High School Fridays: CBA @ Niskayuna (1/31/25)

  This week, Niskayuna makes its 2nd appearance on My4's game of the week, this time hosting CBA. Steve Dagostino joins Rodger Wyland at the desk.

That it took Niskayuna to nearly halfway through the 1st quarter to score suggested a tighter game than it ended up. Next week, the women take center stage, as Shenendehowa hosts Bethlehem.

Meanwhile, speaking of the women:

LaSalle defeated Cohoes, 64-47. Troy, meanwhile, saw their 6 game winning streak come to a crashing end as they were mauled by the Bears of Albany Academy, 61-33. The Bears employed the same kind of tight man-to-man defense that plagued Troy in their final years in the Suburban Council, Being held to 6 points in both the 2nd & 3rd quarters didn't help Troy's cause at all. Fortunately for Will Harris' club, they could find it a bit easier playing Voorheesville on Tuesday.

News & notes

 Shaker grad Tommy Kahnle's 2nd tour of duty with the Yankees is over. Kahnle signed a free agent contract with Detroit earlier this week to bolster the Tigers' bullpen. Reportedly, the Yankees couldn't afford the price Kahnle and his agent were asking.

It was "Pink Zone Night" at UHY Center on the Siena campus, and the Lady Saints left Marist feeling, well, a wee bit blue.

Anajah Brown, despite a flu bug, led Siena with 17 points. Ahniysha Jackson added 14, and Teresa Seppala had 15, including her 1000th collegiate point, joining Jackson in that elite group, as Siena dispatched the Red Foxes, 62-46. Up next is a road trip to Quinnipiac tomorrow.

News & notes

 Apparently, Troy High is not getting forfeits in bowling after all.

Thus, the Flying Horses stand at 7-6 (7-5 Colonial Council) after defeating Voorheesville, 21-11, on Tuesday at Uncle Sam Lanes. The "forfeits" vs. Catholic Central, which didn't field a men's team this year, are off the board.

The season ends today with Senior Day at Uncle Sam vs. Ravena.

Siena's Kyle Winters, a walk-on at the start of the season, not only was granted a scholarship, but also was the subject of a feature piece on the NBC Nightly News last Sunday. The California native earned his scholarship back in September, and it went viral when his teammates mobbed him after practice. Congratulations, Kyle.

News & notes

 Kevin Huerter, now with the NBA's Sacramento Kings, returned to Shenendehowa's gym on Tuesday for the first time since the 2018 NBA Draft, as Shen was retiring Huerter's #3 jersey.

Unfortunately, Shaker spoiled the party by upsetting Shen, 68-60, handing Paul Yattaw's club their first league loss of the season.

On Sunday, UAlbany's women's basketball team will swap basketballs for bowling balls.

For the 7th year, the Lady Danes will have the Bowling Classic at Apex Entertainment at Crossgates Mall. Entries are a little pricey, and not because it's a fund-raiser for the UAlbany athletic program. Regular bowling at Apex, whether it's traditional 10 pin or candlepin, is steep at an hourly rate of, at last check, $55 per person per hour. On Sunday, it'll be $70 per person for the event, and $250 for a group of 4. Non-bowlers can get in for $30.

The folks at Apex have to charge that much on a regular basis to pay the rent.

Troy High has had a road game relocated.

Roasted Ravens (Ravena @ Troy, 1/27/25)

 After using Native American imagery & mascots for decades, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk adopted the Ravens as their new team nickname.

Unfortunately, it isn't working so well on the basketball court.

The Ravena women came to Troy High for the first time tonight, while the men played at Ravena, games rescheduled from last month. Given how hot both Troy teams have been of late, so much so you could end up getting burned just shaking hands with the players, it seems, the Ravens had a tall order in front of them.

Good thing they're not the Crows, right? Right?

Troy's women won their 6th straight, and you'd have to go back at least 10 years or so for the last time a Troy women's team won that many in a row, I think. Check the video:

Troy's defense has emerged with the move to the Colonial Council. Much more aggressive and active, unlike the last few years.

Next up for the women is a road trip to Albany Academy on Friday.

As for the guys, they also won their 6th straight. Ravena actually led in this game-----for all of a few seconds in the 2nd quarter, otherwise it was all Troy, all night. Again. This time, they hit 100 points, in a 100-60 demolition. The women's final was 65-35.

The men open a 2 game homestand Thursday vs. Bethlehem, with Shenendehowa coming in on Saturday.

Troy High sports review, through January 24

 As winter sports enters the homestretch, Troy High basketball is, to borrow from Stevie Wonder, hotter than July.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 10-2 (6-1 Colonial Council).

Jamil Hood's Flying Horses dropped 90 points each on Columbia & Ichabod Crane. In between, Stetson Merritt was named to WNYT's all star team.

Next: The road trip continues at Ravena on Monday in a make-up game from last month. Then, it's back-to-back games vs. Suburban Council foes Bethlehem & Shenendehowa, Thursday & Saturday, respectively. Troy will be looking for payback against Shen.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 9-5 (4-4 Colonial Council).

Like the boys, Will Harris' ladies have won 5 straight, and it's been a long time since Troy's women have done that. They collected a receipt on Burnt Hills, then spanked Ichabod Crane.

Next:

Ravena visits on Monday, and then, the ladies visit Albany Academy on Friday.

Swimming:

Current record: 7-0.

Shaker is the last regular season opponent, come Thursday. The Flying Devil Brothers may be on the cusp of history.

Bowling returns Tuesday, as Troy closes with home matches vs. Voorheesville & Ravena to end the regular season.

News & notes

 Amsterdam grad Dale Stanovich has been given an invitation to spring training by the Miami Marlins, who drafted him a couple of years ago. What this tells us is that there's a good chance Stanovich could wind up in "The Show" within a year or two. We'll be paying attention when pre-season games begin in late February-early March.

High School Fridays: A stampede in Saratoga (Shaker @ Saratoga, 1/24/25)

 This week's WNYA game of the week sees Shaker visiting Saratoga. For the 2nd straight week, we had a game that was over early.

Next week, Daniel Smalls & Niskayuna host CBA.

Meanwhile, Troy High keeps rolling.

At Zotto Gym, the women won their 5th straight, and reached .500 in the Colonial Council by thrashing Ichabod Crane, 51-36. Troy (4-4 Colonial Council, 9-5 overall) hosts Ravena on Monday.

In Valatie, the men dominated Ichabod Crane, and hit the 90 point mark for the 2nd straight game, 90-44. This one was also over by halftime. Troy goes to 6-1 in league play, and will visit Ravena on Monday.

We'll have the rest of the scores tomorrow.

News & notes

 It was inevitable.

Troy High sophomore Stetson Merritt, after torching Columbia for 48 points Tuesday, was named Wednesday to WNYT's Section II all star team.

Merritt is already drawing attention from college scouts, including at UAlbany. Troy embarks on a short road trip starting tomorrow at Ichabod Crane.

News & notes

 LaSalle held its annual Cadets For Vets fundraiser Saturday at Frear Park, and the hosts rewarded their supporters with a 3-2 win over the CD Jets. Ben Mannis, Nick Kraz, & Danny Wiese scored for the Cadets, who will continue the homestand on Friday with a non-league game against Gates-Chili at 7:15, followed by a Saturday matinee vs. Penfield.

The rest of Saturday's hockey action:

Shenendehowa 5, CBA 0.

Albany Academy 3, Plattsburgh 2.

Queensbury 9, Guilderville 0.
=======================================
UAlbany saluted National Girls & Women in Sport Day at Broadview Center Saturday with a 79-55 rout of Binghamton.

Kayla Cooper led 4 Lady Danes in double figures with 20 points. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) added 11, and Meghan Huerter, fresh from her broadcasting debut the night before, pumped in 10. Albany (16-3) goes on the road starting Thursday morning at UMBC, and will visit Binghamton on February 1 before coming home on February 6.

Meanwhile, the Albany men had only 7 players, but still beat Binghamton, 70-65. Byron Joshua led Albany with 15 points, one of 4 Danes in double figures.
==========================================
We'll have the full baseball & softball schedules for UAlbany later this week, but for those of you Troy High fans, and you know who you are, 2023 graduate Olivia DeCitise returns to the 518 with UMass-Lowell for a 3 game series at Albany on April 5-6, weather permitting, of course. DeCitise was used mostly out of the bullpen as a freshman, so we'll see what the future holds.
==========================================
Siena's men's basketball team dropped a 64-58 decision to Merrimack on Saturday, despite a team high 16 points from Brendan Coyle.

Meanwhile, in Loudonville, Ahniysha Jackson cracked the 1,000 point barrier for her college career as the Lady Saints took down Merrimack, 79-57, in a game benefiting the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY. Jackson finished with a game high 21 points as coach Terry Primm emptied his bench.
===========================================
Seems a certain newspaper has finally taken notice of Troy High sophomore and leading scorer Stetson Merritt.

Merritt made the Albany Times-Union honor roll this week, after scoring 27 points in a rout of Lansingburgh, and 28 vs. Mohonasen. The challenge now for the T-U is to ensure Merritt earns consideration for their all-star team. Same goes for the local TV stations.
=============================================
While LaSalle had their charity night at Frear Park, the men's basketball team crushed All Hallows, 91-65, at McCormick Hall Saturday. Tre'Dell Faison had a game high 31 points, while Devon Maloney added 28. LaSalle, for some reason, took down the video from YouTube after the game, perhaps to spare All Hallows the embarrassment. The Cadets then beat Our Lady of Lourdes, 92-82, on Sunday.

Troy High sports review, through January 17

 It's mid-terms week, but there are some games to be played, as the winter season winds down.

Bowling:

Current record: 8-7 (8-6 Colonial Council).

Don Poutre's club gets a week off after getting swept by Mohonasen & Cohoes this week.

Next: The final week of the season sees rematches vs. Voorheesville & Ravena at home, with Ravena the Senior Day opponent on January 30.

Related news: When classes resume January 27, there will be bowling for the girls in their phys ed classes at Uncle Sam Lanes. That suggests that Troy, which has 4 women on their co-ed team, is just about ready to spin off a womens team. That, I think, would be 1-2 years away from reality.

Men's swimming:

Current record: 6-0.

Although Troy has just 1 swimmer on the roster (everyone else is from CBA or Columbia), the Flying Devil Brothers are rolling, with Guilderville the latest victim.

Nexz: Schenectady-Colonie visits on Tuesday. The season closes with a road trip to Shaker on January 30.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 7-5 (3-4 Colonial Council).

The Lady Horses blew away Lansingburgh by nearly 70 points, then pulled away in the 2nd half to beat Mohonasen, running their winning streak to 3 in a row.

Next: Will Harris' club looks to collect a receipt from Burnt Hills on Tuesday, facing a Spartans team that has struggled this season. Then, Ichabod Crane makes its first visit to Zotto Gym on Friday. The December 20 game vs. Ravena has been rescheduled for January 27. Troy has not had an extended winning streak on the womens' side in a few years.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 8-2 (5-1 Colonial Council):

Jamil Hood's team has also won 3 in a row, and 8 of 10. The Flying Horses' lone league loss was to LaSalle nearly 2 weeks ago. Like the girls, Hood's Horses crushed Lansingburgh, then pulled out a 7 point win over Mohonasen.

Next: Curt Sankey & Columbia will come looking for a receipt of their own, as the Blue Devils visit Zotto Gym. Then, the Horses make their first visit to Valatie for a Friday game at Ichabod Crane. They'll be in Ravena on January 27.

If you visit High School Sports Stats today, you'll see that the score for Friday's Troy-Mohonasen women's game is incorrect. Whomever was keeping score deducted 5 points from Mohon's total for some reason. The score I have (Troy 52, Mohonasen 33) is correct.

High School Fridays: Runaway train (Holy Names @ Catholic Central, 1/17/25)

 WNYA's cameras were at Riverside Center in Mechanicville for the 2nd straight week, this time with a women's basketball game between Catholic Central and the Academy of Holy Names. Meghan Huerter (Shen/UAlbany) joins Rodger Wyland at the desk this week, giving Steve Sgambelluri the night off.

This wasn't even close. The Lady Crusaders ran out to an 11-0 lead at the start, and never looked back. Holy Names was on the back foot the entire night.

Catholic Central has all but wrapped up the Colonial Council title (it's only 1 division now), with a month left in the regular season. As noted in commentary, Audra DiBacco's club will head for NYC to play non-league games the next two days.

Also:

Troy dispatched Mohonasen on the road, as Jamil Hood's club won its 8th in the last 9, 69-62. And at Zotto Gym, Will Harris' Lady Horses won their 3rd straight, 52-33.

The links had to be taken down because both games have been pulled from Hudl for editiing.

The two teams will meet again on Valentine's Day in what will be the regular season finale for the women.

Hockey:

CBA splits its season series with LaSalle with a 2-1 win. Not the kind of result the Cadets wanted with Cadets For Vets tomorrow night.

News & notes

 Siena guard Marcus Jackson (Albany Academy-UAlbany) will be out for up to 6 weeks after sustaining a knee injury sustained in a game vs. Iona on January 5. Jackson wants to play, but he'll be eligible to return in late February.
==============================================
MVP Arena will host the 2025 CrossFit Games August 1-3. The exact nature of the games will not be revealed until just before the event takes place. This will mark the first time in 7 years that the event will be hosted in Albany.
================================================
Chatham & Ichabod Crane already have a unified bowling team which competes in the Patroon Conference, Chatham's league.

Now comes word that the two schools will also merge talents for football, perhaps as early as this fall. Ichabod Crane, based in Valatie, is close enough to Chatham geographically to make this work.
==================================================
While national audiences know he was drafted from Florida State, LA Rams defensive lineman Jared Verse still has some support here from his days at UAlbany.

Verse was a big reason why the Rams won the NFC West, and defeated Minnesota Monday to advance in the NFL playoffs. He's also an All-Pro selection, and, conceivably, could be in the running for Defensive Rookie of The Year. Pretty heady stuff.

Congratulations, Jared.

Ice skating returns to Lansingburgh. What's next? High school hockey?

 Friday night was Opening Night for the renovated Knickerbacker Ice Arena in Lansingburgh. Mayor Carmella Mantello, a 'Burgh native herself, and Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin were among those lacing up their skates for the first public skate at the Knick since 2018.

WNYT has a brief video:

Now, residents have an alternative to Frear Park for public skating. Frear's ice rink was the only game in town after Hudson Valley Community College closed Robert Conway Rink, named for the former mayor, in 2022 when the board of trustees acted on bad advice. That same bad advice forced LaSalle Institute's hockey team to relocate to Frear, where they are playing their home games for the third straight season, and fourth in the last five.

A personal note: A few months back, I'd reached out to LaSalle coach Tim Flanigan, and he had expressed some interest in the prospect of LaSalle moving their home games across town to the Knick in the event Conway Rink doesn't get re-opened. The Knick is a little more accessible on the bus lines to commuters than Frear is, and always has been. Attendance at Frear hasn't been like it was at HVCC, due to fewer bleachers.

And, then, there is Lansingburgh High, situated not too far from the Knick. Lansingburgh doesn't have a hockey team, but the re-opening of the Knick might change that, provided, of course, that there's room in the district budget to add hockey to the athletic program. Given the budget problems the Lansingburgh district has faced in recent years, this is not guaranteed, but it is a nice idea to have. A united team covering Lansingburgh & neighboring Cohoes wouldn't be out of the question, either.

The Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club could also benefit by adding a skating program.

So, then, what is the next move? I guess we'll find out in due course. Stay tuned.

Troy High sports review, through January 10

 With the first full week of 2025 behind us, Troy High sports is gaining momentum.

Men's swimming & diving (united with CBA & Columbia):

Current record: 5-0.

Ballston Spa became the latest victim on January 7, as The Flying Devil Brothers claimed an 84-79 decision.

Next: Guilderland visits on Tuesday.

Bowling:

Current record: 8-5 (8-4 Colonial Council).

The extra wins reflect forfeits over Catholic Central, which is not fielding a men's team this year, and the 2nd forfeit takes effect on Monday. Troy was swept by Lansingburgh on Thursday after the Horses, in turn, swept Schalmont & LaSalle earlier in the week.

Next: Troy hits the road at Mohonasen on Tuesday, then returns home to entertain Cohoes on Thursday.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 6-2 (3-1 Colonial Council).

After a narrow loss to LaSalle on Tuesday, Jamil Hood's club routed Cohoes on Thursday. This one was over in the 3rd quarter.

Next:

Lansingburgh comes in for its first trip to Zotto Gym since the 2019 Holiday Classic, which they won, but this is a different Knights team. Then, it's a road trip to Mohonasen.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 5-5 (1-4 Colonial Council):

Will Harris' club collected its first win in the Colonial by clipping Cohoes on Friday after a tough loss to LaSalle.

Next: The ladies go across town to Lansingburgh Tuesday, and return home to play Mohonasen on Friday.

News & notes

 After being a vital component of the Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen last season, Shaker graduate Jeff Hoffman joins former teammate Tommy Kahnle (Yankees) in the American League, but with the Toronto Blue Jays, who signed Hoffman to a 3 year deal on Friday.

Hoffman had been a dominant reliever until the postseason, when he was torched twice by the Mets in the NLDS. Hoffman & Kahnle figure to see a lot of each other when spring training begins next month, as both the Yankees & Jays train in Florida.
============================================
To update the stats on last night's LaSalle hockey win over Albany Academy, Sam Branon & Michael Nocera notched two goals apiece to lead the Troy Cadets, who ended a 2 game losing streak.

The rest of Friday's hockey:

Guilderville 3, CD Jets 0.

Queensbury 6, Syracuse 1.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 3, Bethlehem 1.

Adirondack 5, Clarkstown 4.

Shenendehowa 5, Saratoga 3. The Blue Streaks' 7 game winning streak ended.
=================================================
Siena's men's basketball team dropped a 72-53 decision to Quinnipiac Friday. Justice Shoats led the Saints with 17 points, while Major Freeman added 16, and Brendan Coyle had just 3.

The Saints return to MVP Arena---and WNYA----Thursday vs. Sacred Heart in a game that will benefit the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY.

High School Fridays: Brotherhood on the court (LaSalle @ Catholic Central, 1/10/25)

 WNYA's high school game of the week returns after a 2 week layoff with a doozy of a game.

In the first of two games the station will air from Riverside Center in Mechanicville, Catholic Central hosts LaSalle. The Cadets are coming off a 4 point win over Troy on Tuesday, while Catholic Central blew out Ravena.

After Greg Davis left for Colonie following the 2022-3 season, LaSalle hired veteran Orlando DiBacco as head coach. DiBacco's brother, Guy, is the Catholic Central coach, in his 5th season. LaSalle principal Steve Sgambelluri is on the call with Rodger Wyland:

Tra'Dell Faison racked up 32 points for the 2nd straight game, having done the same to Troy three nights ago.

It was a good night for LaSalle, as their hockey team snapped a 2 game losing streak, beating Albany Academy, 6-3. The teams will be rematched at Frear Park on February 15, which will be LaSalle's Senior Night.

Speaking of Troy, the women defeated Cohoes, 36-25....

 It was kids' day at Siena's UHY Center Thursday, and the children were treated to a lunch hour matinee between the Lady Saints & Quinnipiac.

Ahniysha Jackson led Siena with 22 points, and Anajah Brown added 18, but the Lady Bobcats came away with a 69-51 win on the strength of a 17-7 scoring advantage in the 2nd quarter to take a 12 point halftime lead. Siena tried to make it a closer game, but it was not to be.
=================================================
Meanwhile, UAlbany's women defeated New Hampshire, 59-32, as the Lady Danes' defense turned a 3 point first quarter lead into a rout, as the Lady Wildcats were outscored, 45-21, the rest of the way. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 20 points.
=================================================
More UAlbany news: Cole Pennington, son of former NFL quarterback Chad Pennington, has committed to Gardner-Webb over the Great Danes after a visit to Albany earlier this week.
=================================================
The NY Phoenix, the expansion team in The Basketball League, is holding tryouts this week. In addition to getting head coach Trevis Wyche from the Patroons, the Phoenix also signed away Arsenio Arrington, who had been a key player for Albany the last couple of years.
