News & notes

 Christian Brothers Academy will have a new coach for hockey this winter, as AD Blaine Drescher has decided to step back after 10 seasons on the Brothers' bench.

Taking Drescher's place is Adrien Melrose, and if that last name sounds familiar, it should. His father, Barry, is currently an NHL analyst for ESPN, and has had ties to the 518 as a player and coach with the Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL. Something tells me we'll see Barry at some CBA games, home and/or away, this winter.
=========================================
Albany Academy's Kennedy Swedick will compete as an amateur in the Twin Bridges Championship next week, as the LPGA tour stops in Guilderland at Pinehaven Country Club. What used to be known as the Futures, and, later, Symetra, tour is now the Epson tour. Twin Bridges Waste & Recycling is also partnering with WGNA to host a country music concert at Pinehaven, featuring Maddie & Tae and Michael Ray. A clinic will be held at Pinehaven on Tuesday.
========================================
The Albany Patroons have to wait an extra three days to play Shreveport in the TBL finals.

The Pats could not make flight arrangements in time for tonight's game, so the game's been moved to Saturday, with the scene changing to Albany on July 6-7, the latter if necessary. The extra rest will benefit both teams, to be sure.
=============================================
Toronto's Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) pitched 1/3 of an inning Tuesday in the Blue Jays' 6-5 win over Boston. Gage walked 1, and threw just 7 pitches total.
===========================================
The Tri-City Valleycats kept the momentum going in Canada on Tuesday, downing Trois-Rivieres, 6-3. Joey Gonzalez pitched six innings, fanning four, to pick up his 3rd win. The 'Cats plated 3 runs in the 7th inining, and 1 in the 8th, to ice it.

News & notes

 Shreveport, here they come.

"They", of course, are the Albany Patroons, who demolished Kokomo, 121-83, Monday to advance to the TBL finals against the Shreveport Mavericks. Game 1 will be in Louisiana Wednesday night, and, then, the scene shifts back to Albany Saturday for game 2, and possibly, game 3, which would be on Sunday.

AJ Mosby led all scorers with 36 points, one of four Pats in double figures. Albany led, 25-16, after the 1st quarter, then blew the barn doors off the Armory, as the lead grew through the course of the game.

I would recommend that the Mavericks would leave the cowbells at home. The BobKats paid a terrible price for fan distractions in the first game of the series.
========================================
As the Tri-City Valleycats make their first trip into Canada this season, they welcome back manager Pete Incaviglia after missing the last 4 games to attend to some personal issues in Texas. With nephew Thomas running the team, Tri-City merely went 3-1 to get back to .500.

Tonight, Tri-City opens another series with Trois-Rivieres, after the Aigles won 2 of 3 last week in Troy. The 'Cats return home for a rematch with the Empire State Greys on Friday.

In other 'Cats news, catcher Ciaran Devenney is on the IL after fracturing his cheekbone when he was hit by a pitch vs. the Greys on Saturday. Word is that Devenney will miss up to 2 months in order to rehab the injury.

Meanwhile, the 'Cats plan to sign pitcher Marshall Winn (UAlbany) and outfielder-pitcher Tom Kretzler (Colonie/SUNY Brockport) to bolster the roster for the Canada trip. Winn, a relief pitcher at UAlbany, had a 4.66 ERA this season, with three saves and 19 strikeouts.

Kretzler, the dual threat, went 7-2 on the hill for Brockport, pitching to a 2.07 ERA, and also batted .367 with 17 homers and 63 RBI's. Care to guess what the priority is for the 'Cats?

518 sports gets a hat trick

 All three of the 518's spring-summer pro sports teams entered play Sunday coming off losses. This morning, it's a completely different story.

Start in Albany, at MVP Arena. The Empire snapped a 3 game losing streak in emphatic fashion, holding off the Columbus Lions, 67-48, in front of just 2, 132 devoted fans. Most folks avoided the heat, and watched the game on YouTube, I'm sure. QB Sam Castronova was almost a 1-man show for the Empire, throwing six TD passes, and running for three more.

Albany hits the road on Saturday, looking for revenge against San Antonio. The Gunslingers upset 1st place Carolina over the weekend.
========================================
Up the hill, at the Washington Avenue Armory, Patroons fans were encouraged to bring pots & pans in answer to Kokomo fans doing the same on Thursday in game 1. Not that the Pats needed the help, actually. Mike Williams led all scorers with 24 points, leading 5 Patroons in double figures, as Albany tied up the series at 1 game each with a 106-89 win. Game 3 is tonight at the Armory. The winners then play for the league title vs. Shreveport.
=========================================
Across the river, at Bruno Stadium, the Tri-City Valleycats played home run derby at the expense of the Empire State Greys, hitting six homers in a 2 inning span en route to a 13-1 rout. Willy Garcia had two of the six homers, with Brad Zunica, Brantley Bell, Pavin Parks, & Jonah Girand all also going yard. Tri-City makes its first trip to Canada on Tuesday to open a series vs. Trois-Rivieres. The Aigles evened the season series between the two clubs by winning 2 of 3 at the Joe last week.

Baseball news & notes

 No one wants to be the first team to lose to an expansion team that hasn't won a game.

The Tri-City Valleycats escaped that embarrassment on Friday in pulling out a win over the Empire State Greys, but once the Greys took an early 2-0 lead Saturday, they made sure not to let another games slip away. The Greys (1-35) earned their first win with a 9-3 verdict, spoiling the post-game fireworks show.

The two teams will finish their series today at 5 pm, directly opposite the Albany Patroons game vs. Kokomo at the Washington Avenue Armory.
===============================
Ex-Valleycats making news: Former 'Cat Mark Appel has finally made the majors. Appel was traded, along with Vince Velasquez, to Philadelphia in 2016, but injuries forced him to retire at age 26. Six years later, Appel is in the majors as a relief pitcher for the Phillies, who sit in 3rd place in the NL East, chasing the Mets and Atlanta.

On a steamy Saturday in the Bronx, Christian Javier combined with two relievers to no hit the Yankees, 3-0:

The Astros' combined gem is the 3rd no-hitter in the majors this year (the Mets & Angels have the others). Ironically, Yankee starter Gerrit Cole had flirted with no-no's in his two previous starts. It's also the 2nd combined no-no Houston has tossed against the Bronx Bombers, the last coming in 2003, also at Yankee Stadium.
==========================================
Just a quick note that Peacock subscribers who can access their premium channel will get to see today's Mets-Marlins game, set for 11:30 am, after the 1st two games aired on WCWN.
==========================================
We should note that the Valleycats have played their last three games, and likely, today's as well, without manager Pete Incaviglia, who has left the team for personal reasons. Nephew Tom, the bench coach, is serving as acting manager/3rd base coach in the interim.
=========================================
518 alumni alert: The Cincinnati Reds have placed Jeff Hoffman (Shaker) on the IL with an undisclosed injury. Sounds more like they put him on the IL because they needed the roster space for a returning player. Hoffman will be back soon.

With all the hype surrounding Freddie Freeman's return to Atlanta Friday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers roughed up Ian Anderson (Shenendhehowa) for four runs on six hits in a win over the Braves. Anderson also walked four in four innings, and absorbed the loss, with his ERA now at 4.60 for the season.

News & notes

 Once again, the Albany Patroons will have to come back to win another TBL playoff series.

The Pats dropped a 123-110 decision to the Kokomo BobKats on Thursday, and now will spend the next two days preparing for another do-or-die game, this one coming Sunday at the Washington Avenue Armory, with a 5 pm start. If Albany wins, they'll play the deciding game 3 on Monday at 7 pm.
=============================================
The Tri-City Valleycats, after being down, 7-0, early, took the lead in the 5th inning with a 7 run outburst, then came back again with 3 in the 8th to defeat Trois-Rivieres, 12-10. Pavin Parks, Brad Zunica, and newcomer Ciaran Devenney all homered for the 'Cats, who open a series against the winless Empire State Greys tonight at 7 pm.
=============================================

News & notes

 The Tri-City Valleycats sent their fans home happy Wednesday night, walking off the Trois-Rivieres Aigles in the nightcap of the doubleheader, 5-4. The Aigles won the opener, 3-1, extending Tri-City's losing streak to 4 before Brad Zunica drove in the game winner in game 2. The two teams will attempt to finish the series tonight. I say attempt, because there is again rain in the forecast.
==========================================
Take a good look at the picture below. It will be the last time it's published, pending an appeal.

The Cambridge Central School District lost its appeal, according to the Albany Times-Union, on Tuesday to keep the "Indian" mascot & imagery, as the NYS Education Department is trying to promote greater inclusiveness and diversity in culture. Come the next school board meeting on July 7, the district will decide whether or not to file an appeal with the NYS Court of Appeals. I say, don't bother. If pro teams in Cleveland and Washington can move on from Native American imagery, then it can happen at the high school level. Education commissioner Betty Rosa, in the same T-U article, is hoping other schools in the area (i.e. Fonda-Fultonville, Niskayuna) can follow suit without so much drama. Stay tuned.
=========================================
It's hard to believe, but the streets of downtown Albany will actually be quiet on Saturday night.

The Albany Empire will have their 2nd Sunday home game of the season, as they host the Columbus Lions at 2 pm. After that, fans can go up the hill to the Armory for game 2 of the Patroons' series vs. Kokomo (game 1 is tonight). The Pats, though, will be going head-to-head again with the Valleycats, who have a 5 pm game Sunday, same as the Pats. The Albany-Kokomo winner will face the winner of the SoCal-Shreveport series, with SoCal leading, 1-0, heading into game 2 tonight.

News & notes

 WTEN is overhauling its sports staff.

Sports director Liana Bonavita said her goodbyes on Friday, after more than a decade spent in the 518 with WXXA & WTEN. Liana is also leaving the broadcasting business, and moving into insurance, taking a job with Northwestern Mutual, per an interview with the Albany Times-Union.

Reporter Jared Phillips is also leaving, which leaves Griffin Haas as the only sports reporter left on staff. They'll fill the void soon enough.
========================================
It must've been raining heavier near Joe Bruno Stadium than anywhere else Tuesday, as the Tri-City Valleycats postponed their game with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles. They'll play 2 today, 7 innings each, with the opener at 3 pm.

In other Valleycats news, the team activated 1B Brad Zunica from the COVID IL, and placed pitcher Oddy Nunez on the 7 day IL. Catcher Daniel Angulo, after being so impressive early, hasn't been hitting, it seems, and was cut, along with pitchers Aneudy Acosta & Eric Ezersky, both of whom were strafed in Sunday's 15-12 loss to the NY Boulders. The 'Cats acquired pitcher Neil Abbatiello & infielder Jace Mercer from Windy City, and pitcher Jaylon Smith from Winnipeg of the American Association in separate deals for players to be named later, so the shuffling will continue.
=======================================
Toronto reliever Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) pitched a scoreless inning in Monday's loss to the Chicago White Sox. Tuesday's result didn't make the papers in time for press this morning, but the two teams have a matinee this afternoon.

News & notes

 The Albany Patroons will be shuffling off to Kokomo.

The Patroons will play game 1 of their series at Kokomo against the Bobcats either Wednesday or Thursday, with game 2, and, if needed, game 3, at the Washington Avenue Armory. Kokomo eliminated Toledo in two straight to advance.

Update, 1:11 pm: Game 1 is in Kokomo on Thursday. If a 3rd game is needed, it'll be next Monday, June 27, at the Armory.
=====================================
Rotterdam native Liz Kuhlkin (Schalmont) was eliminated from the PWBA US Open on Saturday, finishing in 61st place, despite bowling her best games of the tournament. Cherie Tan of Singapore was the tournament leader after four rounds, but fell to 4th place after match play on Sunday.

The finals air on CBS Sports Network tomorrow.
=====================================
Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) pitched 6 2/3 innings on Sunday, combining with three Atlanta relievers to shut out the Chicago Cubs, 6-0. Anderson struck out six, walked two, and scattered three hits.

Jeff Hoffman (Shaker) pitched an inning in relief for Cincinnati in Sunday's 4-3 loss to Milwaukee. Hoffman didn't give up any runs or hits, but walked two.
======================================
The Albany Empire has now lost three in a row, as Carolina completed a season sweep with a walk-off field goal on the final play Saturday night, earning a 59-56 win. Albany tumbles to 4-4, a half game behind the 2nd place Columbus Lions, who will be at MVP Arena on Saturday.
======================================
The Albany Dutchmen have played three more games than the Amsterdam Mohawks in the Eastern Division of the Perfect Game league, which places them in second place, about 2 1/2 games behind the Mohawks, after beating Glens Falls, 11-1, on Sunday. Chance Checca (Ballston Spa/Herkimer Community College) went 2-2 with 2 walks and 5 RBI to lead the Dutchmen. The game was called after 6 innings, likely by mercy rule.
=======================================
The Tri-City Valleycats need some help getting back on the winning track.

Pete Incaviglia's club was swept by the NY Boulders over the weekend, losing Sunday's finale, 15-12.

Tri-City has now lost 9 of their last 11, as the Boulders passed them in the Eastern Division standings, moving to 4th place, while the 'Cats, at 15-16, now are in 5th, roughly 7 games behind first place Ottawa. Trois-Rivieres returns Tuesday, and then, the Empire State Greys will be in town on Friday.

News & notes

 Could fatigue be setting in on the Albany Patroons?

The Pats became TBL Eastern Conference champions Friday night, completing a 2-game sweep of the Huntsville Hurricanes, 110-108, but it was not easy.

Huntsville actually led at halftime, and led by as much as 14 in the 4th quarter before the Patroons got off the deck and rallied to win the game. AJ Mosby led 6 Pats in double figures with 23 points.

Next up? A regional final against the winner of the Toldeo-Kokomo series. If Toledo advances, all three games will be at the Washington Avenue Armory once again, starting on Thursday. If Kokomo advances, they'll host game 1, and then the series shifts back to Albany on Friday.
===========================================
Less than 24 hours after beating the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, the San Diego Padres placed ex-Valleycat Joe Musgrove on the COVID IL Hmmmmm.
============================================
The struggling Tri-City Valleycats were undone by a former teammate on Friday.

Chris Kwitzer, one of the team's stars last year, now plays for the NY Boulders, and burned his former club with 2 homers Friday, as the Boulders blew out the 'Cats, 11-2. Tri-City has now lost 8 of their last 10, falling under .500 at 14-15, as the teams meet again tonight.
===========================================
Rotterdam native Liz Kuhlkin (Schalmont) is in 62nd place in the US Women's Open bowling tournament headed into day 3 of qualifying today in Glens Falls. The top 30 advance to the next round. Kingpin Lanes in Glens Falls is hoping to land a PWBA tour stop as early as next year.

That would be nice, but I would argue on behalf of Uncle Sam Lanes here in town. Seeing as how the PBA has changed its format for television in recent years, setting up temporary lanes at, say for example, Albany's Capital Center or MVP Arena would be a bigger draw.

Stay tuned.

News & notes

 Former Tri-City Valleycat Joe Musgrove is undefeated so far this season, his 2nd with the San Diego Padres. Musgrove won his 3rd straight decision, running his record to 8-0, as the Padres, the leaders in the NL West, completed a sweep of the Chicago Cubs, 6-4. Musgrove went 7 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits while walking one and striking out 9.
===========================================
The current Valleycats snapped a 2 game losing streak, salvaging the final game of their series with New Jersey, 14-6, on Thursday at Bruno Stadium before over 2700 fans. Kumar Rocker, in his 3rd start, all at home, fanned 7 in 4 innings.

The 'Cats are back on the road tonight, which means the Albany Patroons should have more fans at the Washington Avenue Armory for game 2 of the TBL Eastern Conference final vs. the Huntsville Hurricanes.
========================================
Speaking of which, the Pats were down 2 after the 1st quarter, but took the lead for good in the 2nd quarter, and rolled to a 123-104 victory. Albany can close out Huntsville tonight.
===========================================
Rotterdam native Liz Kuhlkin is back in the 518 this week, competing in the US Open women's bowling tournament in Glens Falls. She'll need a strong effort today and/or tomorrow to advance toward Tuesday's televised finals on the CBS Sports Network (Spectrum channel 315).
==============================================
Toronto reliever Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) finished Thursday's game between the Blue Jays and Baltimore, giving up a run on one hit over two innings, as the Orioles defeated Toronto, 10-2. Toronto welcomes the Yankees to Rogers Centre tonight, so it's likely we'll see Gage on cable TV (tonight's game is on Amazon Prime) this weekend.

News & notes

 A 19 year old hoopster from Hudson Falls turned himself in to the NY State Police on Monday in connection with an assault on a referee during a tournament game in Halfmoon 8 days earlier.

Unique Steele, identified by the Daily Gazette, but not by the Albany Times-Union was charged with disorderly conduct and misdemeanor assault, and will appear in Halfmoon Town Court next week. His team, the Saratoga Splash, have been permanently banned from the Impact Athletic Center, per its founder, Tom Huerter, Sr., who also said Impact is adding extra security for Zero Gravity's Coaches Against Cancer event this weekend.
=============================================
Columbia alum Kevin Smith was sent down to Triple A Las Vegas by the Oakland A's on Tuesday. Smith has had his struggles on offense, batting under .200 for the season, and moving down to the minors will help him get some playing time.
=============================================
While batting helmets with single flaps are common in the majors, the Frontier League, to better improve player safety, has had a rule in the books for years requiring flaps over both ears.

Tri-City Valleycats infielder Juan Severino found this out the hard way Tuesday, and it cost the team manager Pete Incaviglia, when Incaviglia was ejected in the 2nd inning of what would be a 7-6 loss to the New Jersey Jackals. The umpires have been given a directive by the league that all batters have to have 2 flaps on their helmets, instead of one.

Just another adjustment for the 'Cats, who've now lost five of their last six.

News & notes

 The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League has expanded this season to 16 teams, or, 2 divisions of 8 teams each.

With high school season over, the league standings are finally in the papers, and it shows that the Amsterdam Mohawks are off to an 8-0 start after beating the Albany Dutchmen Monday night, 8-1.

Jacob Lapham (Lansingburgh/HVCC) went four innings for the Mohawks, giving up a run on three hits while striking out six. Dan Keaney (Guilderland) started for the Dutchmen, going three innings, fanning three while giving up just 2 hits. The Dutchmen squandered an early 1-0 lead in the 4th, as the Mohawks scored three runs in the 6th inning, and five more in the 8th to keep their perfect record intact. The Mohawks stay home tonight to host Mohawk Valley, while the Dutchmen return to Keenholts Park in Guilderland to entertain Saugerties, also tonight.
===================================
According to LaSalle hockey coach Tim Flanigan, the Cadets will return to Frear Park this season, as soon as negotiations are completed to finalize a contract. Hudson Valley Community College is removing the ice from Conway Arena, as reported yesterday. Why? I don't know. Just a radical idea from HVCC administration.

Only a partial schedule has been released. The schedule has the home games at HVCC, but it can easily be adjusted to read Frear Park once the deal is completed. This schedule does not include the annual Plattsburgh/Beekmantown trip, which would be set for December 3-4, and the Mohawks tournament at Union College, which would be December 26-27.

This is the schedule that is already out:

December 12: CBA.
December 17: Bethlehem.
December 23: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa.
January 7: @ Albany Academy.
January 13: Shenendehowa.
January 14: Capital District Jets.
January 27: Saratoga.
January 28: @ Guilderville.
February 1: Queensbury.
February 10: Senior Night vs. Albany Academy.
February 11: @ Bethlehem.

More dates and games will be added.
===============================================
Toronto pitcher Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth) pitched the 9th inning in the Blue Jays' 11-1 blowout over Baltimore Monday. Gage actually entered the game in the 8th, and finished the game, giving up 1 hit with 1 strikeout and a hit batsman.

Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) went just four innings for Atlanta vs. Washington on Monday, giving up four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out three. Anderson didn't figure in the decision, as Atlanta ran their winning streak to 12 in beating the Nationals, 9-5.

News & notes

 High school sports season is officially over after state titles were decided on Saturday.

Section II had 8 teams between baseball & softball left in state play, and ended the day with 4 state championships.

In softball, Ichabod Crane won its first state crown since 2018, when they & Fort Ann were the last Section II teams to win championships. This year, the Lady Riders were joined by Class C champion Greenwich.

Most folks figured Troy High would join them, but the dream season came to a shocking end on Saturday afternoon, as Vestal ended Troy's 19 game winning streak, 4-2. However, the Golden Bears would, in turn, lose to Webster Schroeder in the state finals later in the day.

On the baseball side, Averill Park (Class A) & Chatham (Class C) captured state titles.

Congratulations to all four teams.

As for Troy, they'll be back, as Coach Sean Geisel has a strong nucleus returning, including ace lefthander Olivia DeCitise. I think the theme in 2023 is "unfinished business".
=============================================
The Albany Patroons, with their backs against the wall, eliminated the Atlantic City Gambits in convincing fashion Saturday night, 109-86, to advance to the TBL Eastern Conference Finals.

The Pats will next face a team from Huntsville, Alabama, with all three games in the series taking place at the Washington Avenue Armory to save money on transportation costs. The Patroons will also pay for hotel accomodations for the Huntsville players & coaches. The games will be Thursday & Friday at 7 pm, with game 3, if needed, on Saturday.
=============================================
If you thought COVID-19 was no longer an issue, think again.

Tri-City Valleycats manager Pete Incaviglia had to isolate himself at home in the Pittsburgh area, and, while not a coincidence, the 'Cats dropped four straight, including the first two games of their series vs. Quebec.

Incaviglia returned on Sunday, and the 'Cats took the Capitales to extras before ending the losing streak, 7-6. Tri-City sits in 3rd place in the Eastern division of the Frontier League.
==============================================
The Albany Empire, meanwhile, have now dropped two straight after falling to San Antonio, 59-56, on Saturday afternoon. No one saw that coming, as the Gunslingers had not won a game prior to Saturday.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. The Gunslingers were a franchise in the original USFL in the 80's.
==============================================
LaSalle track & field ace Getachew "Gitch" Hayes ended his varsity career with a state title over the weekend. Hayes will run for North Carolina for the next four years, and we'll likely see him in major events like the Millrose Games, and, dare we think it, the Olympics, before his college career is over.

In other LaSalle news, while nothing has been confirmed as yet, a source at Hudson Valley Community College has informed ye scribe that the college is closing Robert Conway Ice Arena at the McDonough Field House.

This leaves LaSalle hockey without a home rink for the 2022-3 season and beyond. The source said RPI can't rent the Houston Field House rink, and there would be scheduling conflicts with the varsity hockey teams there. Knickerbocker Ice Arena in Lansingburgh is not an option, as the city would rather wait for the temperatures to go below freezing to open the rink in the winter. As for Frear Park? LaSalle played their home games there in the shortened 2020-1 season, and it was, by all accounts, a disaster.

We have reached out to LaSalle coach Tim Flanigan for comment, and are waiting on a response.

News & notes

 The Tri-City Valleycats return home tonight after dropping 2 of 3 to the Washington Wild Things. The Wild Things got 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take down Tri-City, 10-9.
=======================================
Back at Bruno Stadium, the 518 Futures game took place, along with a home run derby, on Thursday, as the morning rains gave way to afternoon sunshine.

40 players in all, juniors & seniors alike, took part in the game. Hoosick Falls' Jake Sparks won the initial home run derby, while Team Stripes walked off Team Stars, 8-7. Troy High's Mike Kennedy started for Team Stars. LaSalle senior Eddie Yamin was a contributor as well, as WNYT's Ashley Miller narrates the highlights:

It's just too bad the game wasn't on TV so everyone could watch.
=========================================
A heads up to local baseball fans: tonight's Mets-Angels game is streaming on Apple TV+, the Mets' 2nd appearance on Apple this season. A scenario like this makes the Mets pound foolish for giving up their radio network after the 2018 season.
=========================================
It's the 2nd weekend in June, but fall sports schedules are coming together at Troy High.

Today, we'll look at the women's swimming & diving schedule, as Troy will be united again with Tamarac & Averill Park, looking to improve on a 4-4 ledger in 2021:

September 7: Home opener vs. Shaker.
September 14: @ Bethlehem.
September 19: Guilderland.
September 23: @ Shenendehowa.
September 28: Schenectady.
October 3: @ Albany.
October 7: Senior Day vs. Ballston Spa.
October 12: @ Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

We'll have the rest of the fall lineup as it becomes final.

News & notes

 There will not be a state title in men's lacrosse in Section II.

Class C champion Burnt Hills was overpowered and outplayed by Manhasset on Wednesday night at Casey Stadium on the UAlbany campus, 16-5. The Spartans trailed, 10-2, at halftime, and never really got back in the game.

The women's squads from both schools meet at SUNY-Cortland tomorrow.
=========================================
The Washington Wild Things walked off the Tri-City Valleycats in 10 innings, 4-3, on Wednesday. The 'Cats got homers from Carson McClusker, Juan Silverio, and Brantley Bell, but the usually dependable closer, Trey Cochran-Gill, ended up with the loss after his wild pitch plated the winning run in the 10th.

While Tri-City finishes their series tonight in Pennsylvania, the 518 Futures game, scheduled for Bruno Stadium, could wind up rained out if today's forecast remains accurate. It's been raining off and on this morning, and thunderstorms are on the docket for this afternoon.
============================================
Atlanta's Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) picked up his 5th win of the year Wednesday, going six innings in beating Oakland, 13-2. Anderson gave up both Oakland runs, walked two, and struck out six while scattering six hits over the six innings. Kevin Smith (Columbia) was inserted into the game by Oakland manager Mark Kotsay as a pinch-hitter for Elvis Andrus in the 8th inning, but went 0-1, lowering his season average to .188. I've a feeling they'll send him to the minors soon.
=============================================
Liz Kuhlkin (Schalmont) won her third pro bowling title Wednesday, capturing the PWBA Long Island Classic. Kuhlkin ran the table in the stepladder format TV finals. Have to believe a certain two sport star at Troy High was watching, as Olivia DeCitise has made it known she's interested in going to Nebraska, where Kuhlkin bowled in college.

It used to be that Saratoga Splash was a brand of flavored water.

The Splash are an AAU team that got headlines today for the wrong reasons, as an unnamed player assaulted a referee after a game that the Splash lost on Sunday at Halfmoon as part of the Zero Gravity event. The cowardly cager ran off before he could be disciplined. Seems the Splash are the bad boys of local AAU.

News & notes

 The Albany Patroons swept the Atlantic City Gambits during the regular season. If they thought Tuesday's opening game in the TBL playoffs would be more of the same, they were mistaken by the end of the night.

Atlantic City pulled what amounts to an upset in game 1, 91-83, but the scene shifts back to Albany and the Washington Avenue Armory on Friday night, with game 3 on Saturday. Devon Dillard led 4 Pats in double figures with 21 points.
=========================================
The Tri-City Valleycats defeated the Washington Wild Things, 9-2, on Tuesday. Jesus Lujano homered for the 'Cats to back up starter Joey Gonzalez (2-0), who went 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. There was a rain delay of about 48 minutes in the home 4th inning, but Washington didn't do much to capitalize.
==========================================
Atlanta Hawks guard Kevin Huerter (Shenendehowa) will be hosting summer basketball camps at the Impact Athletic Center in Halfmoon July 11-15 and August 1-5. For Huerter, it's all about giving back to the 518, as others have before him, like fellow Shen alumnus Greg Koubek.
==========================================
Shen's other gift to Atlanta, Ian Anderson, pitches tonight for the Braves against the skidding Oakland A's, who've lost 7 in a row after dropping a 3-2 decision to the Braves on Tuesday. This will be Anderson's 1st career start vs. the A's.
==========================================
Last winter, the Toronto Blue Jays traded infielder Kevin Smith (Columbia) to Oakland. Now, they have another 518 alumnus on their roster.

Relief pitcher Matt Gage (Broadalbin-Perth/Siena) made his major league debut Tuesday morning for Toronto in the 9th inning of the Blue Jays' 8-0 win over Kansas City. Gage needed just 13 pitches (2 strikeouts) to finish the game.

Troy High 2022 football schedule

 After a 1-7 campaign in 2021, Troy High will look to rebound on the gridiron this fall.

The season opens September 9 at Albany. Homecoming will be week 7, October 21, vs. Columbia, with Senior Night the following week vs. Amsterdam.

As of now, however, they have not yet announced a new head coach to replace John Barber, who was fired after the season ended last year. While you can click on the link above to get a better look, let's lay out the schedule:

Week 1, Sept. 10: @ Albany.
Week 2, Sept. 16: Home opener vs. South Glens Falls.
Week 3, Sept. 23: @ LaSalle.
Week 4, Sept. 30: Averill Park.
Week 5, Oct. 7: @ Niskayuna.
Week 6, Oct. 14: @ Mohonasen.
Week 7, Oct. 21: Homecoming vs. Amsterdam.
Week 8, Oct. 28: Senior Night vs. Columbia.

It's way too early to make any projections, as training camp is still a few weeks away, but this year has to be better.

Edit, 7/26: The final two games have been reversed, as per Schedule Galaxy. Amsterdam will close the season at home, and have their Senior Night vs. LaSalle.

News & notes

 As the state regionals head into championship weekend this weekend, the Perfect Game Collegiate League quietly began its 2022 campaign a week or two ago. Unfortunately, due to space considerations, the local papers can't publish the league standings at the present time.

On Monday, the Albany Dutchmen continued their hot start, defeating Saugerties, 7-6, in 10 innings Troy High grad Danny Rogers, now at Rutgers, won it for the Dutchmen with a walk-off 2 run homer in the bottom of the 10th.

The Dutchmen (4-0), who play their home games in Guilderland at Keenholts Park, return on Wednesday to host Oneonta.
=======================================
After a 19-14 loss to Trois-Rivieres on Sunday, the Tri-City Valleycats return to Washington, Pennsylvania for a rematch with the Wild Things tonight. Washington won 2 of 3 in the last series between the two clubs, so Tri-City is looking for revenge.

On Monday, the 'Cats traded reserve infielder Dennicher Carrasco to Lancaster of the Atlantic League, likely for cash.
========================================
Albany Academy's golfing wunderkind, Kennedy Swedick, captured the state title in women's golf on Monday at McGregor Links in Wilton. Swedick finished at even par for the 72 holes. Academy finished 2nd in the team competition, behind the Ursuline School.
========================================
We would be remiss if we didn't get this next item in.

Troy High senior lefty Mike Kennedy was named Gatorade's NY Player of the Year last week. Kennedy is committed to LSU for next season, but that could all change, as he's gotten the attention of pro scouts ahead of next month's MLB Entry Draft. The only other Section II player on the watch list is Ballston Spa grad Luke Gold, currently at Boston College. Luke's sister, Ana, has been tearing it up for Duke in ACC softball. I can only imagine what would happen if the two schools met for a baseball-softball doubleheader.

News & notes

 The Freihofer's Run For Women isn't all the way back to its traditional space on the calendar, but after last year's race took place in September, runners from across the country and the globe gathered in Albany on Saturday for the 2022 edition.

Allie Ostrander, from Seattle, won the race in 15 minutes and 48 seconds, 23 seconds ahead of runner-up Allie Kiefler, from Austin, Texas. The highest finishing local runner was Emily Bush of Saratoga, who finished 6th.
=========================================
The Carolina Cobras seem to love playing in Albany.

Returning to MVP Arena for the first time since upsetting the Albany Empire in week 1 of the National Arena League season, the Cobras held off a late Albany rally in the 4th quarter to escape with a 58-50 win on Saturday night. The Empire now sit 2 games behind the Cobras, with the two losses making all the difference in the world.
===========================================
Vanderbilt grad Kumar Rocker was the main attraction Saturday at Bruno Stadium, but he lasted just four innings, giving up a 2 run homer in the 2nd inning. However, the Tri-City Valleycats' offense & bullpen bailed him out, scoring 10 unanswered runs to clinch yet another series, beating Trois-Rivieres, 10-2, before just over 4,000 fans, including major league scouts. Rocker finished with 6 strikeouts. The teams will finish the series this afternoon at 5 pm.
============================================
Traditionally, Section II teams tend to falter when they reach the state regional finals in spring sports. It just happens.

To this point, only one Section II team remains in men's lacrosse, and that would be Class C champion Burnt Hills, which took a 4-2 lead over Pelham Memorial at halftime at Shaker, then tacked on 8 more goals in the 2nd half to punch their ticket to the state final four with a 12-5 win. The reward for the Spartans is a de facto home game at UAlbany's Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in the state semifinals on Wednesday, where they'll face Manhasset. Game time is 6:30 pm.
===============================================
The rest of Saturday's action:

Softball:

Class AA regional final: Liverpool 10, Saratoga 4.
Class A regional final: Troy 9, New Hartford 3. Olivia DeCitise allowed three runs in the 3rd inning, but got those runs back herself with a three run homer, her first of the year, in the 6th to ice it after Troy retook the lead in the 4th with 4 runs. DeCitise finished with 16 strikeouts, bringing her season total to 295.

News & notes

 There won't be any semi-pro football in the 518 this season, for the second time in three years.

This time, though, the Troy Fighting Irish, who played most of their home games at Watervliet High last year, since coach Ryan Job was also the football coach at Watervliet, are taking a year's break due to a transfer of ownership. New owner Rod Dukes plans to have the team back on the field in 2023, and maybe back in town. We'll see.
============================================
The Albany Patroons will open their playoff series at Atlantic City on Tuesday night, with game 2 set for Friday at the Washington Avenue Armory. Game 3, if needed, would be next Saturday. This format, with the top seed playing game 1 on the road, is meant to save on travel expenses.
============================================
WWE Hall of Famer and best selling author Mick Foley will be in town on Wednesday as part of a speaking tour, which brings him to The Linda at WAMC studios on Central Avenue. Showtime is scheduled for 8 pm. Foley has previously done commercial advertising in the 518 for the now-defunct Albany Attack lacrosse team. It'll be interesting to see what he has to say.
============================================
High school baseball is not done with Bruno Stadium just yet.

The 518 Futures game will be played at The Joe on Thursday, with a 6:30 first pitch. Tickets are $5, and can be had at the box office.
=============================================
While all the attention at Bruno Stadium tonight will be on the pro debut of Vanderbilt star Kumar Rocker, who was drafted by the Mets last year, the Valleycats' series vs. the Trois-Rivieres Aigles (pronounced "eagles") is a quiet homecoming for Mohonasen graduate Matthew Rusch, the Aigles' manager.

Friday, the 'Cats overcame deficits of 1-0 & 2-1 to defeat the Aigles, 4-2, before just over 3200 fans on Fireworks Night. Troy High softball ace Olivia DeCitise threw out the first pitch, and the 'Cats used three consecutive doubles in the 6th inning to beat the Aigles.

Valleycats GM Matt Callahan has said that scouts from at least 15 major league clubs, including the Yankees, are planning on being at the game tonight. I'd imagine it's to take a look at Rocker, but players on both teams will be looking to impress as well.
===================================================
Time to update the state regional schedules for softball, baseball, & lacrosse for today:

===================================
Oakland infielder Kevin Smith (Columbia) went 0-4 in a 7-2 loss to Boston on Friday. Smith is currently batting just .194 on the season for the A's, who acquired him from Toronto in the offseason in the trade that sent Matt Chapman north of the border.

News & notes

 Jamel Horton, previously with UAlbany, will transfer to Mississippi State of the SouthEastern Conference (SEC) to use his final year of eligibility in the 2022-23 season. Horton is figuring on increasing his chances in the 2023 NBA draft by playing in one of the "Power 5" conferences, and it's well known, of course, that players from mid-major schools like UAlbany usually get shafted. We'll see Horton on the SEC Network, ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU next season.
========================================
Shenendehowa product Ian Anderson gave up 5 runs on 10 hits with 9 strikeouts and a walk, and Atlanta's offense did the rest, as the Braves beat Colorado, 13-6, in Denver. As you might expect in the thin air of Denver, Anderson's ERA took a hit, as it jumped to 4.70 after giving up 2 home runs in his six innings.

Atlanta picked up a game on the first place Mets, who lost, 2-0, to the Los Angeles Dodgers, ending a 6 game winning streak. Former Shaker standout and Yankee Tommy Kahnle now pitches for the Dodgers, but didn't see action on Thursday.
==========================================
Entering play on Thursday, Troy High's softball team was ranked #2 in the state. Imagine what'll happen if they run the table and win the state championship.

Sean Geisel's Flying Horses made it 2-for-2 at Luther Forest in Malta, needing just 5 innings to crush Massena, 16-1. Six runs in the first, highlighted by Gianna Barringer's 1st career grand slam, were all Olivia DeCitise needed. The junior ace fanned 13, and survived taking a comebacker off her stomach in the 4th inning, this after getting hit by a pitch while batting earlier in the game.

Next stop is Carrier Park in East Syracuse on Saturday, where Section III champ New Hartford awaits. Before that, DeCitise will in fact throw out the first pitch at Bruno Stadium tonight prior to the Tri-City Valleycats game vs. Trois Rivieres.
============================================
Class B champion Ichabod Crane has done Troy one better, as they're already the #1 team in the state, and showed why in shutting out Peru, 12-0. The game ended after six innings, as the Lady Riders added runs in the home 5th inning. Kari Graziano twirled a 4 hitter, and struck out 10. Ichabod Crane will travel to SUNY-Potsdam Saturday to play undefeated Canton.
=============================================
Speaking of the Valleycats, they split a doubleheader vs. Sussex County on Thursday at The Joe.

Tri-City got home runs from Brad Zunica, Juan Santana, Juan Silverio, and Willy Garcia to put down the Miners, 10-4, in the opener. Sussex County came back to salvage the nightcap, 6-2.
==============================================
More Troy High: Alex Ordonez was one of the few bright spots for Troy's outdoor track team, and he won a qualifier in the high jump in state competition at Shenendehowa on Thursday with a jump of 6 feet, 2 inches. State championships will be decided at Cicero-North Syracuse next weekend.
===============================================
The rest of Thursday's action:

Baseball:

Class A regionals: Averill Park 3, Cortland 2 (9 innings). The Warriors will play Massena on Saturday at East Side Rec in Saratoga.

Class C:

Chatham 14, Ticonderoga 3. Chatham will play Norwood-Norfolk next, also at East Side Rec.

Also Saturday:

Class AA: Shenendehowa vs. Fayetteville-Manillus at Shuttleworth Park (Amsterdam).
Class B: Schuylerville vs. Peru at SUNY-Plattsburgh.
Class D: Germantown vs. Chapel Field Christian at East Side Rec.

News & notes

 Shaker High grad Jeff Hoffman and the Cincinnati Reds split their two game interleague series with the Boston Red Sox, as Boston beat Cincinnati, 7-1, on Wednesday. Hoffman pitched the 8th inning for the Reds, giving up three runs and three walks on one hit, with a wild pitch and two strikeouts.
=======================================
And speaking of 518 alumni, Ian Anderson (Shenendehowa) will be on the mound for Atlanta tonight in Denver against the Colorado Rockies as the two teams begin a four game series. Anderson (3-3) has been up and down this season, often undone by the Braves' bullpen.
=========================================
Wednesday's sectional scoreboard:

Men's lacrosse:

Class A finals:

Shenendehowa 15, Guilderland 9.

Class D finals:

Schuylerville 18, Stillwater-Mechanicville 8.

State tournament schedule update:

Baseball:

Section II Class A champion Averill Park will play Cortland tonight, but the site still has not been identified.

Men's lacrosse:

Class A: Shen will play either Scarsdale or Kingston Saturday at Shaker. Game time is 12:30 pm.

Class D: Schuylerville will play either O'Neill or Briarcliff, also at Shaker. This will lead off the quadruple-header at 10 am.

Women's lacrosse sub-regionals:

Class C:

Burnt Hills 20, Saugerties 9. MK Lescault led the way for the Spartans with 7 goals. Burnt Hills moves on to play Tappan Zee on Saturday.

Class D:

Schuylerville 14, O'Neill 7. The Black Horses will play Bronxville on Saturday.

News & notes

 There's nothing like home cooking to cure a team's ills. Just ask the Tri-City Valleycats.

Tri-City got homers from Jesus Lujano, Juan Santana, and Denis Phipps to push past Sussex County, 7-5, on Tuesday night at Bruno Stadium. Provided the weather cooperates, the series continues tonight.

When Trois-Rivieres comes in from Canada on Friday, the 'Cats will also have some extra special guests in the house.

It was announced on Tuesday that the team will honor Troy High's Section II Class A champion softball team, regardless of what happens Thursday vs. Massena at Luther Forest. Team mascot Southpaw will pose for selfies with the players and likely Coach Sean Geisel. I think we'll see ace Olivia DeCitise throw out a first pitch, don't you think? Makes up for the fact that the city discontinued the Flag Day parade three years ago due to lack of funds.

Best of luck to the Lady Horses tomorrow.
=================================
Tuesday's sectional scoreboard:

Men's lacrosse finals:

Class B:

Niskayuna 14, Ballston Spa 13.

Class C:

Burnt Hills 17, Glens Falls 4. The Spartans sweep the Class C titles.

Women's lacrosse:

Class A sub-regional:

Shenendehowa 10, Kingston 9.

Class B sub-regional:

Queensbury 15, Warwick 10.

Regional pairings:

Women's Class A:

Shenendehowa vs. Suffern, Saturday at Hendrick Hudson High, 10 am.

Women's Class B:

Queensbury vs. John Jay, Saturday at 12:30 pm at Hendrick Hudson High.

Men's Class B:

Niskayuna vs. Rye or Warwick, Saturday at 3 at Shaker.

Men's Class C:

Burnt Hills vs. Pelham Memorial or the Section IX champion, not yet identified, Saturday at 5:30 pm at Shaker.

News & notes

 We all know the 518 is largely Yankee country. Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro grew up a Yankee fan, and, today, leads the Royals ...
