News & notes

 While I am not privy to overnight Nielsen ratings, I'd imagine that Saturday's NCAA women's basketball doubleheader on ABC outpointed the launch of the UFL on Fox.

Nearly 14,000 fans in Albany were treated to a pair of games that did leave some room for doubt, but that doubt was washed away by the time each game had ended.

In Saturday's opener, LSU and coach Kim Mulkey, ignoring a Washington Post profile on Mulkey, defeated UCLA, 78-69. Flau'jae Johnson led the Tigers with 12 points, and Angel Reese, who had been the most celebrated women's player in the country until Caitlin Clark came along, added 11.

In the nightcap, Clark led all 5 Iowa starters in double figures with 29 points, and added 15 assists, as the Hawkeyes, dismissed Colorado, 89-68, pulling away in the 2nd half after leading, 48-35, at halftime. Shelomi Sanders, daughter of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, did not play due to a coach's decision.

Iowa & LSU, who met in the women's title game a year ago, will meet tomorrow to decide who advances to the Final Four (ESPN, 7 pm). If Iowa loses, Clark will join the US Olympic women's team.

News & notes

 Christian Brothers Academy is looking for a new varsity basketball coach.

Dave Doemel, a 1971 graduate who led the Brothers to 7 Section II titles between 2003-12, announced his retirement Friday after 27 years as head coach. Doemel & CBA won 1 state title, in 2010, and a star player from that team, Galal Cancer, is the current junior varsity coach. Doemel leaves as the all-time winningest coach in school basketball history, having passed local legend Bill Telasky in 2019, finishing with 415 wins.
===============================================
The post-Olivia DeCitise era in Troy softball began Friday as business as usual.

Lauren Matthews pitched a complete game, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits (2 earned) with 7 strikeouts. Gianna Barringer went 2-3 with a homer, and Vanessa Quinn went 3-3 with 3 RBI as Troy defeated Cohoes, 7-3.

The two teams will meet again in Cohoes on April 22. The final Suburban Council season for Troy begins Wednesday---weather permitting---against Ballston Spa at 11 am.
==========================================
Only one high school baseball game was reported today, and that, too, was a non-league game that saw Waterford defeat Rensselaer, 3-2. Today's games are either underway or will soon be.
==========================================
Notre Dame freshman Hannah Hidalgo may be blaming herself for the Fighting Irish's exit from the NCAA women's Sweet 16 on Friday at MVP Arena, but for the wrong reasons.

Media reports trumpeted the fact that Hidalgo, who finished with 10 points, missed chunks of the 2nd & 3rd quarters to have a nose ring removed. According to NCAA guidelines, she's not supposed to wear the jewelry during the game for safety reasons, but she had all season long, and then, prior to Friday's game, she asked if she could cover the ring, and was allowed to do so, only for game officials to reverse their position, after getting word from someone higher up, and had Hidalgo remove the ring.
==========================================
The rest of Friday's action:

Baseball:

George Washington 12, St. Bonaventure 8. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena/VCU) went 1-4 with an RBI, a walk, and a run scored.

News & notes

 The city of Albany has already enacted traffic detours, effective through April 2, due to the NCAA women's tournament in town through Monday. Certain CDTA lines, including the blue BusPlus buses, will be detoured during this period.

If you were unable to acquire tickets for the four days, don't worry. The games will air on ESPN today, Sunday, & Monday, and on WTEN tomorrow.
===============================================
Wins have been hard to come by for Siena baseball this season, but they opened their weekend series with Quinnipiac with a 15-10 win on Thursday.

The series resumes with a doubleheader today at 12 noon.

George Washington, coming off a sweep of Canisius last weekend, dropped an 8-7 decision to Towson on Wednesday. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena/VCU) went 2-2 with 4 walks and an RBI. The Revolutionaries will open a series today with St. Bonaventure, beginning at 3 pm.

News & notes

 When Iowa and their superstar, Caitlin Clark, roll into town tomorrow for the NCAA Women's Sweet 16, Caitlin, at least, will have an escort that can show her around the city. If only because he grew up here.

Connor McCaffrey, son of Iowa men's coach Fran McCaffrey, spent his early years here when his father coached at Siena.

There will be a pool on how many times ABC's cameras will focus on the younger McCaffrey during Saturday's game vs. Colorado.
=====================================================
If ye scribe had enough time this morning, I could've notified WROW morning host Ben Patten that today's Mets-Brewers game has been postponed to tomorrow in anticipation of rain in NYC. Ben has been flying solo since his last co-host, Monica Velez, left town 14 months ago. Suffice to say, Ben needs a fact-checker.
======================================================
Round one of baseball's Battle of The Cadets goes to LaSalle.

Jesse Braverman's club bested Albany Academy, 6-1, on Tuesday night on a neutral site in Queensbury, in a game delayed two hours so the grounds crew to ensure the field was playable.

No high school scores were reported from Wednesday as of press time. Maybe tomorrow.
======================================================
Wednesday's college scoreboard:

News & notes

 Siena College now has to hire a new women's basketball coach, too.

Less than a week after men's coach Carmen Maciariello was let go, Jim Jabir, the women's coach, announced his retirement after three seasons into his 2nd stint with Siena (he previously coached from 1987-90). What may have brought the decision forward wasn't so much losing so many players to the transfer portal after being eliminated in the MAAC semifinals nearly 2 weeks ago, but that his wife, Angela, has left Siena to take a job at Stanford University. The Jabirs are relocating to California. In addition to his two tours at Siena, Jabir's resume also includes stops at Providence, Buffalo State, Dayton, Marquette, & Florida Atlantic.

WNYT's Rodger Wyland, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, is touting former UAlbany & Patroons coach Will Brown, fresh off a season with the College of St. Rose, as Jabir's successor, with former Syracuse star Gerry McNamara a front-runner for the men's job.

Again, Siena really doesn't need a national coaching search, not when the answer's in their own backyard. Plus, assistant coach Terry Primm deserves a promotion.
===============================================
LaSalle grad Caleb Smith is the latest 518 product to land a national gig.

Smith will be part of the summer season of ABC's The Bachelorette, it was announced Tuesday. The former Cadet played his college ball at Towson, but played professionally with Iowa of the Arena Football League.

Stay tuned.
===================================================
Ex-Tri-City Valleycat Tony Kemp has found a new home, back in the American League.

The well-traveled Kemp signed with Baltimore on Tuesday, a week after Cincinnati cut him. One wonders why Houston gave up on him in the first place......
====================================================
Tuesday's college scoreboard:

Baseball:

Russell Sage split a doubleheader with St. John Fisher, winning the 1st game, 13-10, but losing the nightcap, 10-4.

Siena 9, Fairleigh Dickinson 7 (10 innings).

Men's lacrosse:

Nazareth 22, Russell Sage 10.
Tufts 24, Union 5.

Women's lacrosse:

Colby 14, Union 10.

Softball:

Gustavus Adolphus 15, Union 6.
Siena split a doubleheader with Delaware State, winning the opener, 1-0, then losing the 2nd game, 11-6.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh 6, Union 0.
RPI swept a doubleheader from Russell Sage, 7-1 & 9-1.
=============================================
Troy/CBA/Columbia swim coach Jeff Maxwell was named Coach of The Year by the Times-Union, after leading the Flying Devil Brothers to five gold medals and a silver at the sectionals last month. Congratulations to coach Maxwell.
===============================================
The only high school result reported as of press time saw Cohoes defeat Albany, 15-4, in women's lacrosse on Tuesday. Coverage should pick up as league play begins in earnest during Easter vacation, which begins Friday.
=================================================
Shenendehowa grad Jake Reinisch, son of Troy AD Paul Reinisch, is off to a good start in his senior season at Wake Forest.

Reinisch has started all 23 games so far, batting .305 with 5 homers and 25 RBI. Reinisch, who was a first baseman at Shen, is a outfielder/DH with the Demon Deacons.

Weather postponement update, 3/26

 Saturday's post-season snowstorm has left a number of Section II teams unable to begin their seasons today. Where possible, some matches or games have already been rescheduled.

Men's tennis:

Ballston Spa @ Troy has been rescheduled for April 16.

Niskayuna @ Saratoga has been reset for Thursday.

Men's lacrosse postponements:

Colonial Council:

Ichabod Crane @ Lansingburgh.

Mohonasen-Schenectady vs. Voorheesville.

Non-league:

South Glens Falls @ Colonie.

Baseball:

Averill Park @ Colonie.

Softball:

Mechanicville @ Saratoga.

Wednesday's game between Schuylerville & Troy has been rescheduled for April 27.

Also, today's baseball game between LaSalle & Albany Academy at the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury, scheduled for 4:30 pm, has had its start time pushed back 2 hours to 6:30 pm to, presumably, allow more time for the field to be ready.

News & notes

 We are looking for results for Monday's non-league men's lacrosse match between LaSalle & Valley Central in Montgomery. I would suspect the game might've been cancelled.

LaSalle's baseball team is scheduled to open its season today vs. Albany Academy at the Adirondack Sports Complex, with 1st pitch scheduled for 4:30 pm.
================================================
You know you've arrived in mainstream sports media when you and your team are being accused of getting preferential treatment from referees.

In other words, Iowa's Caitlin Clark caught some heat Monday night after fans complained that she was complaining to game officials about fouls not being called. It's part of the game.

Leading by just 2 points at halftime, Iowa defeated West Virginia, 64-54, to advance to the Sweet 16 and a date with Colorado, Saturday at MVP Arena.

Speaking of which, Saturday's doubleheader at MVP Arena in the Albany 2 division will be seen on WTEN, starting with UCLA vs. LSU at 1 pm, with Colorado-Iowa to follow. The winners will then meet next Monday.

ESPN's Friday doubleheader is:

Notre Dame vs. Oregon State, 2:30 pm.
Indiana vs. South Carolina, 5 pm.

Monday's local college scoreboard:

Baseball:

DePauw 12, Union 2.

Softball:

Wisconsin-Oshkosh 4, Union 0.

Men's lacrosse:

Delhi 16, Cobleskill 3.
==============================================
The Tri-City Valleycats are hoping that signing some local talent can help boost attendance this season.

To that end, the 'Cats signed pitcher Arlo Marynzcak (Bethlehem/Siena) on Monday, one of three players signed by the team for the 2024 Frontier League season, which begins in May.

Troy High 2024 men's lacrosse schedule

 Troy High embarks on an independent schedule in men's lacrosse for the 2nd straight season this year, as they're transitioning out of the Suburban Council. While games can be played in the rain, player & faculty safety has become more of a priority in recent years, so dates are subject to change.

15: @ Schenectady-Mohonasen (5 pm).

16: @ Albany (4:15 pm).

News & notes

 As noted over at The Land of Whatever yesterday, former WTMM host Brian Cady did not work his Sunday morning DJ shift at WROW this weekend. Cady, who has been the host of Albany Street since October 2022, and is the PA voice of the Amsterdam Mohawks of the Perfect Game League and the Section II women's basketball sectionals, as well as the NYSPHSAA tournaments at Hudson Valley Community College, hasn't produced a new episode of Street since last month, due to various other commitments, and we have to assume he was snowbound in Amsterdam yesterday. Otherwise, he may very well have been cut loose by Albany Broadcasting. We'll keep an eye on that.
===================================================
It appears that Saturday's lacrosse match between LaSalle & Monroe Woodbury was cancelled at the last minute, since no score has been submitted to local media. The Cadets are due to go on the road today for a non-league match before league play starts next week.
====================================================
Belated congratulations going out to New York University women's basketball coach Meg Barber, a graduate of Hoosick Falls, who led the Violets to the NCAA Division III championship on March 16, defeating Smith College, 51-41, in Columbus, Ohio. Meg is being profiled today in the Albany Times-Union.
======================================================
NCAA notes:

Joseph Girard III (Glens Falls/Syracuse) had 13 points in 35 minutes, helping Clemson advance to the Sweet 16 with a 72-64 win over Baylor on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers will play Arizona on Thursday night.

However, August Mahoney (Albany Academy) had just 7 points as Yale was eliminated by San Diego State, 85-57, on Sunday night. The game was delayed a half hour due to earlier games running long, as tip time on TBS wasn't until 10:10 pm. The Aztecs will play defending champion Connecticut on Thursday.

LSU & South Carolina have punched their tickets to Albany for the Women's Sweet 16, and Iowa could join them.

South Carolina awaits the winner of tonight's game between Oklahoma & Indiana (6:30 pm, ESPN2), while LSU, the defending champions, will find out who they'll play next as Creighton & UCLA will play tonight (8:30 pm, ESPN2). Iowa already knows who they'll play if they win tonight. The Lady Hawkeyes will play West Virginia (8 pm, ESPN), with the winner to play Colorado on Saturday at MVP Arena (time TBA).
==================================================
Sunday's local college scoreboard:

Baseball:

George Washington 9, Canisius 1. Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena/VCU) went 2-5 with 2 RBI & a run scored. Young went 4-11 in the series to get his average back up to .328 after a recent slump.

Davidson swept Siena, 23-1 (7 innings).

News & notes

 There won't be a homecoming for Saratoga grad Dolly Cairns.

Cairns & Florida Gulf Coast gave it a ride, all the way to the wire, but fell to Oklahoma, 73-70, in the 1st round of the Women's NCAA tournament on Saturday. Cairns finished with 10 points and 2 rebounds.

On the men's side, August Mahoney (Albany Academy) had 14 points, and was a key cog in Yale's 1st round win over Auburn on Friday. The Bulldogs will play San Diego State in the nightcap tonight (9:40 pm, TBS).
===================================================
Today's UAlbany-Lowell baseball game was cancelled due to weather. The two teams played a doubleheader Friday, and split. Albany finally won a game, 11-3, in the nightcap.

News & notes

 UAlbany's women's basketball team was one and done in the Women's NIT.

The Lady Danes fell to Colgate, 64-50, with Kayla Cooper leading Albany with 22 points. Meghan Huerter added 11. Colgate moves on to play Huerter's former team at Providence, led by Olivia Olson (Niskayuna), on Monday.
===========================================
Jillian Huerter, Meghan's sister, has entered the transfer portal after 1 season at Rutgers. That will lead to speculation she could reunite with her sister at UAlbany, or play for their father's alma mater, Siena, next season.

Stay tuned.

One more area name to watch for this weekend, this time in the Women's NCAA tournament.

Dorothy "Dolly" Cairns (Saratoga) quietly transferred from Rhode Island to Florida Gulf Coast for her senior season. FGCU will play Oklahoma tomorrow afternoon (check listings for which ESPN channel carries the game, or if it airs on WTEN).
==============================================
LaSalle was scheduled to open its men's lacrosse season tomorrow at Sutton Field vs. Monroe-Woodbury, with a 12 noon start. An incoming winter storm may change those plans, so check with LaSalle before you head out tomorrow morning.
===============================================
Kevin Huerter (Shen/Maryland) is out for a bit for the Sacramento Kings after a shoulder injury sustained on Monday vs. Memphis. Huerter dislocated his left shoulder, and also has a torn labrum. Team doctors for the Kings didn't indicate a timetable for return, with the playoffs a month away.
===============================================
Thursday's college scoreboard:

Baseball:

Endicatt 5, Cobleskill 3.

Softball:

Buffalo State 12, Union 9.
Cobleskill 5, Fort Lauderdale 4.
Amherst 13, Union 0.
Sacred Heart 3, Siena 2.

Earlier today, George Washington defeated Canisius, 7-3. Brett Young (Siena/VCU/Albany Academy) was 0-4 with a run scored.

Thursday, March 21, 2024

News & notes

 At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Siena AD John D'Argenio said the school was looking to hire an outside consulting firm to help them search for their next coach.

WNYT's Rodger Wyland, writing in today's Albany Times-Union, doesn't think that's the answer. Long the voice of UAlbany basketball & football, Wyland is touting Will Brown as the next coach, adding credibility and credence to the rumors that have circulated since former coach Carmen Maciariello was given the vote of confidence by D'Argenio last month.
===================================================
Speaking of UAlbany, star guard Amar'e Marshall has followed Jonathan Beagle into the transfer portal. Marshall was 2nd on the Great Danes in scoring at 16.7 points per game, behind leading scorer Sebastian Thomas.

Over at Siena, in addition to Mason Courtney entering the portal, three more Saints followed. Redshirt sophomore Giovanni Emejuru, sophomore Sveinn Birgisson, and freshman walk-on Carson White, a forward. In this case, I'd think they're pressing the panic button too soon, not waiting for school administration to find a new coach.

Meanwhile, Ahniysha Jackson will use her final year of eligibility next season at Siena, after seeing five teammates, and one that didn't play at all, use the portal earlier this week. The Albany High grad will graduate in May, but will be back in the lineup this winter.
=====================================================
If you were planning on traveling to Lowell, Massachusetts, to see UAlbany's softball team take on UMass Lowell, with Troy High grad Olivia DeCitise in her first season in Lowell, you're going to have to wait a bit.

This weekend's games have been postponed due to the threat of a post-season winter storm due to hit the northeast on Saturday. Two of the three games will be made up as a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3.

As of right now, the men's baseball series at Lowell is still on, with a doubleheader Friday and a single game on Sunday.
==========================================================
The NCAA men's basketball tournament goes to the field of 64 today (check listings), and at least one local player will see some spotlight.

Albany Academy grad August Mahoney is a senior at Yale, which will play its first game Friday afternoon in Spokane, Washington, vs. Auburn of  the SEC (TNT, approximately 4:15 pm).
============================================================
Wednesday's college results:

Baseball:

Siena 17, Army 7 (7 innings). The Saints pick up their first win of the season.

Men's lacrosse:

College of St. Rose 17, D'Youville 7.
RPI 16, Williams College 8.

Women's lacrosse:

Union 20, Plattsburgh 1.

The other shoe drops: Carmen Maciariello out at Siena

 Last month, Siena administration gave men's basketball coach Carmen Maciariello the dreaded vote of confidence. The Saints finished 4-28, eliminated in the 1st round of the MAAC tournament last week in Atlantic City.

This morning, the other shoe dropped, as Siena decided to cut Maciariello with 2 years left on his contract.

Injuries to key players, including Sean Durugordon and Michael Eley, coupled with the worst single season record in school history, ultimately did in "Coach Carm". You can't really say you didn't see this coming.

On the heels of Maciariello's firing, Mason Courtney, a walk-on from Shenendehowa, has entered the transfer portal, following Eley and Zek Tekin, who entered the portal on Monday.

There were rumors as early as last month that Siena was interested in talking to Will Brown, who just finished his lone season at the College of St. Rose. While Siena administration announced a nationwide search would begin for the next coach, I'm also hearing that Syracuse assistant and former player Gerry McNamara is also being rumored as a possibility.

All we can say now is, stay tuned.

News & notes

 We closed yesterday's report by saying there'd be a pool on when Jonathan Beagle (Hudson Falls) would re-enter the transfer portal and leave UAlbany, this time for good.

It didn't take that long at all. Michael Kelly, in today's Albany Times-Union, reports that Beagle, who left the Great Danes after their February 1 loss to Vermont, for personal reasons, has gone into the portal, and it's believed he won't be back at UAlbany this time.

But, that isn't all.

Over at Siena, six women, led by sophomore Elisa Mevius, have entered the portal as well. The others are London Gamble, Hannah Finnerty, Constance Ogbeide, Esther Rodellar, & Nikola Zdenkova. Aside from Mevius & Gamble, the others are seldom-used bench players who will be looking to find a school that will give them greater playing time. In fact, Finnerty left the program back at the start of the season.

We've been touting the efforts of Albany Academy graduate Brett Young at George Washington for a while now. The Times-Union's Bill Arsenault finally took notice, and included Brett in today's Campus Watch column. For the season, Young is hitting .365 with 5 stolen bases, 4 doubles, a triple, and 14 RBI.

And there's a couple more familiar names on today's list.

Jenalyse Alarcon (Troy High) was named to the East Coast Conference 2nd team for the 2nd straight year. Jenalyse led the College of Staten Island in scoring at 12.3 points per game, assists (61), and rebounding. Jenalyse's sisters were on Troy's varsity & JV rosters this season.

Staying in the East Coast Conference, Anna Jankovic (Averill Park) joins Alarcon on the ECC 2nd team, and Jackie Stanovich (Amsterdam) was named to the first team. The two attend D'Youville & Mercy, respectively.

As much as we've reported on Siena this season we were lax in noting Grace Heeps (Columbia), who played for Canisius this season. Heeps graduated from Northfield Mt. Hermon, a prep school in Massachusetts, after leaving Columbia. She averaged 6.8 points per game.

Tuesday's college scoreboard:

Baseball:

Brockport swept Cobleskill, 12-0 & 4-0.

Men's lacrosse:

Virginia 16, UAlbany 10. The Great Danes' 2 game winning streak is snapped, as Scott Marr's club falls to 2-5.

Women's lacrosse:

Syracuse 20, UAlbany 11.

Southern Connecticut State 14, College of St. Rose 6.
Russell Sage 18, Potsdam 12.

Softball:

Florida Memorial 9, Cobleskill 4.
Siena 10, Stonehill 1(5 innings).
Cobleskill 5, College of St. Mary (Nebraska) 1.

News & notes

 There's still some basketball to be played for UAlbany's women after all.

Coach Colleen Mullen and the Lady Danes will be on the road at Colgate on Thursday in the 1st round of the Women's NIT. Both teams were granted automatic qualifiers, and, although Albany had the better record, they're on the road against Colgate, the runner-up in the Patriot League.

A win Thursday means a 2nd round meeting with Providence (Big East), for whom Meghan Huerter (Shenendehowa) played before transferring to Albany.

Unfortunately, as of now, none of the early round games will have any television coverage. You could check Colgate's website to see if the game is being streamed on Thursday. Tip time is scheduled for 6 pm. The semi-finals & finals will air on CBS Sports Network (Spectrum channel 315) April 2-6.
==========================================================
An indicator of how bad things went for Siena this season is the fact that when the transfer portal opened Monday, Michael Eley and Zek Tekin entered it. Both had to deal with injuries this season, Eley more so than Tekin, and those injuries were a big reason why Siena ended the season 4-28. Freshman Max Frazier, who didn't see the court much this season, also went into the portal, perhaps unhappy with the lack of playing time.

There will be a pool on how long before UAlbany's Jonathan Beagle re-enters the portal....

If you don't already have tickets for the NCAA women's super regional at MVP Arena March 29-April 1, you're already SOL.

MVP Arena GM Bob Belber expects the downtown venue to be sold out all four days--yes, they'll play on Easter Sunday--and they'll open the upper bowl in the arena, meaning as many as 14,000 people for each day.

Ticketmaster, the NCAA's official ticketing partner, is already listing resale tickets for March 30 in the lower bowl in the range of $344-$1300. Upper bowl seats, particularly in the 4 corners, are running at $215 each.

All of this is in anticipation of Iowa and its superstar, Caitlin Clark, coming to town. Fans expecting Connecticut to return to Albany were disappointed when the Lady Huskies were sent west to Portland, and reportedly are selling the tickets they bought for Albany.

You can imagine the restaurants & hotels in the area will also benefit......

Today's UAlbany men's lacrosse match vs. Virginia will air on the ACC Network (Spectrum channel 388) at 4 pm. The Great Danes have won 2 straight, but they're playing the #3 team in the country as of now.

News & notes

 High school basketball is over in Section II, but there's more hoops coming.

The final tally for Section II in 2024 is 5 state titles. 4 in men's basketball, 1 for the women (Catholic Central).

Northville, the last Section II team in women's action in a final, fell to defending champion Hammond Central, 54-34, at Hudson Valley Community College on Sunday. Coach Jim Zullo admitted that the Falcons' lack of varsity experience, with just 1 senior leading a roster of underclass-women, was a factor in the loss to the Red Devils, who repeated as champs for the first time in 17 years.

Over in Glens Falls, Section II swept the Sunday doubleheader.

Green Tech, which won the last 2 Class AA titles, won the 1st Class AAA title, upsetting Bay Shore, 79-63. Bay Shore, like the Averill Park women on Friday at HVCC, saw their hope for a perfect season come to a crashing end.

In the nightcap, North Warren defeated top-ranked Sackets Harbor, 68-66, withstanding a late rally from the Patriots.

The other common thread? Upstate NY 2, Long Island 0.

Congratulations to all of our Section II state champs.
==============================================
The NCAA women's super-regional rolls into MVP Arena next week, loaded with star power. We think.

The top seeds in the regional, including defending champion LSU, will play at home this week, needing to win in order to advance to Albany. The super regional field also includes the top seeds on both sides of the bracket, South Carolina and Iowa. For Albany fans, this could be their only chance to see Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark, who has declared for the WNBA draft.

The women's super regional at MVP Arena will be March 29-April 1.

Mercer likewise swept Siena, 13-2.
RPI 22, Keene State 4.
American International 10, College of St. Rose 5.

The Albany Patroons return to action at the Washington Avenue Armory Thursday, hosting Virginia Valley after getting swept by Newfoundland over the weekend.

News & notes

 The College of St. Rose's women's basketball team ended their final season on a losing note, falling, 52-47, to Daemen in the NCAA Division II East Regional on Saturday. Kaela Carter led the Knights with 16 points, followed by Payton Graber (Schalmont) with 14.

So, what happens next?

Certainly, there'll be a bidding war for Will Brown's services. The veteran coach, in his 1st---and seemingly only---season coaching women, took a team that was picked to finish near the bottom of the Northeast 10, and took them to the post-season. He brought Graber over from Hudson Valley Community College, Syrita Faraj from Russell Sage, and Maddisyn Mahoney from Fairleigh Dickinson, for starters, to build the core of his roster. Those three, plus the rest of the team, will be transferring elsewhere for next season.

There had been whispers that Brown would likely head to Siena next to replace Carmen Maciariello, but that remains to be seen.
========================================
And while they were passing out the Kleenex at Bentley University, there was likely a box being passed around at HVCC for Albany Academy's Bears after the Class B champions fell to Notre Dame-Utica, 55-51. Albany Academy only has one senior, Bella Vincent, meaning the core of the Bears will remain intact for next season.

In other high school action:

Women:

Class A final: Catholic Central 64, Walter Panas, 62. The Lady Crusaders won their 1st state title since 2002.

Class D: Northville will face Hammond today at 11:45 am.

Men:

Class AAA: Green Tech 52, Kingston 45. The Eagles play Bay Shore today at 1 pm.

Class A final: Glens Falls 50, Wayne 37. The Black Bears won their 2nd state title in 5 years.

Class D: North Warren will play Sackets Harbor today at 3 pm.
===================================================
George Washington University is back on the winning track, having won the 1st two games of their weekend series vs. Presbyterian, 6-3 (Friday) & 3-0 in 11 innings (Saturday). Brett Young (Albany Academy/Siena) went 1-3 on Saturday after sitting out Friday's game. The series concludes today at noon.
======================================================
College hockey season is over in the 518.

Seems there's some pushback to changing the annual Run For Women into the "Delightful Run For Women".

In today's Albany Times-Union, reader Alison Walsh of Albany finds the name change appalling, and, while acknowledging what has been written here previously, that the name change is an "attempt" to give the race more national exposure, but accuses the organizers of putting corporate profit over the race and the city. In her anger, Ms. Walsh forgets that "Delightful", as in, Sara Lee Delightful bread, is part of the same corporate conglomerate that purchased Freihofer's years ago. The question remains as to whether or not Ms. Walsh, a competitor in this race for years, will be at the starting line this year. Stay tuned.
======================================================
The Albany FireWolves dropped their 2nd straight to Rochester, 11-10, having played them twice in a week in a home & home series.

Saturday, March 16, 2024

News & notes

 RPI will be playing to save its postseason tonight, down 1-0 in games in the ECAC playoffs vs. Quinnipiac after the Bobcats blew out the Engineers, 6-1. A win tonight forces a game 3 tomorrow.

The same holds true for Union, which lost, 3-1, to Dartmouth. Not a good way to mark the 10th anniversary of Union's national title in hockey.
===========================================
Basketball season is over at Siena.

Falling behind, 34-11, after the 1st quarter vs. Niagara, the Saints never recovered, and the Purple Eagles eliminated the women, just as the men did earlier in the week, 87-70. The men's game, hampered by a delayed start Tuesday, was more competitive, but turnovers in that critical 1st frame, cost Siena big time.
=============================================
Hopefully, there was plenty of Kleenex to send to Hudson Valley Community College for the high school state tournaments.

In the Class C final, Allison O'Hanlon had 27 points, but very little support, as Alex Moses was held to 3 points, and Hannah Mulhern had just 8, as Moravia defeated Duanesburg, 46-45.

Sean Organ's quest for a perfect season for Class AA champion Averill Park came to a crashing end as AP fell in overtime to Hilton, 73-71, in what can be perceived as the biggest upset of the day.

In her final high school game, Taylor Holohan had 31 points, backed by Arianna Verardi with 17, but Hilton wouldn't stay down, playing with a point to prove. Playing their 4th game on the HVCC court in 2 weeks, AP should've had more of an advantage, but Hilton had the answers to the AP defense.

Luckily, there are three more Section II teams still in the hunt.

In Class A, Catholic Central will play Walter Panas later tonight (approximate tip time is 7 pm). That game will be preceded by the B final, with Utica-Notre Dame as the last obstacle for Albany Academy, after the Bears routed Southwestern, 73-32, on Friday.

Earlier today, Class D champ Northville advanced to tomorrow's title game by beating Elba, 41-34. Jim Zullo's club will await the winner of Hammond Central vs. Cherry Valley-Springfield, underway at press time. Tip time tomorrow is 11:45 am.

Meanwhile, in Glens Falls, one men's title has been decided, as Stillwater defeated Marcellus, 59-50, for the B title.

Earlier today, Green Tech advanced to the Class AAA title game by defeating Kingston for the 2nd time this season, 52-45. The Eagles will play the winner of Bay Shore vs. Niagara Falls, also currently underway. In Class D, North Warren moves on to tomorrow's title game after beating Smithtown Christian, 51-46. They'll play Sackets Harbor tomorrow at 3.

Homestanding Glens Falls plays Wayne later this afternoon.

Thursday's high school & college scoreboard, 3/14

 The Siena women's basketball team had to have held a birthday party for senior Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) prior to the 1st round of the MAAC women's tournament in Atlantic City.

Jackson erupted for 22 points on her 22nd birthday, including 5 3 pointers, and Siena advances to today's semi-finals with an 80-57 thumping of Mount St. Mary's. Next up is Niagara, today at 1:30 pm. The Siena pep band, which made the trip to Atlantic City, serenaded Jackson with "Happy Birthday" after the game. Jackson was one of four Saints in double figures, followed by Teresa Seppala with 18, and Elisa Mevius with 12.

The rest of Thursday's college action:

Baseball:

Franklin & Marshall 8, Skidmore 6.

Women's lacrosse:

Roberts Wesleyan 18, College of St. Rose 10.

Softball:

Lake Forest 14, Skidmore 6 (6 innings).
======================================================
Four months ago, Stillwater seniors Jaxon Mueller, Lukas Lilac, Kaelen Leak, Thomas McDonough, & Carter Wilchelns won a state championship in football in Class D.

Tonight, those five, with the rest of the Stillwater basketball team, will attempt to complete a daily double by winning the Class B title in Glens Falls against Marcellus. Stillwater got there by dispatching Woodlands, 64-53, on Thursday night. Mueller, the son of UAlbany baseball coach and Stillwater legend Jon Mueller, had 23 points, including 9 in the 4th quarter. Tip time today is approximately 5:15 pm.

Meanwhile, in Troy, Duanesburg's women will play for their first title today at Hudson Valley Community College after defeating Frewsburg, 54-51. Senior star Allison O'Hanlon had 21 points, but no 3 pointers. After seeing a 4th quarter lead dissipate thanks to a Frewsburg rally to tie the game, Hannah Mulhern scored the final six points for Duanesburg to win and advance to the finals, where they'll play Moravia at approximately 5:15 pm today.

Regrettably, the box scores for both high school games won't be published until tomorrow.

News & notes

 TNA (Total Non-stop Action) Wrestling is returning to the ancient Washington Avenue Armory for their Under Siege show and a subsequent taping of Impact, Friday & Saturday, May 3-4. Tickets will go on sale via Ticketmaster on Saturday, and also at the Armory box office.

But, that's not all.

As you can see from the above graphic, TNA is joining forces with the Albany Firebirds for the May 2 game vs. Nashville at MVP Arena. Current TNA World champion Moose (Quinn Ojinnaka) and AJ Francis, a recent signee after leaving WWE, will be honorary captains, despite both being heels in the ring.

Ojinnaka, also a songwriter, composed his own theme music, which was introduced in Ring of Honor. He played with 4 NFL teams, including Atlanta & New England, before swapping his shoulder pads & cleats for tights & boots.

Francis, formerly Top Dolla in WWE/NXT, played with several NFL teams, including Miami & the Giants, before signing with WWE in 2020. Francis also hosted WWE Most Wanted Treasures during its 1st season on A&E.

News & notes

 As a parting gift to Troy High, which is moving to the Colonial Council this fall, the Suburban Council snubbed the Flying Horses in naming their men's basketball all-stars, revealed Tuesday. Didn't help that their best player, freshman Stetson Merritt, left the team before the sectionals. Former Troy player Daniel Covington, a senior at Albany, made the 2nd team.
====================================================
Siena's men's basketball team had to wait until nearly midnight to take the court vs. Niagara in the MAAC tournament due to earlier games running long.

The game, scheduled for a 9:45 pm tip, didn't start until sometime after 11 pm. Given Siena's wretched record, you'd think the tournament organizers would've gotten a clue and had this game go on earlier than it was scheduled.

As it was, oft-injured sophomore Michael Eley didn't start, and led Siena with 15 points in 33 minutes coming off the bench, leading 5 Saints in double figures. Mason Courtney (Shenendehowa) was one of three with 10 points in 30 minutes, but it wasn't enough, as Niagara advanced with a 67-65 win. Siena finishes 4-28, on an 8 game losing streak heading into next season.

News & notes

 Sports fans at UAlbany can now give their full attention to lacrosse, softball, & baseball, after the women's basketball team was eliminated by arch-nemesis Vermont, 50-46, at Broadview Center on Monday. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 16 points. Helene Haegerstrand, in her final game, finished with 15. Lilly Phillips (Cambridge) had 5, and Meghan Huerter & Abby Ray were held scoreless.

Albany finishes 25-6, but who knows? Maybe they land a berth in the Women's NIT.......!

Section II has been trying for years to bring home a state hockey championship.

On Sunday, Queensbury tried to end the drought, but Skaneateles wasn't having any of it, beating the Spartans, 5-1. There's always next year.

Lost amidst it all is the fact that Columbia, representing the Suburban Council, won a state women's bowling championship on Sunday in Syracuse. The Lady Devils are the first team from Section II to win a state bowling title since Colonie did it 11 years ago. Jennifer Doty led Columbia with a 1301 total over a 6 game block, averaging 216.8 over the six games.

Columbia's men's team finished in 8th place
