News & notes

 Javion McCollum returned from injury, and led four Siena players in double figures as the Saints defeated Quinnipiac, 83-76, Friday afternoon. McCollum finished with 25 points. Andrew Platek (Guilderland/North Carolina) added 19 for the Saints.

Siena will stay in Connecticut, and ring in the new year tomorrow at Fairfield.
===========================================
Traditionally, either Shenendehowa, Saratoga, or CBA would be atop the Blue division in the Suburban Council. Not this year.

Ballston Spa is undefeated at 7-0 after blowing out Hudson Falls, 92-56, on Friday night. The Scotties will travel to Zotto Gym next Friday to play Troy, which is looking to dig out of a 2-game losing streak, both in non-league play.

News & notes

 For the 2nd straight season, a local college coach is facing an investigation into some unprofessional behavior.

This time, it's at Siena.

Women's coach Jim Jabir did not accompany the team  for their road game at Rider on Thursday night, as he is being accused of making racist remarks toward some of his players. Two little used players, including Simone Walker, left the team earlier this week, and now, it seems, we know why.

You'll recall that UAlbany men's coach Dwayne Killings served a 5 game suspension at the start of this season after an incident involving a player last season. In Jabir's case, in his 2nd season as women's coach, depending on how you look at it, this could be meriting more than just a suspension.

Stay tuned.
================================================
Troy High finished last in its own tournament Thursday night at Zotto Gym.

For unknown reasons, the game vs. Liverpool was not listed on the school's page on Aktivate, nor was it promoted in the papers.

Anyway, Adreo Ash led all scorers with 27 points as Liverpool handed Troy its 2nd straight loss, 70-56. Terrence Clark led Troy with 22 points, and Daniel Covington added 14. The Flying Horses (4-2) are idle until next Friday when they host Ballston Spa.

The women, meanwhile, are searching for their first win of the year, and nearly got it Thursday, as they battled back from a 2nd half deficit before falling to Guilderland, 45-40. Steve Lombard's club (0-8) returns home Wednesday to play Bethlehem, and will host the Lady Dutch on January 20 before a road trip to Kingston.
==================================================
RPI's men's hockey team is spending New Year's weekend on the road. They should be using modern technology to transmit their radio broadcasts back to the 518.

There were some issues with the old school style transmission on Thursday, as RPI fell to Bowling Green, 3-1. As for WRPI, satellite transmission is possible in this day and age.

The Falcons host the Engineers again tonight.

Wednesday's high school scoreboard, 12/28

 Scorestream, which provides results to WTEN, WNYT, and the Albany Times-Union, among other outlets, fumbled on Wednesday, getting Troy High confused with LaSalle. Apparently, the jobronies they hired as holiday interns mashed up two games into one.

Anyway, Greg Davis' Cadets fell to Cicero-North Syracuse, 72-57. Adam Myers led the Cadets with 17 points in a losing effort. Unfortunately, the result of Troy's game vs. Bishop Grimes has not been reported as of press time.

They wouldn't get a ticker tape parade, but..........

 The Troy High softball team reunited last Thursday for a special occasion at City Hall. The 22-3 Flying Horses were recognized by the Troy City Council for their accomplishments, reaching the state semifinals before being eliminated.

Photo courtesy The Record.

Coach Sean Geisel's club graduated only three seniors in 2022, so they'll have their nucleus, including ace pitcher Olivia DeCitise, back for the 2023 season.

Before the city discontinued the Flag Day parade in 2019, you would think the team would've been honored at such an event this year. But, just imagine if they go all the way to the state title this coming season.......

News & notes

 Per Aktivate (formerly Schedule Galaxy), Gloversville has moved their men's basketball game vs. Troy again, this time to January 7, likely due to a Foothills Council scheduling conflict due to postponements the last two Fridays. Tip time is 6 pm.
===========================================
Speaking of Troy, their spring sports schedule is slowly rolling out. The schedules for men's tennis, softball, baseball, & lacrosse will be out after the start of 2023. Per Aktivate, they're scheduling track meets on four consecutive days in May, weather permitting, of course.

Anyway, this is what we have at press time for softball, lacrosse, & baseball:

Softball:

April 5: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
April 8: Whitesboro.
April 10: Chatham (the JV's will meet at Chatham on April 1).
May 8: @ Schuylerville.

The rest of the Suburban Council schedule should be out as early as next month.

Baseball:

April 5: @ Burnt Hills.
May 8: @ CBA.

Lacrosse:

April 6: @ Burnt Hills.
April 25: Albany.
May 11: @ CBA
=================================================
The Albany Empire have a relatively famous name on their roster for 2023, and perhaps beyond.

Vincent Testaverde, Jr., son of the former Miami Hurricanes & NFL (Jets, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Cleveland, etc.) QB, signed earlier this week, marking his return to the 518 after spending a season at UAlbany, and will challenge incumbent Sam Castronuovo for the starting job. This should be fun. Bank on this. Autograph seekers will be searching for the elder Testaverde, should he be in attendance at MVP Arena during the season.

Merry Christmas, everyone.

High School Fridays: The weather outside is frightful........

 And it's already playing havoc with tonight's schedule. The following games have been postponed:

Hockey:

Queensbury @ CBA.

Bethlehem @ Adirondack.

Women's basketball:

Troy @ Academy of Holy Names.

The announcement was made at Holy Names a short time ago, as it also postpones Alumni Recognition Night at the school. No make-up dates have been set, and for both teams, it is their 2nd postponement in as many weeks.

Speaking of Troy, for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, some weasel allegedly has included a malicious link to the school's Twitter feed promoting tonight's game. Did the same thing prior to the Burnt Hills game 2 weeks ago.

As of right now, the only remaining hockey game on the schedule, LaSalle @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa, is still on with a 7:45 puck drop at the Schenectady County Recreational Facility. That could still change in the next five hours.

Update, 5:56 pm.: LaSalle @ Burnt Hills has been postponed. No make-up date set.

Holy Names is coming off a 78-19 blowout win over Lansingburgh yesterday.

Earlier today, in non-league action, Albany's undefeated women's basketball team, defeated Rome Free Academy, 67-60.

Some more scores from Thursday:

Women's basketball:

South Glens Falls 64, Glens Falls 43.

Men's basketball:

Glens Falls 69, South Glens Falls 68.

For the 2nd straight week, inclement weather threatens the Friday high school sports schedule. Check with your schools, even though Christmas break begins tomorrow, to see if Friday's games are still on. Depending on where you live, they may or may not be.
===========================================
After having the game cancelled the last two seasons due to COVID, Siena's men's basketball team will finally take the court at American University this afternoon. Tip time is 1 pm, and the game can be heard on ALT 104.9 FM in the 518.

News & notes

 Another day, another coach leaves.

Except that in this case, Union football coach Jeff Behrman is leaving town now, returning to his home state of Ohio to take the head coaching job at his alma mater, John Carroll, which, like Union, is a Division III school in football. Behrman was a quarterback at John Carroll in the 90's, and, in 10 years at Union (9 seasons due to COVID in 2020), he was 42-20, his final game a loss to RPI in the Battle For The Dutchmen's Shoes in November.

Behrman begins his new job in 2 weeks. Best wishes to him as he begins the next phase of his career.
========================================
Frontier League MVP Brantley Bell is saying good-bye, as well.

The Tri-City Valleycats sold Bell's contract to San Diego, which means he'll be at the Padres' camp in Arizona come February..

Said camp is in Peoria, Arizona, close to Bell's hometown of Phoenix. Bell believes the Padres will try to place him with a Class AA team in the minors.

It was six of one, and half a dozen of the other for Siena on Monday.

Meanwhile, in suburban Maryland, the Lady Saints coughed up a 1st quarter, and never regained control in a 65-59 loss to Mt. St. Mary's. Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) had 13 points, while Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) was held to just 4. Siena is on break until MAAC play begins December 29 at Rider.

News & notes

 When the Albany Patroons' season ended earlier this year, there were indications that coach/general manager Will Brown would return next season.

A lot has changed.

Three months before the 2023 season begins, the Patroons now must find a new coach and general manager, as Brown stepped down on Saturday. His goal is to get back into the college ranks at any level. A gig as a pro coach or scout is not out of the question, either. Son Jackson is currently at Russell Sage.

Best wishes to Coach Brown. We'll see him again soon.

News & notes

 He spent but a year, launching his coaching career after a playing career that included a stint with the Knicks.

On Friday, it was reported that former Siena coach Louis Orr had passed away at 64. Current coach Carmen Maciariello played for Orr during the 2000-1 season, and, in an interview with the Albany Times-Union, described Orr as an "amazing person".

Orr was hired away to Seton Hall the very next year, spent 5 seasons there (2001-6), then 7 at Bowling Green. He finished at .500 (201-201) for his career.

News & notes

 Albany Academy's Kennedy Swedick was named the women's golf Player of The Year by the Albany Times-Union for the 4th straight season. She is also one of 4 Bears to make the 1st team. Dare we think she'll make it 5 in a row when she starts her senior season in September?
========================================
To the surprise of absolutely no one, tonight's basketball schedule has been wiped out by the preseason winter storm in the 518. In addition, Troy High has postponed tomorrow's non-league JV & varsity games vs. the Utica Academy of Science. A quick check of the hockey schedule shows that as of now, only the Albany Academy-Bethlehem game has been postponed. Everyone else will follow in short order before the day is over. No makeup dates have been set as of press time.

News & notes

 It's clear Troy High's bowling team is not sneaking up on anyone anymore.

Dennis Poutre's Flying Horses dropped their 3rd straight Tuesday, 19-13, to Saratoga. Olivia DeCitise led Troy with a 660 triple, followed by Christian Rasmussen with a 603. They'll try to right the ship on Thursday vs. Ballston Spa, as they continue their homestand at Uncle Sam Lanes.
======================================
There's some even sadder news coming from Troy High.

Bill Schnellbaecher, who coached bowling, football, golf, & baseball over the course of a 34 year career in the Troy district, passed away Sunday at the age of 86 after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Leahy Funeral Home.

It's the mascots that have to go

 "We are not cartoons. We are living, breathing people. Just the thought of being a mascot is very degrading."---Ronald LaFrance, Jr., Chief of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, 12/12/22.

In a nutshell, Chief LaFrance's statement sums up the feelings of Native American tribes in New York, and, for that matter, across the country. After months of debate in the Cambridge School District in Washington County, an issue still not resolved internally, the NY Board of Regents ruled Monday that by the end of the current school year, several school districts across the state will have to retire their Native American imagery, though some team names might be retained, as the Regents are taking that under advisement.

Cambridge is one of at least three districts in Section II that uses "Indians" as the team nickname, Glens Falls and Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk come to mind fairly quickly. According to Kathleen Moore in the Albany Times-Union this morning, some schools, such as Colonie & Mechanicville, gave up their mascots long ago, while retaining the nickname "Raiders". Colonie's teams are known as the Garnet Raiders, while Mechanicville's are the Red Raiders.

And, then, there are the "Warriors", such as Averill Park, Stillwater, Niskayuna (Silver), and Mohonasen (Mighty Warriors). On Monday, the Regents ruled that Mohonasen will have to give up its mascot at the end of the season, if not sooner. The school name is an amalgam of three NY tribes, Mohawk, Onondaga, & Seneca.

This less offensive logo figures to be the default for Mohonasen going forward.

According to Ruth Turner, a member of the Regents, this move should've been made a long time ago. Each district will argue about tradition, and the unwillingness to forsake it. We're moving toward 2023. Traditions can change or be amended.

This wave of political correctness isn't over yet. Seems the next move would be to amend some school names to remove references to slave owners of centuries past. And that will be an even tougher task.

High School Fridays: Growing pains (Burnt Hills @ Troy, women's basketball, 12/9/22)

 It's easy to identify the biggest problems 1st year Troy women's basketball coach Steve Lombard is facing after just four games.

Nine players on the roster.

Not enough varsity experience. Most of this year's team was promoted from junior varsity

A clear case of nerves under duress.

The latter became more and more evident in the 2nd half in the home opener tonight vs. Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake. Troy actually led after the first quarter, but the Lady Spartans went into the break with a four point lead, 17-13, and it grew from there. Gary Bynom's club outscored the Lady Horses, 13-5, in the final frame to come away with a 47-31 win, handing Lombard's young team their 4th straight loss. The losing streak actually extends back to the end of last season.

During the 2nd half, Burnt Hills turned up the pressure. They had been forcing turnovers all night, showing no mercy. They had a full complement of players, enabling Bynom to make substitutions more frequently to keep fresh players on the court. Troy? Not so much. Lombard had to spot his subs a little more liberally. Not that it'd matter in the final outcome.

Check the video:

If you're a Troy High booster, it's easy to get angry over the losing, and there are very few gimme's on this year's schedule, if any at all. The margin tonight was 16, which would be an improvement. The "Murderer's Row" schedule continues next week at Shaker, then back at Zotto Gym for a rematch with Averill Park.

News & notes

 Siena's men's basketball team was back on national television on Wednesday, this time on FS2 (Spectrum channel 401), and dropped a 75-68 decision to Georgetown, leaving Siena 1-1 vs. the Big East this season. The Hoyas, coached by former star Patrick Ewing, used a 12-0 run in the 2nd half to take control of the game.
===================================
Condolences to the family of local baseball umpire David Simon, 51, who passed away earlier this week. Simon worked a number of local college games, including Siena, and also other college leagues around the country.
===================================
Due to space limitations, Thursday's swimming & diving results didn't appear in the papers this morning. The only result we have is Queensbury beating Johnstown-Fonda-Fultonville, 102-80. Those space limitations,  by the way, were caused by the publication of Wednesday's basketball scores, which should've made the paper in time for Thursday, but, well......!
====================================
Earlier this morning, Troy High issued a notice on Twitter warning users about a fake message from the NYS Public High School Athletic Association in relation to tonight's women's home opener vs. Burnt Hills, warning of a possible malicious link to the game being streamed on Roku. If Troy is using its own YouTube channel tonight, it won't be an issue. I'd imagine Burnt Hills is also issuing the same warning.
