High School Fridays: Runaway train (Holy Names @ Catholic Central, 1/17/25)

 WNYA's cameras were at Riverside Center in Mechanicville for the 2nd straight week, this time with a women's basketball game between Catholic Central and the Academy of Holy Names. Meghan Huerter (Shen/UAlbany) joins Rodger Wyland at the desk this week, giving Steve Sgambelluri the night off.

This wasn't even close. The Lady Crusaders ran out to an 11-0 lead at the start, and never looked back. Holy Names was on the back foot the entire night.

Catholic Central has all but wrapped up the Colonial Council title (it's only 1 division now), with a month left in the regular season. As noted in commentary, Audra DiBacco's club will head for NYC to play non-league games the next two days.

Also:

Troy dispatched Mohonasen on the road, as Jamil Hood's club won its 8th in the last 9.

Troy High School | High School Sports | Home | Hudl

And at Zotto Gym, Will Harris' Lady Horses won their 3rd straight.

Girls' Varsity Basketball | High School Sports | Home | Hudl

The two teams will meet again on Valentine's Day in what will be the regular season finale for the women.

Hockey:

CBA splits its season series with LaSalle with a 2-1 win. Not the kind of result the Cadets wanted with Cadets For Vets tomorrow night.

News & notes

 Siena guard Marcus Jackson (Albany Academy-UAlbany) will be out for up to 6 weeks after sustaining a knee injury sustained in a game vs. Iona on January 5. Jackson wants to play, but he'll be eligible to return in late February.
==============================================
MVP Arena will host the 2025 CrossFit Games August 1-3. The exact nature of the games will not be revealed until just before the event takes place. This will mark the first time in 7 years that the event will be hosted in Albany.
================================================
Chatham & Ichabod Crane already have a unified bowling team which competes in the Patroon Conference, Chatham's league.

Now comes word that the two schools will also merge talents for football, perhaps as early as this fall. Ichabod Crane, based in Valatie, is close enough to Chatham geographically to make this work.
==================================================
While national audiences know he was drafted from Florida State, LA Rams defensive lineman Jared Verse still has some support here from his days at UAlbany.

Verse was a big reason why the Rams won the NFC West, and defeated Minnesota Monday to advance in the NFL playoffs. He's also an All-Pro selection, and, conceivably, could be in the running for Defensive Rookie of The Year. Pretty heady stuff.

Congratulations, Jared.

Ice skating returns to Lansingburgh. What's next? High school hockey?

 Friday night was Opening Night for the renovated Knickerbacker Ice Arena in Lansingburgh. Mayor Carmella Mantello, a 'Burgh native herself, and Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin were among those lacing up their skates for the first public skate at the Knick since 2018.

WNYT has a brief video:

Now, residents have an alternative to Frear Park for public skating. Frear's ice rink was the only game in town after Hudson Valley Community College closed Robert Conway Rink, named for the former mayor, in 2022 when the board of trustees acted on bad advice. That same bad advice forced LaSalle Institute's hockey team to relocate to Frear, where they are playing their home games for the third straight season, and fourth in the last five.

A personal note: A few months back, I'd reached out to LaSalle coach Tim Flanigan, and he had expressed some interest in the prospect of LaSalle moving their home games across town to the Knick in the event Conway Rink doesn't get re-opened. The Knick is a little more accessible on the bus lines to commuters than Frear is, and always has been. Attendance at Frear hasn't been like it was at HVCC, due to fewer bleachers.

And, then, there is Lansingburgh High, situated not too far from the Knick. Lansingburgh doesn't have a hockey team, but the re-opening of the Knick might change that, provided, of course, that there's room in the district budget to add hockey to the athletic program. Given the budget problems the Lansingburgh district has faced in recent years, this is not guaranteed, but it is a nice idea to have. A united team covering Lansingburgh & neighboring Cohoes wouldn't be out of the question, either.

The Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club could also benefit by adding a skating program.

So, then, what is the next move? I guess we'll find out in due course. Stay tuned.

Troy High sports review, through January 10

 With the first full week of 2025 behind us, Troy High sports is gaining momentum.

Men's swimming & diving (united with CBA & Columbia):

Current record: 5-0.

Ballston Spa became the latest victim on January 7, as The Flying Devil Brothers claimed an 84-79 decision.

Next: Guilderland visits on Tuesday.

Bowling:

Current record: 8-5 (8-4 Colonial Council).

The extra wins reflect forfeits over Catholic Central, which is not fielding a men's team this year, and the 2nd forfeit takes effect on Monday. Troy was swept by Lansingburgh on Thursday after the Horses, in turn, swept Schalmont & LaSalle earlier in the week.

Next: Troy hits the road at Mohonasen on Tuesday, then returns home to entertain Cohoes on Thursday.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 6-2 (3-1 Colonial Council).

After a narrow loss to LaSalle on Tuesday, Jamil Hood's club routed Cohoes on Thursday. This one was over in the 3rd quarter.

Next:

Lansingburgh comes in for its first trip to Zotto Gym since the 2019 Holiday Classic, which they won, but this is a different Knights team. Then, it's a road trip to Mohonasen.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 5-5 (1-4 Colonial Council):

Will Harris' club collected its first win in the Colonial by clipping Cohoes on Friday after a tough loss to LaSalle.

Next: The ladies go across town to Lansingburgh Tuesday, and return home to play Mohonasen on Friday.

News & notes

 After being a vital component of the Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen last season, Shaker graduate Jeff Hoffman joins former teammate Tommy Kahnle (Yankees) in the American League, but with the Toronto Blue Jays, who signed Hoffman to a 3 year deal on Friday.

Hoffman had been a dominant reliever until the postseason, when he was torched twice by the Mets in the NLDS. Hoffman & Kahnle figure to see a lot of each other when spring training begins next month, as both the Yankees & Jays train in Florida.
============================================
To update the stats on last night's LaSalle hockey win over Albany Academy, Sam Branon & Michael Nocera notched two goals apiece to lead the Troy Cadets, who ended a 2 game losing streak.

The rest of Friday's hockey:

Guilderville 3, CD Jets 0.

Queensbury 6, Syracuse 1.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa 3, Bethlehem 1.

Adirondack 5, Clarkstown 4.

Shenendehowa 5, Saratoga 3. The Blue Streaks' 7 game winning streak ended.
=================================================
Siena's men's basketball team dropped a 72-53 decision to Quinnipiac Friday. Justice Shoats led the Saints with 17 points, while Major Freeman added 16, and Brendan Coyle had just 3.

The Saints return to MVP Arena---and WNYA----Thursday vs. Sacred Heart in a game that will benefit the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY.

High School Fridays: Brotherhood on the court (LaSalle @ Catholic Central, 1/10/25)

 WNYA's high school game of the week returns after a 2 week layoff with a doozy of a game.

In the first of two games the station will air from Riverside Center in Mechanicville, Catholic Central hosts LaSalle. The Cadets are coming off a 4 point win over Troy on Tuesday, while Catholic Central blew out Ravena.

After Greg Davis left for Colonie following the 2022-3 season, LaSalle hired veteran Orlando DiBacco as head coach. DiBacco's brother, Guy, is the Catholic Central coach, in his 5th season. LaSalle principal Steve Sgambelluri is on the call with Rodger Wyland:

Tra'Dell Faison racked up 32 points for the 2nd straight game, having done the same to Troy three nights ago.

It was a good night for LaSalle, as their hockey team snapped a 2 game losing streak, beating Albany Academy, 6-3. The teams will be rematched at Frear Park on February 15, which will be LaSalle's Senior Night.

Speaking of Troy, the women defeated Cohoes, 36-25....

 It was kids' day at Siena's UHY Center Thursday, and the children were treated to a lunch hour matinee between the Lady Saints & Quinnipiac.

Ahniysha Jackson led Siena with 22 points, and Anajah Brown added 18, but the Lady Bobcats came away with a 69-51 win on the strength of a 17-7 scoring advantage in the 2nd quarter to take a 12 point halftime lead. Siena tried to make it a closer game, but it was not to be.
=================================================
Meanwhile, UAlbany's women defeated New Hampshire, 59-32, as the Lady Danes' defense turned a 3 point first quarter lead into a rout, as the Lady Wildcats were outscored, 45-21, the rest of the way. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 20 points.
=================================================
More UAlbany news: Cole Pennington, son of former NFL quarterback Chad Pennington, has committed to Gardner-Webb over the Great Danes after a visit to Albany earlier this week.
=================================================
The NY Phoenix, the expansion team in The Basketball League, is holding tryouts this week. In addition to getting head coach Trevis Wyche from the Patroons, the Phoenix also signed away Arsenio Arrington, who had been a key player for Albany the last couple of years.

News & notes

 The Daily Gazette is reporting today that the Hawks of the Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) will end their association with Union College after this season, and, like the Garnet Chargers, will play their home games at the new Mohawk Harbor Arena beginning in the 2025-6 season. Have to believe that the annual holiday tournament, which took place at Union's Messa Rink on December 20-21, will move to Mohawk Harbor as well.
====================================================
Listeners to WROW might've been jolted Monday morning to find Ben Patten no longer reading sports scores on the station's morning show. As noted over at The Land of Whatever, Patten now shares the morning drive show with Jaime Roberts, under the title, The Magic Morning Show, in addition to adding a solo berth middays. Apparently, Albany Broadcasting suits are removing sports and lottery numbers from the equation in order to add more program content. Wouldn't be surprised at all if this results in a drop in ratings....
======================================================
Monday's high school scoreboard:

Men's bowling:

Colonial Council:

LaSalle 20 1/2, Ravena 11 1/2. The Cadets will seek revenge against Troy later today.

Troy 20, Schalmont 12. The Flying Horses sweep the season series, and will look to do the same against LaSalle.

In posting the result of Troy's win over Schalmont in today's morning announcements at THS, coach Don Poutre said it was the team's 6th win of the season. What that would mean is that a match at Catholic Central that was cancelled last month ends up a forfeit for the Flying Horses, boosting their record to 6-4 overall (6-3 Colonial Council). We'll see if the two teams actually meet at Uncle Sam Lanes next week.

Monday, January 6, 2025

Troy High sports review, through January 3

 Swimming & bowling resume this week after the 2 week holiday break, while basketball continues.

Swimming & diving (unified team with CBA & Columbia):

Current record: 4-0.

The Flying Devil Brothers return to action Tuesday at Ballston Spa.

Men's basketball:

Current record: 5-1 (2-0 Colonial Council).

Jamil Hood's club made a 2nd half comeback count, and defeated Schenectady in overtime on Friday at the Riley Center.

Next: LaSalle visits tomorrow night, and then, the Flying Horses pay their first visit to Cohoes on Thursday. No reason given for why the game was moved up a day. We're thinking there's some sort of scheduling conflict at Cohoes.

Bowling:

Current record: 4-4 (4-3 Colonial Council).

League play resumes today at Schalmont, and, then, it's a return to Uncle Sam Lanes for rematches with LaSalle (tomorrow) & Lansingburgh. Troy will be the home team Tuesday, and the visiting team on Thursday.

Women's basketball:

Current record: 4-4 (0-3 Colonial Council).

The Lady Horses were assumed to be a doormat in the Glens Falls Holiday Tournament on December 27-28. Will Harris and the ladies played like contenders in upsetting host Glens Falls, then destroying Foothills Council doormat Hudson Falls.

Next: The ladies make their first trip to McCormick Hall to find Kate Gilooly and LaSalle waiting for them tomorrow night. After that, Cohoes makes its first visit to Zotto Gym on Friday night.

News & notes

 It was a good Sunday for Albany Academy at Siena College.

First, the women's basketball team knocked the Academy of Holy Names out of the ranks of the undefeated, 71-45. Holy Names was held to just 15 points in the 2nd half.

Then, it was the men's turn to shine, as Academy defeated CBA in the nightcap, 67-39. We don't have attendance figures for the doubleheader at UHY Center, but even though CBA's fan base travels well, the cold weather may have kept some folks away.
==================================================
24 hours after their women's team fell to Iona, Siena's men's team lost a heartbreaker to the Gaels, 74-73, in front of 5225 fans at MVP Arena in the 2nd of 10 games scheduled to air on WNYA. Niskayuna's Brendan Coyle led Siena with 20 points, while Major Freeman added 10, and Justice Shoats had 16. The Saints are idle until Friday, when they travel to Quinnipiac for a matinee at 2 pm.

For those of you reading the Albany Times-Union this morning, the times for LaSalle's men's basketball games this week are in reverse order.

As you already know, the Cadets' trip to Mechanicville on Friday to play Catholic Central is the WNYA game of the week at 7 pm (tip time closer to 7:05-7:10)., but is listed at its original starting time at 6:30. You'd think Rodger Wyland would've given James Allen, who visits with Wyland on Fridays on WTMM, a heads-up, but the T-U can't be bothered to correct their schedules at all.

Tuesday's game at Troy, listed as at 7, is actually at 6:30.

Some sad news to report.

Local hoops legend Barry Kramer, who later became a state Supreme Court judge, passed away over the weekend at 82. Kramer starred for Linton in the 60's, was drafted by the San Francisco (now Golden State) Warriors in 1964, and played 1 season with the Warriors & Knicks before retiring to go to law school.

During his off-time in 1965, Kramer was part of a local team that was sponsored at different times by Wedekind Motors and Schaefer Beer. He would return to the pros and play for the then-New York Nets during the 1969-70 ABA season.

Rest in peace.

News & notes

 It wasn't so long ago that UAlbany had the son of former NFL quarterback Vinny Testaverde playing for the Great Danes. Now, it appears the son of another ex-NFL QB  is considering Albany.

Cole Pennington made a recruiting visit to Albany on Friday. He had followed the footsteps of his father, Chad, who starred for Marshall in the late 90's before being drafted by the Jets in 2000. Cole played three seasons for the Thundering Herd, but as a backup quarterback. Coincidentally, the elder Pennington would succeed Testaverde as the Jets' QB.

Stay tuned.

The teams are also raising money for The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, and Albany's Melodies Center for Blood & Cancer Disorders at Albany Medical Center, to help Dyson's brother, Tucker, who died 2 1/2 weeks ago after a bout with Burkitt lymphoma.

News & notes

 CBA honored former men's basketball coach Dave Doemel a week ago by christening the court at Ned McGraw Gym in his honor. One of Doemel's former players, Galal Cancer, in his first season as head coach, has the Brothers in contention in the Suburban Council.

You'll recall that Catholic Central similarly rechristened their court, now at the Riverside Center in Mechanicville, after local icon Don Bassett a few years back, and Troy High christened their gym in honor of former coach and athletic director Clem Zotto years earlier.
