More & more older pro wrestlers are finding out how lucrative it is to go on the road and tell stories about their glory years, and take questions from the audience.
WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley did just that a few weeks back at WAMC's The Linda, and now, two more Hall of Famers, old rivals Tito Santana & Greg Valentine, will be at The Linda on Saturday night.
A fair number of Wednesday's games were moved forward on the schedule due to weather concerns, with the exception of the Bethlehem-Niskayuna game, which was moved up for the express purpose of ensuring that fans could move on to the hockey game down the street after the basketball game.
That said, let's take a look at Wednesday's scores:
Class AA:
Mekeel Christian 61, Shaker 45. The Lions, who were in Class A not too long ago, moved up to AA this year, as one of two independents in the field.
Green Tech 83, LaSalle 70. LaSalle, the lone Colonial Council team in AA, goes out in the 1st round. The Eagles were in A last year, you might recall, ending Troy High's season.
Bethlehem 48, Niskayuna 46 (OT). Cam LaClaiir scored the game-winner on the last play of the game.
Colonie 65, Albany 59.
Saratoga 64, Guilderland 53.
Shenendehowa 64, Schenectady 62.
Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College:
When the Albany Patroons begin play March 3 at the Washington Avenue Armory, they will have their first 2nd generation Patroon on the roster.
Derrick Rowland, Jr. (Green Tech/New Haven) will join his father, Derrick, St., at the Armory. The elder Rowland is back for his 3rd tour of duty as head coach, and 4th overall, counting his playing days back in the 80's.
A scant more than three weeks ago, LaSalle took down the Storm, 3-1, on the road. Today, before a near-sellout crowd at Frear Park, in what will be the Cadets' final home game of the season, "Guilderville", a mash-up of Guilderland, Schalmont, Mohonasen, Voorheesville, & Scotia-Glenville, sought revenge against the 7th seeded Cadets.
Based on the reaction of the home fans, it seemed as though the Storm had a 7th man in one of the referees, based on the disparity of penalties called, a ratio of about 3-1, given how many power plays the Storm had, which goes against the usual post-season mentality of letting the players play, and decide the game for themselves.
Fortunately for LaSalle, they neutralized the perceived bias by killing off every penalty, and scoring 2 shorthanded goals in the process.
But, we're getting ahead of ourselves.
Faced with a 2 man disadvantage to start the 2nd period, LaSalle kept the Storm off the scoreboard until an even strength goal at the midway point of the frame, sandwiched around two more goals by Rose, as he completed the hat trick. Braxton Shields added another, and the Cadets were comfortably in front, 5-1, heading into the 3rd period. Michael Nocera ended the scoring with a goal in the 3rd, as the Cadets roll into the quarter-finals, 6-1.
Up next for LaSalle (10-10-1 overall) will be #2 Bethlehem, and a shot at revenge. The Eagles shut out LaSalle, 4-0, on February 11.
Other scores:
CBA 5, Mohawks 1.
Albany Academy 4, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa 3. First upset of the tournament nets Academy a date with #3 Shenendehowa on Wednesday while CBA plays defending champion Adirondack. Saratoga at the CD Jets rounds out the Wednesday schedule.
The first full day of sectional play for the women didn't hold any surprises, as form held.
Class AA:
Shaker 66, Schenectady 28. An example of why league doormats, such as the Lady Patriots, shouldn't have been in the tournament. Shaker led, 40-9 (!!) at halftime, and 60-13 after 3 periods before Schenectady actually outscored the Bison, 15-6, in the 4th quarter. Too little, too late for an upset. Shaker moves on to play at Bethlehem on Thursday. The Eagles beat Shaker the first time around.
Guilderland 57, Ballston Spa 47. The Lady Dutch will travel to Albany on Thursday.
Class A:
Academy of Holy Names (Colonial Council) 48, Hudson Falls (Foothills Council) 38. Holy Names visits Catholic Central on Thursday.
Amsterdam 52, Mohonasen 35. The Rams will play Averill Park next.
Class B:
Albany Academy 74, Cohoes 28.
Schylerville (Foothills Council) 47, Mechanicville (Wasaren League) 42. The Black Horses visit Albany Academy next.
Schalmont (Colonial Council) 48, Coxsackie-Athens (Patroon Conference) 25.
Broadalbin-Perth (Foothills Council) 56, Watervliet (Patroon Conference) 35.
Ichabod Crane (Colonial Council) 69, Hudson (Patroon Conference) 28. The Riders and Patriots meet on Wednesday.
Fonda-Fultonville (Western Athletic Conference) 53, Greenville (Patroon Conference) 45. Fonda will travel to face Schalmont next.
Tamarac (Wasaren League) 57, Glens Falls (Foothills Council) 38.
Catskill (Patroon Conference) 60, Ravena (Colonial Council) 42. Catskill will host Tamarac on Wednesday.

14 months ago, South Glens Falls was in a lot of ways like Troy High's women's basketball team, struggling. Troy beat the Bulldogs in the 3rd place game of the Averill Park Tip-Off Tournament, but things were different this season, as the Bulldogs lost to host Averill Park in the finals, while Troy finished last after losing to Columbia.
And, so, went the season. South High posted the best record in the Foothills Council at 17-3 going into today's matinee, while Troy suffered a historically bad regular season, finishing at 1-19, and having lost seven in a row entering play today.
The upside for Troy is they not only got coach Steve Lombard back after he missed last week's regular season finale at Bethlehem, but they added four extra players off either the JV roster or the undefeated women's modified team, I couldn't tell, and none of the extra players even entered the game. Seems the newcomers were there as observers only, and ineligible to play. Another mistake in a season full of them at Troy.
Troy led briefly in the first quarter, but then, South High went on a 7-0 run to end the frame, and never trailed again. The problems were there for all to see. Troy's defense left one Bulldog wide open for three if her teammates could find her. The offensive rebounds were few & far between until a second half run got Troy as close as nine points, but that would be as close as it'd get, as South High extracted a measure of revenge, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 53-41 win.
The reward for South Glens Falls? A 3rd meeting with league rival Queensbury, only this time on neutral ground at Catholic Central's Monsignor Burns Gym. While CCHS is now based in Latham, they still play their home basketball & volleyball games at the Lansingburgh gym.

It is the first weekend of sectional play in basketball, with eight games on tonight's card, with all but one having been reported.
Women:Class C:
Waterford (Wasaren League) 50, Schoharie (Western Athletic Conference) 39.
Hoosic Valley (Wasaren League) 39, Galway (Adirondack League) 30.
Class CC:
Stillwater (Wasaren League) 64, Lake George (Adirondack League) 21.
Hoosick Falls (Wasaren League) 34, Chatham (Patroon Conference) 27.
Granville @ Rensselaer has not been reported as of press time.
Men:
Class B:
Johnstown (Foothills Council) 71, Coxsackie-Athens (Patroon Conference) 49.
Broadalbin-Perth (Foothills Council) 69, Ravena (Colonial Council) 60.
Taconic Hills (Patroon Conference) 64, Cairo-Durham (Patroon Conference) 48.
We have learned in the last hour that two of the three women's basketball sectional games scheduled for tonight have been postponed, and moved to Saturday. Only the Class B game, with Mekeel Christian visiting Cohoes, is still on, and will tip at 6 pm.
Scotia-Glenville @ Burnt Hills is also rescheduled for Saturday at 1 at Burnt Hills.
While no reason has been given for the changes, it's likely due to the prospect of inclement weather in Saratoga & Schenectady counties inhibiting travel.
Also, Troy @ South Glens Falls has had its start time moved up 5 hours from 6 pm to 1 pm on Saturday. No reason has been provided for this change, but it should actually benefit both teams.
The regular season in Section II basketball ended Wednesday night with a light schedule.
The women's game between Berne-Knox-Westerlo and Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk has not been reported as of press time.
On the men's side:
Adirondack League:
Whitehall 55, Warrensburg 49.
Non-league:
And, now, as the late Paul Harvey used to say, is the rest of the story.
The Section II men's basketball brackets are out, and with them comes a new venue for the Class A quarter-finals. Instead of Hudson Valley Community College, the A quarters will be played at UHY Arena at Siena College. I'm guessing that this has something to do with UAlbany possibly having a home game at HVCC next weekend.
Anyway, here we go!
The men's brackets will be released later this afternoon, but for now, we have the women's pairings in basketball. A quick reminder that hockey pairings will be announced late Thursday or early Friday.
Saturday:
#10 Schenectady @ #7 Shaker, 2:30 pm. Winner plays #2 Bethlehem February 23.
#9 Ballston Spa @ #8 Guilderland, 6 pm. Winner plays #1 Albany February 23.
Also on February 23:
#5 Saratoga vs. #4 Colonie at Albany.
#6 Niskayuna vs. #3 Shenendehowa at Bethlehem.
Men's basketball:
Adirondack League:
The season, barring the unlikely decision to enter the sectionals, is over for Troy High's women's basketball team, after getting blown out of the gym yet again on Friday.
Coach Steve Lombard missed the game, and it is unclear why. Either he was ill, or it could be something else entirely. As of press time, nothing has been reported on Lombard's status going forward. The smart move here for AD Paul Reinisch is to end it right here, rather than risk further traumatizing the team.
Meanwhile, the men's team, under John Killian, has dropped 4 in a row, and 5 of 7, after falling to Goshen, 81-56, on Saturday.Stetson Merritt led the Flying Horses with 20 points. Terrence Clark added 16 points, and Damarion Tucker chipped in 12.
What has gone wrong for the Troy men?
Part of it could be psychological in nature, related to the departure, at least for the season, of junior Daniel Covington due to what can only be described as "off the court issues". Covington had been one of the best players on the team the last two seasons, and his continued absence hurts the team more than they're willing to let on. Troy will close out its regular season tonight at Utica Academy of Science needing to win and build momentum for the sectionals, which start later this week. A win tonight also puts the Flying Horses at .500 (10-10) for the season.
Tonight, then, is a barometer of how the Horses will finish the season.
The Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) playoffs begin with a play-in round one week from today. Both sets of Cadets---LaSalle & Albany Academy---will likely go through the play-in round to reach the final field of 8. And they're trending in opposite directions.
LaSalle dropped its 2nd straight, 4-0, to Bethlehem in their season finale, leaving Tim Flanigan's club at 6-8 in league play (9-10-1 overall). Conversely, Albany Academy dispatched CBA, 5-1, winning their 2nd straight, and will close at home vs. Bethlehem on Wednesday.
Sinclair Broadcasting, which holds the local broadcast rights to almost half of the teams in Major League Baseball, including the Mets, is on the verge of losing business media partner Diamond Sports Group, which is facing bankruptcy.
It is Senior Night at Bethlehem High this evening. As a token of goodwill and sportsmanship, the Eagles honored not only their lone senior, but also Troy's 4 seniors, including Addie Borowsky, who were honored prior to last week's loss to Niskayuna. I've seen this kind of goodwill before, when Troy's women's soccer team similarly honored Heatly a few years ago.
Noticeably absent was coach Steve Lombard, and Troy dressed just 8 players. Uh-oh! Sarah Fullmer ran the team tonight, but otherwise, it was more of the same.
Bethlehem never trailed, using a suffocating, full-court pressure defense, generating more turnovers than a pastry factory. If I named some brands, I'd be sued for defamation. Just kidding. After a narrow loss to Shenendehowa on Tuesday, Bethlehem, as expected, took it out on the undermanned Lady Horses to the tune of a 68-30 beatdown.
Edit, 2/15/23: Bethlehem has decided to privatize the video. So, we have a little graphic to replace it.
As the losses mount, the current losing streak now at 8 in a row, the more likely it is that UAlbany may have to cut bait on 2nd year coach Dwayne Killings, as his legal issues have provided too much of a distraction.
In front of just over 1,000 fans at Hudson Valley Community College on Wednesday, the Great Danes laid another egg, losing to Bryant, 87-62. Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. led the Danes with 16 points.
