1st round series vs. Dartmouth. The Big Green return to Troy after losing, 6-3, one week ago. Tonight's game will be streamed on RPI-TV, available on YouTube.

Thursday, March 3, 2022

Wednesday's sectional scoreboard, 3/2

 Three days after men's Class A top seed Troy was upset by Gloversville, two more top seeds fell at Cool Insuring Arena.

In Class D, Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville upset the top team in the division, Argyle, 53-34. The Scots were held to just 10 points in the first half, and never threatened. Paetyn Logan-Dillenbeck led three OESJ players in double figures with 17 points. OESJ only managed 6 points in the 4th quarter, but by then, of course, the game was already decided. OESJ will play the winner of tonight's North Warren-Northville game on Saturday morning.

Over in Class B, it'll be an all-Colonial Council final, as Catholic Central, which hasn't won a sectional title since 1982 when they were in Class A, and coached by local icon Don Bassett, shocked Tamarac, 74-71.

Danny Bologna led the Crusaders with 21 points. Tamarac's top two scorers, Zach Rice & Joey Poulin, had 26 & 21 points, respectively, as the Bengals were denied an opportunity to bring a sectional title to the Wasaren League.

On Saturday, the Crusaders will meet Ichabod Crane, which hasn't won a sectional title since 1967, when they were in Class C.

Tonight, the Class A semi-finals will follow the North Warren-Northville game. The Foothills Council is assured of at least one team reaching Saturday's final.

Friday:

Class C: Fort Plain vs. Maple Hill, 5 pm.
Class CC: Greenwich vs. Stillwater, 6:45 pm.

Saturday:

Class D final, 11 am.
Class B: Ichabod Crane vs. Catholic Central, approximately 12:30 pm.
Class A final TBA.
Class AA: CBA vs. Green Tech, 3:30 pm.

On the women's side, the Class A final will be an all-Suburban Council affair, as Burnt Hills & Averill Park will meet for the 3rd time this season.

Carlie Rzeszotarski had 20 points, and Callie Chevalier added 14, as Burnt Hills blew out Queensbury, 53-33. Rzeszotarski and Chevalier will finish their basketball careers after this season, as both are committed to playing volleyball in college (Colgate & Slippery Rock, respectively). Chevalier collected her 1,000th career point in Wednesday's win.

Amelia Wood had 24 points, and Taylor Holohan added 22, as Averill Park, looking for their 8th straight sectional title, and 12th overall under coach Sean Organ, defeated Catholic Central, 77-50. As for the Lady Crusaders being in Class A while the boys are in Class B? Don't ask. Gabriella DiBacco, daughter of men's coach Guy DiBacco (or is she his niece?), had 10 points to support Tanavia Turpin's team high 14 points.

Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College:

Class C: Greenwich vs. Duanesburg, 11 am.
Class B: Fonda-Fultonville vs. Schalmont, 12:45 pm.
Class A: Averill Park vs. Burnt Hills, 2:30 pm.
Class AA final TBA.
Class D: Saratoga Catholic vs. Hartford, 4:15 pm.

News & notes

 De'Vondre Perry was thought lost for the season, and UAlbany carried on without him.

Until Tuesday.

Perry returned to action in the home finale against Hartford, and contributed six points. Jamel Horton was the only Great Dane in double figures with 24, and it was not enough, as the Hawks beat Albany, 67-55. The Great Danes will be the #5 seed in the America East tournament, with their first game taking place Sunday at a site to be determined.
================================================
It has been 8 years since Shenendehowa had won the Capital District High School Hockey League's Delvecchio Cup.

On Tuesday, the draught came to an end.

Nolan Sullivan, whose four goal showcase performance landed him on SportsCenter on Sunday, added two more goals, one of six Plainsmen to light the lamp, and Shen denied Adirondack a 2nd straight title, 7-2, at Union College's Messa Rink. Shen moves on to play Monroe-Woodbury on Saturday in Newburgh.

Queensbury, which doesn't play in the Section II tournament, will face John Jay in state play on Saturday.
=================================================
Tuesday's basketball scoreboard:

Men's Class AA semi-finals:

Green Tech 78, Albany 53. Zaveon Little led the Eagles with 23 points, and Dayshaun Walton added 19, while Green Tech's defense held Albany's leading scorer, Isaiah Austin, to just 10 points.

For Little, who was a freshman at Troy when they won the A title in 2019, it's an opportunity to add the AA title to his trophy case.

CBA 52, LaSalle 41. Ayden Harrison had 17 points to lead the Brothers, who have a chance to avenge a loss to Green Tech back on December 7. Adam Myers led LaSalle with 14 points.

The title game will be on Saturday night.

Men's Class CC semi-final:

Stillwater 57, Hoosic Valley 35. Stillwater advances to play Greenwich on Friday night.

Women's Class B semi-finals:

Schalmont 50, Ichabod Crane 33. Payton Graber had a game high 30 points for the Sabres.
Fonda-Fultonville 46, Mechanicville 39. We are assured of a new champion in Class B (The Red Raiders won the title in 2020).

Class C semi-finals:

Greenwich 58, Berne-Knox-Westerlo 31.
Duanesburg 66, Corinth 23.

The finals in both classes are on Saturday afternoon at Hudson Valley Community College.
