News & notes

Bring on San Diego!

The Albany FireWolves won their first ever playoff game Sunday, beating Halifax at MVP Arena, 9-3. They'll next play in San Diego Friday night, and, as was the case yesterday, the game will air on one of the ESPN channels.
===================================================
The Albany Patroons continue to roll.

Amir Yusef had 23 points to lead six Pats in double figures as they downed Virginia Valley for the 2nd time in a week, 113-94, at the Washington Avenue Armory. The Pats are currently in 3rd place, 2 games behind Reading, whom they beat on Friday. The Pats are back for a rare mid-week game on Wednesday.

Albany has already beaten Tri-State twice in the last month. Wednesday could be more of the same.

News & notes

 Less than 5,000 fans attended the Albany Firebirds' home opener Saturday at MVP Arena. This is likely due to some reservations about the team, since some of the personnel were part of the Albany Empire last season, and while the weasel who destroyed the team, Antonio Brown, is nowhere near Albany this time, and causing havoc elsewhere by leading with his mouth, as usual, there might've been a few skeptics. Plus, the game was originally scheduled to air on NFL Network, but, as reported yesterday, that was bounced at the last minute, though Thursday's home game vs. Nashville will air on NFL Network.

Anyway, it did take some time for the Firebirds, 2024 edition, to find their groove, and a second half comeback forced overtime, in which the 'Birds defeated Orlando, 62-59. It wasn't pretty, but they'll certainly take it.
===============================================
They did play the 2nd game of a doubleheader at Troy High vs. Schuylerville. The Black Horses salvaged a split by beating the hosts, 8-6, after dropping the opener in 8 innings, 6-5. Troy will host Chatham tomorrow.
================================================
Today's Albany FireWolves playoff at MVP Arena vs. Halifax won't be seen on local television. WNYA only carries regular season games, and instead, the game will air on ESPNU (Spectrum channel 370). We'll see if the 'Wolves can top the attendance of the Firebirds from last night, or if they lose fans to the Patroons, who will be up the hill at the Washington Avenue Armory, hosting Virginia Valley. Both games begin a 3 pm.
=================================================
After starting the season 8-0, LaSalle has dropped its last two baseball games, the latest a 5-4 setback to Bethlehem on Saturday. The Cadets are now 8-2 overall

News & notes

 "The wind blows hard against this mountainside...."--Mr. Mister, "Kyrie", 1985.

On a breezy, windy day, Troy High played the first game of what was scheduled as a doubleheader vs. Schuylerville this morning. Troy was coming off a 23-0 mercy rule shellacking of Schenectady on Friday, and with the doubleheader would play 3 games in less than 24 hours.

Game time was pushed up a half hour to 10:30 am, with the change made in mid-week. Troy parents provided a between games spread consisting of a sub platter & snacks for players, coaches & their families.

After taking an early 1-0 lead, Troy fell behind, 5-1, going into the home half of the 5th inning. Kaylee Kussler tied the game with a 3 run homer, clearing the tall fence in left field. Olivia Ashline, one of Friday's stars, walked off the Black Horses with a run scoring single in the 8th inning to end it, as Troy wins, 6-5. We have no information on the 2nd game as of press time, and as ye scribe left the campus, the umpires appeared to be leaving, or waiting for relief for game 2.

We're also waiting for the result of Friday's flag football game between Troy & Niskayuna.
=================================================
Those of you expecting to see the Albany Firebirds' opener vs. Orlando on NFL Network tonight will have to go online.

The Albany Times-Union reported this morning that the game is off the NFLN schedule, but NFLN cameras will be at MVP Arena Thursday night for the game vs. Nashville. Kick time is just after 8 pm tonight & Thursday.

Check arenafootball.live for the game.
=====================================================
Edward Dyson III led 5 Albany Patroons in double figures as the Pats won their 2nd straight over Reading, 115-104, Friday at the Washington Avenue Armory. Albany continues the homestand tomorrow at 3 pm vs. Virginia Valley.

News & notes

 He only spent two seasons in the 518, but Jared Verse will still carry some UAlbany with him into the NFL.

Verse, who transferred to Florida, was drafted in Thursday's 1st round of the NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Because of his connections to the Great Danes, he merited headlines on newspaper & TV websites Thursday night.

Now, we'll see if he sticks with the Rams.

In other UAlbany news, men's lacrosse coach Scott Marr is looking for the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association to investigate reports of racists taunts hurled at Albany players in a game against Merrimack on April 21. According to media reports, the slurs were aimed at Native American players on Albany.

Stay tuned.
===========================================
There are haves & have-nots in Section II flag football.

Troy High rebounded from a loss to Shenendehowa last Friday by shutting out Schenectady, 25-0, on Wednesday afternoon. Troy (4-1) hosts undefeated Niskayuna tonight at 6:30 before visiting Columbia on Monday. Schenectady (1-5) is idle the rest of the week.
===========================================
Kevin Smith's time with the Yankees appears to have come to an end.

Smith (Columbia High) was designated for assignment last week by the team. We have not heard if he has been released or has gone to Triple A Scranton-Wilkes Barre.
=============================================
If you were thinking the Huerter sisters, Meghan & Jillian, would reunite at UAlbany next season, think again.

Jillian has chosen to transfer from Rutgers to Fairfield, which means she'll play against Siena twice a year for the next couple of years.

News & notes

When the news broke late Wednesday afternoon that the Albany Dutchmen would not play this season, you could tell something was wrong.

The team issued a statement saying they'd been told by the Guilderland Town Board that they'd "over-used" Dutchmen Field at Keenholts Park the last two seasons, supposedly depriving children in the town of playing time. That the Guilderland Babe Ruth league is involved in this suggests something else entirely.

File photo courtesy The Daily Gazette.

A commenter on Facebook pinned the blame on "try hard parents living vicariously through their kids". It leads one to think that one or more of these parents might also be politically connected, and used that pull to force the Dutchmen out of a park they'd used for just the two seasons after leading a nomadic existence from the beginning, having previously used three fields. Another person suggested renting Connors Park at Siena College, which, if memory serves, the Dutchmen had done previously before moving to Guilderland in 2022.

No, the Dutchmen didn't "overuse" Keenholts Park. The team has done a lot of work helping children in Albany County from the go, and this is the thanks they get? Sooner or later, someone will come forward with the truth. The last thing we need is politics ruining amateur baseball in the 518. The kids shouldn't be used as political pawns. Period.

That being said, whomever started this needs to own up. You owe the Dutchmen one gigantic apology.

The Perfect Game Collegiate League has already announced that a replacement team will undertake the Dutchmen's schedule. Are the Empire State Greys available?

News & notes

 Marcus Jackson is staying in the 518.

Jackson, after 2 seasons at UAlbany, is transferring to Siena for the 2024-5 season. The Albany Academy graduate, and brother of Milwaukee Bucks rookie Andre Jackson, Jr., could crack the Saints starting lineup under 1st year coach Gerry McNamara, and his lateral transfer should add some spice to the Albany Cup game this coming season.

Despite all the hype surrounding women's flag football, most schools are still reluctant to submit results to the local press.

 After losing to the Frederick Flying Cows on Saturday, the Albany Patroons rebounded to beat Virginia Valley, 96-86, on Sunday night. Arsenio Arrington led 6 Pats in double figures with 19 points. Trevis Wyche, after burning Frederick for 33 in a losing effort Saturday, had 15 on Sunday.

The Pats return home Friday to play Reading.

Watching Mets-Dodgers on CW15 on Sunday, fans had to be disturbed by a poorly timed switching error during the critical 5th inning, in which the Dodgers put the game away. After a pitching change, the feed from WPIX returned, only for WCWN to go back to commercials mere seconds later before someone realized a mistake had been made.

Los Angeles won the game, 10-0. WCWN's next game, surprisingly, is Tuesday at San Francisco (9:30 pm).

Troy High spring sports update

 No one at Troy High, one would assume, thought that the women's softball team would be 1 game under .500 overall as we're nearly a month into the season.

But, the reality is, Troy is 3-4, 2-4 in the Suburban Council, after losing to Guilderland on Friday. They have just 1 senior (Katie Pryor) on this year's roster, but the core of the team will still be around for at least another year. They have two regular pitchers at least in Lauren Matthews & Kaylee Kussler, instead of riding the left arm of Olivia DeCitise, who herself has been struggling as a freshman at UMass-Lowell, such that they have her pitching out of the bullpen for now.

The road ahead: Troy will have a return match at Cohoes on Monday, as the Tigers will seek to avenge losses earlier this season and last season vs. the Lady Horses. After that, Troy is at Saratoga on Wednesday before returning home to play Schenectady on Friday & a non-league game against Schuylerville on Saturday.

As for the rest.....

Flag football: Troy, pending the outcome of Friday's game vs. Shenendehowa, is 3-0. The Shen game was not reported to the local press as of press time. The Horses will visit Schenectady on Wednesday before coming back home to play undefeated Niskayuna Friday night, and close the month of April at Columbia on April 29.

Update, 4/22: Troy fell from the undefeated ranks on Friday in losing to Shen. They join Columbia & Albany at 3-1.

Men's lacrosse: Not including Saturday's game vs. Scotia, Troy has yet to win a game this season, and have been routinely blown out in each game. There's a reason Troy's website doesn't include results of the lacrosse matches.

Update, 4/22: Troy is now 0-6 after losing to Scotia.

The road ahead: The Troy laxmen will play under the lights vs. Voorheesville on Tuesday night, though technically it's a twilight game, as the game starts at 7 pm. Then, they'll visit LaSalle on Wednesday at 6 pm.

Baseball: Trevor McCarthy, in his 1st season, is also 3-4 after thumping Guilderland, 9-2, Friday, finishing a stretch where the Horses played 5 games in as many days due to weather. It isn't so bad this week, just 3 games in 4 days.

The road ahead: LaSalle returns to THS Monday after Troy got bumped out of Bruno Stadium (weather-related reasons) last week. Jesse Braverman's Cadets blew out Troy last year. Currently undefeated, LaSalle shouldn't expect an easy mark this time. The Horses will then hit the road to play Saratoga Wednesday night, and a late afternoon game at Queensbury on Thursday. Friday's game vs. Schenectady has been cancelled, as the Patriots don't have enough players to fill the roster this season. Not sure if that will go as a forfeit win for Troy.

While the outdoor track teams have had some standout individual performances, coach Jordan Canzeri is still looking for that elusive first win. Tennis? Fuhgeddaboutit!!! The tennis results have not been submitted to the press to avoid embarrassment, as I'd suspect they haven't won a meet yet this season.

While it appears baseball, flag football, & softball will all advance to the post-season, one wonders how the school will address the issues with the other sports as it transitions to the Colonial Council next season. Stay tuned.

News & notes

 Meghan Huerter will have some company at UAlbany next season.

A fellow Shenendehowa alumnus, Bella Stuart, is transferring from New Hampshire to Albany as a graduate student after playing for the Lady Wildcats the last 4 seasons. Proof positive that the transfer portal does work both ways.

Meanwhile, Shaker grad Maddisyn Mahoney has chosen her next destination for her senior season.

Mahoney will transfer from the College of St. Rose to Le Moyne, where she'll play for Siena alumnus Mary Grimes. Best of luck to Maddisyn.
============================================
Siena men's basketball announcer Emmanuel Berbari has been moonlighting the last couple of years, and it could pay off in the long term.

Berbari has been one of a number of fill-in play-by-play announcers for Yankees radio broadcasts, and, with the news of senior announcer John Sterling's retirement on Monday, Berbari may get his chance to take the gig full time, as he's on a short list of candidates, a list that also includes Ryan Ruocco, who has spelled Sterling and TV play-by-play voice Michael Kay in recent years when not calling games for ESPN.

The only hitch is if Berbari has to give up his winter gig for Yankee pre-season games. Stay tuned.
============================================
If you can't get to MVP Arena for the Albany Firebirds' home opener vs. Orlando next Saturday night, take heart.

The game will air on NFL Network (Spectrum channel 310) after the conclusion of the NFL Draft. Kick time is 8 pm as a result.

In unrelated news, former Albany Empire owner and general nuisance Antonio Brown is in trouble again, this time leading with his mouth on social media.

His target? Caitlin Clark.

After Clark was drafted by the WNBA's Indiana Fever Monday, Brown made some disparaging remarks about the young phenom, which he has not walked back or apologized for. Anything to continue his 15 minutes of post-career infamy. Here's to hoping his cousin, Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, now with the Kansas City Chiefs, doesn't make the mistake of following his brain dead relative off the field......

News & notes

 One week before the NFL draft, a possible prospect from UAlbany has passed away.

Amitral "AJ" Simon died suddenly on Wednesday. Cause of death is unknown as of press time. Simon, a linebacker, registered 17 1/2 sacks, 12 1/2 during the 2023 season, in which the Great Danes made a run at the NCAA FCS title, finishing 11-4.

Our condolences to the Simon family.
================================================
Bill Arsenault, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, devoted a large chunk of his alumni column to Duke softball 3rd baseman Ana Gold (Ballston Spa). Gold has played all 41 games for the Blue Devils this season (37-4, 16-2 ACC), and is hitting .275 with 7 HR's, 2 doubles, 3 triples, and 34 RBI. Check the ACC Network listings to see if you'll get to watch Duke this weekend.
=================================================
There are no box scores for flag football last night, but what we do know is that Shaker fell from the ranks of the undefeated, as Niskayuna went to 3-0 in beating the Lady Bison, 33-26, on Wednesday night. Columbia is also 3-0 after winning on Monday, and Troy stays unbeaten after taking down Bethlehem.
==================================================
Former LaSalle standout Eddie Yamin also got a write-up from Bill Arsenault today.

Yamin, now a sophomore at Dayton, is hitting .321 with 9 homers and 36 RBI's, both tops on the Flyers. Dayton is 6-3 in the Atlantic 10, and will soon meet up with Brett Young & George Washington University.

News & notes

 For those of you Troy High supporters planning on attending tonight's game at Bruno Stadium, change your plans.

Due to Friday's games being rained out, Troy & LaSalle have postponed the game to play league games instead. Troy will host Shaker at 4:15. Mohonasen replaces Troy as the opponent for LaSalle at The Joe at 6 pm. No make-up date has been set for Troy-LaSalle. League games take priority over non-league games.
For what it's worth, the game was listed for a 4:35 start at Geer Field in the paper, but that's not happening, of course.
===================================================
Bethlehem grad Claire Hutton has turned pro.

The 18 year old, who was an early graduate from Bethlehem, has signed a 3 year deal with the Kansas City Current of the National Women's Soccer League, where the Current are 3-0 prior to Sunday's home opener vs. NJ-NY Gotham FC.
====================================================
The Albany Patroons have won 5 straight after beating Tri-State, 111-98, at the Washington Avenue Armory on Sunday. Trevis Wyche led 4 Pats in double figures with 35 points despite an ankle injury.

Jamil Hood (Green Tech/Bryant & Stratton) was also dinged up, and finished with 7 points. Derrick Rowland, Jr. (Green Tech/New Haven) added 14. The Pats go back on the road Saturday at Frederick (Maryland).
======================================================
While we still don't have all the scores from week 1 of Section II flag football (shame on the schools), we do know there are at least three undefeated teams as play resumes on Wednesday. Troy, Columbia, and Shaker are all 2-0. Shaker knocked off Albany in a high scoring affair, 40-31, on Friday.

Albany women's basketball coach Decky Lawson is coaching the Falcons' flag football team as well, and has brought some of his players off the hardwood, and onto the gridiron. The Falcons are 1-1, having scored 75 points in the two games. Albany blew away Bethlehem in their opener on April 10. The Falcons host city rival Albany Leadership on Wednesday, then visit Columbia on Friday.
=========================================================
Sunday's college scoreboard:

Baseball:

Russell Sage swept Utica, 11-7 & 10-3.
College of St. Rose swept St. Anselm, 6-3 & 14-8.
UMBC 12, UAlbany 7.
Richmond 12, George Washington 2. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena) went 1-3 with a walk.

Women's lacrosse:

Skidmore 21, Oneonta 6.

Softball:

Bryant 7, UAlbany 6.
Cobleskill swept Delhi, 7-0 & 10-2.
Rider 3, Siena 1.
St. Rose split with Franklin Pierce. The Golden Knights dropped the opener, 5-2, but came back to win the nightcap, 10-8.

Union swept Skidmore, 7-2 & 9-4.
St. John Fisher swept Russell Sage, 8-4 & 10-1. The 2nd game went 5 innings.

News & notes

 Belated congratulations to Schenectady product Tara VanDerveer, who retired as Stanford women's basketball coach earlier this week. Tara was born in Massachusetts, and her family moved to Schenectady early on. She graduated from high school in Niagara Falls. She was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011, and won gold medals in the Olympics, Goodwill Games, and World University Games. She finishes with 1216 wins on her record for an .818 winning percentage.
==================================================
Flag football scores have been hard to come by. Only one result came without a box score in today's editions, and it was Troy going to 2-0, beating Burnt Hills, 27-12. The Lady Horses return home Wednesday night to play Bethlehem at 7:30 pm.
===================================================
The rest of Friday's high school action:

Softball:

Adirondack League:

Argyle 14, North Warren 1.

Western Athletic Conference:

Duanesburg 23, OESJ 0.
=====================================================
UAlbany has lost another player to the transfer portal in basketball.

Muneer Newton played all 32 games this season, but has entered the portal to see what would be a better fit for him. Something tells me either Newton or some of the others, like Sebastian Thomas, could return, or this could spell the end of Dwayne Killings' tenure with the Great Danes. Stay tuned.
=======================================================
Friday's college results:

Baseball:

Canisius 16, Siena 10.
Richmond 11, George Washington 8. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena) went 1-3 with an RBI & a run scored.

UMBC 12, UAlbany 2. Jon Mueller's club has now dropped six straight, and will try to right the ship this afternoon.

Softball:

RPI swept Ithaca, 6-2 & 7-5.
Cobleskill 2, Delhi 0.

Men's tennis:

Union 6, St. Lawrence 3.

Women's tennis:

St. Lawrence 7, Union 2.
RPI 6, Rochester 3.

News & notes

 It is expected to rain for the balance of the afternoon, and, so, figure on virtually the entire Section II schedule, save for tonight's flag football games, and some lacrosse, as well, has been postponed.

At Troy High, after seeing their baseball & tennis events at CBA washed out two days in a row, make-up dates have been set. Tennis will be on April 18, while the baseball game will be on April 16.

Speaking of baseball, Monday's clash between Troy & LaSalle, originally set for Geer Field, has moved up the road to Joe Bruno Stadium, with a 6 pm 1st pitch.

News & notes

 Syrita Faraj, who played as a graduate transfer for the College of St. Rose this season, was named to the Empire 8 Conference's 25th anniversary team. Faraj, before coming to St. Rose, had played at Russell Sage after graduating from Tamarac. Congratulations to Syrita.
===========================================
Jonathan Beagle is leaving UAlbany in his rear view mirror.

The Hudson Falls grad is transferring to Richmond for his junior season. Beagle left the Great Danes toward the end of this season due to "personal issues", but, as WNYT's Rodger Wyland opines in today's Albany Times-Union, a change of scenery and leagues may be just what Beagle needs.

News & notes

 It's Masters Week in golf, and before the tournament itself begins on Thursday, Augusta National opened its doors to a junior tournament, which wrapped on Sunday.

South Glens Falls 8th grader Hayden Knapp took part in the Drive, Chip, & Putt national finals Sunday, finishing 5th. It could be that Section II may have found its next women's golf star after Albany Academy's Kennedy Swedick graduates at the end of the season, and leaves for Virginia.
==============================================
While classes will not resume at Troy High, and, presumably, other schools in the 518, today due to the solar eclipse, there's a full slate of sports action.

Troy softball (1-1) will continue their homestand vs. Colonie today at 5 pm, while the baseball team (0-1) hosts Guilderland. A non-league softball game vs. Glens Falls, set for tomorrow, has been postponed, as Troy will instead make up Friday's postponed game vs. Shenendehowa. The Glens Falls game has been rescheduled for April 16.
================================================
There was some softball action Sunday, as Mayfield (Western Athletic Conference) took part in a tournament, and won both games, defeating Copenhagen, 7-0, then defeating Avoca-Plattsburgh, 6-3.

News & notes

 Maybe the Albany FireWolves should put those throwback Attack jerseys back in the vaults.

Going retro for one night didn't work for the playoff-bound 'Wolves as they fell to Toronto, 10-7, Saturday night at MVP Arena. Nice idea, but it didn't work.
============================================
Up the hill at the Washington Avenue Armory, the Patroons made seafood out of the Rhode Island Kraken, 109-74, giving coach Derrick Rowland his 150th career win. If you check out Chuck Miller's account of the game on his blog, you'll see he made a hidden reference to an old time cartoon from the 50's in summarizing Albany's win over the Connecticut Crusaders on Friday.

The Pats are back on the road this Friday, at Jamestown, while the 'Wolves visit someplace called Panther City on Saturday.
=============================================
A couple of years ago, wrestler-singer Chris Jericho cancelled an appearance by his band, Fozzy, at Empire Live. At the time, All Elite Wrestling was dealing with a plague of injuries, and Jericho gave up some tour time to help the promotion. When he rescheduled the 2022 tour, Albany wasn't included.

In October, he'll try again.

Fozzy has been announced to play at Empire Live in late October. Tickets are just in the $25-28 dollar range, though surcharges will be added if you order tickets through 3rd party vendors (i.e. Ticketmaster).

News & notes

 Will Brown is not coming to Siena at all.

Siena chose to stay in-house, and promoted women's basketball assistant coach Terry Primm to head coach on Friday, maintaining some continuity. When Primm acted as interim coach in the absence of Jim Jabir during the 2022-3 season, he went 6-1, and that alone might've been enough incentive for the promotion.

Since the season ended last month in the semi-finals of the MAAC tournament, Siena has seen several players enter the transfer portal, including stars Elisa Mevius and London Gamble. With Primm's promotion comes the prospect of them returning.

Brown will be looking for a new gig after the College of St. Rose closes next month. Siena had a chance to bring him in, twice, and whiffed both times, although in the case of the women's team, Primm's familiarity with the system was a deciding factor.
===============================================
When the Albany FireWolves take the field at MVP Arena tonight vs. Toronto, they'll wear the colors of the last NLL team to call Albany home, the Attack, who played from 2000-3, and even had future WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley doing commercials for them.

Well, throwbacks are a trendy thing in baseball and football, too, for special promotions, so maybe the 'Wolves, who've clinched a playoff spot, might have something here.
===============================================
The Albany Patroons placed 5 players in double figures in beating Connecticut, 103-91, on Friday. The Pats return home tonight to play Rhode Island at the Washington Avenue Armoey at 7 pm, concurrent with the Albany-Toronto game at MVP Arena.
===============================================
Friday's college scoreboard;

Baseball:

Friday:

Tennis:
