News & notes

 UAlbany's men's basketball team closes its regular season at Vermont tonight, hoping to break the Catamounts' hex over them. They're figuring the snow will stop by the time the Great Danes are ready to leave campus for the game, which can be heard on WTMM (104.5).
=================================================
As of right now, the Section II hockey championship game between Bethlehem and the Capital District Jets is still on for tonight at Union College, with a puck drop scheduled for 6 pm, though someone associated with the Jets suggested that if the game needs to be postponed due to weather, it can be moved to Wednesday night. Good thinking.
==================================================
Advocates for retaining Native American team nicknames in Section II have an unlikely champion in their corner in NY Misrepresentative Elise Stefanik of Schuylerville.

Ms. Stefanik is claiming the state department of education has "misplaced priorities" in calling for the name changes. No, they don't. You do. Maybe if you paid more attention to the situation as it presently stands, you could see things differently.

In other words, Ms. Stefanik, get a clue.
===================================================
We're also waiting to find out if tonight's basketball sectionals in Glens Falls (Cool Insuring Arena) & Troy (Hudson Valley Community College) will be played as scheduled or be postponed and moved to another night. However, with another storm system heading into the Capital Region at the end of the week, they may have little choice but to try. We'll see.

Update, 11:22 am: Section II is going ahead with both the basketball sectionals and the hockey finals.

News & notes

 RPI & Union's hockey teams clinched home ice for their 1st round ECAC playoff series, which begin on Friday.

The two local teams tied for 7th place, and will host Yale and Princeton, respectively, on Saturday night. Princeton was just in town this past weekend, and were swept by the Engineers (6-4) & Dutchmen (3-1). Returning to Schenectady may not be the Tigers' idea of a good time, especially with a winter storm coming through on Friday.
============================================
First, Siena lost sophomore star Jared Billups to injury. Then, they were blown out of the gym as Iona collected a receipt in splitting the seasons series with the Saints, 93-60. The Saints return to MVP Arena Thursday for Senior Night vs. Manhattan, looking to end a 3 game losing streak.

News & notes

 More & more older pro wrestlers are finding out how lucrative it is to go on the road and tell stories about their glory years, and take questions from the audience.

WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley did just that a few weeks back at WAMC's The Linda, and now, two more Hall of Famers, old rivals Tito Santana & Greg Valentine, will be at The Linda on Saturday night.

Santana, otherwise now a school teacher in New Jersey, last we heard, had a heated feud with Valentine over the Intercontinental championship back in the 80's. This should be interesting.
===================================
Thursday's college scores:

Women's lacrosse:

RPI 20, SUNY-Oneonta 7.

Baseball:

Hofstra 6, UAlbany 5.
=======================================
MVP Arena has been home to WWE, AEW, & TNA (now Impact Wrestling) over the years, with the former two having recently been there this past fall. This weekend, it'll once again be home for the Section II wrestling championships. Unfortunately, the competition won't be televised, but it should, the better to educate viewers on Greco-Roman & freestyle wrestling. Spectrum Cable, when it was still Time Warner in this market, did carry the championships one year, but we're wishing local broadcast channels, especially if they don't have any significant sports programming this weekend, would take up the gauntlet. Just sayin'.
=======================================
Thursday's high school sectional scoreboard:

Hockey:

Adirondack 5, CBA 1.
CD Jets 4, Saratoga 2.

The semi-finals have been moved from Union College, and so Adirondack will host the Jets Sunday at 5:15 pm, while Bethlehem will have one more home game vs. Shenendehowa, Sunday at 7:30 pm. No reason given for the late switch, though we suspect either issues with officials or a scheduling conflict at Union, which will still host the finals on Tuesday at 6 pm.

Women's basketball:

Class AA:

Colonie 68, Saratoga 52,
Albany 66, Guilderland 37.
Bethlehem 56, Shaker 52. The Bison led for most of the game, but Bethlehem used a 4th quarter comeback, down by as much as 12 points in the 2nd quarter, to advance.

Shenendehowa 56, Niskayuna 54.

Monday at Hudson Valley Community College:

Shen vs. Bethlehem, 4:30 pm.
Colonie vs. Albany, 6 pm.

Class A;

South Glens Falls 45, Queensbury 41.
Catholic Central 56, Academy of Holy Names 40.
Averill Park 64, Amsterdam 18. The Lady Warriors shut down the Lady Rams in the 2nd quarter, and used their bench for the entire 2nd half!

Columbia 63, Burnt Hills 44.

Tuesday at HVCC (weather permitting):

South Glens Falls vs. Catholic Central, 4:30 pm.
Columbia vs. Averill Park, 6 pm.
===========================================
Another winter storm is headed our way on Monday, which might've played a role in moving the start times up on Monday at least, but there might be other factors involved.

Wednesday's sectional scoreboard, 2/22

 A fair number of Wednesday's games were moved forward on the schedule due to weather concerns, with the exception of the Bethlehem-Niskayuna game, which was moved up for the express purpose of ensuring that fans could move on to the hockey game down the street after the basketball game.

That said, let's take a look at Wednesday's scores:

News & notes

 When the Albany Patroons begin play March 3 at the Washington Avenue Armory, they will have their first 2nd generation Patroon on the roster.

Derrick Rowland, Jr. (Green Tech/New Haven) will join his father, Derrick, St., at the Armory. The elder Rowland is back for his 3rd tour of duty as head coach, and 4th overall, counting his playing days back in the 80's.

This may start a trend!
=============================================
We will remind again that with winter weather heading into the area this afternoon, tonight's basketball & hockey sectionals may be adversely affected. Check with your schools via social media or e-mail before making travel plans.

News & notes

 A quick correction from yesterday. Saratoga and the Capital District Jets will play their quarter-final hockey game on Thursday instead of Wednesday, although the weather forecast both nights might make the point rather moot. The winner will play the winner of Wednesday's CBA-Adirondack game.
=============================================
Through the first weekend of the softball season, George Washington University is at 0-3 after getting swept by East Carolina. Brett Young (Albany Academy/VCU/Siena) went 4-13 in the series with an RBI, a run scored, but six strikeouts. Anthony Germinerio (UAlbany/Averill Park) has yet to see the mound for the Colonials, and could this weekend.
=============================================
Likewise, Siena opened the season 0-3 after getting swept by Central Florida in Orlando, including two blowout losses. Sunday's game was called after 7 innings, as the Saints were routed, 11-1. Next up will be a 4 game weekend set at Jacksonville.

In contrast, Siena's softball team is 5-0 to start the season. Ava Fitzmaurice, a Greenville native returning to the 518 as a graduate transfer from New Haven, led the way against North Carolina Central on Sunday with a home run in going 2-3 with a walk as Siena won, 8-1. This weekend, the Lady Saints will be in Florida and play Valparaiso, Oakland, Notre Dame, Dartmouth, Florida International, and Tennessee-Martin. Six games, six opponents, three days. Whew!
===============================================
UAlbany's baseball & softball teams will begin play this weekend. The Great Danes will open the baseball schedule with a series against Hofstra, while the women will play five games in three days in South Carolina. Two games each vs. St. Joseph's & Coastal Carolina, with a single game vs. Mt. St. Mary's in the middle. Best of luck to the Danes.
===============================================
Basketball sectionals resume tonight, but with inclement weather in the forecast tomorrow & Thursday, some games on those two nights may be adversely affected. Schools are otherwise on winter break this week, but if you have e-mail access to your school's athletic departments, you might be able to find out if your school's game is being played.

A Storm of goals (Guilderville @ LaSalle, 2/20/23)

 A scant more than three weeks ago, LaSalle took down the Storm, 3-1, on the road. Today, before a near-sellout crowd at Frear Park, in what will be the Cadets' final home game of the season, "Guilderville", a mash-up of Guilderland, Schalmont, Mohonasen, Voorheesville, & Scotia-Glenville, sought revenge against the 7th seeded Cadets.

Based on the reaction of the home fans, it seemed as though the Storm had a 7th man in one of the referees, based on the disparity of penalties called, a ratio of about 3-1, given how many power plays the Storm had, which goes against the usual post-season mentality of letting the players play, and decide the game for themselves.

Fortunately for LaSalle, they neutralized the perceived bias by killing off every penalty, and scoring 2 shorthanded goals in the process.

But, we're getting ahead of ourselves.

Almost midway through the first period, LaSalle struck first, as freshman sensation Chase Rose jammed the puck into the net. Mere seconds later, Ethan Lashway did the same thing, and the Cadets had a 2-0 lead after the frame. However, things got chippy as time expired in the period, and a brief scuffle ensued. LaSalle's Aiden Bell was one of two players given game misconducts, his afternoon over early.

Faced with a 2 man disadvantage to start the 2nd period, LaSalle kept the Storm off the scoreboard until an even strength goal at the midway point of the frame, sandwiched around two more goals by Rose, as he completed the hat trick. Braxton Shields added another, and the Cadets were comfortably in front, 5-1, heading into the 3rd period. Michael Nocera ended the scoring with a goal in the 3rd, as the Cadets roll into the quarter-finals, 6-1.

Up next for LaSalle (10-10-1 overall) will be #2 Bethlehem, and a shot at revenge. The Eagles shut out LaSalle, 4-0, on February 11.

Other scores:

CBA 5, Mohawks 1.

Albany Academy 4, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa 3. First upset of the tournament nets Academy a date with #3 Shenendehowa on Wednesday while CBA plays defending champion Adirondack. Saratoga at the CD Jets rounds out the Wednesday schedule.

Saturday's sectional scoreboard, 2/18

 The first full day of sectional play for the women didn't hold any surprises, as form held.

Class AA:

Shaker 66, Schenectady 28. An example of why league doormats, such as the Lady Patriots, shouldn't have been in the tournament. Shaker led, 40-9 (!!) at halftime, and 60-13 after 3 periods before Schenectady actually outscored the Bison, 15-6, in the 4th quarter. Too little, too late for an upset. Shaker moves on to play at Bethlehem on Thursday. The Eagles beat Shaker the first time around.

Guilderland 57, Ballston Spa 47. The Lady Dutch will travel to Albany on Thursday.

Class A:

Academy of Holy Names (Colonial Council) 48, Hudson Falls (Foothills Council) 38. Holy Names visits Catholic Central on Thursday.

Bulldogs bite Horses (Troy @ South Glens Falls, women's basketball, 2/18/23)

 14 months ago, South Glens Falls was in a lot of ways like Troy High's women's basketball team, struggling. Troy beat the Bulldogs in the 3rd place game of the Averill Park Tip-Off Tournament, but things were different this season, as the Bulldogs lost to host Averill Park in the finals, while Troy finished last after losing to Columbia.

And, so, went the season. South High posted the best record in the Foothills Council at 17-3 going into today's matinee, while Troy suffered a historically bad regular season, finishing at 1-19, and having lost seven in a row entering play today.

The upside for Troy is they not only got coach Steve Lombard back after he missed last week's regular season finale at Bethlehem, but they added four extra players off either the JV roster or the undefeated women's modified team, I couldn't tell, and none of the extra players even entered the game. Seems the newcomers were there as observers only, and ineligible to play. Another mistake in a season full of them at Troy.

Troy led briefly in the first quarter, but then, South High went on a 7-0 run to end the frame, and never trailed again. The problems were there for all to see. Troy's defense left one Bulldog wide open for three if her teammates could find her. The offensive rebounds were few & far between until a second half run got Troy as close as nine points, but that would be as close as it'd get, as South High extracted a measure of revenge, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 53-41 win.

The reward for South Glens Falls? A 3rd meeting with league rival Queensbury, only this time on neutral ground at Catholic Central's Monsignor Burns Gym. While CCHS is now based in Latham, they still play their home basketball & volleyball games at the Lansingburgh gym.

Check the video:

Troy ends the season with a 1-20 record, with hope for improvement next season.

The only other game completed at press time saw another matchup of Suburban Council vs. Foothills Council, as Burnt Hills crushed Scotia-Glenville, 69-34. Gary Bynom's Spartans advance to face Suburban rival Columbia on Thursday.

News & notes

 Siena College's women's basketball team took one on the chin at Iona on Thursday in a brunch special (11 am tip), 91-64. Anaja Brown led Siena with 16 points. Valencia Fontanelle-Posson (Guilderland) added 13, and Ahniysha Jackson (Albany) chipped in with 9.
=============================================
In the lone Section II sectional basketball game Thursday, Cohoes defeated Mekeel Christian, 54-29, in a Class B play-in game, and now will move on to play Albany Academy on Saturday.

In hockey news, Section II has decided to have all three play-in games take place on Monday.

In addition to LaSalle hosting the Guilderville Storm at Frear Park (3 pm), CBA will play host to the Mohawks at 2:15, and Albany Academy will try to spoil things for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa, with a 3:35 pick drop. The winners of Monday's games will be matched with Bethlehem, Adirondack, & Shenendehowa, respectively.
=================================================
A quick reminder that tonight's Siena-Quinnipiac game at MVP Arena will tip at approximately 9:05 pm to accomadate ESPNU (Spectrum channel 370), which is carrying the game. WROW morning host Ben Patten didn't get the memo, and has been telling his listeners all through his show that the game is set for a 7 pm tip. Pre-game show will be on ALT 104.9 around 8:30 pm.
====================================================
Some sad news from the world of horse racing.

Hall of Fame trainer John Veitch passed away earlier this week at 77. Veitch's best known runner was Alydar, who was a bridesmaid to Affirmed in the 1978 Triple Crown series, but gained a measure of revenge that summer, when Affirmed was DQ'd in the Travers at Saratoga.

Changes to the sectional schedule

 We have learned in the last hour that two of the three women's basketball sectional games scheduled for tonight have been postponed, and moved to Saturday. Only the Class B game, with Mekeel Christian visiting Cohoes, is still on, and will tip at 6 pm.

As for the Class A games, Amsterdam @ Mohonasen now will be played on Saturday, but not at Mohonasen, due to a scheduling conflict. The game will now be at Schalmont, with a 1 pm tip.

Scotia-Glenville @ Burnt Hills is also rescheduled for Saturday at 1 at Burnt Hills.

While no reason has been given for the changes, it's likely due to the prospect of inclement weather in Saratoga & Schenectady counties inhibiting travel.

Also, Troy @ South Glens Falls has had its start time moved up 5 hours from 6 pm to 1 pm on Saturday. No reason has been provided for this change, but it should actually benefit both teams.

News & notes

 The regular season in Section II basketball ended Wednesday night with a light schedule.

The women's game between Berne-Knox-Westerlo and Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk has not been reported as of press time.

On the men's side:

Adirondack League:

Whitehall 55, Warrensburg 49.

Non-league:

Green Tech 70, Our Lady of Lourdes 38.
===============================================
Wednesday's hockey scoreboard:

Shenendehowa 6, Queensbury 0.

Adirondack & Saratoga skated to a 2-2 draw.

Tonight's coaches meeting at Gowana Middle School is just a mere formality. As of now, the brackets are set as follows:

#7 LaSalle will host the Guilderville Storm Monday at 3 pm at Frear Park. The winner will play #2 Bethlehem.

#6 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa will play Albany Academy. The winner will meet #3 Shenendehowa.

#8 CBA hosts the #9 Mohawks for the right to play #1 Adirondack.
#5 Saratoga travels to play the #4 CD Jets.

We'll have the dates for the other games tomorrow.
===================================================
UAlbany snapped a 9 game losing streak Wednesday night in beating UMBC, 81-74. The Great Danes placed 5 players in double figutes, led by Jonathan Beagle & Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. with 16 points each. Marcus Jackson (Albany Academy) chipped in 6 points.

After a road trip to Maine on Saturday, the Danes will have Senior Night at HVCC on February 25, which does explain why the Class AA high school sectionals were bumped to the 26th, and the Class A sectional quarter-finals were moved to Siena's UHY Arena, also on the 26th.

Meanwhile, the women keep rolling along, as they also beat UMBC, 74-67. Helene Haegerstrand led the Lady Danes with 25 points. Grace Heeps added 6, and Abby Ray had 3 points. Lilly Phillips remains out with a leg injury. The Lady Danes will have Senior Night this Saturday at HVCC vs. Maine.

Section II men's basketball brackets 2023

 And, now, as the late Paul Harvey used to say, is the rest of the story.

The Section II men's basketball brackets are out, and with them comes a new venue for the Class A quarter-finals. Instead of Hudson Valley Community College, the A quarters will be played at UHY Arena at Siena College. Are the wheels falling off for Troy basketball?

 The season, barring the unlikely decision to enter the sectionals, is over for Troy High's women's basketball team, after getting blown out of the gym yet again on Friday.

Coach Steve Lombard missed the game, and it is unclear why. Either he was ill, or it could be something else entirely. As of press time, nothing has been reported on Lombard's status going forward. The smart move here for AD Paul Reinisch is to end it right here, rather than risk further traumatizing the team.

At least the JV women were a little more competitive in losing to Bethlehem.

Meanwhile, the men's team, under John Killian, has dropped 4 in a row, and 5 of 7, after falling to Goshen, 81-56, on Saturday.Stetson Merritt led the Flying Horses with 20 points. Terrence Clark added 16 points, and Damarion Tucker chipped in 12.

What has gone wrong for the Troy men?

Part of it could be psychological in nature, related to the departure, at least for the season, of junior Daniel Covington due to what can only be described as "off the court issues". Covington had been one of the best players on the team the last two seasons, and his continued absence hurts the team more than they're willing to let on. Troy will close out its regular season tonight at Utica Academy of Science needing to win and build momentum for the sectionals, which start later this week. A win tonight also puts the Flying Horses at .500 (10-10) for the season.

Tonight, then, is a barometer of how the Horses will finish the season.

News & notes

 The Capital District High School Hockey League (CDHSHL) playoffs begin with a play-in round one week from today. Both sets of Cadets---LaSalle & Albany Academy---will likely go through the play-in round to reach the final field of 8. And they're trending in opposite directions.

LaSalle dropped its 2nd straight, 4-0, to Bethlehem in their season finale, leaving Tim Flanigan's club at 6-8 in league play (9-10-1 overall). Conversely, Albany Academy dispatched CBA, 5-1, winning their 2nd straight, and will close at home vs. Bethlehem on Wednesday.

Other hockey scores:

CD Jets 10, Mohawks 2.
Guilderville 2, Burnt Hills 1.
==================================================
UAlbany went to overtime in both their men's & women's basketball games vs. Binghamton on Saturday, with predictable results.

The men dropped their 9th straight, 80-66. I'm hearing that there are alumni posting on social media calling for the school to cut not only coach Dwayne Killings, but also athletic director Mark Benson. The shoes, in this writer's opinion, will drop after the America East tournament next month.

Meanwhile, the women downed the Bearcats at Hudson Valley Community College, 63-53. Kayla Cooper led 4 Lady Danes in double figures with 17 points. Grace Heeps, after being shut out in her last game, had 11. Abby Ray played just 3 minutes without scoring.
====================================================
It was a good day for local hockey, too.

RPI had their annual Big Red Freakout at Houston Field House, and notched a 4-2 win over Yale to salvage the weekend. Meanwhile, Union completed a weekend sweep at Messa Rink, defeating Brown, 3-1, in a rare Saturday matinee.
==================================================
Another week, another loss for the Albany Firewolves.

The 'Wolves dropped a 14-12 decision to the NY Riptide Saturday, dropping their record to 2-5 on the season. No one thought the 'Wolves would be this bad, but it is what it is.

Good thing the Empire and arena football are two months away.

News & notes

 Sinclair Broadcasting, which holds the local broadcast rights to almost half of the teams in Major League Baseball, including the Mets, is on the verge of losing business media partner Diamond Sports Group, which is facing bankruptcy.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is looking into the possibility of MLB's TV arm possibly working with Sinclair to produce games if Diamond does go under, which means Met broadcasts on CW15 might have a different look, as early as this season. Stay tuned.
===================================
LaSalle Institute's hockey team went into Friday's Senior Night game vs. Albany Academy perhaps a little too confident, and looking past Academy toward this afternoon's regular season finale at Bethlehem. LaSalle had won the first half of the winter Battle of The Cadets last month on Academy's ice, so Academy returned the favor, picking up their first league win of the season, 4-2, playing spoiler as LaSalle was hoping to improve its playoff prospects.

Today, Academy continues its road trip at CBA, while LaSalle will try to get back to .500 in league play at Bethlehem.

Other hockey scores:

Queensbury 7, Saratoga 3.
Adirondack 4, Shenendehowa 2.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake-Ballston Spa 6, Guilderville 3.
======================================
Siena's men's basketball team welcomed back injured stars Javian McCollum and Michael Eley for Friday's game at Mount St. Mary's, and the Saints completed the season sweep, 72-65. Eley led the Saints with 23 points. McCollum added 22, and Andrew Platek (Guilderland/North Carolina) had just 5 points. Siena returns home to play Marist at MVP Arena tomorrow (WNYA, 2 pm).
========================================
As of press time, there has been no word as to why Troy High women's basketball coach Steve Lombard missed Friday's finale at Bethlehem. We're hoping to obtain some information in the next 24-48 hours.

High School Fridays: First, the flowers, then the massacre (Troy @ Bethlehem, women's basketball, 2/10/23)

 It is Senior Night at Bethlehem High this evening. As a token of goodwill and sportsmanship, the Eagles honored not only their lone senior, but also Troy's 4 seniors, including Addie Borowsky, who were honored prior to last week's loss to Niskayuna. I've seen this kind of goodwill before, when Troy's women's soccer team similarly honored Heatly a few years ago.

Noticeably absent was coach Steve Lombard, and Troy dressed just 8 players. Uh-oh! Sarah Fullmer ran the team tonight, but otherwise, it was more of the same.

Bethlehem never trailed, using a suffocating, full-court pressure defense, generating more turnovers than a pastry factory. If I named some brands, I'd be sued for defamation. Just kidding. After a narrow loss to Shenendehowa on Tuesday, Bethlehem, as expected, took it out on the undermanned Lady Horses to the tune of a 68-30 beatdown.

Edit, 2/15/23: Bethlehem has decided to privatize the video. So, we have a little graphic to replace it.

Troy finishes the regular season 1-19 overall.

Other scores:

Women:

Colonie 61, Albany 54. That result will help Bethlehem in terms of seeding for the sectionals, which begin next week.

Saratoga 70, Ballston Spa 42.
Hoosick Falls 45, Saratoga Catholic 14.
Shaker 61, Duanesburg 47.

Men:

Niskayuna 54, Averill Park 49.
Ballston Spa 71, Saratoga 57.
Albany Academy 61, Catholic Central 53.

Hockey:

CBA & the Mohawks skated to a 2-2 tie.

More scores and maybe some stats tomorrow.

News & notes

 As the losses mount, the current losing streak now at 8 in a row, the more likely it is that UAlbany may have to cut bait on 2nd year coach Dwayne Killings, as his legal issues have provided too much of a distraction.

In front of just over 1,000 fans at Hudson Valley Community College on Wednesday, the Great Danes laid another egg, losing to Bryant, 87-62. Gerald Drumgoole, Jr. led the Danes with 16 points.

At this rate, HVCC's team, which shares the McDonough Field House, could beat Albany.
====================================================
Meanwhile, the Lady Danes got back on the winning track on the road, beating Bryant, 56-36. Kayla Cooper led Albany with 21 points. Abby Ray (Saratoga) & Grace Heeps (Columbia/UMass) were held scoreless. Lilly Phillps (Cambridge) is out with a leg injury, with no timetable for her return.
==================================================
Siena men's head coach Carmen Maciariello shared with the press on Wednesday that some of his players have been bombarded with racist insults on social media after the team's recent losses at home.

Maciariello speculated that the haterizing is coming from "fans" who are putting money on the games, and losing out, likely in large quantities.

We've seen this sort of thing play out in the pro game, usually in football, when inebriated geeks take umbrage at selected players for "blowing the game" with a missed field goal or a dropped pass.

Just when you think it couldn't happen here......!
